The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), caused by Ehrlichia canis, is a globally prevalent tick-borne disease with significant hematologic manifestations, including anemia and thrombocytopenia. Doxycycline is the first-line treatment, but its effects on hematologic recovery remain inconsistently reported. This meta-analysis evaluates the impact of doxycycline on hematologic parameters in E. canis-infected dogs. A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE. Five studies (one randomized controlled trial, four non-randomized trials) involving 116 dogs were included. Data on erythrocytes, leukocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes), platelets, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were extracted. Heterogeneity was assessed using I² statistics, …

Successful Therapeutic Response Of Intravenous Immunoglobulin In Guillain-Barre Syndrome With Onset More Than Two Weeks: A Case Report, Ezra Immanuelly Pribadi, Fauna Herawati, Valentinus Besin, Marisca Evalina Gondokesumo

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), with a global incidence of 1–2 cases per 100,000 population annually, remains the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis. Standard treatment includes plasma exchange within 4 weeks or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) within 2 weeks of symptom onset. However, IVIg may still benefit selected late-presenting cases. Here, we report a case a 17-year-old male presented with progressive bilateral limb weakness and paresthesia that began approximately 3 weeks before admission. He also experienced a brief syncope episode and defecation syncope, indicating possible autonomic involvement. On hospital day 3, after shared decision-making, the family opted for IVIg over plasma …

A Rare Variation In The Branching Pattern Of The Axillary Artery, Preethi Umanath, Sutha Selvaraj Oct 2025

A Rare Variation In The Branching Pattern Of The Axillary Artery, Preethi Umanath, Sutha Selvaraj

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

ABSTRACT:

BACKGROUND: This study aims to elucidate a previously unreported rare variation in the branching pattern of the third part of the axillary artery.

Results and discussion: During the routine dissection of a male cadaver, it was observed that the third part branches of the left axillary artery, specifically the anterior and posterior circumflex humeral arteries, were completely absent. To compensate for the missing branches, an unusual ascending branch emerged from the arteria profunda brachii (a branch of the brachial artery). This branch later divided into two: the deltoid branch, which accompanied the axillary nerve, entered in to …

Should Private Universities Tie Themselves To The First Amendment?, Keith E. Whittington Oct 2025

Should Private Universities Tie Themselves To The First Amendment?, Keith E. Whittington

The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues

Private colleges and universities are generally free to depart from First Amendment standards regarding their own regulation of speech on campus and among campus community members. They may adopt more restrictive speech regimes that would sharply separate them from their public university counterparts which are bound by First Amendment requirements. In the modern era, private universities have nonetheless generally chosen to voluntarily embrace something like First Amendment principles to guide their own internal governance. Some would prefer that they shed those commitments and adopt some alternative speech regime. In this Article, I argue that private universities generally should adopt free …
