Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea, Tunga penetrans which penetrates the skin causing considerable pain and itching. In this cross-sectional study we aimed to assess its impact on the quality of life of school children in Kenya. School pupils (198) aged 8–14 years with tungiasis were randomly selected and interviewed using a tungiasis-specific quality of life instrument (TLQI). The caregivers of each infected pupil and 199 randomly selected caregivers of uninfected pupils were interviewed using the proxy KIDscreen52 to assess their child’s general health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). Generalized linear models were used to …

Background: Health workers in the frontline are the major drivers of health systems in low- and middle-income countries. However, these health workers face both chronic and acute shocks and stressors that expose them to mental health problems which are often overlooked. We examined the prevalence of mental health problems, correlates of psychological functioning, and resilience of frontline health workers in Uganda.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study comprising 1800 frontline health workers across all regions of Uganda from August through October 2023. We used tools such as the PC-PTSD-5, PHQ9, PSS, GAD-7, Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, and CD-RISC-10 to assess PTSD, …

Why Financial Crises Recur, Gary B. Gorton, Jeffery Y. Zhang
Why Financial Crises Recur, Gary B. Gorton, Jeffery Y. Zhang
Law & Economics Working Papers
Financial crises have occurred around the world for over two centuries. These crises have been so costly and frequent that one wonders why governments cannot prevent them from recurring despite repeated, wide-ranging attempts at legislation, regulation, supervision, and enforcement.
In this article, we argue that lawmakers repeatedly act in two ways that may appear to be intuitive but are actually detrimental to system-wide stability. First, lawmakers fail to understand that “banks”—both traditional banks and shadow banks—produce runnable short-term debt, unlike other firms in the economy. To produce short-term debt, banks operate with opacity. Yet a regulatory framework based on secrecy …

A 73-year-old woman with a remote history of successfully treated primary hyperparathyroidism was referred to our office because of multiple skeletal fractures and proximal muscle weakness. Prior laboratory evaluation demonstrated hypocalcemia, vitamin D deficiency, elevated PTH, and elevated alkaline phosphatase. Updated evaluation in our clinic additionally showed hypophosphatemia prompting measurement of serum fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). FGF23 proved to be markedly elevated prompting consideration of tumor-induced osteomalacia. Positron emission tomography with Cu-64 oxodotreotide revealed an enhancing focus in the left thoracic spine that was confirmed on magnetic resonance imaging to be a 1.5-cm extradural mass. The patient underwent surgical …

From The Right To Choose To The Virtuous Victims? Advocating For Reproductive Justice In The United States After Dobbs, Carole J. Petersen
Denver Journal of International Law & Policy
Since Dobbs, advocacy for reproductive justice in the United States has increasingly focused on the “virtuous victims” of state abortion bans—women who wanted to give birth but suddenly required emergency abortion care to preserve their lives or health. These cases now play a prominent role in strategic litigation but may inadvertently promote stereotypical views of women’s role in society. The political fallout may also lead Republicans to propose compromise legislation, with a wider range of compassionate exceptions but increased restrictions on abortion pills. This could have devastating impacts on women who are currently obtaining abortion pills for self-managed abortions. The …

Advancing Reproductive Equality Through Anti-Discrimination Law, Rebecca J. Cook
Denver Journal of International Law & Policy
This article explores various understandings of anti-discrimination law and how different national apex courts, regional human rights tribunals and international human rights treaty bodies have applied them in abortion decisions, particularly in the Global South. Recent jurisprudential and theoretical innovations in anti-discrimination law range from direct discriminatory treatment against individuals to indirect discrimination resulting in disparate impact on groups to systemic forms of discrimination that address underlying gender hierarchies and prejudicial constructions of women, girls and pregnant persons. Whatever form of anti-discrimination law is applied, they all have a role in improving access to essential abortion services and improving the …

Foreshadowing The "Stop Campus Hazing Act": Education, Prevention, And University Liability, Gregory S. Parks, Victoria Surati
West Virginia Law Review
On December 23, 2024, President Joseph R. Biden signed into law the Stop Campus Hazing Act (the “SCHA”). The SCHA amends the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, 20 U.S.C. § 1092(f), a subsection of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (the “Clery Act”). The SCHA defines “hazing” and “student organization,” expands the current Annual Security Reporting requirements, calls for a new form of reporting, and requires policies relating to hazing. It also requires each covered institution of higher education to publish a policy statement regarding hazing awareness and prevention programs that includes a …

"Tik Tok" On The Clock: It's Time To Amend Section 230, Mackenzie G. Howe
West Virginia Law Review
The Communications Decency Act (“CDA”), enacted in 1996, was designed to support the rapid growth of the Internet, advancing access to political information, educational resources, culture, entertainment, and news. However, Section 230 of the CDA includes a key provision that grants nearly absolute immunity to online platforms such as Facebook, X, and TikTok. This provision states: “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” Despite the Supreme Court’s apprehension to reexamine Section 230, the Third Circuit took a novel approach to potentially …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Potential Health Risks Of Non-Formfitting Body Armor With A Focus On Female Warfighters, Melissa Sutter, Catherine E. Johnson
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Introduction Body armor is an important piece of protective equipment for warfighters in battlefield environments. With more women now filling military roles, body armor designs may need to be further refined to accommodate the female anatomy instead of the male-based unisex designs. Unisex designs have been found to have negative effects on female warfighter performance, resulting in discomfort, breathing difficulty, and air gaps forming between the armor and torso. This study aimed to investigate increased injury risk because of air gaps from shock wave exposure on warfighters wearing nonform-fitting armor and the influence of material properties. Based on literature, lowered …

Customer Food Intake: An Empirical Analysis Of Gender, Restaurant Use And Attitude Toward Fast Food Among Adolescents And Young Adults, In Nairobi, Kenya, Gerishom G. Madivoli, Rosemarie Ayuma Khayiya, Beatrice Kamau
Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism
Fast food is the fastest- growing food category worldwide, providing young people and adolescents with a quick, cost- effective, and easily accessible alternative to home- cooked meals. There has been considerably less research into how gender, restaurant usage, and attitudes influence patterns of fast- food consumption. Moreover, the growth of the fast- food industry in every nation creates a significant environmental impetus for increasing fast food consumption and promoting unhealthy eating behaviours. If this issue is not addressed, the prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, along with the costs of managing these conditions, will escalate, particularly in Kenya. This …
Reframing Service Quality In Ai-Powered Hospitality Environments, Olena Ciftci
Reframing Service Quality In Ai-Powered Hospitality Environments, Olena Ciftci
Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism
The hospitality and tourism industry is experiencing a technological shift through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), transforming both guest experiences and service operations. While AI offers hyper-personalization, efficiency, and scalability, it challenges traditional notions of service quality rooted in human interaction. This viewpoint explores the emerging concept of tech-augmented hospitality, where AI and human employees co-create guest experiences. The paper highlights key research directions for reconceptualizing service quality in the era of AI-enhanced hospitality. It argues for the development of new evaluative frameworks that encompass hybrid service models, cultural adaptability, inclusivity, and AI literacy.

Subcutaneous Facial Emphysema And Pneumomediastinum Following A Class V Dental Restoration: A Case Report, Jonathan Tran Dds, Brian M. Will, Sidney B. Eisig D.D.S., Facs
The New York State Dental Journal
Cervicofacial subcutaneous emphysema is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of dental procedures. While classically associated with surgical extractions performed with dental high-speed handpieces instead of surgical rear-exhaust handpieces, it has been documented following other dental procedures, including restorative and endodontic treatments. As cervicofacial air emphysema spreads, it may reach the retropharyngeal space, which connects to the mediastinum, leading to pneumomediastinum and a risk for mediastinitis, which carries a high mortality rate. We present a case of cervicofacial subcutaneous emphysema leading to pneumomediastinum following a Class V restoration on tooth #28 to highlight the importance of recognizing this underdiagnosed complication.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) transforms the entrepreneurial landscape by providing contextual information, identifying viable opportunities, and facilitating entrepreneurial decision-making. Despite the growing acknowledgment of its use in entrepreneurial activities, this field lacks a robust theoretical framework and practical implementation. This study seeks to fill this gap by drawing on information behavior literature to explore the effect of GenAI across the entrepreneurial spectrum. By leveraging large language models and prompt engineering patterns, we examined how GenAI could generate accurate, relevant, and inspiring content through various interaction scenarios. Our findings suggest that GenAI significantly mitigates early-stage entrepreneurial information asymmetry and supports sophisticated …

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
As climate change progresses, alpine plant communities are predicted to shift upslope as they track temperature over time. Relative to lowland environments, alpine areas are experiencing a faster rate of temperature change due to a phenomenon referred to as elevation-dependent warming. A common approach for tracking plant communities shifts over time, is to conduct resurveys of the same area at several time points, as the Global Observational Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA) has done on mountain summits around the world since 2001. In 2011-2013, GLORIA developed a supplemental survey method whereby belt transects were established downslope of summits in …
