Taming The Hegemon: Chinese Thinking On Countering U.S. Military Intervention In Asia, Joel Wuthnow
Taming The Hegemon: Chinese Thinking On Countering U.S. Military Intervention In Asia, Joel Wuthnow
China Strategic Perspectives
This publication is by INSS Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs Senior Research Fellow Dr. Joel Wuthnow. The monograph uses internal PLA writings to examine recent Chinese thinking on countering U.S. intervention in Asia, and finds that PLA experts emphasize efforts to leverage nuclear, conventional, and informational (space, cyber, and cognitive warfare) tools to deter U.S. intervention, but also advocate preparing for asymmetric attacks against key targets in the U.S. military system in case the United States intervenes anyway.

Journal of Youth Development
Preparing youth, primarily as they become high school graduates, to be ready to enter college and careers, has been a primary driving force in primary and secondary education for over 20 years. However, there lacks consistency in the definition and of the true idea of college and career readiness in the twentyfirst century. Additionally, there is a lack of research examining the impacts that student involvement in youth organizations has on the development of college and career-readiness skills. One facet of college and career readiness is the development of critical thinking skills and dispositions, which include enjoying solving problems, respecting …

A Tailored Analog-To-Digital Converter Architecture For Optimal Performance In Troponin Cardiac Protein Detection, Karem Abdelgawad, Sameh O. Abdellatif
Electrical Engineering
In recent years, the detection of troponin cardiac proteins has emerged as a crucial component in the diagnosis and management of acute coronary syndromes. This paper presents a tailored analog-to digital converter(ADC) architecture specifically designed to enhance the performance of diagnostic systems for troponin detection. Utilizing a 180 nm CMOS process technology, the developed 8-bit Successive Approximation Register(SAR) ADC integrates key components, including a preamplifier, comparator, and a digital-to-analog converter(DAC), to optimize signal processing and ensure accurate data conversion from analog to digital formats. The ADC architecture is evaluated for its ability to achieve a substantial sampling rate of 10 …

Background: Very low birth weight (VLBW) neonates (≤1500 grams) transported across neonatal facilities often require advanced respiratory support, including high-frequency ventilation (HFV). While HFV use in this setting has increased, data evaluating its safety and efficacy in the VLBW population remain limited. We hypothesized that HFV will provide a safe modality to transport sick VLBW infants. Objectives: To present a comparative experience of safety and efficacy of HFV and CV in VLBW neonates during interfacility transport. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed neonates ≤1500g who received invasive ventilation during interfacility transport by our transport team between January 2019 and December 2022. HFV …

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Accurate prognostication following pediatric severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) remains challenging. Adult neuroprognostication guidelines recommend the use of prediction models that have not yet been validated in pediatric patients. We hypothesized certain continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) characteristics would be associated with unfavorable short-term outcome. METHODS: This was an IRB-approved, 7-year retrospective cohort study of children aged 1.5-18 years admitted to our PICU from 01/2018-12/2024 with sTBI and receiving cEEG monitoring per institutional standard management protocol. cEEG patterns (background, sleep architecture, reactivity, and electrographic seizure) during the first 12-hours of monitoring were analyzed for association with unfavorable short-term outcome at PICU …

Introduction: Genetic variants in TPMT and NUDT15 that affect the metabolism of mercaptopurine (6MP) are routinely tested for to guide 6MP dosing. Nudix hydroxylase 15 (NUDT15) deficiency can cause myelosuppression when affected patients are treated with 6MP. The NUDT15 *6 allele is classified as having uncertain function by the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium Guidelines given insufficient data to determine its phenotype. Here, we present the case of a pediatric patient with the NUDT15 *1/*6 genotype experiencing significant mercaptopurine-induced myelosuppression. Case Description: We present a 4-year-old female with standard risk-average precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated per AALL1731. Exome sequencing reported …

Background: The Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised (ADI-R) is a caregiver interview that is widely used as part ofthe diagnostic assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Few large-scale studies have reported the sensitivityand specificity of the ADI-R algorithms, which are based on DSM-IV Autistic Disorder criteria. Kim and Lord (Journalof Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2012, 42, 82) developed revised DSM-5-based toddler algorithms, which areonly applicable to children under 4 years. The current study developed DSM-5-based algorithms for children ages4–17 years and examined their performance compared to clinical diagnosis and to the original DSM-IV-basedalgorithms. Methods: Participants included 2,905 cases (2,144 ASD, 761 …

Using youth mentors to deliver evidence-based psychosocial services has been proposed to increase the reach of treatments, in part given the affordability and ubiquity of mentors in youth settings. Further, tests of mentor-delivered motivational interviewing (MI) have shown increases in youth mentees' academic performance and wellbeing. Yet, traditional methods of training mentors to use MI can be costly and time-consuming. Previous work has suggested the value of asynchronous, brief, just-in-time training (JITT) to help offset these challenges; however, MI JITT for mentors has not yet been formally evaluated. As such, here, we report on a preliminary study of MI JITT …

Objective
Despite evidence-based interventions for psychiatric disorders that often precede suicidality, suicide remains a leading cause of death among youth. There has been increased interest in whether preventive interventions targeting early risk factors lead to decreased distal risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). This study examined the impact of Coping Power (CP), a school-based preventive intervention targeting externalizing problems, on STBs.Method
The sample included 3,182 youths (36.4% female; 77.3% Black) who participated in 1 of 11 randomized controlled trials of CP. Individual-level data across trials were harmonized using integrative data analysis to address cross-study variation in measurement of …Knowledge, Attitude, And Practice Towards Cervical Cancer Screening Among Women Aged 20 Years And Above In Mysuru, India, Sneha Manosh Kumar, Rashmi S, Amogha Shree

Backing up your office computer data and encompassing your practice management software, your imaging software and everything your office needs to treat patients and do business are essential, for you never know when a disaster might strike, making it crucial to have daily backups of electronic records and office data, preferably both cloud and physical storage. One very prudent recommendation offered to me by the New York City Small Business Service grant program after Hurricane Sandy destroyed my office 13 years ago was to have a battery backup system in my newly built office. This would improve resiliency during a …

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the necessity of effective face masks in both public and healthcare settings for mitigating the spread of disease. However, traditional face masks impede communication, posing significant challenges for approximately 13% of the general population and 10% of healthcare and social assistance workers who have hearing loss and who rely on lipreading and other non-verbal cues. Traditional surgical masks and N95 respirator masks serve important roles in healthcare, but they differ in levels of protection. Currently, a transparent surgical mask is available, but not an N95 version. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the usability, fit, …
Constitutional Rights As Protected Reasons, Stephanie Hall Barclay
Constitutional Rights As Protected Reasons, Stephanie Hall Barclay
University of Chicago Law Review
This Article proposes and defends a new theoretical model of constitutional rights. Virtually all the prevailing theories about constitutional rights envision, at some level, judges balancing the importance of various individual rights against the importance of other societal goods in tension with those rights. These theories also generally hold out the judiciary as the primary guardian of these rights, whereas the other political branches are often viewed as fulfilling a role of interfering with (or protecting) rights only as much as the judiciary will allow. This Article explains why the existing accounts of constitutional rights are either incoherent or incomplete. …
The Amended Statute, Jesse M. Cross
The Amended Statute, Jesse M. Cross
University of Chicago Law Review
We live in a republic of amended statutes. In each Congress, our laws are amended tens of thousands of times. Individual statutes make amendments that number in the thousands. As a result, the amended statute has become the central democratic text of our age—a remarkable development for a type of document unknown at the Founding. Yet the amended statute has been relegated to an after-thought in legal theory. This is incredible neglect for an essential source of modern law—one that anchors innumerable rights in U.S. society.
This Article demonstrates that, instead, the amended statute belongs at the center of public …

Early Adult Outcomes Of 4-H Program Alumni: A Propensity-Matched Comparative Study, Steven M. Worker, Roshan K. Nayak, Anne Marie Iaccopucci, Nicole Marshall-Wheeler
Journal of Youth Development
A young person’s engagement in high-quality youth development programs should lead to stronger positive outcomes as a young adult. Theoretical literature advances broad indicators that mark success in young adulthood; however, there is a dearth of empirical publications reporting long-term outcomes to support this assumption. We conducted a cross-sectional survey study to report on three long-term outcomes (economic stability, health and well-being, and community involvement) of young adult (aged 19 to 34) alumni of the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program. We compared 4-H alumni outcomes to matched peers using secondary data sources. The 4-H alumni sample demonstrated more …
The God Prompt And Deus Ex Machina: Techno-Theological Tropes And Operational Metaphors In Generative Media, James Hutson
The God Prompt And Deus Ex Machina: Techno-Theological Tropes And Operational Metaphors In Generative Media, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study reframes two durable tropes—the ―God Prompt‖ and the deus ex machina—as analytic lenses for understanding how contemporary generative systems stage beginnings and endings of cultural production. The ―God Prompt‖ denotes command-driven synthesis in which minimal textual instructions instantiate content on demand, crystallizing a production loop of input, model execution, and post hoc evaluation that orients anticipation toward instantaneous yield and controllable variation. The deus ex machina names an externally imposed resolution that interrupts causal development—historically a crane-borne god, functionally an algorithmic override—thereby concentrating attention on closure mechanics rather than world-building continuity. Read together, the pair offers a compact …

Designing For Complementarity: Skills, Work, And Education In The Age Of Ai — A Review, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This review synthesizes 2023–2025 evidence on how generative AI and automation are reconfiguring role structures, skill demands, and entry pathways, and proposes design principles that shift attention from task substitution to role redesign and talent architecture. Theoretical framework: Drawing on task-based labor economics, socio-technical systems design, and humancapital complementarity, the review distinguishes domains where substitution pressures concentrate from those where augmentation dominates. Method: A narrative review of peerreviewed studies, official statistics, and policy/industry reports prioritized empirically grounded findings on employment effects, skills, governance, and program outcomes; inclusion emphasized methodological transparency and recency. Results and discussion: Convergent evidence shows contraction in …

The Rare-To-Common Disease Journey: A Winding Road To New Therapies., Laura G Reinholdt, Elissa J Chesler, Martin Pera, Nadia Rosenthal
Faculty Research 2025
The study of genetic variants that cause rare diseases has been a central strategy of genetic research for the last century, but the contribution of rare variants to the multifactorial inheritance of common diseases has only recently emerged as an avenue to accelerate functional mapping of the human genome. This perspective defines rare and common diseases, surveys prospects for integrating their study to decipher pathogenic mechanisms, and cites current clinical hurdles of disease translation. We discuss the premise that research into rare disease etiology can inform our understanding of common illnesses and vice versa, identify impediments to progress in translating …

Electroretinography (ERG) provides a noninvasive functional measure of multiple cell types of the outer retina. We conducted an ERG-based screen of 530 single-gene knockout mouse strains generated as part of the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium, representing 2.5% of all protein-coding genes, to identify genetic variants affecting retinal function. We identified 30 strains with significantly altered ERG amplitudes. Two of the genes identified, Cfap418 and Syne2, have been previously reported with outer retinal dysfunction, thereby serving as internal controls that validate our screening protocol. Of the remaining 28 genes newly associated with altered retinal function, the majority lacked a contemporaneous histopathology …
