Assessing Septic Service Availability And Pricing Across Coastal South Carolina, Dawoon Jeong, Amy E. Scaroni, Marzieh Motallebi

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (OWTS), also known as septic systems, are widely used across the United States, particularly in rural and coastal areas that lack access to centralized sewer infrastructure. Regular maintenance, such as pump-outs, is essential for preserving system performance and protecting environmental health. This study examines the availability, pricing, and accessibility of septic services in coastal South Carolina, a region increasingly impacted by environmental pressures, including tidal flooding, rising sea levels, and frequent storms. Drawing on survey data from both septic service providers and users, we identify key barriers to effective septic system management. Our findings reveal that …

Think Piece: New South Korean Framework For Conceptualizing Nonkoreans?: Taehanoegugin And The Politics Of National Boundary-Making, Min Joo Lee

Asia Pacific Perspectives

Taehanoegugin is a newly coined Korean term that gained popularity around 2018 when a television program of the same name began airing on one of the Korean cable networks. Hence, translated, the term means the Republic of Korean-foreigners. The term gained popularity enough to be adopted by other television entertainment programs and a sector of the government. What can we make of the term’s popularity? Does …

AETHERIS AND THE ECONOMICS OF RESONANCE

Why the physics of coherence becomes the business model of trust

1. The Shift From Efficiency to Coherence

For the past century, growth came from efficiency: doing more work with fewer inputs. Buqt efficiency has a hidden limit—it assumes the environment is static and controllable. In a post-quantum, post-pandemic, climate-entangled world, stability comes not from control but from coherence—the capacity of …

The Triadic Kernel of ResonanceOS: Compassion, Gratitude, and Trust as The Firmware Operators of Reality

Abstract

This disclosure introduces the triadic kernel of ResonanceOS, a framework grounded in the principle and Grand Unifying Theory of Quantum Perspective Is Everything (QPIE). Building upon prior releases that identified compassion as an amplifier of coherence and gratitude as its stabilizer, this manifesto extends the kernel by introducing trust as the propagation operator Together, these three operators form the firmware layer of existence: compassion amplifies resonance, gratitude stabilizes resonance, and trust propagates resonance through time, networks, and systems By situating this triadic kernel …

Sticker Shock Due Process, Alex Dougherty Neumann Oct 2025

Sticker Shock Due Process, Alex Dougherty Neumann

Duke Law Journal

To address undesirable conduct like infringing a copyright or placing a robocall, legislatures have created statutory causes of action that enable plaintiffs to file private suits. Instead of needing to prove actual damages from a defendant's conduct, many statutory causes of action allow a plaintiff to pursue a predefined damages amount per statutory violation. The damages are known as statutory damages, and their elegance lies in how they scale linearly, or one-to-one, with every violation by a defendant. But in the digital age, where automated technologies can generate millions of violations without human oversight, courts are now confronting monstrous aggregate …

Forfeiture Takings, Police Power, And Necessity Destruction, Shelley Ross Saxer

University of Miami Law Review

Civil forfeiture laws allow law enforcement to seize property when there is probable cause it has been used or possessed in violation of legal rules, often before an owner has a chance to contest the government’s seizure in court. In the criminal context, forfeiture is typically an in personam action that requires a criminal conviction and is part of a defendant’s sentence. In the civil context, however, forfeiture is an in rem proceeding brought against the property derived from or used to commit an offense––not against the person who committed the offense. As such, a civil forfeiture may not require …

Faculty Research 2025

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WDSTS) is a rare genetic cause of intellectual disability that is primarily caused by heterozygous loss-of-function variants in the gene encoding the histone lysine methyltransferase 2A (KMT2A). Prior studies have shown successful postnatal amelioration of disease phenotypes for Rett, Rubinstein-Taybi, and Kabuki syndromes, which are related Mendelian disorders of the epigenetic machinery. To explore whether the neurological phenotype in WDSTS is treatable in utero, we created a mouse model carrying a loss-of-function variant placed between 2 loxP sites. Kmt2a+/LSL mice demonstrated core features of WDSTS including growth retardation, craniofacial abnormalities, and hypertrichosis as well as hippocampal memory defects. …
