"I Don't Think Librarians Can Save Us": The Material Conditions Of Information Literacy Instruction In The Misinformation Age, Amber Willenborg, Robert Detmering Jul 2025

"I Don't Think Librarians Can Save Us": The Material Conditions Of Information Literacy Instruction In The Misinformation Age, Amber Willenborg, Robert Detmering

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This national qualitative study investigates academic librarians’ instructional experiences, views, and challenges regarding the widespread problem of misinformation. Findings from phenomenological interviews reveal a tension between librarians’ professional, moral, and civic obligation to address misinformation and the actual material conditions of information literacy instruction, which influence and often constrain librarians’ pedagogical and institutional roles. The authors call for greater professional reflection on current information literacy models that focus on achieving ambitious educational goals but which may be unsuitable for addressing the larger social and political crisis of misinformation.

Inversions are known contributors to the pathogenesis of genetic diseases. Identifying inversions poses significant challenges, making it one of the most demanding structural variants (SVs) to detect and interpret. Recent advancements in sequencing technologies and the development of publicly available SV datasets have substantially enhanced our capability to explore inversions. However, a cross-comparison in those datasets remains unexplored. In this study, we reported a proband with familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis type-3 carrying a splicing variant (c.1389+1G>A) in trans with an inversion present in 0.006345% of individuals in gnomAD (v4.0) that disrupts UNC13D. Based on this result, we investigate the features …

Adverse childhood experiences, such as household dysfunction (HD), play a central role in how adolescents establish, experience, and navigate the challenges of relationship formation, maintenance, and dissolution. HD exposures have been independently associated with dating violence (DV) perpetration in both adolescents and adults. However, research examining the association between the concurrent effect of HD on DV perpetration, especially among adolescents remains scarce. Thus, we conducted a scoping review to accumulate and summarize existing research regarding the impact of HD on DV perpetration among adolescents aged 10 to 17 years in the United States. We used three electronic databases, Medline (Ovid), …

Unlocking The Neurochemical Secrets Of Aging: Investigating The Impact Of Gaba Producing Probiotics On Healthy Aging, Sanaly Nava, Isabel Harbig, Dishant Aggarwal, Samjhana Pradhan, Ken Aho, Kavita Sharma

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Aging is a gradual process of weakening bodily function that leads to decline in physical, cognitive and behavioral abilities. Gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), a major neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, is produced by both neurons and gut bacteria, and plays a crucial role in numerous physiological functions. Notably, aging is associated with a decline in GABA production and alterations in gut microbiota. Therefore, restoring GABA production by correcting dysbiosis presents a potential strategy for managing age-related functional decline. To better understand how to support healthy aging, our study investigates the gut-brain axis and the potential of genetically modified GABA-producing …

The Wages Of Constitutional Interpretation, Francesca L. Procaccini Jul 2025

The Wages Of Constitutional Interpretation, Francesca L. Procaccini

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The future of constitutional interpretation is a dynamic amalgam of knowns and unknowns. This article explores three. First, an unknown known: the Court's embrace of formal equality methodologies, more than originalist methodologies, is driving current conservative changes in constitutional law and ushering in a stale and acontextual bent to constitutional rights. Second, another unknown known: both the Court's equality and originalist methodologies serve to jettison the longstanding and widespread use of intermediate scrutiny and thereby push the level of protection for rights to the extremes. Finally, a known unknown: the Court's embrace of hyper-formal equality and originalist rules transfers hegemonic …

Data-Driven Police Profiling, Christopher Slobogin Jul 2025

Data-Driven Police Profiling, Christopher Slobogin

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Police departments increasingly rely on algorithms and other data- driven methods of identifying high-crime areas andpeople who are at high risk for involvement in crime. This Article examines several constitutional obstacles to this type ofpolicing. First, to the extent that these algorithms rely on data entitled to privacy protection, they may violate the Fourth Amendment. Second, the steps police take in response to a "hot" place or person designation must also be subject to constitutional regulation. Further, the principle of legality should prohibit the police from acting on any risk designation, even one that is very likely accurate, in the …

Smith, Jean O'Dwyer, Paul D. Hynds, Martin Cormican, Liam P. Burke

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Consequences of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection can range in severity from asymptomatic infection to haemolytic uraemic syndrome, renal failure and death. Groundwater-derived drinking water is an important route for STEC transmission. Detection of STEC in water is crucial for timely response and public health interventions; however, currently used culture-based methods are time-consuming and laborious. Therefore, there is a need for rapid methods that maintain high sensitivity and specificity [1]. We describe a novel, sensitive, enrichment-free water filtration method using a convenient sample volume (100 ml) to detect DNA markers of STEC serogroups and virulence factors within 6 h. …

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of mitochondria in NP cells and articular chondrocyte health. Since the understanding of mechanisms governing mitochondrial dynamics in these tissues is lacking, we investigated the role of OPA1, a mitochondrial fusion protein, in their homeostasis. OPA1 knockdown in NP cells altered mitochondrial size and cristae shape and increased the oxygen consumption rate. OPA1 governed the morphology of multiple organelles, including peroxisomes, early endosomes and cis-Golgi and loss resulted in the dysregulation of autophagy. Metabolic profiling and

Using The Transmission Grid To Make “Second Best” Decarbonization Better, Jim Rossi Jul 2025

Using The Transmission Grid To Make “Second Best” Decarbonization Better, Jim Rossi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Instead of a “first best” decarbonization approach such as a national carbon tax, U.S. efforts to decarbonize the electric power sector draw heavily on the decentralized, often fragmented tools of state utility regulation. These “second best” decarbonization approaches can create many benefits, but they also present several challenges for energy markets. In this Essay, I focus attention on how interstate transmission planning and cost allocation can help to mediate and improve the efficacy of second best decarbonization policies. Despite much-needed recent improvements to federal transmission policies, opportunities remain to continue to reform transmission grid regulation to improve second best decarbonization …

Improving Distributional Analysis In Regulatory Evaluation: An Assessment Of The 2023 Circular A-4, W. Kip Viscusi, A. Fraas, John D. Graham, Kerry Krutilla, Randall Lutter, Jason F. Shogren

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The November 2023 revision to OMB Circular A-4 expands upon past guidance on distributional assessment in regulatory impact analysis and adds new options for conducting it, such as the use of distributional weights based on the marginal utility of income. This note explores the implications of key changes suggested in the 2023 guidelines and addresses modeling and data challenges that could yield recommendations for future revisions. We suggest that progress in improving distributional assessment in regulatory impact analysis is most likely if federal agencies collaborate with the National Science Foundation to produce model distributional analyses for different types of regulations.

Decomposing Crowding Out Effect In The Philippines: Leveraging Fiscal Policy To Drive Inclusive Growth, John Paolo R. Rivera, Mary Grace R. Agner, Viory Yvonne T. Janeo, John Angelo F. Cristobal

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Fiscal stimulus programs have substantively kept the Philippine economy afloat during crises and in facilitating recovery. In pursuing steeper growth, there is a tendency to harness fiscal policy at the expense of crowding out private investment and consumption, which defeats the ultimate purpose of such policy. Using time series analysis, we assess the degree of crowding out effect in the Philippines and its implications for the effectiveness of fiscal policy as a macroeconomic stabilization and growth driver tool. Although scholarly literature has used aggregate government spending in probing the existence of a crowding out effect on aggregate investment and consumption …

Multifaceted Skepticism: A Comprehensive Approach In Auditing Practice, Ida Ayu Budhananda Munidewi, Unti Ludigdo, Ali Djamhuri, Wuryan Andayani

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This research uses a modified grounded theory approach to understand the behavior of auditors in Indonesia who have an Eastern cultural background in applying professional skepticism. The research results reveal that auditor behavior in practice applies multifaceted skepticism. Multifaceted skepticism refers to the idea that professional skepticism in auditing is not a one-dimensional approach. That recognizes the complexity of the audit environment and the need for auditors to consider various factors when applying their skepticism. Multifaceted skepticism brings us to a less simplistic view of professional skepticism, which until now has only been seen as an on-or-off switch. Instead, this …

Reaction Control Mechanism In Deoxyuridine 5'-Triphosphate Nucleotidohydrolase, Aaron Delay

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Deoxyuridine 5'-triphosphate nucleotidohydrolase (dUTPase) is an enzyme involved in the pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway, a key component of cellular DNA metabolism. It regulates intracellular uracil carrying triphosphate levels by hydrolyzing dUTP, thereby providing a substrate for thymidylate synthase (TS). The effective inhibition of dUTPase is expected to enhance TS-targeted chemotherapy by promoting thymine-less apoptosis.

Although the reaction mechanism of dUTPase has been studied, the human nuclear homotrimeric form remains complex, as all three subunits cooperatively form a single active site. As a result, the detailed molecular dynamics of its catalysis are still not fully understood. In this study, I investigated the …
