Staff Education To Use The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 To Improve Identification Of Depression Among Mental Health Clients, Lukresia Bhwanshe Kawira Aug 2025

Staff Education To Use The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 To Improve Identification Of Depression Among Mental Health Clients, Lukresia Bhwanshe Kawira

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This doctoral project was an educational intervention to improve depression screening in a health clinic through standardized training using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The targeted practice issue was the variable use of the PHQ-9 which led to possible misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis of depression, a critically vital issue in nursing practice owing to the necessity of frontline mental status evaluation by nursing staff. The practice focused question was, for staff in a mental health clinic, will training on the use of the PHQ-9 tool increase knowledge toward the goal of improving the identification of depression among clients? Hence, the overall …

Abundance And Demography Of The Wood Turtle (Glyptemys Insculpta) Across Two River Systems In Michigan’S Lower Peninsula, Marianne Kelso Aug 2025

Abundance And Demography Of The Wood Turtle (Glyptemys Insculpta) Across Two River Systems In Michigan’S Lower Peninsula, Marianne Kelso

Masters Theses

Turtles worldwide are declining from habitat loss and fragmentation, predation, and illegal collection, and their slow life histories and sensitivity to environmental change make reliable abundance and demographic data critical for conservation. Wood turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) are declining across much of their range, yet baseline information is lacking in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. To fill that gap, we performed standardized visual mark–recapture surveys at 27 one-kilometer river reaches in two distinct watershed systems during springs of 2022 and 2023. Using hierarchical N-mixture models with negative binomial mixtures to account for imperfect detection, we estimated site-level latent abundance and evaluated …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Aims: An intrinsic feature of gene transcription is the formation of DNA superhelices near the transcription bubble, which are resolved upon induction of transient double-stranded breaks (DSBs) by topoisomerases. Unrepaired DSBs are pathogenic as they lead to cell cycle arrest, senescence, inflammation, and organ dysfunction. We posit that DSBs would be more prevalent at the genomic sites that are associated with gene expression. The objectives were to identify and characterize genome-wide DSBs at the nucleotide resolution and determine the association of DSBs with transcription in cardiac myocytes.

Methods and results: We identified the genome-wide DSBs in ∼1 million cardiac myocytes …

Timely Resection Of Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma Following Embolization For Uncontrolled Acute Epistaxis Case Report., Koffi L. Lakpa, Timothy Mcculloch, Michael D. Puricelli

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Uncontrolled epistaxis in patients with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma requires prompt intervention. When embolization is required, neovascularization can occur, making expedited surgical resection essential. We conducted a single-institution, retrospective review of one patient. This case study details the patient's clinical presentation and his preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative course. We present the management of a 14-year-old male with a juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, who 3 days after initial evaluation at our institution, developed uncontrolled epistaxis requiring embolization at an outside hospital before transfer back to our institution for further management. He initially presented to an outside emergency department with acute epistaxis refractory to …

Hiv-1 Controllers Possess A Unique Cd8+ T Cell Activation Phenotype And Loss Of Control Is Associated With Increased Expression Of Exhaustion Markers, Amber D. Jones, Zachary Capriotti, Erin Santos, Angel Lin, Rachel Van Duyne, Stephen Smith, Zachary Klase

Kimmel Cancer Center Papers, Presentations, and Grand Rounds

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 controllers are a rare population of individuals that exhibit spontaneous control of HIV-1 infection without antiretroviral therapy. Understanding the mechanisms by which HIV-1 controllers maintain and eventually lose this ability would be highly valuable in HIV-1 cure or vaccine research. Previous work revealed the ability of CD8+ T cells isolated from HIV-1 controllers to suppress HIV-1 replication in matched CD4+ T cells and PBMCs ex vivo and suggested the loss of control may be tied to CD8+ T cell exhaustion.

RESULTS: We explored whether CD8+ T cell exhaustion plays a role in the maintenance and loss of control …

First Principles Materials Discovery And Design For Photovoltaic And Solar Thermal Alloys Using High Throughput Methods, Andrew Pike

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Materials selection has been a challenge since the dawn of time. With the advent of computational methods and high throughput databases, materials can be discovered and assessed before they are even synthesized. In this thesis I will discuss my work towards designing new materials for clean energy uses, especially alloys which have been underexplored from computational methods. To begin, I present a case study explaining the synthesis of the Yb14ZnSb11 thermoelectric material. Next, I explore the class of AM2Pn2 Zintl materials. From the previously identified BaCd2P2, it is suspected that …

Peptide-Based Inorganic Nanoparticles As Efficient Intracellular Delivery Systems, Amir Nasrolahi Shirazi, Rajesh Vadlapatla, Ajoy Koomer, Anthony Nguyen, Vian Khoury, Keykavous Parang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background/Objectives: Peptide-based inorganic nanoparticles (PINPs) have emerged as promising candidates for intracellular delivery due to their unique structural and functional attributes. These hybrid nanostructures combine the high surface area and tunable optical/magnetic properties of metal cores (e.g., Au, Ag, Fe3O4) with the biocompatibility, targeting specificity, and responsive behavior of peptides. In particular, peptides with amphipathic or cell-penetrating features could facilitate efficient transport of molecular cargos across cellular membranes while enabling stimulus-responsive drug release in target tissues. Methods: We review key synthesis methods (especially green, peptide-mediated one-pot approaches), functionalization strategies (e.g., thiol-gold bonds, click chemistries), and characterization techniques (TEM, …

An Antioxidant Approach To Ameliorate The Effects Of Radiation And Chemotherapy On Cognition, Raymond Anan Otoo Aug 2025

An Antioxidant Approach To Ameliorate The Effects Of Radiation And Chemotherapy On Cognition, Raymond Anan Otoo

Theses and Dissertations

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a hematologic malignancy that primarily affects children and young adults. While advancements in treatment—including chemotherapy and cranial irradiation—have significantly improved 5-year survival rates in children to nearly 90%, radiation-induced cognitive impairment (RICI) remains a persistent and debilitating side effect. The brain, particularly the hippocampus, is highly susceptible to radiation-induced oxidative stress and inflammation. In the treatment of ALL, the combined use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy contributes to a heightened oxidative burden, exacerbating the risk of cognitive dysfunction. Although previous studies have linked radiation exposure to neurocognitive decline, the molecular mechanisms underlying RICI and chemotherapy-induced cognitive …

Staff Education Project For Enhancing Medication Adherence In Mental Health: An Evidence-Based Education Program For Healthcare Practitioners In Outpatient Clinics, Rita Erina Pyuzza

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The staff education project was designed to address medication non-adherence among mental health patients in an outpatient psychiatric clinic by enhancing the knowledge and skills of mental health nurses and nurse practitioners. The lack of structured, evidence-based training on medication adherence strategies has contributed to poor patient outcomes, increased hospitalizations, and higher healthcare costs. Clinic patient reports indicated 50% medication non-adherence, highlighting the need to address non-adherence through effective nursing-led education, medication management, and adherence monitoring. The project assessed whether enhancing the outpatient healthcare providers’ skills and knowledge through a structured, evidence-based program would improve the providers’ medication adherence strategies. …

The Impact Of Housing Stress On Fertility Intentions Among Young People In Urban China, Fei Ouyang Aug 2025

The Impact Of Housing Stress On Fertility Intentions Among Young People In Urban China, Fei Ouyang

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Housing has been recognised as an important factor associated with decreasing fertility in urban China. Despite a growing number of studies dedicated to the investigation of the impact of adverse housing conditions on fertility intentions, the understanding of housing-fertility nexus remains relatively fragmented, characterised by an incomplete picture of housing stressors and conflicting findings that fail to explain why some people experiencing adverse housing conditions tend to have lower fertility intentions whilst others do not. Framing the transactional theory of stress into the housing contexts, this study redefined housing stress to enhance its explanation compared with correlation explanations in the …

Adult-Child Caregivers’ Fear And Coping Regarding The Risk Of Inheriting Alzheimer’S Disease, Rebecca Anne Ledbetter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Caring for elderly parents with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) poses two major challenges for adult-child caregivers: the tasks involved in taking care of ailing parents and also potentially living in fear of developing the same disease. This research examined how caregivers with such fear regard their vulnerability to AD and how they manage the stress that comes with caregiving for someone with a disease they dread developing themselves. This grounded theory study employed the appraisal theory of emotions and the theory of moods as frameworks and aimed to establish awareness regarding coping strategies that adult-child caregivers have about caretaking and their …
