Forest and Society
Mangroves at the land-sea interface offer invaluable goods and services through their unique ecosystem. Society has responded by developing governance mechanisms to manage these resources sustainably, which is crucial for societal well-being. The global environmental governance landscape is a complex network of treaty-based regimes addressing various ecological challenges. This study aims to examine the treaty-based regimes governing mangrove conservation, systematically mapping and identifying authoritative global mangrove regimes. It analyses the fragmentation scale regarding synergies, conflicts, and neutral relationships between global environmental treaties. Online scoping reviews and content analysis revealed that the Ramsar Convention serves as the legal authority of the …

How Much And Why? Conservation Behavior And Valuation In Katunggan Coastal Ecopark, Mindanao Island, Philippines, Sheenamae P. Loreno, Peter Jan De Vera
Forest and Society
Mangrove forests are among the most productive and valuable ecosystems, providing critical services such as shoreline protection, fisheries support, and carbon sequestration. Despite their ecological and economic significance, mangrove forests continue to decline at an alarming rate due to land conversion for aquaculture, urban expansion, overharvesting, and climate-related impacts. Although national and community-based conservation programs exist in the Philippines, many of these efforts have struggled due to limited public participation and a lack of insight into how local communities perceive and value mangrove ecosystems. This study surveyed 503 residents living near the Katunggan Coastal Ecopark in Mindanao Island, Philippines, to …

BACKGROUND: Communication among health care professionals is essential for effective clinical care. Asynchronous text-based clinician communication-secure messaging-is rapidly becoming the preferred mode of communication. The use of secure messaging platforms across health care institutions creates large-scale communication networks that can be used to characterize how interaction structures affect the behaviors and outcomes of network members. However, the understanding of the structure and interactions within these networks is relatively limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the characteristics of a large-scale secure messaging network and its association with health care professional messaging behaviors.
METHODS: Data on electronic health record-integrated secure messaging use from …

INTRODUCTION: Tumor-informed minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring assays based on plasma circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) are increasingly integrated into the clinical management of patients with cancer. In the post-surgical curative intent setting and as an adjunct to radiographic imaging for response assessment and surveillance, timely identification of MRD may better guide therapeutic decision-making. The increasing clinical adoption of MRD testing, supported by a growing body of evidence demonstrating its potential utility at critical decision points across diverse tumor histology, has brought attention to the variability in the analytical performance of available ctDNA assays. This variability is becoming increasingly appreciated as …

Zoonoses emergence and endemicity are serious global public health problems that disproportionately affect low-resource settings. One Health (OH) serves as a framework to understand the interconnection of zoonoses risk factors and incentivizes collaboration, coordination, and communication among sectors. However, OH encounters barriers related to power imbalances, gaps in coordination, and conflicts of interest among diverse communities of practice, which are groups that share a problem and domain of interest and engage in collective learning. This research aims to elucidate the mental models of policy communities, which are representations of the environment, and how humans explain and predict their surroundings to …

Master's Theses (2009 -)
Ultra-low-field (ULF) MRI systems, such as the Hyperfine Swoop (64mT), represent a transformative advancement in neuroimaging by offering portable, affordable alternatives to conventional high-field MRI. This system has the potential to significantly expand access to diagnostic imaging in resource-limited, emergency, and point-of-care settings. This study evaluates the clinical reliability and reproducibility of the Hyperfine Swoop by conducting a series of controlled in vivo test-retest scans on a single participant. Quantitative assessment of brain image quality was performed using voxel volume consistency and the Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM). The results demonstrated high intra-subject repeatability with minimal variation across sessions, underscoring …
Low-Magnitude High-Frequency Mechanical Vibration Enhances Osteogenesis In Human Pdl Cells Through Piezo1 Ion Channel, Mina Oh
Master's Theses (2009 -)
ABSTRACT LOW-MAGNITUDE HIGH-FREQUENCY MECHANICAL VIBRATION ENHANCES OSTEOGENESIS IN HUMAN PDL CELLS THROUGH PIEZO1 ION CHANNEL Mina Oh, D.M.D Marquette University, 2025 Introduction: Low-magnitude high-frequency (LMHF) mechanical vibration has been shown to enhance osteogenesis in various osteogenic tissues and cells, including periodontal ligament (PDL) cells, however its effectiveness remains relatively low. The Piezo1 mechanosensitive ion channel plays a critical role in mechanotransduction, however its specific involvement in the LMHF-induced osteogenesis is unknown. This study aims to elucidate the role of Piezo1 in mediating osteogenic responses in human PDL cells subjected to LMHF mechanical vibration. Materials and Methods: Human PDL cells were …

Missing Information: A Content Analysis Of U.S. Missing Persons Alerts Using The Missing And Endangered Persons Message Framework, Lauren Cain, Jeannette Sutton, Hugh Walpole, Micki Olson
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
Missing and endangered person (MEP) alerts are a prominent messaging strategy used by law enforcement agencies in the United States to recover missing persons, with over 1,800 AMBER Alerts issued via the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system and nearly 40 similar alerts introduced by state legislatures for other groups of missing people. Despite their prevalent use, the contents of MEP alerts have not yet been empirically examined. Drawing from warning message design and AMBER Alert best practices, we propose a new MEP Message Framework and use it to evaluate the contents of 4,053 MEP WEAs sent from 2013 to 2023. …
The Impacts Of Ocean Warming On Phytoplankton Dynamics And Links To Fisheries Management Around St Helena Island, South Atlantic Ocean, Shelby Bargo
The Plymouth Student Scientist
In the context of a rapidly changing climate, understanding how ocean warming is reshaping the foundation of marine ecosystems has never been more important. This research investigates factors contributing to ocean warming, and where anthropogenically influenced climate change plays a critical role in the functionality of the physical marine environment, phytoplankton, and trophodynamics throughout the pelagic zone. Phytoplankton, whilst microscopic, are vital; they are regulated by physical oceanographic factors that control their access to growth-limiting factors, such as nutrients. With the formidable climate-driven physical and biological changes occurring in the marine environment, alongside the decline in fish stocks, it is …

RationaleCannabis use disorder (CUD) is highly prevalent with ∼44 million cases worldwide. CUD has been associated with compulsive use despite experiencing adverse psychosocial outcomes. Such adverse outcomes of CUD have been attributed to altered cognition - a set of mental processes that support the organisation and implementation of goal-directed behaviour. However, the evidence is mixed and limited by methodological issues including inconsistent assessment of CUD and metrics of cannabis use.Objective/MethodsThis study examined distinct domains of cognition (i.e., executive function, working memory, episodic memory, verbal reasoning, attention, IQ) in 115 participants aged 18.5 to 32.5 years. We compared performance between 83 …

Nongovernmental Organizations In The Design And Implementation Of Social Forestry Programs In Indonesia: Interests, Power And Strategies, Arsad Ragandhi, Agus Heruanto Hadna, Setiadi Setiadi, Ahmad Maryudi
Forest and Society
Many social forestry projects have failed to produce expected outcomes. In many cases, they do not suit specific local contexts, problems, and needs because they only articulate the interests of powerful actors outside local communities. In this study, we examine how nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) affect social forestry implementation. In many cases, NGOs are characterized as benevolent actors, often claiming to represent voiceless groups, including poor local communities, in the social forestry context. We are specifically interested in analyzing the ways by which the studied NGOs have shaped the implementation of social forestry models in the forests managed by the state …

Tectonics literally and figuratively create rhythms for living in the seismically active nation of Indonesia where shifting plates generate landforms around which cultures construct their homelands. Eastern Indonesian communities who have built their societies around the region’s dynamic watersheds have constructed traditional ecological knowledge and place-based skills for accessing freshwater. What is the water-related knowledge and skills of Indigenous societies who live in the tropical monsoon climate zone of Nusa Tenggara Timur Province (NTT)? How have communities living on Sumba Island in southern NTT adapted to their homelands where they find water to pose the most difficult challenge to survival? …

Tracking T cells in vivo using MRI is a major challenge due to the difficulty of labeling these non-phagocytic cells with a sufficient contrast agent to generate a detectable signal change. In this study, we explored CD4-Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION), which is commonly used in magnetic cell sorting, as a potential receptor-mediated, specific CD4+ T cell MRI labeling agent. We optimized the labeling protocol for maximal CD4+ cell labeling and viability. Cell health was confirmed with trypan blue assay, and labeling efficacy was confirmed with Prussian blue staining, transmission electron microscopy, and MRI of labeled cell pellets. Key cell …

The Enduring Relevance Of The Right To Strike: Arguments For Further Legal Protection And Regulatory Reform, Tonia Novitz, Katherine Fitzpatrick, Jeffrey Vogt
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
In this thematic issue, the contributors demonstrate the past and contemporary relevance of a right to strike. Some authors do so with reference to the long-standing role that such an entitlement plays in protecting dignity, democracy, and other vital public interests. Attention is also paid to emerging contemporary issues, whereby the right to strike offers important leverage that would otherwise be absent, for example countering abusive treatment of those at work in global supply chain practices and the environmental degradation of the planet. They all conclude that, while it is possible to utilise existing legal protections of a right to …

Strikes And The Struggle For Democracy, Angela B. Cornell, Ruth Dukes
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The right to strike is fundamental to the development and maintenance of democratic forms of government. In struggles to construct and defend democratic regimes, strikes, including general strikes, are often an important weapon. In established democracies, the right to strike can aid the spread of democratic decision-making in workplaces and the wider economy, serving indirectly to strengthen participation and confidence in political processes and institutions. And it can underpin systems of collective bargaining that function to narrow income and wealth inequalities, in a manner that is conducive, if not necessary, to the maintenance of democratic government. Wherever the right to …
Dignity And The Right To Strike, Sergio Gamonal C
Dignity And The Right To Strike, Sergio Gamonal C
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
“Dignity” expresses the idea that a human being should never be treated as a means but always as an end. “Dignity” also encompasses a communitarian and relational approach, such as belonging, collective action and “dignity in action”. When we recognize and seek to remedy indignities, we also confer a certain dignity on ourselves. How can these notions be linked to the right to strike? I shall argue that the right to strike underpins the dignity of workers and that this connection is implicit in Advisory Opinion OC-27/21 of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. In national and international courts, such …

Balancing The Right To Strike And Other Public Interests: The Importance Of The Status Of The Right To Strike, Petra Herzfeld Olsson, Shae Mccrystal
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The regulation of strike action involves the balancing of competing public interests – the benefits derived from collective bargaining and the right to strike and others including public safety, health, welfare, and industrial peace. We explore how this balancing act plays out in the legal systems of two national jurisdictions, Australia and Sweden, and through the ILO principles on freedom of association as developed by the ILO’s supervisory bodies. We seek to understand how different regulatory approaches to these competing public interests produces different outcomes and the potential consequences where protecting other public interests is prioritised over the right to …
Labour Against The Law? Contesting The Restrictive Norms Of Industrial Legality Through Unlawful Strikes, Eric Tucker
Labour Against The Law? Contesting The Restrictive Norms Of Industrial Legality Through Unlawful Strikes, Eric Tucker
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
North American regimes of industrial legality provide workers with protected rights to organize, bargain collectively, and strike. However, they also limit the freedom to strike. Trade unions commonly accept and enforce these limits but at great cost to solidarity and militancy. This article examines the many ways law works against labour by restricting the freedom to strike and explores the practice of unlawful strikes in North America, including recent examples that resulted in successful outcomes. It concludes with reflections on the revival of unlawful strikes as a tactic for rebuilding and remobilizing the North American labour movement. While the article’s …

Strike Law And Workers’ Power Resources In Global Supply Chains And Platform Giants, Judy Fudge, Hila Shamir
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The right to strike is a key feature of freedom of association and effective collective bargaining. We consider how the legal regulation of strikes and boycotts affects the power resources available to workers and unions to improve working conditions and workers’ voice in firms, such as global supply chains and platform giants, that utilize network-of-contracts business models. We begin by bringing the literatures on power resources theory and supply chain and platform capitalism into conversation. Treating law as a form of institutional power influencing workers’ ability to exercise other power resources in network-of-contracts business models, we then examine how the …

The negative impacts of climate change on the world of work around the world are serious and certain to worsen. Further, the actions needed to mitigate and adapt to these impacts will be deeply disruptive. In 2015, the tripartite constituents of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) unanimously endorsed the ILO Guidelines for a just transition towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies (reaffirmed in 2023), which includes among its guiding principles the right to freedom of association and, by extension, the right to strike — an intrinsic corollary. This article explores potential bases for a right to strike in the context …
The Last Human Job: The Work Of Connecting In A Disconnected World By Allison J. Pugh, Princeton University Press, 2024, Karen Levy

“I FEEL SO SEEN!” has become a Gen-Z catchphrase for the sense of personal validation when something you experience resonates with your own way of being in the world — say, when you learn that a lyric you’ve always misheard is also misunderstood by someone else, or that a guilty pleasure in which you indulge isn’t unique to you. These days, the phrase is often thrown around light-heartedly online in response to memes or TikTok videos. But the experience of really “being seen” is far from trivial; it’s a form of recognition essential to human functioning and community. Seeing another …

The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Race On Access To Maternal Healthcare Services For Patients Based On Insurance Status, Trishana Monlyn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Due to insurance status, COVID-19 has restricted how and when patients can access healthcare providers. In the health services community, examining obstetric care services during the coronavirus outbreak was important because it increased awareness about how changes to maternal healthcare access affect the health of the mother and unborn child during a pandemic. The theories and/or concepts that grounded this study include the intersectionality theory, which examined the connections between social groups and systems as individuals try to access health services based on health insurance reform, depending on their race. The purpose of this study was to determine if there …
