Intestinal Stromal Cells Play A Critical Role In Protection Mediated By Male Microbiota-Derived Metabolites And Androgens Against Disease In Lupus-Prone Mice., Jing Ma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease involving broad immune dysregulation. Despite decades of research, most lupus treatments still have limited effectiveness and can cause serious side effects. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to lupus susceptibility, and a better understanding of how environmental factors influence disease could guide future therapeutic strategies. SLE shows a strong female predominance. Growing evidence implicates the gut microbiota and sex hormones as key environmental contributors to some autoimmune diseases, including lupus. The gut microbiota can influence host immune function, and interestingly, recent studies have revealed sex-bias in microbiota composition and function. Moreover, …
Synthetic And Pharmacological Diversity Of Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles., Shramana Ghosh
Synthetic And Pharmacological Diversity Of Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles., Shramana Ghosh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen-containing heterocycles are a foundational class of compounds in organic chemistry, playing critical roles in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and natural products due to their structural diversity and biological relevance. Among them, isoindolinones are notable for their wide range of pharmacological activities. Structurally, isoindolinones possess a benzylic methylene group adjacent to the nitrogen atom, which allows for selective oxidative transformations to yield phthalimide derivatives, well-known intermediates in synthetic, pharmaceutical, and materials chemistry. Although phthalimide is traditionally employed as a protecting group for amines via the Gabriel synthesis, isoindolinone offers a valuable alternative. Through a modified Gabriel-like approach, isoindolinones can serve as more …

Predictor-Informed Bayesian Nonparametric Clustering., Md Yasin Ali Parh
Predictor-Informed Bayesian Nonparametric Clustering., Md Yasin Ali Parh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we performed clustering of observations such that the cluster membership is influenced by a set of predictors. To that end, we employ the Bayesian nonparametric Common Atom Model (CAM), which is a nested clustering algorithm that utilizes a (fixed) group membership for each observation to encourage more similar clustering of members of the same group. CAM operates by assuming each group has its own vector of cluster probabilities, which are themselves clustered to allow similar clustering for some groups. We extend this approach by treating the group membership as an unknown latent variable determined as a flexible …

Rhetorical Analysis Of Kristen Bell's Articulation Of Imperfect Motherhood On Armchair Expert., Sarah J. Neff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how Kristen Bell’s articulation of imperfect motherhood, as heard on the popular podcast Armchair Expert, contributes to broader social discourses surrounding motherhood, empowering some mothers while inadvertently constraining others. Using rhetorical analysis grounded in Goffman’s dramaturgical approach, facework theory, and McGee’s theory of fragments, this study explores Bell’s discourse and performance of motherhood within the podcast medium. The podcasting medium provides a rich source for rhetorical analysis due to the long form interview content, and emotionally nuanced content, leading to a stronger connection with the audience. This is evident with the new headlines that follow Bell’s appearance …
Role Of Cardiac Ketone Body Metabolism In Myocardial Perfusion And Exercise Performance., Kara R. Gouwens
Role Of Cardiac Ketone Body Metabolism In Myocardial Perfusion And Exercise Performance., Kara R. Gouwens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cardiorespiratory fitness, a crucial determinant of overall health and a strong predictor of all-cause mortality, is largely dependent on the capacity of the cardiovascular system to deliver oxygen and nutrients. The heart, as the central pump, requires a continuous and adaptable oxygen supply, particularly during increased workload such as occurs with exercise. Impaired myocardial blood flow (MBF) in response to increased demand can lead to ischemia, limiting exercise capacity and potentially causing severe cardiac events. Interestingly, changes in myocardial metabolism and cardiac work correlate with changes in MBF. Therefore, understanding the regulation of MBF, especially the link between local cardiac …

Comparative Impacts Of Irradiation On Antioxidant Compounds Of Scalded And Non-Scalded Skin Of Granny Smith Apples, Angela Banda
Food Science (MS) Theses
Post-harvest Superficial scald affects the quality of Granny Smith Apples. Oxidative stress develops superficial scald with antioxidant systems mitigating the extent of this damage. This study evaluated the effects of gamma, X-ray, and electron beam irradiation on antioxidants – ascorbic acid, total phenolics, α-tocopherol, carotenoids, chlorophyll, and campesterol – in scalded and non-scalded apple peel tissue. Apples were treated with 0.2-0.77 kGy and stored at 0-1 °C. Irradiation at the applied doses increased scald incidence, suggesting that disruption of antioxidant systems promoted reactive oxygen species accumulation and membrane damage. While certain antioxidants appeared to be upregulated as a stress response, …

Dissecting The Heterogeneous Effects Of Opioid Prescribing Limit Laws On Pediatric Mortality: A Multidimensional And Negative Binomial Modeling Approach, Francine R. Vega
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Opioid prescribing for children and adolescents continues to be a significant health crisis in the United States. Early naïve exposure to opioid prescriptions has been linked to later misuse, opioid use disorder, and death. In response to the crisis, many states have implemented opioid prescribing limit laws (OPLLs) aimed at reducing exposure to opioids. These laws vary widely in their approach, including differences in dosage restrictions, prescription duration limits, informed consent requirements, educational provisions, and whether they offer explicit protections specifically for minors. Despite their widespread adoption, there is limited understanding of how heterogeneity in legal regulations affects outcomes for …
Rethinking Health Systems Responsiveness In Low–And Middle-Income Countries, Meesha Iqbal
Rethinking Health Systems Responsiveness In Low–And Middle-Income Countries, Meesha Iqbal
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Health systems responsiveness (HSR) refers to a health system’s ability to meet legitimate non-health expectations of the population. Traditionally, HSR has been conceptualized across eight domains: respect for dignity, autonomy, confidentiality, prompt attention to health needs, availability of basic amenities, choice of provider, access to social support networks, and clarity of communication. However, as the expectations of populations in high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (L&MICs) differ significantly due to diverse social and cultural contexts, the conceptualization of HSR also varies. We conducted a systematic review of literature to adapt and contextualize the HSR framework for L&MICs based …
