Neuronal Mct2 Promotes Angiogenesis Via Lactate In The Developing Mouse Neocortex, Daehoon Lee, Anika Wu, Lingling Yao, Shreya Satish, Lin Mei, Wen Cheng Xiong

Faculty Scholarship

Neural activity drives blood vessel (BV) formation and energy substrate delivery in the developing brain to meet rising metabolic demands; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we exposed neonatal mice to chronic whisker stimulation (WS), a paradigm known to enhance BV formation in the somatosensory (S1) cortex. Transcriptomic (RNA-seq) and spatial (RNA-scope) analyses revealed that WS upregulated monocarboxylate transporter 2 (MCT2) in cortical neurons and MCT1 in endothelial cells (ECs). These changes coincided with increased cortical lactate levels, elevated astrocytic vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFa), and enhanced angiogenesis. Functional experiments demonstrated that neuronal MCT2 is …

Wic Victory Gardens: Integrating Micro-Farming Into The Women, Infants, And Children Program To Expand Nutrition Access, Reduce Long-Term Costs, And Increase National Food Resilience, Joseph Jm Walker

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure introduces WIC Victory Gardens, an innovation that expands the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program beyond food consumption into food production. By enabling a portion of WIC benefits to be redeemed for gardening inputs—including seeds, starter plants, raised-bed kits, or hydroponic systems—families can produce their own fruits and vegetables at home. This reframes WIC as a capacity-building program that addresses multiple national challenges simultaneously: improving dietary quality, reducing obesity and diabetes risk, lowering long-term healthcare costs, and increasing mental health and family resilience. Economically, $100 in seeds can yield up to $2,500 in produce, offering a …

The Effects Of Plastic Mulch And Irrigation On Hemp Chemistry And Leaf Endophytes, Allison Rietman, Connor Morozumi, Robert C. Pearce, Natalie Christian

Journal of Agricultural Hemp Research

As an emerging crop, cultivation techniques for industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) are still being developed and optimized. For example, irrigation and plastic mulching are some management practices that have been touted for their benefits in improving crop quality. Both techniques ensure ample water availability, which has often been attributed to improving hemp cannabinoid and terpene composition. In this study, we examined how supplemental irrigation implemented in a plastic mulch system influenced the cannabinoid and terpene profiles of one cultivar of CBD hemp, Lifter. We grew industrial hemp in field with plastic mulch and applied regular irrigation to one group …

It enables debtors in financial distress to petition the competent court for protection, helping them avoid default and bankruptcy proceedings. The research employs qualitative and analytical approaches, focusing on the UAE Financial Restructuring and Bankruptcy Law No. 51 of 2023 (FRBL) and relevant case law. The findings indicate that preventive settlement procedures facilitate creditors in recovering their dues, which has a positive impact on the national economy. Consequently, the study recommends incorporating Article 57 FRBL, a requirement that …

Peculiarities Of Europeanisation Of State Aid Control In Ukraine During Martial Law, Bohdan Veselovskyi, Kseniia Smyrnova

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

Ukraine's European integration necessitates the alignment of its state aid control framework with EU competition law. The full-scale invasion by Russia in 2022 significantly disrupted this alignment, prompting Ukraine to temporarily suspend standard state aid oversight procedures under martial law. In response, Ukraine has undertaken comprehensive legislative reforms, including the adoption of sector-specific state aid criteria, enhanced administrative accountability measures, and systematic inventorying of existing aid schemes. This article analyses these developments, demonstrating Ukraine's ongoing commitment to restore regulatory certainty, transparency, and competitive neutrality, despite wartime constraints. Judicial practices incorporating EU-derived standards, particularly the Altmark criteria, highlight Ukraine's substantial progress …

This quality improvement initiative was a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) capstone project conducted at a clinic in the southeast United States. The project focused on evaluating the effectiveness of GLP-1 receptor agonist (RA) therapy in adults aged 30–50 years old with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), assessing the clinical effectiveness of existing GLP-1 prescribing practices in reducing hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels and weight over 6 months. The practice problem involved a lack of evidence-based monitoring and outcome tracking for patients on GLP-1 RAs despite the known efficacy of these medications in glycemic control. The project question was: Will HbA1c …

Comparing Fall Champions Versus Standard Protocol To Enhance Fall Prevention In An Adult Medical-Surgical Unit, Lily Denney

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

I conducted this quality improvement (QI) initiative with the aim of reducing inpatient falls within an adult medical-surgical unit through the implementation of a Fall Champions model supported by structured education and decentralized nursing leadership. Inpatient falls pose a persistent threat to patient safety, often leading to injury, prolonged hospitalization, and increased healthcare costs. Internal audits conducted through VigiLanz reporting revealed inconsistent protocol compliance and minimal accountability, signaling the need for targeted practice reform. Framed by the guiding question of whether Fall Champions could reduce inpatient falls compared to standard protocols, I evaluated the role of frontline leadership in reinforcing …

A Review Of Research And Practices On Teaching Data Visualizations For Blind And Visually Impaired Students, Shiya Cao Oct 2025

A Review Of Research And Practices On Teaching Data Visualizations For Blind And Visually Impaired Students, Shiya Cao

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Around 36 million people in the world are blind and an additional 217 million have moderate to severe vision impairment. In higher education, four percent of 54,204 undergraduates who participated in the 2022 American College Health Association survey reported to be blind or have low vision. Those students frequently do not have access to data visualizations we generally teach and use in postsecondary statistics and data science classes. The design of those visualizations is premised on implicit assumptions about the user’s visual ability. Making data visualizations accessible to blind and visually impaired (BVI) people would help improve equity in higher …

'It Doesn't Matter Where You Come From, It Matters Where You Go': Peninsula Dental Students' Career Decisions And Intentions, Ian Mills, Laura Clarry, Amy Rathbone, Marie Bryce, Sally Hanks

Peninsula Dental School

Introduction The south west of England is widely recognised as a 'dental desert' with limited access to NHS (National Health Service) dentistry. One of the major contributing factors to NHS capacity is recruitment and retention of dentists in the region, particularly in rural and coastal areas. Peninsula Dental School was established in 2006 to help address some of the workforce issues at that time, yet despite the success of the Dental School, many dental students still do not stay in the region following graduation.Aims This study aimed to understand factors that influence career intentions and decisions of present and past …

Phenotypic, Genetic And Genomic Prediction Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Irish Cattle, Clodagh Ryan Oct 2025

Phenotypic, Genetic And Genomic Prediction Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Irish Cattle, Clodagh Ryan

Theses

Enteric methane is the largest source of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland, accounting for 63% of the sector’s total. Achieving the legally binding target of a 25% reduction in agricultural emissions by 2030 requires low-cost, scalable mitigation strategies. Genetic selection offers a cumulative and permanent solution, with potential to reduce emissions without compromising productivity. This thesis aimed to quantify the genetic variability of methane and carbon dioxide emissions in growing beef cattle, investigate their relationships with economically important traits, and evaluate the feasibility of incorporating a methane trait into the Irish national beef breeding objective. Emissions data were collected …

Uncovering The Efficacy Of Unlabelled Data In Anomaly Detection, Andrew Shields Oct 2025

Uncovering The Efficacy Of Unlabelled Data In Anomaly Detection, Andrew Shields

Theses

Anomaly detection is an important area of research within data mining and has applications in many domains, including cybersecurity, finance, and healthcare. Conventional methods depend on labelled training data and assume an even class distribution, restricting their 'real-world' application, where rare anomalies and unlabelled data are the norm. This research addresses these limitations by investigating how unlabelled data can support anomaly detection in imbalanced, data-scarce, complex environments. It addresses three research questions: how to integrate unlabelled data into anomaly detection models, how to improve performance when labelled anomalies are scarce, and how graph-based methods capture complex relational anomalies. Three empirical …

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Religious practices can conjure distinctive ideas and images for different groups of people, especially religious festivals, which are signs of congregations, celebrations, and contentment, usually to mark the completion of religious obligations. All major religions celebrate notable festivals to mark important events and religious obligations that bring together followers of that faith. The year 2020 will be remembered as unique in the history of all faiths. As a result of the COVID-19 crisis, governments across the world announced compulsory measures such as ‘social distancing’ and ‘lockdown’ to avoid the spread of Coronavirus. Thus, all major religions either cancelled or reduced …
