Demographic And Biomechanical Factors Associated With Knee Excursion Angles Outside The Accepted Range, Karly Mendez
Demographic And Biomechanical Factors Associated With Knee Excursion Angles Outside The Accepted Range, Karly Mendez
Doctorate in Kinesiology
The knee is one of the most frequently injured musculoskeletal systems among long-distance runners, and these injuries may be explained by biomechanical inefficiencies and imbalances between the quadriceps and hamstrings. Common knee injuries in runners include patellofemoral pain syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, and meniscal irritation. These injuries have the potential to interfere with training, reduce the number of races runners partake in, and affect performance in the long-term. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between quadriceps and hamstring strength and biomechanics of the knee involving long-distance runners experiencing knee pain or discomfort. Specifically, two-dimensional (2D) gait …

The cellular etiology of seizures in CLN2 disease, a childhood-onset neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of tripeptidyl peptidase 1 (TPP1), remains elusive. Given that Cln2R207X/R207X mice display fatal spontaneous seizures and an early loss of several cortical GABAergic interneuron populations, we hypothesized that these 2 events might be causally related. To study the cell-autonomous effects of interneuron-specific TPP1 deficiency, we first generated transgenic mice expressing loxP-flanked lysosomal membrane-tethered TPP1 (TPP1LAMP1 mice) on the Cln2R207X/R207X genetic background, and then crossed TPP1LAMP1 mice with Vgat-Cre mice. These Vgat-Cre; TPP1LAMP1 mice accumulated storage material in cortical and striatal interneurons. Vgat-Cre; …

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, thus, there is an urgent need to develop more effective therapeutic options for this dismal condition. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are associated with improved response to immune checkpoint blockade in HCC, but their low abundance in most cases limits their therapeutic efficacy. Here, we demonstrate, in mice, that low-dose intratumoral immunovirotherapy with the trivalent measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) induces superior tumor-growth delay and extended host survival compared to individually administered vaccines for measles, mumps, or rubella viruses. Further, our results show that MMR therapy synergizes with PD-1 and …

The creation of virtual humans increasingly leverages automated synthesis of speech and gestures, enabling expressive, adaptable agents that effectively engage users. However, the independent development of voice and gesture generation technologies, alongside the growing popularity of virtual reality (VR), presents significant questions about the integration of these signals and their ability to convey emotional detail in immersive environments. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of real and synthetic gestures and speech, alongside varying levels of immersion (VR vs. 2D displays) and emotional contexts (positive, neutral, negative) on user perceptions. We investigate how immersion affects the perceived match between gestures …

In this holdover proceeding, the tenant moved to dismiss, arguing the landlord waived its right to enforce the no-pet provision under NYC Administrative Code § 27-2009.1. The tenant claimed openly and notoriously harboring a dog, and the landlord failed to commence an eviction proceeding within 90 days of knowledge. The court found the landlord's emails and notices proved actual knowledge of the pet's presence more than 90 days before commencing the suit. Consequently, the landlord waived its right to enforce the no-pet clause, and the tenant's motion to dismiss was granted.

Policies that mandate disclosure of innovative project outcomes aim to increase innovation by limiting wasteful duplicative innovation. Yet, such policies change not only the ex-post information environment but also firms' ex-ante innovation incentives. Firms may slow down their own innovation efforts in anticipation of increased disclosure by others. We examine the innovation-related impacts of the 2017 FDA Final Rule amendment, which mandates disclosure of clinical trial results for pharmaceutical firms. We show that the policy hastened and increased disclosure of results for clinical trials post-completion, but also increased the time to completion of clinical trials, the time between early phases …

Talc pleurodesis is highly effective for preventing recurrence of pneumothorax and pleural effusion, but it can be complicated by dissemination, acute lung injury, lead exposure, and foreign body-induced chronic inflammation and pain. Our objective is to develop a safe, biodegradable, contaminant-free particle for pleurodesis. We used mouse models of pneumothorax and malignant pleural effusion to compare the efficacy and safety of pleurodesis with talc and hydroxyapatite microspheres (HAM). Intrapleural instillation of microspheres induced pleural adhesions, fibrosis, and symphysis as effectively as talc and resulted in more durable protection from experimental pneumothorax. HAM and talc both induced an osteoclastogenic, inflammatory, and …

Background: The collection of dietary behavior data is crucial in childbearing populations. In addition to observed inequities in perinatal dietary intake and quality, burdensome assessment methods (eg, 24-h dietary recall) may limit research participation for some groups. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is associated with reduced recall bias and participant convenience, but there is a dearth of studies with diverse cohorts.
Objective: Our aim is to describe participant completion of food intake items in EMA surveys, overall and across individual characteristics (eg, prepregnancy BMI).
Methods: Using secondary EMA data from participants in a longitudinal study, we report average completion rates of …

College of Population Health Faculty Papers
Background: Failure to rescue (FTR), defined as death after major postoperative complications, is a critical quality indicator in pancreatic cancer surgery. Despite advances in surgical techniques and perioperative care, FTR rates remain high and vary across institutions. Methods: This systematic review uses a narrative synthesis followed by PRISMA 2020. A PubMed search (1992-2025) identified 83 studies; after screening, 52 studies (2010-2025) were included. Eligible designs were registry-based, multicenter, single-center, or prospective audits. Given substantial heterogeneity in study designs, FTR definitions, and outcome measures, a narrative synthesis was performed; no formal risk-of-bias assessment or meta-analysis was conducted. Results: …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia globally. The accumulation of amyloid and tau proteins, neuronal cell death and neuroinflammation are seen with AD progression, resulting in memory and cognitive impairment. Microglia are crucial for AD progression as they engage with neural cells and protein aggregates to regulate amyloid pathology and neuroinflammation. Recent studies indicate that microglia contribute to the propagation of amyloid beta (Aβ) via their immunomodulatory functions including Aβ phagocytosis and inflammatory cytokine production. Three-dimensional cell culture techniques provide the opportunity to study pathophysiological changes in AD in human-derived samples that are difficult to recapitulate in …

The NPIP gene family is among the most positively selected gene families in humans/apes and drives independent duplication in primate lineages. These duplications promote genetic instability, leading to recurrent disease-associated microduplication and microdeletion syndromes. Despite its importance, little is known about its function or variation in humans, as short-read sequencing cannot distinguish high-identity duplications. Using long-read assemblies of 169 human haplotypes, we find extreme variation in the content and organization of NPIP loci. We identify fixed and polymorphic paralogs and observe ongoing positive selection. With long-read RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), we create paralog-specific gene models, the majority of which were not …
