Empowering Parenting & Bonding For Women With Young Children In A Transition Home, Payge Side, Mary Jan Greer Phd, Otr Oct 2025

Empowering Parenting & Bonding For Women With Young Children In A Transition Home, Payge Side, Mary Jan Greer Phd, Otr

Fall 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

This capstone project was completed at Star of Hope, a transitional housing facility for women and children. A needs assessment revealed that mothers struggled with routine consistency, emotional regulation, and parent–child bonding due to environmental demands. In response, a customized parenting guidebook was developed using occupational therapy principles to provide structure, bonding activities, and self-reflection strategies. Mothers who engaged with the guidebook reported improvements in organization, confidence, and interactions with their children. Sustainability was supported by leaving the guidebook with the facility and training staff for continued use. The project highlights the impact of simple, structured OT interventions in …

Sports Evangelism On Wheels: An Evaluation Of The Efficacy And Development Of Athletic Evangelism, Keira B. Martin Oct 2025

Sports Evangelism On Wheels: An Evaluation Of The Efficacy And Development Of Athletic Evangelism, Keira B. Martin

History Senior Capstone

This thesis includes how sports evangelism operates and develops conceptually, evaluating the program Wandering Wheels as a qualitative case study. Wandering Wheels was a cycling program that began in Upland, IN in 1964 to illustrate the toughness of the Christian life. Drawing on oral histories, archival records, and documentary material, it argues that community, activism, athletic maturation, and personal spiritual growth were pivotal to Wandering Wheels' model. This evaluation demonstrates the extent to which this program exemplified the concept of sports evangelism.

Anti-Union Regulation And The Opioid Crisis, Kelly Chen, Samia Islam Oct 2025

Anti-Union Regulation And The Opioid Crisis, Kelly Chen, Samia Islam

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Existing literature provides ample evidence of the detrimental impact of de-unionization on various determinants of individual health. However, there is a lack of direct empirical research linking de-unionization to objective health outcomes. By leveraging the differential timing of Right-to-Work law implementation across four states in the United States, we quantify the role of union presence in opioid misuse. Using a synthetic control method, our analysis reveals a persistent decline in unionization rates in the affected states within 4-6 years of RTW enactment. This reduction precipitated a considerable increase in both nonfatal and fatal overdoses, as measured by opioid-related treatment admissions …

Rule Or Reason? The Role Of Balancing In Antitrust Law, Michael A. Carrier, Mark A. Lemley Oct 2025

Rule Or Reason? The Role Of Balancing In Antitrust Law, Michael A. Carrier, Mark A. Lemley

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

In this Essay, we argue that the proper test for antitrust’s rule of reason is a four-step, burden-shifting framework that ends with a balancing of the likely harms and benefits of particular conduct. One reason balancing has become rare even in circuits that permit it is that it seems hard. Antitrust is shot through with economic theory and evidence, and courts aren’t experts in economics. So they tend to look for shortcuts that allow them to resolve the case without having to apply that economic evidence to assess the likely net effect of a defendant’s conduct. But those shortcuts themselves …

Uniformity, Loper Bright, And The National Labor Relations Board: Can The Board’S Nonacquiescence Policy Survive In A Post-Chevron World?, Alexander Macdonald Oct 2025

Uniformity, Loper Bright, And The National Labor Relations Board: Can The Board’S Nonacquiescence Policy Survive In A Post-Chevron World?, Alexander Macdonald

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

As chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, Donald Dotson was nothing if not controversial. Though he headed the Board for five years, he was never shy about criticizing the Board’s practices. He often argued that the Board had skewed its policies toward organized labor and inserted itself in disputes best left to private negotiation. That criticism put him at odds with his fellow Board members and frequently landed him on the wrong side of divided opinions. Even members who shared his core philosophy sometimes shied away from joining his assaults on the Board itself.

So it was on September …

The Best We Can Hope For: The Irony Of The Best Interest Standard, Alesondra Cruz Oct 2025

The Best We Can Hope For: The Irony Of The Best Interest Standard, Alesondra Cruz

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

Laws are often designed with an eye toward precision. Specific words are chosen, others deliberately removed, with each revision seeking to bring a rule closer to its intended purpose. Despite this deliberate process, even the most curated laws at times fail to serve their intended ends, and instead become sources of harm. This reality, unfortunate and unavoidable, is the irony of law.

This tension is particularly evident in the context of family law, where negative ramifications are felt personally and intimately, and in child custody cases, where the stakes are incredibly high. The best interest of the child standard was …

Utahns’ Perceptions Of Risk Related To Poor Air Quality Differ By Demographics & Location, Bailey Hughlett, Sydney O'Shay, Cris Meier Oct 2025

Utahns’ Perceptions Of Risk Related To Poor Air Quality Differ By Demographics & Location, Bailey Hughlett, Sydney O'Shay, Cris Meier

Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)

Air pollution poses a significant threat to Utahns’ health, shortening Utahns’ life expectancy by two years (1). Air pollution can cause and worsen many illnesses and conditions (1). Individuals’ perceptions of how susceptible they are to health risks related to air pollution and how severe these risks are for them vary across demographic characteristics. This study investigated demographic differences in Utahns’ perceptions of health risks related to air pollution in the state. Specifically, we examined differences in how Utahns perceive risk based on their political identity, gender, education level, geographic location, and disability status. Understanding how people perceive risk across …

The Impact Of Long-Term Exposure To Lip Cosmetics On The Fertility Of Female Drosophila Melanogaster, Neeka Oghli Oct 2025

The Impact Of Long-Term Exposure To Lip Cosmetics On The Fertility Of Female Drosophila Melanogaster, Neeka Oghli

Holster Scholar Projects

Are products marketed as safe to use, truly safe to use? Inspired by an article exposing the dangers of Tampax tampons, this study examines potential reproductive risks from consumer lip products marketed as natural and safe18. Drosophila melanogaster, a model organism with genetic and reproductive similarities to humans, was utilized to test the impacts of Rhode and Avène lip cosmetics. Avène’s Cicalfate + Lips Repair Lip Balm is the closest alternative to Rhode’s unscented peptide lip treatment, which was mindfully chosen to test if affordability comes at the expense of safety. Various concentrations of these products will be exposed to …

How Attention Related Brainwaves Vary With Performance On Speech-In-Noise Tasks, Akshat Viswanath Oct 2025

How Attention Related Brainwaves Vary With Performance On Speech-In-Noise Tasks, Akshat Viswanath

Holster Scholar Projects

Prior studies have found alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (15-30 Hz) oscillations measured with EEG both increase in power when people are performing speech-in-noise tasks. In theory, variation in speech-in-noise performance could reflect the ability to segregate and neurally encode background versus foreground sounds. Here, we aim to examine how alpha and beta oscillations play a role in ignoring background sounds versus attending to foreground speech sounds. We had thirty-four healthy young adults perform a speech-in-noise task while we recorded brain signals using 64-channel EEG. Subjects were instructed to ignore the randomly varied background “noise” sounds that onset at the …

Identifying And Addressing Barriers To Long Term Follow Up Care Of Patients With Hepatitis C In A Rural Southern Appalachian Clinic, Sarah M. Brown Oct 2025

Identifying And Addressing Barriers To Long Term Follow Up Care Of Patients With Hepatitis C In A Rural Southern Appalachian Clinic, Sarah M. Brown

Doctoral Projects

This project addressed the issue of loss to follow-up (LTFU) among patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), a significant barrier to achieving sustained virologic response (SVR) and improving outcomes. LTFU is particularly critical among marginalized and rural populations who face socioeconomic barriers, stigma, and other social determinants of health (SDOH) that affect treatment adherence. Grounded in the Social Ecological Model (SEM), this project examined systemic, community, interpersonal, and individual factors influencing LTFU (Ahmed et al., 2022; Al-Khazraji et al., 2019; Kilanowski, 2017).

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement initiative sought to improve patient retention in HCV care …

“The Adventures of Pip! The Culex pipiens” is an educational comic book series designed to engage a younger audience (4th grade – 5th grade) while introducing them to key topics related to mosquitoes. Although mosquitoes are often viewed solely as a nuisance, they are also fascinating creatures. A better understanding of their life cycle and behavior can improve our ability to manage them effectively. Early education on these topics can raise long-term awareness and behaviors that continue into adulthood. This comic book series offers an accessible and enjoyable format for a science lesson and can be effectively integrated into a …

Inclusive Education And Autism Spectrum Disorder: Preparing University Students To Support Secondary Learners, Kristen M. Lucke, Cynthia Haynes Oct 2025

Inclusive Education And Autism Spectrum Disorder: Preparing University Students To Support Secondary Learners, Kristen M. Lucke, Cynthia Haynes

Fall 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 1 in 31 children in the United States, highlighting the need for future teachers and occupational therapists (OTs) to support students with ASD in inclusive educational settings. This mixed-methods capstone examined how an OT-informed professional learning session influenced university students’ knowledge, confidence, and readiness to support learners with ASD. Fifteen graduate students participated in a 75-minute instructional session addressing six ASD learning domains. Pre- and post-session measures included demographic information, the investigator-developed Knowledge and Perceptions of Autism Spectrum Disorder (KPASD) assessment, Likert-scale ratings, and qualitative reflections. Participants demonstrated significant increases in total KPASD scores …

A Guidebook For Occupational Therapy Practitioners To Promote Adaptive Sports, Ivy M. Shimkus, Heather Rennerfeldt, Angela Blackwell

Fall 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

Adaptive sports offer meaningful physical, social, and emotional benefits for adolescents with disabilities; however, many occupational therapy (OT) practitioners report limited training and resources to support these activities within practice. This capstone project aimed to address this gap by developing Sports for All, an educational guidebook designed to help OT practitioners promote engagement in adaptive sports among adolescents with disabilities. Guided by the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement and the PERMA well-being framework, the project emphasized the importance of person, environment, occupation, and positive psychological factors that support meaningful engagement in activities that promote overall well-being in …

A shared interest in a month-long novel writing event inspired two reference and instruction librarians to develop a serialized program built around writing and research. Through leveraging resources and partnerships, the librarians planned to foster creativity and confidence in research writing skills within an ethos of community. This project relied on multiple forms of outreach and assessment with an intention that would be meaningful and valuable to the students. The goal from the beginning was to develop an event that incorporated the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, fit the library’s mission, …
