Non-Animal Methods and 3Rs
In the U.S. and many other countries, oversight committee approval is a common requirement for conducting research and publishing its findings. However, in evaluating whether research aims could have been achieved by methods other than the use of animals, these committees face a challenging task. In the U.S., there is no requirement that committee members have expertise in the research areas under review or in methods that could replace animal use, nor could expertise in such vast technical areas be expected. Consideration of alternatives to painful procedures is not required at all for experiments on animals not covered by the …

Tariffs: Maybe They Are Not Really A Bad Idea, Nicholas M. Zacchea, Nick Zacchea
Business: Faculty Publications
A recent news article suggested that imported commodities will cost consumers a lot more money because of recently implemented tariff policies in the United States. It has sounded to a lot of people that tariffs are a very bad idea.
But are tariffs really not a good idea? Tariff policy and tariffs are relatively complex subjects. Both need to be better understood to decide whether a country’s current tariff policies and the resultant tariffs are a good idea, a bad idea, or maybe a little bit of both.
It is true that a tariff might increase the price of an …

Perceived expert witness credibility is one of many factors that can impact juror decision making behaviors. In cases where the insanity defense has been raised, an expert witness assess the defendant, and may later testify about the defendant’s criminal responsibility (CR). The use of videoconferencing (VC) software to complete forensic mental health assessments has increased. Yet, research examining how jurors perceive the practice of a videoconferenced forensic mental health assessment remains unclear. The present study addressed the dearth in the literature by examining whether the source of assessment (in-person vs. VC) used to conduct a criminal responsibility evaluation impacted perceptions …

This study explored the motivational and affective implications of perceived underqualification, specifically examining how it leads to increased levels of envy and help-seeking behaviors. We predicted that envy and help seeking behaviors would in turn indirectly relate to interpersonal deviance and task performance. We further hypothesized that two psychological resources, hope and self-efficacy, would moderate the relationships between perceived underqualification, envy, and help seeking. We tested our model with a sample of 149 medical school students who were undergoing a clinical rotation as well as their rotation coordinators at a university hospital located in northwestern Turkey. Data collection spanned four …

Traditional gene expression deconvolution methods assess a limited number of cell types, therefore do not capture the full complexity of the tumor microenvironment (TME). Here, we integrate nine deconvolution tools to assess 79 TME cell types in 10,592 tumors across 33 different cancer types, creating the most comprehensive analysis of the TME. In total, we found 41 patterns of immune infiltration and stroma profiles, identifying heterogeneous yet unique TME portraits for each cancer and several new findings. Our findings indicate that leukocytes play a major role in distinguishing various tumor types, and that a shared immune-rich TME cluster predicts better …

Abstract
This paper offers a comprehensive examination of socialization and identity development through a comparative lens, focusing on American, Chinese, and Japanese cultures. It explores how distinct cultural values—individualism, loyalty, and cooperation—shape personal and collective identities from childhood through old age. Utilizing the life course perspective, the analysis considers how factors such as generation, socioeconomic status, race, and gender influence the trajectory of human development. The evolution of childhood is traced across historical and cultural contexts, highlighting shifting perceptions, the impact of industrialization on children's roles, and the persistent influence of class and ethnicity on access to education and well-being. …

Cerebral palsy (CP), a neurological disorder that affects children and can occasionally result in cognitive problems as well as deficits in motor function can be caused by prenatal, perinatal, or postnatal factors. Each subtype of cerebral palsy (CP), such as spastic and non-spastic cerebral palsy, has distinct symptoms based on the location of the brain lesion and how it affects muscle tone. Individualized therapy and rehabilitation programs are necessary to treat these differences effectively. Therefore, early-stage CP categorization is crucial to ensuring timely and targeted treatment efforts. The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the infant's brain is a helpful …

Einstein Health Papers
Healthcare providers increasingly encounter Muslim patients with unique pharmacological considerations influenced by religious beliefs and practices. Islam, as the world's second-largest religion, includes specific guidelines affecting medication permissibility, particularly regarding alcohol and pork-derived ingredients. This educational guide examines the intersection of Islamic teachings with pharmacotherapy, providing examples of commonly prescribed medications containing alcohol or porcine-derived gelatin from our academic medical center's inpatient and outpatient formulary. We document alcohol content percentages in various medications and suggest possible alternatives as illustrative examples. Most importantly, we present a step-by-step practical framework for using National Drug Code (NDC) numbers and the DailyMed database, enabling …
