Increasing Clinical Placements For Occupational Therapy In A Social Services Setting: Innovations For Practice, Martin Fitzgerald, Becky Antich, Ele Grimwood
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The provision of undergraduate clinical placements to support Allied Health education has always been a challenge. However, in the last few years, the mismatch between undergraduate students and available placements has become acute. This paper describes how an undergraduate occupational therapy programme and a Metropolitan Council provider of social services worked together to overcome these challenges. The aim was to enhance inter-institutional cooperation and placement educator support and to increase placement opportunities. Method: A series of meetings between the university and the host institution identified barriers and opportunities to placement expansion. For the host institution, these included the absence …

Modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), popularized globally by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) since 1993, initially faced significant concerns regarding fighter safety but improved considerably following the introduction of comprehensive regulatory measures. Despite these enhancements, MMA continues to carry substantial risk, particularly evident in bouts concluded by referee or medical stoppages. These stoppages are critical safety mechanisms protecting fighters and providing valuable insights into injury trends. This study specifically investigates MMA bouts stopped by ringside physicians due to medical concerns or observed injuries, emphasizing potential differences in these stoppages between male and female fighters. The methods involved the analysis of …

Constitutionalizing Traveling Feminisms In Kenya, Nkatha Kabira
Constitutionalizing Traveling Feminisms In Kenya, Nkatha Kabira
Cornell International Law Journal
This Article uses selected provisions of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 to argue that although elaborate legal and institutional frameworks for promoting women’s empowerment have been adopted in Kenya’s legal framework, implementation of these provisions remains a challenge. Why is the law in the books so different from the law in action? This is the question this Article seeks to address. By mapping out how feminist ideas travel through collective action, colonial encounters, local, regional and world conferences, legislation, and other means, the Article demonstrates that the reason why implementation remains a challenge is that these ideas are often in …

Maximizing Relief: The Benefits Of Combining Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve Block With Sciatic Nerve Block In The Emergency Department, Courtney Smith, Taryn Hoffman
Florida Journal of Emergency Medicine (FJEM)
Low back pain accounts for more than 2.6 million emergency department (ED) visits annually, with 40% of Americans experiencing sciatica at some point in their lives. Our case report describes a patient presenting with atraumatic right-sided low back pain and paresthesias in her right leg. We utilized a combination of a transgluteal sciatic nerve block and a lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block to achieve improved pain relief after an initial isolated transgluteal sciatic nerve block left her with persistent anterolateral thigh pain.
We detail the technique for performing this procedure under ultrasound guidance. Our patient experienced significant pain improvement and …

Narrative Inquiry As Contemplative Methodology, Lauren A.H. Brown
Narrative Inquiry As Contemplative Methodology, Lauren A.H. Brown
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This reflective essay describes how contemplative practices, including mindfulness, presence, deep listening, contemplative reading, free writing, visualization, bearing witness, and loving kindness, were engaged during my doctoral research study. As a novice researcher but experienced practitioner, contemplative practice guided my research and creative processes, allowing me to present a deeper understanding of the participants in my study while simultaneously bringing a heartfulness to my ethical decisions. While it is not uncommon for researchers to draw on their existing skills in mindfulness and other contemplative practices, I propose that contemplative practice is central to narrative inquiry research, making it both a …
