Quality Improvement Project Improving Fall Risk Protocol Compliance Through A Structured Fall Prevention Program In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Lakeesha Jenkins Sep 2025

Quality Improvement Project Improving Fall Risk Protocol Compliance Through A Structured Fall Prevention Program In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Lakeesha Jenkins

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Falls remain a persistent patient-safety threat in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). At a Dallas–Fort Worth SNF, a needs assessment identified rising unassisted falls and inconsistent protocol adherence. This quality improvement (QI) project examined whether a structured, evidence-based bundle could improve staff knowledge and fall-prevention processes and reduce falls over four weeks. Guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and implemented with Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) cycles, the pre–post design engaged direct-care staff (registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, certified nursing assistants; n = 20). The intervention included standardized risk screening with the Morse Fall Scale (MFS), targeted staff education, high-risk visual identifiers, and post-fall huddles. …

Bridging Research And Practice: Advancing Pracademic And Applied Research In The Social Sector, Emma Indart, Emilyn Watkins

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

For many nonprofits around the world, accessing relevant research, data, and strategies to drive change can be a barrier to success. This gap between nonprofit practitioners and researchers is compounded by the high cost of academic articles, the limited availability of non-English publications, and the lack of practical tools to translate research into actionable strategies.

This paper examines the intersection of research for practice, applied research, and “pracademic” scholarship, highlighting how these approaches can expand the capacity of nonprofit professionals to create meaningful change in their communities. Furthermore, bridging the divide between research and practice has the potential to help …

The Inaccessibility Of Nonprofit Organizations Data In Sub-Saharan Africa, Barnabas Suva, Robert Bhero Sep 2025

The Inaccessibility Of Nonprofit Organizations Data In Sub-Saharan Africa, Barnabas Suva, Robert Bhero

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

This article presents initial findings from a research study on nonprofit data across countries, focusing on the accessibility of nonprofit organizations in 49 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, following thorough research of accessibility data from nonprofit organizations, regulatory bodies, and nonprofit websites. Only 12% of countries maintain a functional public nonprofit organization database, and even fewer provide detailed, searchable registries. While 94% of countries legally grant nonprofit organizations tax exemption, mandatory reporting obligations are often not paired with public access, thereby weakening accountability. These findings situate data inaccessibility as an agency problem where principals (donors, policymakers, communities) lack sufficient information to …

Quality Improvement Project Addressing Healthcare Provider Adherence To Diabetic Foot Exams In A Primary Care Clinic, Olaide Akinyinka

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Healthcare providers performing foot examinations are a crucial component in assisting Type II diabetic patients to maintain their health. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine how the providers' implementation of Inlow’s 60-second Diabetic Foot screen, compared to current practice standards, impacts the number of foot exams among Type II diabetic patients at a primary care clinic over 12 weeks. Therefore, it was unknown if or to what degree the provider implementing Inlow’s 60-second Diabetic Foot Screen impacts the number of foot exams conducted compared to the current practice among Type II diabetic patients. Understanding Covid-19 Message Fatigue And Reactance In A Post-Crisis Context, Lillian Hamilton Mantel Sep 2025

Understanding Covid-19 Message Fatigue And Reactance In A Post-Crisis Context, Lillian Hamilton Mantel

Dissertations and Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted widespread public health messaging encouraging behaviors such as vaccination, mask-wearing, and staying home when sick. However, persistent exposure to these messages has sometimes produced unintended effects, including message fatigue and psychological reactance. Drawing on psychological reactance theory (PRT) and the integrative model of behavioral prediction (IMBP), this study examines the relationships between message fatigue, psychological reactance, and behavioral intentions toward three COVID-19 preventive behaviors: vaccination, masking, and staying home when sick. A survey of 348 U.S. adults assessed participants' levels of message fatigue, psychological reactance, attitudes, perceived norms, self-efficacy, response efficacy, collective efficacy, and behavioral intentions. …

Addressing Graduation Disparities: Double-Dose Algebra As A Catalyst For Success Among Economically Disadvantaged Learners, Tracy Matozzo Sep 2025

Addressing Graduation Disparities: Double-Dose Algebra As A Catalyst For Success Among Economically Disadvantaged Learners, Tracy Matozzo

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the impact of a double-dose algebra intervention (DDAI) on the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged learners (EDLs) in a suburban New Jersey high school. Algebra, recognized as a gatekeeper course for graduation and postsecondary opportunities, was the focal point for targeted instructional reform. Using a quasi-experimental design, outcomes for EDLs enrolled in the DDAI were compared with peers in traditional algebra classes across three cohorts. Findings showed that EDLs in the treatment group achieved higher passing rates in Algebra I and demonstrated stronger attendance patterns than the control groups, though standardized test score improvements were modest. Survey …

In-scanner head motion introduces systematic bias to resting-state fMRI functional connectivity (FC) not completely removed by denoising algorithms. Researchers studying traits associated with motion (e.g. psychiatric disorders) need to know if their trait-FC relationships are impacted by residual motion to avoid reporting false positive results. We devised Split Half Analysis of Motion Associated Networks (SHAMAN) to assign a motion impact score to specific trait-FC relationships. SHAMAN distinguishes between motion causing overestimation or underestimation of trait-FC effects. We assessed 45 traits from n = 7270 participants in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. After standard denoising with ABCD-BIDS and without …

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is among the most common neurogenetic disorders and is associated with an increased risk of developing tumors in the nervous system. Additionally, up to 80% of patients with NF1 experience neurological complications, including deficits in attention, memory, and executive function. Significant effort has been dedicated to studying how NF1 mutations autonomously dysregulate neuronal function. Increasing evidence indicates that NF1 mutations also dysregulate the oligodendroglial lineage that contributes to neurological issues in NF1. Here, we summarize our current understanding of how NF1 mutations impact the oligodendroglial lineage homeostasis and plasticity. We also discuss gaps in knowledge, potential …

Recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is an aggressive malignancy with a significant unmet need for enhancing immunotherapy response given current modest efficacy. Here, we perform an in vivo CRISPR screen in an HNSCC mouse model to identify immune evasion genes. We identify several regulators of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) response, including the ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase 5 (UCHL5). Loss of Uchl5 in tumors increases CD8

Life Course And Cohort Patterns In Screen Time Among School-Aged Children In The United States, Ashley W. Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Objective

To assess the independent effects of lifecycle (age), historical (period), and generational (cohort) differences that influence the trends in extreme (>3 hours/day) screen time (TV watching plus computer use) among school-aged children in the United States.

Study design

We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and hierarchical age–period–cohort statistical techniques to decompose, describe, and explain the population-level, secular patterns in extreme daily screen viewing time among 5 to 15-year-olds between 1999 and 2018.

Results

We found that 58% of school-aged children engaged in extreme daily screen time. The probability of extreme screen time is …
