Food and Animal Sciences Faculty Research

This study evaluated the antibacterial efficacy and growth-promoting potential of Moringa oleifera and Thymus vulgaris methanolic extracts in broiler chickens challenged with Escherichia coli O78. In vitro antibacterial screening using agar well diffusion and disc diffusion assays revealed that ciprofloxacin exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect, followed by tetracycline and enrofloxacin, whereas among plant extracts, T. vulgaris was more effective than M. oleifera. The optimal combination (M100T150; 100 mg M. oleifera + 150 mg T. vulgaris) produced the largest inhibition zones against E. coli strains. For the in vivo trial, 540 Ross-308 broiler chicks were distributed into six treatment groups in …

Improving Nurse Adherence To Medication Reconciliation During Patient Admissions To Reduce Medication Errors Through Targeted Education, Wendy J. Marlowe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Medication reconciliation errors are a significant clinical concern because they have the potential to result in serious or even life-threatening harm to patients. Implementing risk-reduction strategies through targeted education and systematic processes for medication reconciliation is crucial to enhancing patient safety and mitigating the risk of errors. Over 40% of medication errors occur during patient transitions, such as admissions, which are mainly due to inadequate medication reconciliation. The project addressed a practice-focused question to increase patient admission medication reconciliation by improving nurse knowledge by 20% and reducing medication errors by 60% within 2 months. I employed a pre-/posttest design in …

Top-Down Instruction Outweighs Emotional Salience: Nocturnal Sleep Physiology Indicates Selective Memory Consolidation, Laura B.F. Kurdziel, Carie Fiedler, Alex Gajewski, Caroline Pongratz

Psychology Faculty Publications

Introduction:

Sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation, not only stabilizing newly encoded information but also potentially supporting forgetting. Yet it remains unclear how sleep prioritizes what is retained or discarded when multiple salience cues, such as emotional valence and top-down instructional goals, compete for consolidation.

Methods:

In two studies, we examined how emotional content and intentional memory instruction interact to shape memory performance across a 12 h interval that included either nocturnal sleep or wakefulness. Participants completed a directed forgetting paradigm with neutral and negatively valenced words, followed by immediate recognition and delayed free recall.

Results:

In both …

Forensic Anthropologists As “Social Workers For The Deceased”: Integrating Social Work Standards And Collaborative Efforts In Long-Term Unidentified Human Remains Cases, Amy Michael, Samantha Blatt, Jennifer Bengtson, Scotia Mullin, Juliette R. Bedard, Samantha Unwin, Jose Sanchez

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Forensic anthropologists working in university laboratories are often curators of long-term unidentified human remains cases. Here, we review how and why anthropologists can effectively move toward case resolution by drawing on literature and collaborative best practices from the field of social work. Borrowing from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) standards for case management, we detail five standards that can be effectively followed during the forensic anthropological case investigation to ensure culturally sensitive and victim-centered approaches to human identification. While the field of forensic anthropology has its own professional standards developed through a consensus body and shared governance, these …

Implementation Of The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 As A Screening Tool For Depression, Nathalie Teboh Njofri Bih Oct 2025

Implementation Of The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 As A Screening Tool For Depression, Nathalie Teboh Njofri Bih

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Depression is a common mental health issue that is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed in primary care practice due to a lack of appropriate screening. The practice problem addressed by this project was the inconsistent use of standardized tools, like the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), which hinders timely and accurate depression diagnosis. The practice-focused question was: Does educating staff impact their knowledge of the recommended use and interpretation of the PHQ-9 and their confidence in administering the tool? I aimed to enhance depression screening practices by educating nursing staff on administering, scoring, and integrating the PHQ-9 into routine patient care. For …

Justice In A Sacrifice Zone; Early Land Use Battles And Environmental Injustice In Salt Lake City's Westside, Shiv Pandya

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

“Are we so buried under railroads and coal yards that we have no further rights?” — A Westside Resident, 1918 In 1918, residents of Salt Lake City’s Westside,” home to much of the city’s low-income, immigrant, and minority populations, protested the poten- tial codification of their community into an industrial zone where unchecked development would threaten their health and wellbeing.® Their “smoldering indignation . . . burst into flame” as they sought to make their voices heard, distributing a thousand leaflets to fellow Westsiders that called for a mass gathering in front of the city’s zoning committee.* Their efforts, while …

I Am A Person Too: The State's Failure To Secure Transgender Rights And Personhood, Trevor L.M. Reynolds

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The winds of change appeared to blow on June 15, 2020, when the Su- preme Court decided Bostock v. Clayton County. The Bostock decision—in which the Court held that discrimination based upon an employee’s gender identity violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act—has been heralded as a revolutionary triumph for the LGBTQ+ community. And yet, while the Bos- tock decision dictated that employers cannot terminate people based on their gender identity, it failed in the most important regard: establishing gender identity as a protected constitutional class. The Court, however, is not unique in its failure to secure transgender rights; …

The Illusion Of Protection: Examining The Enigmatic Privileges Or Immunities Clause, Victoria Hagerott Oct 2025

The Illusion Of Protection: Examining The Enigmatic Privileges Or Immunities Clause, Victoria Hagerott

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

For many years, the United States Supreme Court has protected unenu- merated rights, or rights not expressly stated in the United States Constitu- tion, under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.! However, the Court has revoked or limited protections for certain unenumerated rights under this Clause in recent years. Most notably, in June 2022, the Supreme Court held in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that the Con- stitution does not confer the right to an abortion and thereby overtuming nearly fifty years of precedent that began with Roe v. Wade in 19732 To reach its holding in …

Perceived Political Party Divide During The Pandemic: A Framework Linking Attitude Strength Toward Covid-19 Vaccines To Affective Polarization, Hyungjin Gill, Heysung Lee, Soo Yun Kim, Xining Liao, Hernando Rojas

Communication Faculty Publications

This study examines how perceived political party divide may foster affective polarization during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on nationally representative sample surveys of U.S. and South Korean adults, we investigate the relationship between attitude strength toward COVID-19 vaccines, perceived polarization, and affective polarization. Results suggest that individuals with stronger attitudes toward vaccines are more likely to perceive a greater ideological divide between political parties, which in turn, is associated with increased animosity toward the opposing party. Applying the mediation model to the South Korean sample yielded consistent findings, suggesting that the mechanism by which strong attitudes relate to negative emotions …

Background: Obesity is thought to increase cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk partly through dyslipidemia. Yet, obesity's effects on dyslipidemia are not uniform. Understanding the shared genetic basis between obesity and lipid traits can provide insight into this heterogeneity and its implications for CVD risk.

Methods: We examined local genetic correlations between three lipid measures [high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), and triglycerides (TG)] and body mass index (BMI) using genome-wide association study summary statistics from European ancestry UK Biobank participants. We identified genomic loci with opposing genetic effects on obesity and dyslipidemia risk (protective BMI-lipid loci) and those with …

Du Bois And The Promotion Of Admissions Diversity: A Post-Grutter Analysis, Austin Burke

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Today’s outlook on higher education for people of color is in question. Because of the downfall of affirmative action, higher educational facilities must look to factors other than race to increase or maintain diversity. W.E.B. Du Bois viewed education as a means to uplift Black people. In a time of uncertain missions of higher education, and a steadfast commitment to a con- tinuous uplift of the Black community, it is paramount to view all angles of solutions to the end of affirmative action. In analy=zing the shifting educa- tional philosophy of Du Bois against the modern struggle of maintaining di- …
