Bonding With Earth: Hyperbole, Metaphor, Or Fanciful Teleology?, George Conesa
Bonding With Earth: Hyperbole, Metaphor, Or Fanciful Teleology?, George Conesa
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
At a mere glance, the notion that humans could (should strive for?) bond emotionally with an entire planet, Earth, sounds hyperbolic at best and psychologically unsound at worst. For although humans might be motivated to act in ways that pass for “bonding,” perhaps assisted by intentions and sentiments to care for a whole planet, the question remains: Which notion of Earth are they really investing all their emotions in? Important to psychologists would be to inquire whether incomplete, idealized, oversimplified, or fantastic notions of “Earth,” or bonding, turn out to be transference-love-like, platonic, overidealized forms of affect, which seldom develop …

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers
Ultrasound triggered microbubble destruction (UTMD) has been shown to sensitize tumors to radiation. This study evaluated the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of using UTMD for radiosensitization in participants with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and/or metastatic disease to the liver (MDL) receiving Yttrium-90 transarterial radioembolization (Y90-TARE). This was a prospective single-center IRB-approved clinical trial. Participants received four contrast ultrasound sessions: 1-2 weeks prior to Y90-TARE, 1-4 h post-treatment, and 1 week and 2 weeks post-Y90-TARE. The control group consisted of 1:1 nearest-neighbor propensity score matched historical controls participants that received Y90-TARE as part of standard-of-care. Safety was evaluated through general lab values, …

Self-Transcendent Experiences As Promoters Of Ecological Wellbeing? Exploration Of The Evidence And Hypotheses To Be Tested, Amy Isham
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
In recent years, much has been written on the role of different mental states and their potential to influence our way of thinking and, perhaps more importantly, the way we act. With the recent acceleration of environmental and mental health issues, alongside the limited effectiveness of existing interventions, an exploration of new approaches to deliver transformative change is required. We therefore explore the emerging potential of a type of mental state known as self-transcendent experiences (STEs) as a driver of ecological wellbeing. We focus on four types of STEs: those facilitated by experiences of flow, awe, and mindfulness, as well …

Modern Zombies As Subaltern In Max Brooks’S World War Z: An Oral History Of The Zombie War (2006), Hamza Alwan Jaber, Azhar Noori Fejer
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Max Brooks’s World War Z (2006) has made many contributions to the zombie genre, particularly in making it an international plague. With key situations occurring in the Middle East, which in the Christian tradition will be the location of the “End of Days,” the Apocalypse, the Armageddon at the Megiddo. While Brooks was not the first to assign infectious disease/plague/epidemiology as the cause of zombies, he emphasized that explanation for the 21st-century culture that has been rife with fears of disease and pandemics, from Ebola, Bird flu, etc. This study aims to show the image of the modern zombie as …

The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict Through Chomsky And Bremmer’S Interviews: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Noora Jameel, Sarab Khalil
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is seen as one of the most serious and controversial issues in the world. In this paper, the researcher seeks to highlight some crucial points with regard to this conflict by adopting critical discourse analysis (CDA) as the primary means of analysis. Since conflicts are usually accompanied by social wrongs, it is more appropriate to use Fairclough’s 2010 approach to CDA in order to get more logical results. However, the study aims to provide a critical analysis of two selected interview by two famous figures; Ian Bremmer and Noam Chomsky in order to highlight the following points: …

Histone H3 trimethylation at lysine 36 (H3K36me3) is a key chromatin modification that regulates fundamental physiological and pathological processes. In humans, SETD2 is the only known enzyme that catalyzes H3K36me3 in somatic cells and is implicated in tumor suppression across multiple cancer types. While there is considerable crosstalk between the SETD2-H3K36me3 axis and other epigenetic modifications, much remains to be understood. Here, we show that Setd2 functions as a potent tumor suppressor in a KRASG12C-driven lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) mouse model, and that acetylation enhances SETD2 in vitro methylation of H3K36 on nucleosome substrates. In vivo, Setd2 ablation accelerates lethality in …
Bayesian Clustering Prior With Overlapping Indices For Effective Use Of Multisource External Data, Xuetao Lu, J Jack Lee
Bayesian Clustering Prior With Overlapping Indices For Effective Use Of Multisource External Data, Xuetao Lu, J Jack Lee
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The use of external data in clinical trials offers numerous advantages, such as reducing enrollment, increasing study power, and shortening trial duration. In Bayesian inference, information in external data can be transferred into an informative prior for future borrowing (i.e. prior synthesis). However, multisource external data often exhibits heterogeneity, which can cause information distortion during the prior synthesizing. Clustering helps identifying the heterogeneity, enhancing the congruence between synthesized prior and external data. Obtaining optimal clustering is challenging due to the trade-off between congruence with external data and robustness to future data. We introduce two overlapping indices: the overlapping clustering index …

This comprehensive report describes the economy of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, outlining both persistent issues and emerging opportunities. The region faces several structural challenges, including a decline in prime-age workers and bachelor’s degree attainment that falls below state and national averages, while shortages in housing and healthcare further limit its ability to attract and retain residents. Despite those challenges, the U.P.’s universities, longstanding industries, abundant natural resources, and robust outdoor recreation economy provide strong foundations for future development. The report recommends strategies such as strengthening retention of the talent pipeline, expanding housing and healthcare capacity, fostering small and mid-sized firms in …

All Works
This study investigates journalistic interventionism within the diverse media landscape of the Global South. Journalism in these regions sometimes takes an interventionist approach. Understanding this approach necessitates moving beyond Western-centric paradigms that may overlook Global South media’s distinctive historical, political, economic, and sociocultural circumstances. The primary objective of this research is to understand the manifestation of the interventionist journalistic role performance across various Global South countries, examining its overall prominence and the influential factors that affect interventionist role deployment. The study examines interventionist journalism in 16 Global South nations using quantitative content analysis of 59,391 news items from 153 media …

Water system centralization and decentralization have variously been promoted as key to achieving household water security and Sustainable Development Goal 6.1. We argue that the lack of specificity with which scholars and practitioners use the terms centralization and decentralization limits our understanding of different water system configurations and their impacts. In this Primer, we provide a framework for thinking about levels of (de)centralization across three linked system dimensions: infrastructure, governance, and operations and maintenance. We encourage those analyzing water systems to characterize (de)centralization with respect to these multiple dimensions, as well as the system's broader political-economic and hydro-climatic contexts. Emphasizing …

Digital Healthcare Interventions To Support Parents With Acutely Ill Children At Home: A Systematic Review., Matt Carey, Jane Peters, Anna Chick, Bernie Carter, Lucy Bray, Damian Roland, Sarah Neill
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background Short lived acute illness in children is common, yet their parents often feel uncertain about recognising signs symptoms of acute illness and knowing when to seek medical intervention. This has led to seeking unscheduled or delayed support. Digital and mobile technologies are being used to support individuals with healthcare needs, known as digital health interventions. Parents have access to digital health interventions that provide information regarding children’s health, yet there is limited exploration of how these are used to support decision-making when caring for acutely ill children. This systematic review was undertaken to explore digital interventions to support parents …
Migration Kinetics Of Cadmium And Lead From Ceramic Mugs, Andrew Turner
Migration Kinetics Of Cadmium And Lead From Ceramic Mugs, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Cadmium and Pb are heavy metals of high concern owing to their impacts on human health. In this study, the migration of Cd and Pb from both the interior and exterior (lip area) surfaces of new and second-hand ceramic mugs has been measured as a function of time over a 24-h period using 4 % acetic acid. Via regression analysis, data were fitted with a diffusion equation, yielding reaction rate constants and 24-h migratable concentrations. Migration was more significant from the external surfaces for both metals, and especially where the rim area was overglazed with decorative Cd sulphoselenide pigments. Here, …
