The Perceptions And Receptiveness To Responsible Gambling By College Men Who Sports Bet: A Focus Group Study, Chance V. Dow, Matthew D. Andersland, Emily A. Velandia, Rory A. Pfund, James P. Whelan

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Responsible Gambling (RG) includes prevention messages aimed at mitigating harms. Research examining the experiences of college students who sports bet is lacking, hindering efforts to tailor messaging to college students. This qualitative study explored how college men who sports bet perceive and respond to existing RG messages, gathering their feedback on the characteristics of messages they find effective. Online focus groups were conducted with college men who sports bet (N = 12) using a semi-structured interview guide. The discussions were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using an open coding Thematic Analysis approach. Codes were independently identified and analyzed resulting in …

“Who All Gon Be There”: The Relationship Between Racial Identity, Perceived Social Distance, And Anxiety Among People Of African Descent, Veronica R. Mixon Sep 2025

“Who All Gon Be There”: The Relationship Between Racial Identity, Perceived Social Distance, And Anxiety Among People Of African Descent, Veronica R. Mixon

All ETDs from UAB

Mental health disparities among people of African descent are an important public health issue within the US. During COVID, between 2020 and 2021, anxiety symptoms among African American adults increased, which led to an overall increase in anxiety and depression rates (Vahratian et al., 2021; CDC, 2023). Despite this increase, only 39% of African Americans who experience mental health difficulties, receive treatment. The pandemic made it difficult for people to come together and there were heightened experiences of racial distress due to the events surrounding George Floyd. Prior research has shown that experiences of racism, isolation, and cultural disconnection have …

Effects Of Olfactory Enrichment On Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorders In Elderly Patients Undergoing Orthopedic Surgery: A Study Protocol Of A Multi-Center Randomized Controlled Trial, Xinchun Mei, Jiayi Wang, Zihan Ni, Yanyan Wang, Binglei Zhao, Daniel I Sessler, Zhongcong Xie, Yuan Shen

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Neurocognitive disorders are prevalent among older surgical patients, yet their underlying mechanisms and effective interventions remain largely unknown. Studies in rodents and patients suggest a connection between olfactory impairment and perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND). Previous work in mice demonstrates that anesthesia and surgery can lead to both olfactory impairment and cognitive deficits. Olfactory enrichment, which is also referred to as olfactory training (i.e., daily exposure to multiple odorants), may prove helpful. For example, olfactory enrichment appears to reduce PND-like behaviors in mice, possibly by mitigating anesthesia- and surgery-induced reductions in olfactory receptor neurons. Additionally, olfactory enrichment increases the volume …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Given the increasing demand for accessible mental health services, fully virtual telepsychiatry has become a vital component of modern health care delivery. Therapeutic alliance, the collaborative and affective bond between patients and therapists, is a well-established predictor of clinical outcomes in traditional face-to-face and teletherapy. However, the relationship between therapeutic alliance and clinical outcomes in an outpatient telepsychiatry setting remains less understood.

Objective: Our primary objective was to evaluate the relationship between therapeutic alliance and clinical outcomes for depression and anxiety in an outpatient telepsychiatry practice.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from treatment-seeking adults receiving services from Talkiatry, …

Aging In Mice Alters Regionally Enriched Striatal Astrocytes, Kay E Linker, Violeta Duran-Laforet, Matthias Ollivier, Xinzhu Yu, Dorothy P Schafer, Baljit S Khakh Sep 2025

Aging In Mice Alters Regionally Enriched Striatal Astrocytes, Kay E Linker, Violeta Duran-Laforet, Matthias Ollivier, Xinzhu Yu, Dorothy P Schafer, Baljit S Khakh

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Aging affects multiple organs and within the brain drives distinct molecular changes across different cell types. The striatum encodes motor behaviors that decline with age, but our understanding of how cells within the striatum change remains incomplete. Using single-cell RNA sequencing from young and aged mice we identify molecularly distinct astrocyte subtypes. We show that astrocytes change significantly with age, exhibiting downregulation of genes, reduced diversity, and a shift to more homogenous inflammatory transcriptomic profiles. By exploring where striatal astrocyte subtypes are located with single-cell resolution, we map astrocytes enriched in dorsal, medial, and ventral striatum. Age increases inflammatory marker …

Imaging-based spatial transcriptomics (ST) is evolving as a pivotal technology in studying tumor biology and associated microenvironments. However, the strengths of the commercially available ST platforms in studying spatial biology have not been systematically evaluated using rigorously controlled experiments. We use serial 5 μm sections of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded surgically resected lung adenocarcinoma and pleural mesothelioma samples in tissue microarrays to compare the performance of the ST platforms (CosMx, MERFISH, and Xenium (uni/multi-modal)) in reference to bulk RNA sequencing, multiplex immunofluorescence, GeoMx, and hematoxylin and eosin staining data. In addition to an objective assessment of automatic cell segmentation and phenotyping, we …

The Power Of The Mind: Managing Dental Phobia Through Hypnotherapy, Casper Jonker, Ness Avery, Jim Carey Sep 2025

The Power Of The Mind: Managing Dental Phobia Through Hypnotherapy, Casper Jonker, Ness Avery, Jim Carey

Peninsula Dental School

Treatment of dental disease is documented since ancient times. According to some sources, there is evidence that civilisations including the Egyptians, Greeks, and early Chinese were already practising dentistry. Teeth were extracted, primitive restorations placed and ways were even found to construct basic forms of dental prostheses.1 Interestingly, a team of experts determined that as far back as 9,000 years ago, people were able to remove ‘rotting' dental tissue and there is evidence of drilling on an area near an abscess. Since these early days of dentistry, it has evolved tremendously in all facets of the profession.

The Role Of Community Engaged Dental Education In Producing Socially Accountable Graduates In The Context Of The General Dental Council's Safe Practitioner Framework, Anastasios Plessas, Martha Paisi, Nilufar Ahmed, Zoe Brookes, Robert Witton

Peninsula Dental School

The General Dental Council's Safe Practitioner Framework sets out the required behaviours and learning outcomes for UK graduates across four domains, and social accountability is a new competency in the domain of professionalism. Community engagement is a type of community-based education, which has been advocated as a promising pedagogical approach to help institutions produce socially accountable graduates. It is conceptualised as a form of experiential education which uses community exposure educational programmes or activities (i.e., students are exposed to the population/community of interest usually in a non-clinical setting) to highlight and address community health care needs. Community engaged education can …

Spatiotemporal gene expression is the fundamental feature of cellular differentiation, including neuron differentiation. The epigenetic mechanism underlying spatiotemporal gene regulation during in vivo neuron differentiation remains largely unknown. Granule cells (GCs) constitute the vast majority of neurons in the cerebellum, which contains most of neurons in the brain. Here, we show that

Distinct Intrinsic And Extrinsic Factors Differentially Regulate Skeletal Stem Cells In Calvaria Versus Long Bones During Bone Regeneration, Jea Solidum, Kohei Yamasaki, Youngjae Jeong, Laura Ortinau, Francisco Heralde, Dongsu Park

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Calvarial suture skeletal stem cells (Su-SSCs) are a distinct stem cell population for craniofacial bone formation by intramembranous ossification, compared to long bone periosteal SSCs (LB-PSSCs) with endochondral (osteochondrogenic) ossification. However, whether SSC intrinsic or extrinsic factors affect their differentiation process has not been well elucidated. Here, using an inducible Prx1-CreER-EGFP+/−;Rosa26-tdTomato mouse model, we observed that endogenous Prx1+ Su-SSCs and their orthotopic transplantation into calvarial injury do not form cartilage intermediates at the injury sites, while the transplantation of Prx1+ LB-PSSCs into LB injury induces osteochondrogenic differentiation, respectively. However, the heterotopic transplantation of Prx1+ Su-SSCs (Su-SSCs …

The use of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) has substantially prolonged and improved the lives of patients with heart failure (HF). Nevertheless, adherence rates remain suboptimal. Even when successfully maximized and adhered to, there is a substantial residual risk of recurrent HF hospitalization and death. In light of this, there is a strong need for effective interventions that can decrease the high residual risk seen in patients with HF. Several device options exist that are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and that have been shown to decrease morbidity and/or mortality in patients among whom GDMT is maximized. These …

Background: Nicotine is known to influence metabolism and body weight, yet existing murine models of nicotine exposure often fail to replicate human smoking behaviors accurately. To address this gap, we designed a cost-effective, self-administered nicotine inhalation system that allows mice to voluntarily inhale nicotine vapor generated from e-liquid.

Results: Using this system, we investigated the metabolic effects of nicotine exposure in adult and adolescent mice. Adult mice exposed to nicotine vapor for 10 days exhibited significant weight loss, which was rapidly regained upon cessation, paralleling human smoking patterns. In contrast, adolescent mice did not lose weight during nicotine exposure but …

All Current Publications

In the western United States, decades of wildfire suppression and grazing have led to changes in the amount and type of wildland fuels. In many lower montane forests, fuels such as logs, dead trees, and fallen leaves have accumulated. In many sagebrush-dominated rangelands, annual grasses have invaded, and pinyon pine and juniper woodlands have encroached. These areas now threaten to burn at uncharacteristically high fire severity, a metric based on how much vegetation is killed. Climate change and rapid population growth have exacerbated this issue in Utah, increasing the threat wildfire poses to the state’s communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems. Fuel …

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Esophagojejunal Anastomosis For Delayed Reconstruction: A Case Series On The Novel Technique And Our Experience, Abby Kunitsky, Steve R. Siegal, Mark Bloomston, Bassan Allan, Augustine Salami

Student Publications

Esophagojejunal (EJ) anastomoses are integral to gastrointestinal reconstructive surgeries following procedures such as gastrectomy, particularly in cases of cancer or Roux-en-Y reconstruction. However, the traditional surgical EJ anastomosis approach can pose challenges with notable risks such as anastomotic leakage, stricture, or fistula formation. Endoscopic interventions have been employed for managing these adverse outcomes through stent placement, but a primarily endoscopic EJ anastomosis technique has not yet been described. This retrospective case series details five patients who underwent delayed endoscopic EJ anastomosis, with each patient under differing circumstances of instability necessitating this emergent alternative to standard surgical reconstruction. This approach involved …

The Emerging Role Of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine In Enhancing Quality Of Life For Palliative And End-Of-Life Patients: A Narrative Review, Ambrose Loc T. Ngo, Linda Nguyen, Cynthia Shahbandeh, Jared W. Nichols

Student Publications

Palliative and end-of-life care aim to minimize suffering and optimize the quality of life for individuals nearing the end of their lives. Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) represents a potentially valuable nonpharmacological approach within this integrative care framework. Emerging evidence from clinical observations, small-scale studies, and foundational osteopathic principles suggests that OMM may help support patient comfort, alleviate certain symptoms, and contribute to dignity in care. Techniques such as myofascial release, cranial manipulation, and lymphatic drainage have been reported to improve comfort and emotional well-being; however, these findings are based primarily on limited and heterogeneous studies. This narrative review synthesizes current …

The Effect Of Mesoscale Frontal Waves On Landfalling Atmospheric Rivers And Their Associated Precipitation Over The Green River Watershed, Washington, Joseph Michael Riedl

Dissertations and Theses

In this study, the effect of mesoscale frontal waves (MFWs) on extreme precipitation (EP) in the Upper Green River Watershed (UGRW), Washington is investigated. 205 EP days (>95th percentile) are identified in the UGRW between the years 1980 and 2021. To characterize the range of large-scale meteorological conditions associated with EP days, the self-organizing map (SOM) approach is used to cluster daily integrated water vapor transport (IVT) on EP days. To further diagnose the meteorological drivers, composites of several other diagnostic fields are constructed for each SOM node and the preceding days. Together, these results illustrate common orientations of …

An Innovative And Equitable Approach For Global Learning: Internationalization At Home, Unni Jenssen, Tracy Taylor, Sara Edwards, Jeanie M. Bochenek

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

In an era of increasing global connectivity and cultural diversity, fostering cultural competence among students is paramount. It is a prevailing notion that cultural competence is primarily achieved through international mobility. However, the reality is that most students are unable to travel abroad due to economic limitations, family obligations and work commitments. With these limitations of international mobility, innovative strategies to enhance cultural competence “at home” were developed by Lovisenberg Diaconal University College (LDUC) in Norway and Ohio State University College of Nursing in Ohio. Grounded in Campinha-Bacote’s model of cultural competence, these strategies include a) systematic integration of domestic …
