Bride Abduction In Rural Ethiopia: A Multilevel Analysis Of Influences, Impact, And Intervention Strategies, Sydney Dragovich Oct 2025

Bride Abduction In Rural Ethiopia: A Multilevel Analysis Of Influences, Impact, And Intervention Strategies, Sydney Dragovich

Global Studies Senior Capstone

Bride abduction in rural Ethiopia is a harmful traditional practice that often goes unchallenged by both communities and law enforcement. This paper provides a multilevel analysis of legal frameworks, cultural influences, and socioeconomic factors sustaining the practice, and discusses the far-reaching impact on affected individuals and communities. Examining interventions that have successfully addressed gender-based violence in other contexts suggests that multicomponent community mobilization, improved procedural frameworks, and engagement with local leaders are essential to effectively addressing bride abduction in rural Ethiopia.

The Catholic Church And Their Response To The Rise Of Human Rights Abuses By The Military Regimes In Argentina And Brazil: A Comparative Analysis On The Argentine And Brazilian Church From The 1960’S To The 1980’S, Mya Miller Oct 2025

The Catholic Church And Their Response To The Rise Of Human Rights Abuses By The Military Regimes In Argentina And Brazil: A Comparative Analysis On The Argentine And Brazilian Church From The 1960’S To The 1980’S, Mya Miller

Global Studies Senior Capstone

This study is primarily focused on the Catholic Church's role in Argentina and Brazil throughout the 1960's to 1980's. It explores the historical and political context of Latin America amidst Cold War influence which resulted in the rise of military dictatorships who resorted to violence due to their strong political views. The Catholic Church, at the time, was experiencing deep internal tension which, in some cases, lead to an unfortunate lack of action despite their vast influence and their ability to aid their communities in need.

Pressure Ulcer Prevention, Yamilette Andrade, Gallagher Garcia, Julia Jardon, Alexis Korkowski, Raquel Meza, Saimir Pahumi Oct 2025

Pressure Ulcer Prevention, Yamilette Andrade, Gallagher Garcia, Julia Jardon, Alexis Korkowski, Raquel Meza, Saimir Pahumi

NURSI 2330 Role of the Nurse II

Pressure injuries remain a major nursing-sensitive indicator of care quality and safety, affecting up to 15% of hospitalized adults and contributing to billions in preventable healthcare costs annually. These injuries are largely avoidable through evidence-based prevention strategies guided by nursing practice. This literature review synthesized current research on pressure injury prevention, emphasizing recent large-scale and systematic reviews. Implementation of structured prevention programs and care bundles—including regular repositioning, risk assessment using the Braden Scale, moisture and nutrition management, and specialized support surfaces—significantly reduces hospital-acquired pressure injuries. However, studies reveal ongoing gaps in nurses’ knowledge and inconsistent adherence to protocols. Evidence from …

Fall Prevention, Alex Moy, Marilu Moreno, Sam David, Matthew Dyteves, Ashton Baula, Armando Cando

NURSI 2330 Role of the Nurse II

Falls are the most common injury to take place in a healthcare setting and the leading cause of injury-related morbidity and mortality in older adults.  Falls lead to a patient’s loss of independence and prolonged hospitalization. Four peer-reviewed nursing research articles published between 2022 and 2025 were reviewed, focusing on staff and patient education, structured rounding, tailored patient teaching, and use of fall risk assessment tools. The literature review revealed that the use of interventional methods and assessment tools increase awareness and understanding for falls, leading to better safety and improved patient outcomes across care settings.

Save The Bees And The Land: A Framework To Connect The Wildfires In Portugal To The Change In Bee Populations, Lacy Creswell Oct 2025

Save The Bees And The Land: A Framework To Connect The Wildfires In Portugal To The Change In Bee Populations, Lacy Creswell

Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice

Wildfire is an ecological process that is important to ecosystems around the world. Fire is naturally occurring and is also used as a forest management technique to promote biodiversity. While previous studies have analyzed how wildfires affect insects, none of the studies have been based in Portugal about native bees or insects. Additionally, previous studies have addressed the impact wildfire has on land and forests; however, the gap in knowledge is how wildfire directly influences native bee species’ populations. This study assesses how wildfires in Portugal impact the native bee populations and how the lack of pollen and nectar post-fire, …

Embedded Aid And Organizational Vulnerability: Usaid’S Withdrawal And Moroccan Civil Society, Elsie Prince Oct 2025

Embedded Aid And Organizational Vulnerability: Usaid’S Withdrawal And Moroccan Civil Society, Elsie Prince

Morocco: Human Rights, Social Justice, and Cultural Transformation

This study examines the consequences of the United States’ 2025 dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USIAD) and its effects on Moroccan nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). While debates within the United States increasingly frame foreign aid as wasteful or misaligned with domestic priorities, USAID has historically served as a core instrument of U.S. geopolitical strategy and a central source of financial, technical, and institutional support for local civil society abroad. The research investigates how long-term donor-recipient relationships shape organizational vulnerability and resilience when a dominant donor abruptly withdraws. Based on qualitative fieldwork conducted in Morocco in 2025, the study …

Structural Determinants Of Pay-For-Performance: Cross-System Analyses And Implications For Switzerland's Bismarckian Model, Joyce Zhang Oct 2025

Structural Determinants Of Pay-For-Performance: Cross-System Analyses And Implications For Switzerland's Bismarckian Model, Joyce Zhang

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Rising healthcare costs in Switzerland—driven in part by incentives that reward service volume over value—have sparked interest in alternative payment models such as Pay-for-Performance (P4P). Yet Switzerland remains in the early stages of experimenting with P4P, making this a timely moment to examine how the country’s health system structure shapes the design, implementation, and feasibility of such reforms. This study investigates two gaps in the existing literature: the largely unexamined role of health system typology in conditioning P4P outcomes, and the limited understanding of how Switzerland’s Bismarckian model influences P4P adoption. Using a mixed-methods qualitative design, the study combines a …

Access In Context: A Comparative Study Of Refugee And Asylum-Seeking Child Immunization In Uganda’S National System And Chad’S Humanitarian System, Maya Lunt Oct 2025

Access In Context: A Comparative Study Of Refugee And Asylum-Seeking Child Immunization In Uganda’S National System And Chad’S Humanitarian System, Maya Lunt

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Vaccinations and child immunizations are widely recognized as a safe and effective public health tool to stop preventable deaths of children and eliminate disease. Refugees and asylum-seeking children are often more vulnerable and have a greater risk of having incomplete immunization. This is due to a wide variety of barriers that refugees can face, which can be unique to different health system designs or country policies. Chad and Uganda are two lower-middle-income countries that have different refugee health system designs. Chad has a health system design where a parallel system is run for refugees, which heavily involves humanitarian aid from …

Beyond The Needle: Microarray Patches And The Pursuit Of Measles Vaccination Equity In Sub-Saharan Africa, Paige Littlefield Oct 2025

Beyond The Needle: Microarray Patches And The Pursuit Of Measles Vaccination Equity In Sub-Saharan Africa, Paige Littlefield

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Persistent inequities in measles vaccination systems across Sub-Saharan Africa leave millions unreached by both routine services and outbreak campaigns. Microarray patches for measles-rubella vaccination (MR-MAPs) are widely promoted as a solution to logistical and workforce barriers, yet little empirical work examines how their benefits align with real operational constraints. This study analyzes the potential role of MR-MAPs in advancing immunization equity through expert interviews and targeted document analysis. Findings reveal a tension between the technological promise of MR-MAPs and the structural limitations of current health systems. While thermostability, simplified application, and task-shifting opportunities could expand reach among zero-dose, mobile, and …

Competition And Soil Microbe-Mediated Interactions Following Dieback Of A Dominant Wetland Plant, Joseph Johnston, Aaron E. Devries, Rodrigo Diaz, Vinson P. Doyle, Tracy Elsey-Quirk, James T. Cronin Oct 2025

Competition And Soil Microbe-Mediated Interactions Following Dieback Of A Dominant Wetland Plant, Joseph Johnston, Aaron E. Devries, Rodrigo Diaz, Vinson P. Doyle, Tracy Elsey-Quirk, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

Plant invasions can have important consequences for the soil ecosystem which, in turn, can affect interactions with other plant species and impose serious constraints on restoration efforts. In the Mississippi River Delta (MRD), USA, widespread dieback of the dominant wetland plant, Phragmites australis, was followed by the colonization of invasive Colocasia esculenta (taro) in many areas. We conducted a common-garden experiment to investigate the competitive interactions among taro and two P. australis lineages prevalent in the MRD, Delta and European invasive (EU), and the role of taro-soil microbes in mediating those interactions. Plant types were grown alone or together and …

Exploring The Role Of Transformational Leadership In The Health And Growth Of Nazarene Churches In The Africa East Field, Warren W. Rogers Iii Oct 2025

Exploring The Role Of Transformational Leadership In The Health And Growth Of Nazarene Churches In The Africa East Field, Warren W. Rogers Iii

PhD in Organizational Leadership

The transformational leadership model is associated with positive outcomes in the follower experience, as well as in educational, healthcare, and business sectors. There is limited research on the impact of transformational leadership on church health and growth (George & Sreedharan, 2023; Kouni et al., 2018; Rahmatulloh et al., 2023; Tian & Guo, 2024). The purpose of this general qualitative study was to explore how transformational leadership contributes to the health and growth of Nazarene churches in the Africa East Field (comprising Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda). Eight pastoral leaders were interviewed to share their thoughts, perspectives, …

An Exploration Of How Internally Driven Faith Leaders Attribute Outcomes: A Qualitative Case Study., Evelyn Cardenas Oct 2025

An Exploration Of How Internally Driven Faith Leaders Attribute Outcomes: A Qualitative Case Study., Evelyn Cardenas

PhD in Organizational Leadership

Control is a key factor for understanding behavior, decision-making, and leadership. Whereas locus of control (LOC) explores a person’s belief about how much influence they have over their life (Rotter, 1966), God control explores how much influence a person believes God has over their life (Welton et al., 1996). In the context of faith leaders, the topic of control is nuanced, as two entities cannot be in control simultaneously (Slatinsky et al., 2022). There is ample research on LOC, sense of control, and leadership. There is also extensive research on faith leaders. However, research exploring internally driven individuals and faith …

Content Analysis Of K-12 Behavioral Threat Assessment And Management (Btam) Guides: Implementing Responses To Exogenous Shocks, Sarah Schappert Oct 2025

Content Analysis Of K-12 Behavioral Threat Assessment And Management (Btam) Guides: Implementing Responses To Exogenous Shocks, Sarah Schappert

Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations

What information about teams, case management, reporting, information sharing, and training guidance are included in publicly available K-12 Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) guides? How does this information differ between K-12 BTAM guides created proactively versus those created reactively in response to an exogenous shock? In this thesis, I explore these questions by analyzing 30 publicly available K-12 BTAM guides. This study contributes to the sparse criminal justice literature on the use of BTAM guides, notably increasing the literature on BTAM responses to exogenous shocks. Findings indicate that although general information is usually included, specific details are often lacking. …

Holding The Line: Maryland's Federal Accountability Unit And The Fight Against Unlawful Federal Actions, Mehek Singh Oct 2025

Holding The Line: Maryland's Federal Accountability Unit And The Fight Against Unlawful Federal Actions, Mehek Singh

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

Introduction

In an era marked by sharp divisions between the states and the federal government, the Maryland Office of the Attorney General (OAG), with the support of the Maryland General Assembly and the Governor, created an essential mechanism for protecting Maryland's laws, funding, and programs: the Federal Accountability Unit (FAU). Established in the wake of escalating federal actions that threaten Maryland's legal and policy interests as well as the civil rights of Marylanders, particularly since the beginning of the Trump administration's second term, the FAU stands as a coordinated, impact-driven legal force. Its mission is straightforward: to monitor, challenge, and …

From Deforestation To Regeneration: Modeling The Potential Of Chakra Agroforestry To Restore Edaphic Invertebrates And Soil Health In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Annika Vikstrom Oct 2025

From Deforestation To Regeneration: Modeling The Potential Of Chakra Agroforestry To Restore Edaphic Invertebrates And Soil Health In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Annika Vikstrom

Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation

Tropical edaphic invertebrates lie at the intersection of three historically understudied domains: tropical habitats, soil ecosystems, and terrestrial invertebrate biodiversity (Boyle et al. 2024; Lugo et al., 2024). Approximately 80% of tropical invertebrates remain undescribed, leaving major gaps in the understanding of how land-use change and climate change may affect their diversity and ecological function. The Amazon Basin, one of the world’s most biologically and culturally diverse regions, is increasingly threatened by land use change and deforestation. While agriculture is the second main driver of forest conversion in the basin, Indigenous Agroforestry systems such as Kichwa Chakras in the Ecuadorian …

Size Matters: Linkage Between Bromeliad Traits And The Spider Communities They Host In A Disturbed Habitat, Alesandra Fairchild Oct 2025

Size Matters: Linkage Between Bromeliad Traits And The Spider Communities They Host In A Disturbed Habitat, Alesandra Fairchild

Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation

Bromeliads are a plant group that have been praised for their ability to create unique microhabitats, hosting an abundant and diverse faunal community due to their unique structural characteristics. Unfortunately, as deforestation rates rise, this plant group is at risk of decreasing in both abundance and diversity, which puts their associated organisms at risk of losing essential habitat (e.g. spiders). In this study, the effect of bromeliad structural characteristics and forest disturbance was assessed in a mature and secondary forest by classifying bromeliad abundance by forest type, characterizing forest structure, and by analyzing spider abundance and diversity based on these …

The Price Of Gold: Macroinvertebrate Responses To Mining In The Upper Jatunyacu River, Clara Chae Oct 2025

The Price Of Gold: Macroinvertebrate Responses To Mining In The Upper Jatunyacu River, Clara Chae

Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation

Gold mining is rapidly expanding in the upper Jatunyacu River basin of the Ecuadorian Amazon, an ecologically and culturally important region where Indigenous Kichwa communities depend on streams for drinking water, agriculture, and fisheries. This study assessed the ecological condition of five tributary streams across a variety of land uses: primary forest, chakra agroforestry, a stream recovering from historical mining, and a stream downstream of active small-scale gold mining. Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected and identified to morphospecies, and hydromorphological parameters, biodiversity indices, beta diversity metrics, and two biotic indices (AAMBI and BMWP/Col) were used to evaluate ecological integrity. Results showed …

Statutory Copy-Pasting In The Law Of Sovereign Immunity, Chimène I. Keitner Oct 2025

Statutory Copy-Pasting In The Law Of Sovereign Immunity, Chimène I. Keitner

William & Mary Law Review

Congress sometimes copy-pastes language from one statute into another statute. While this can serve the goals of consistency and efficiency, copy-pasting can cause problems when done across disparate legal regimes, such as different sovereign immunity doctrines. When Congress enacted the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA) of 1976, it borrowed language from the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) of 1946 that exempts the exercise of “discretionary functions” from tort jurisdiction. Both statutes allow private damages claims against governmental entities in defined circumstances. Despite this superficial similarity, the statutes were enacted in very different contexts and serve fundamentally different purposes. Nonetheless, courts …

The Rise Of E-Patients In Tanzania: Reflections On The Unregulated Growth Of Digital Health Consultations, Kahabi Isangula Oct 2025

The Rise Of E-Patients In Tanzania: Reflections On The Unregulated Growth Of Digital Health Consultations, Kahabi Isangula

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: Digital technologies have significantly transformed healthcare delivery globally, enabling patients to access healthcare services through electronic and mobile platforms. In Tanzania, this transformation has manifested in the rise of “e-patients” — individuals who actively seek health advice, consultation, or treatment through unregulated digital platforms. This paper examines the drivers, patterns, and implications of this trend in Tanzania.

Methods: A descriptive approach was employed, synthesising peer-reviewed and grey literature from global and sub-Saharan African sources, with a particular focus on Tanzania. Insights were also drawn from expert discussions, public digital platforms, and the author’s experiential reflections to contextualize …

Planning Ahead: A Holistic Approach To End-Of-Life Planning, Kristin Litzelman, Ashley Berghoff, Jennifer Abel, Carol Bralich, Jackie Carattini, Selena Freimark, Jenna Kink, Sara Richie Oct 2025

Planning Ahead: A Holistic Approach To End-Of-Life Planning, Kristin Litzelman, Ashley Berghoff, Jennifer Abel, Carol Bralich, Jackie Carattini, Selena Freimark, Jenna Kink, Sara Richie

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

End-of-life planning can be an intimidating, confusing, and emotional process, which may explain why only 37% of Americans have completed advance care directives. To address this need, we developed the Planning AHEAD (Advance directives, Handling financial changes, Estate planning, and Arriving at Decisions for the end of this life) curriculum. Planning AHEAD is a seven-session course designed to help participants make important decisions that reflect their end-of-life wishes and document this information to relieve stress for their loved ones. In the first two years of the program, Extension educators facilitated 45 Planning AHEAD series across Wisconsin, reaching over 600 participants. …
