Learn X Design Conference Series

In the fast landscape of technology and design, UX designers hold a crucial role in molding how users interact with digital products. While one of the primary goals of UX design is to enhance user satisfaction. It is also imperative we must create products for all users. It's increasingly important for UX designers to consider the ethical implications of the design decisions they make. Unfortunately, consideration towards creating a product that everyone can use is lacking. For decades, the healthcare sector was known its unethical behavior. One can look at the Tuskegee experiment, a medical study conducted by the U.S …

Scale Up: Enabling Definitional Discussion In Graphic Design Using A Visual Analogue Scale (Vas), Alis Iacob, Meherunisa Baig

Learn X Design Conference Series

This letter aims to highlight some of the definitional challenges in graphic design research. The authors suggest using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), a psychometric tool traditionally employed in psychology, as a prompt for facilitating discussions around the definition of graphic design. By anchoring the scale's endpoints with the divisive concepts of "form" and "function," the proposal seeks to contextualise these diverse opinions within the historical and current complexities involved in defining graphic design. According to the literature, ambiguous viewpoints often emerge from the nature of the discipline and its evolving practices, perspectives which are frequently influenced by socio-cultural, political, …

Designing Curriculum With A Difference: The Nguzo Saba As Pedagogy, Kathy Moscou Sep 2025

Designing Curriculum With A Difference: The Nguzo Saba As Pedagogy, Kathy Moscou

Learn X Design Conference Series

Design education has not substantially evolved and for generations of design students Eurocentric influence has been canonized. Not surprisingly, design educators perpetuate the ideologies they learned and the practices they have been taught. Non-European design traditions and designers continue to be othered or are made invisible in contemporary curriculum. The centering of Eurocentric design pedagogy and curriculum and decentering of design knowledges and contributions by other cultures, negates the lived experience of Indigenous, Black diaspora and other racialized students and restricts ways to characterize competence. Black students in Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) schools have reported …

From Diamonds To Braids: New Metaphors For Teaching Transformative Design, Melanie Kahl Sep 2025

From Diamonds To Braids: New Metaphors For Teaching Transformative Design, Melanie Kahl

Learn X Design Conference Series

Drawing from my experience as a hybrid practitioner-educator, this pedagogical statement examines how we teach the invisible dimensions of transformative design. While traditional design process diagrams and metaphors—from squiggles to diamonds—effectively structure design activities, they fall short in teaching students how to facilitate transformative design processes. I propose braiding as a complementary cross-cultural metaphor that illuminates the concurrent processes woven through design work. I define four fundamental strands that expert practitioners weave into complex design processes: learning (growing capacity), narrative (weaving stories), relationships (growing connections and trust), and change (rehearsing transformation). This framework emerged from my practice of teaching students …

Learn X Design Conference Series

Núcleo Adela emerged in Chile in 2024 when a group of designers and educators gathered around a common concern: How can feminist design be practiced and taught in the Global South? This question, which challenged the current design state, marked the beginning of a collective project seeking to define itself and express its vision publicly. The process made us question how we wanted to build our identity, driving us to reflect deeply on who we are and how we represent ourselves. This sparked an exercise in co-designing identity, where poetry and openness became key tools in shaping a sensitive and …

Consortium, University, And Program Impact On Regional Economy And Community, Sean Creighton, Robert J. Sweeney, Katherine Cauley

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Community engagement in higher education has become increasingly widespread. As a consequence, universities find themselves learning how to integrate community engagement on their own, from each other, and, hopefully, from their community partners. This article discusses three distinct cases–a consortium, university, and program–and their impacts on a regional economy and community. In addition to illustrating intentional macro to micro community engagement practices, the article notes key findings from regional institutional collaborations. Further, the article recommends benchmarks for evaluating the quality and effective practice of community engagement.

Service-Learning Pathologies And Prognoses, Roy Schwartzman Sep 2025

Service-Learning Pathologies And Prognoses, Roy Schwartzman

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This essay diagnoses and suggests treatments for several pathologies that afflict service-learning. Structural challenges include geographic isolation and optimization of institutional administration. Student challenges include reinforcing stereotypes, deficiencies in practical skills, elitism regarding suitable service, underdeveloped empathy, and excessive focus on time spent in service. Community partner challenges include appropriately defining student labor and systematically under-reporting negative experiences. The prognosis explores how service-learning projects could instigate student engagement with the systemic nature of social injustice.
