Overview Of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Grace Ann Steiner
Overview Of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Grace Ann Steiner
The Kabod
Traumatic events are often unexpected and can be experienced in a variety of ways; individuals may directly be involved, witness the event, or hear about traumatic events occurring to people that they know. Traumatic events can be due to human actions (such as war, terrorism, violence, or sexual abuse), but can also be secondary to nature (such as hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, or flooding); the event itself does not determine if an event is traumatic, but rather, the individual’s perception and experience of such an event. Thus, trauma can occur at any developmental age and vary between individuals due to personal …

Primary Hyperaldosteronism, Joanna Lam
The Kabod
This paper will give an overview of primary hyperaldosteronism, which is a condition characterized by the excess production of aldosterone from the adrenal glands. Since its discovery in 1954 by James Conn, primary hyperaldosteronism has been discovered to have a variety of causes, with the more common ones being either benign tumors or inherited disorders such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Affected patients display conditions such as hypertension or hypokalemia, which may lead to symptoms including headaches, blurred vision, or dizziness. This paper will cover the anatomy of the adrenal glands, along with the normal physiology and synthesis of aldosterone. Aldosterone’s …
Types Of Burns And Burn Care, Frances Hagberg
Types Of Burns And Burn Care, Frances Hagberg
The Kabod
Burn treatment focuses on minimizing tissue damage, preventing infection, managing pain, and promoting optimal healing. The severity of burns—classified as first, second, or third degree—determines the appropriate therapeutic approach, which may include wound cleaning, topical antibiotics, dressings, fluid resuscitation, and surgical interventions such as debridement or grafting. Effective treatment requires careful monitoring and support through each healing stage to reduce complications and improve functional and cosmetic outcomes.

The Impacts Of Chronic Infections On Shaping Cellular Senescence, Ashley Johnson, Troy Rought, Jacob Aronov, Princess Pokharel, Angelina Chiu, Azadeh Nasuhidehnavi
Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Cellular senescence is a fundamental biological process characterized by stable cell cycle arrest, genomic instability, and the acquisition of a proinflammatory secretory phenotype. While senescence is traditionally associated with aging, growing evidence reveals that chronic infections such as viral, bacterial, and protozoan parasites can serve as powerful inducers of senescence, contributing to premature aging and long-term tissue damage. This review explores the diverse mechanisms by which persistent pathogens trigger or sustain senescence in host cells. We highlight how these chronic infections manipulate host DNA repair, mitochondrial dynamics, telomere maintenance, oxidative stress, and immune function to promote senescence and immunosenescence. Emerging …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
This mixed-methods study investigated the motivations and experiences of Health Mentors (HMs), community volunteers with chronic health conditions who participated in the Health Mentors Program at Thomas Jefferson University (HMP). During the 18-month three-module program, HMs work with interprofessional teams of healthcare students as they learn about teaming principles and experiences of patients living with chronic conditions. 73 HMs whose time volunteering for HMP ranged from 1 to 15 years completed a survey following module 2 in the Spring of 2020. The survey consisted of quantitative and qualitative questions regarding why they participate, their experiences with the program, and its …

Predictors Of Lower-Limb Arterial Occlusion Pressure Across Commonly Used Cuff Widths, Isaac J. Wedig, Isaac M. Lennox, Erich J. Petushek, John J. Durocher, John Mcdaniel, Steven J. Elmer
Michigan Tech Publications
We compared predictors of lower-limb arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) across commonly used blood flow restriction (BFR) cuff widths (11, 13, 18 cm) and developed prediction equations to estimate AOP for each cuff. Participants (n = 116) underwent measurements of thigh circumference (TC), systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, and AOP was assessed using Doppler ultrasound in a seated position. Multiple linear regression models with commonality analysis and mixed-effects models were used to identify and compare predictors of AOP between each cuff. LASSO regression with bootstrap resampling was used to develop and internally validate prediction equations. TC, SBP, DBP, age, …

A Discussion Of Community: An Ethnography Of Designing Asynchronous Video Discussions To Reveal Student Perceptions Of Digital Presence In Online Learning, Chad S. Garcia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This mixed-methods digital ethnography investigates how video-based discussions (VBD) influence community building in asynchronous graduate education. Using the Community of Inquiry (COI) framework, this study looks at student experiences in a History of Higher Education class where traditional text-based discussions were replaced with video presentations and peer responses. The research explores how video discussions affect students' sense of presence, how video presence impacts engagement patterns, and which multimedia elements contribute to community development.
Data collection included semi-structured interviews with students and instructors, LMS analytics, video content analysis, and ethnographic observation throughout Spring 2024. Analysis revealed a notable disconnect between traditional …

Sleeping To Support? The Interactive Effects Of Leader Sleep Quantity And Quality On Leader- And Employee-Reported Support Behaviors, Jordyn J. Leslie, Tori Crain, Rebecca M. Brossoit, Leslie B. Hammer, Todd Bodner, Cynthia D. Mohr
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although research has documented the relationship between sleep and work outcomes among employees, less research has focused on the role of sleep among workplace leaders. We investigate the link between leader self-reported and actigraphic sleep quantity and outcomes of positive leader support behaviors (i.e., family supportive supervisor behaviors [FSSB], and sleep leadership supportive behaviors [SLSB]) reported by both the leader (N = 178) and their direct reports (N = 393). Additionally, we examine the interaction between leader sleep quantity and sleep quality indicators (i.e., insomnia symptoms, sleep dissatisfaction, and actigraphic wake after sleep onset [WASO]) on FSSB and SLSB. The aim of this study was to understand the experiences of rural, first-generation college (RFGC) students in relation to dominant culturally normative expectations about postsecondary educational and workforce trajectories. The study adopted patterns of engagement with a master narrative as both a conceptual framework and unit of analysis, examining both biography and cultural ecologies as well as highlighting agency in the lives and choices of study participants. Evidence is drawn from 4 in-depth narrative interviews with each of 14 RFGC students, conducted both at school and students’ homes, from rural and small-town communities. Results show that a master narrative of …
