In recent years, Maine has seen an increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness who are living outdoors. People living in these circumstances often shelter together in groups of tents or other temporary structures commonly referred to as “encampments.”As municipalities across Maine struggled with how best to respond to the increase in encampments across the state, the United States Supreme Court decided City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, a case originating in Grants Pass, Oregon. Grants Pass wanted to issue civil and criminal fines to people for sleeping outdoors, even when no alternative shelter was available. Obesity is a significant clinical problem affecting 41.9% of adults in the United States, with profound implications for individual health and healthcare economics. Standard weight loss interventions, often limited to pharmacological treatments and dietary guidance, frequently fail to achieve sustained adherence and meaningful longterm outcomes. This quality improvement (QI) project evaluated the integration of motivational interviewing (MI), a patient-centered counseling strategy, into routine clinical practice at Innovafusion, a medically supervised weight loss clinic in Aubrey, Texas. Background: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifaceted endocrine disorder that affects up to 20% of women of reproductive age and is associated with an increased prevalence of psychiatric conditions, particularly depression and anxiety. Problem: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 11.4% of children in the United States. Patients diagnosed with ADHD struggle with focus, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, resulting in executive and emotional dysfunction, poor social skills and quality of relationships, and poor school performance.
The American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines recommend that school-age children diagnosed with ADHD should receive both medication management and behavioral management training (BMT) for the best treatment outcomes. The introduction of a race-neutral equation to predict normal values on pulmonary function testing (PFT) has led to changes in the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases previously diagnosed using a race specific equation. Minority patients appear to be most likely impacted by this change, potentially impacting how they self-manage their pulmonary health. Patient self-management can be measured and assessed by using the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) tool.

Problem: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a viral infection associated with the development of certain cancers and is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States (U.S.) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023). The CDC (2021) asserts that more than 90% of cancers caused by HPV infections could be prevented through the HPV vaccination. Research indicates that non-offending caregivers of traumatized children (NOC) is a population with an elevated risk for increased levels of depression and anxiety and are an underserved population for mental health services. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine if screening caregivers of traumatized children using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) improves identification of depression and anxiety. Routinely screening oncology patients for depression is recommended due to the higher rates of depression in this population as well as the negative impact of untreated depression. The goal of this QI project is to implement a standard depression screening protocol for patients admitted to this hospital, where there is currently no standard screening protocol. There were 110 patients included in this study, and 67 (60.91%) of patients received a PHQ-9 screening. Of the patients who completed the PHQ-9, 21 (19.09%) had a positive screening, which was a score of seven or higher. While there were high rates of provider …

Problem: In 2023, Compass Health Network (CHN) data analysts found that 91% of CHN patients in the United States who have died by suicide reported problems with sleep, which was the highest risk factor for suicide. The objective of this program evaluation project is to evaluate CHN CBT-I effectiveness on patients ‘suicidality by improving their insomnia.
Methods: CHN quality improvement (QI) project used a quantitative method pre/post score design. [Objective ] This study aims to explore the ameliorating effects of flavonoids on atopic dermatitis (AD) and their structure-activity relationships.[Method ] Flavonoids were selected through network pharmacology with interleukin- 4 (IL-4) and interleukin- 13 (IL-13) as key targets.The immunoglobulin E (IgE)-induced RBL- 2H3 cell model was employed to evaluate the effects of flavonoids on inflammatory factors,degranulation activities,and calcium ion influx,and the structure-activity relationships were analyzed.Finally,molecular docking was utilized to assist in exploring the action mechanism.[Result ] All of the six flavonoids (luteolin,apigenin,chrysin,quercetin,kaempferol,and fisetin ) screened by network pharmacology had significant inhibitory effects on the expression of IL- 4,IL- 13,tumor necrosis …

[Objective ] This study aims to improve the properties of chestnut starch.[Method ] Tea polysaccharides were added to chestnut starch in different proportions,and the effects of tea polysaccharides on the water-holding capacity,digestive properties,textural properties,and other properties of chestnut starch were investigated.[Result ] The water-holding and oil-holding properties of chestnut starch were the largest when tea polysaccharides were added at 1% and then gradually decreased with the increase in the proportion of tea polysaccharides added.The transparency of chestnut starch gradually increased when tea polysaccharides were added from 1% to 8% and decreased significantly when tea polysaccharides were added at 16%.Adding tea …

No central documentation of care plans exists for children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) in the electronic health record (EHR). Providers of a large pediatric primary care office in St. Louis Missouri were asked to identify CSHCN in the practice. Clinic nurses completed a comprehensive chart review of the patients identified and constructed care coordination documents using a pre-established smart-text phrase. Subsequently, these were documented centrally in the EHR under the Problem List.

Avoidance is a well-established mechanism in the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a central treatment target in gold standard evidence-based interventions. While traditionally defined as avoidance of trauma-related distressing thoughts, emotions, and reminders, emerging research highlights the need for a broader conceptualization of posttraumatic avoidance that includes both negative and positive emotional experiences. BACKGROUND: Anemia among women of reproductive age has remained highly prevalent globally. Intravenous (IV) iron is well tolerated and proven effective for treating postpartum iron deficiency anemia in high-income countries, but evidence from LMICs, where oral iron is standard treatment, is limited. The PRIORITY trial will test the effectiveness of IV iron compared to oral iron for postpartum women with moderate anemia in eight LMIC sites. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a key structural component of Gram-negative bacteria, is a major trigger of sepsis and septic shock, the systemic inflammatory conditions responsible for millions of deaths annually. Even at concentrations as low as 1 ng/mL, LPS can activate the immune system and initiate inflammatory cascades. According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017, sepsis accounted for 48.9 million cases globally, with 11 million deaths, emphasizing the urgent need for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

Problem: Parents of children 2-5 years-old increasingly reach out to PCPs for escalating behavior concerns, including when the child doesn’t listen well, is inattentive, having tantrums, meltdowns, hitting, yelling, etc. Referrals to psychiatry and/or play therapy result in long waits, or referrals not accepted. Coincidingly, toddler and preschool aged children continue to exceed daily screen time recommendations. This results in a gap of care for families with young children and externalizing behavior.

Practice Problem: Burnout Syndrome (BS) is a serious problem in emergency department (ED) nurses and is associated with higher nurse turnover rates. A burnout prevention toolkit is needed.
PICOT: The project was guided by the following PICO question: "For emergency department nurses (P), how does the development of the best practice burnout prevention toolkit (I), compared to the absence of a structured intervention (C), support the establishment of nurse burnout best practices when evaluated using the CDC Program Evaluation Framework? The antioxidant properties of lactic acid bacteria are related to various probiotic activities,which can prevent and alleviate a variety of chronic diseases caused by oxidation in the host.The antioxidant mechanisms of lactic acid bacteria,including the action mechanisms of antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants and regulation of host signaling pathways,were expounded.Furthermore,the application status of antioxidant properties of lactic acid bacteria in diseases of the nervous system,digestive system,and skin system were summarized.The aim is to explore how to enhance the antioxidant activity of lactic acid bacteria in oxidative stress-related diseases and give new insights into the development of related treatment strategies.

[Objective ] The extraction efficiency of different methods and the effects of these methods on the composition of mannoproteins extracted from yeast cell walls were compared.Furthermore,the anti-inflammatory activities of the extracted mannoprotein were evaluated.[Method ] Three yeast mannoproteins (MP-W,MP-B,and MP-E ) were extracted via high-temperature water,alkali,and enzyme-assisted extraction methods and purified via ethanol precipitation.The identification of monosaccharide composition and amino acid composition,distribution of relative molecular mass,and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to analyze the composition and chemical structures of yeast mannoproteins.A cell experiment was carried out to examine the anti-inflammatory activity.[Result ] The yields of yeast mannoproteins extracted by …
