Staff Education On Ethical Considerations For The Implementation Of The Mental Health Triage Scale, Patrick Dioro
Staff Education On Ethical Considerations For The Implementation Of The Mental Health Triage Scale, Patrick Dioro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project, I employed the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model to develop and deliver an educational intervention for emergency department (ED) nurses, with a specific focus on the Mental Health Triage Scale (MHTS). The practice-focused question was: In an emergency room at a mental health facility, how does staff education on the MHTS impact knowledge levels, as measured through pre- and post-education assessments? A needs assessment identified existing knowledge gaps and inconsistencies in triage practices among ED nurses. To address the problem, I developed a 4-week hybrid training program that combined …

Dataset For Lipid And Cholesterol Peroxidation Leads To Α-Crystallin Membrane Aggregation And Cataract Formation, Nawal K. Khadka, Preston Hazen, Oluwaseyi Akinola, Xinzhu Pu, Laxman Mainali
Biophysics Research Data
Purpose: The significant lens chaperone protein α-crystallin (αABc) comprising αA-crystallin (αAc) and αB-crystallin (αBc) subunits is found to form membrane-bound aggregates with age and cataract formation. However, the molecular basis for such aggregate formation is still unclear. Our research aims to elucidate the effect of lipids (phospholipids and sphingolipids) and cholesterol (Chol) peroxidation on the aggregation of αAc, αBc, and αABc to bovine lens nuclear membrane (NM).
Methods: Lipid and Chol peroxidation were induced by photosensitized peroxidation reaction, and topographical images of NM and oxidized-NM (Ox-NM) with and without incubation with αAc, αBc, or αABc were obtained using atomic force …

Impression Motivations And Mental Health In Collegiate Athletes And Musicians: The Benefits Of Promoting Virtues, Mary L. Inman, Olufemi A. Oluyedun, Erin Moran, Brendyn Mroz, Madison Mccreery
Faculty Publications
This study identifies two key impression-management motivations that arise in public settings: promoting virtues and preventing harm to one’s image. We explored their impact on mental health—specifically, socially-based perfectionism and depressive symptoms. Drawing from regulatory-focus theory, we predicted promotion motivations would predict strong mental health, prevention motivations would predict poor mental health, and promotion motivations would buffer against the negative effects of prevention motivations. Collegiate athletes and musicians (N = 262) completed validated measures of impression motivation, perfectionism, and depressive symptoms. Results revealed that athletes reported lower levels of perfectionism and depressive symptoms than did musicians. Across both groups, …

A Comparison Of Whole-Brain Dose During Stereotactic Radiosurgery For Multiple Metastases Across Technology Platforms, Alonso Gutierrez
A Comparison Of Whole-Brain Dose During Stereotactic Radiosurgery For Multiple Metastases Across Technology Platforms, Alonso Gutierrez
All Publications
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is now the gold standard radiation technique for the treatment of multiple brain metastases. By virtue of its targeting accuracy, SRS, relative to whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT), maximizes both the likelihood of tumor ablation while minimizing irradiation (injury) of the uninvolved brain. The extent to which the latter objective is accomplished varies among radiosurgery platforms. In this study, we used a standardized imaging dataset taken from a patient with 10 random brain metastases to calculate the radiation dose delivered to the uninvolved normal brain across a range of modern SRS delivery platforms. This analysis reveals that irradiation of …

USF Patents
Disclosed herein is a series of helical sulfono-γ-AApeptides that mimic the binding mode of the α-helical HD2 domain of B-Cell Lymphoma 9 (BCL9). As disclosed herein, sulfono-γ-AApeptides can structurally and functionally mimic the α-helical domain of BCL9, and selectively disrupt β-catenin/BCL9 PPIs with even higher potency. More intriguingly, these sulfono-γ-AApeptides can enter cancer cells, bind with β-catenin and disrupt β-catenin/BCL PPI, and exhibit excellent cellular activity, which is much more potent than the BCL9 peptide. Furthermore, enzymatic stability studies demonstrated the remarkable stability of the helical sulfono-γ-AApeptides, with no degradation in the presence of pronase for 24 h, augmenting their …

Budget Tradeoffs Shape Food Insecurity Among U.S. Older Adults, Madonna Harrington Meyer, Colleen M. Heflin
Budget Tradeoffs Shape Food Insecurity Among U.S. Older Adults, Madonna Harrington Meyer, Colleen M. Heflin
Population Health Research Brief Series
For low-income older adults, it may be difficult to meet basic needs on a fixed monthly income. Stretching resources can be difficult, especially if unexpected expenses arise, leading many older adults to face difficult budget tradeoffs. Based on the book, Food for Thought: Understanding Older Adults Food Insecurity, this brief summarizes how budget tradeoffs between food and other essential expenses—housing, utilities, medical care, transportation, and personal and cleaning supplies—shape food insecurity among older adults.

Tissue-Like Fracture Toughness And Stress–Relaxation Ability In Pva-Agar-Based Hydrogels For Biomedical Applications, Ismael Lamas Jr., Bhuvana L. Chandrashekar, Cláudia C. Biguetti, Mohammad R. Islam
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Soft tissues exhibit remarkable stretchability, fracture toughness, and stress–relaxation ability. They possess a large water content to support cellular processes. Mimicking such a combination of mechanical and physical properties in hydrogels is important for tissue engineering applications but remains challenging. This work aims to develop a hydrogel that can combine excellent mechanical properties with cellular viability. The research focused on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/agar double-network (DN) hydrogels, fabricated by thermal gelation and freeze–thawing methods. Their mechanical properties were characterized through tension, compression, fracture, and stress–relaxation tests, and their cellular viability was measured through cytotoxicity tests. The results show that the PVA/agar …

Notch1 Reverses Immune Suppression In Small Cell Lung Cancer Through Reactivation Of Sting, Yoo Sun Kim, Haobin Chen, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Downregulation of antigen presentation and lack of immune infiltration are defining features of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), limiting response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). While a high-MHC class I, immune-inflamed subset benefits from ICB, underlying mechanisms of immune response in SCLC have yet to be elucidated. Here we show that in the IMpower133 clinical trial, high, but not low, NOTCH1 expression was significantly associated with longer survival with the addition of ICB to chemotherapy among approximately 80% of SCLC patients with NE-enriched tumors (ASCL1-enriched, HR 0.39, P = 0.0012; NEUROD1-enriched, HR 0.44, P = 0.024). Overexpression or pharmacologic activation …

Who Is In Charge Of Cyber Incidence Response In The Homeland?, Kelly R. M. Ihme, Patrick O'Brien Boling, Michael Zimmerman, Timothy G. Mccormick
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article argues that the fragmented US cybersecurity framework—marked by the absence of a lead agency, insufficient whole-of-government coordination, and inconsistent private-sector compliance— undermines national resilience to cyber threats. Unlike existing literature that often focuses on technical vulnerabilities, this piece highlights systemic governance failures through detailed case studies of the SolarWinds, Colonial Pipeline, and Change Healthcare cyberattacks. The article identifies critical gaps in cyber incident response by drawing on incident reports, policy analysis, and expert commentary and offers actionable recommendations to strengthen national cybersecurity, making it especially relevant for policymakers and military practitioners concerned with protecting critical infrastructure.

Tropical forests are a dominant regulator of the global carbon cycle, exchanging more carbon dioxide with the atmosphere than any other terrestrial biome. Climate models predict unprecedented climatic warming in tropical regions in the coming decades; however, in situ field warming studies are severely lacking in tropical forests. Here we present results from an in situ warming experiment in Puerto Rico, where soil respiration responses to +4 oC warming were assessed half-hourly for a year. Soil respiration rates were 42-204% higher in warmed relative to ambient plots, representing some of the highest soil respiration rates reported for any …
