Analyzing Surface Spectral Signature Shifts In Fire-Affected Areas Of Elko County Nevada, Ibtihaj Ahmad, Haroon Stephen

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

This study investigates post-fire vegetation transitions and spectral responses in the Snowstorm Fire (2017) and South Sugarloaf Fire (2018) in Nevada using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) surface reflectance imagery and unsupervised ISODATA classification. By comparing pre-fire and post-fire conditions, we have assessed changes in vegetation composition, spectral signatures, and the emergence of novel land cover types. The results revealed widespread conversion of shrubland and conifer-dominated systems to herbaceous cover with significant reductions in near-infrared reflectance and elevated shortwave infrared responses, indicative of vegetation loss and surface alteration. In the South Sugarloaf Fire, three new spectral classes emerged post-fire, …

Redefining Section 230 Immunity, Lucas Dini Oct 2025

Redefining Section 230 Immunity, Lucas Dini

Seattle University Law Review

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act has provided broad immunity to online platforms for third-party content which was the foundation for the internet's growth. However, the rise in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to produce algorithms to curate content to users of online services has blurred the line between being a passive host of third party content and active editorial control. This Note examines the legal, policy, and constitutional implications of applying Section 230 immunity to platforms that use AI to curate and promote third-party content. This analysis argues that algorithmic promotion of third-party content constitutes a platform's …

Overcrowding The System: Rethinking Juvenile Justice In Washington State, Mckenna White Oct 2025

Overcrowding The System: Rethinking Juvenile Justice In Washington State, Mckenna White

Seattle University Law Review

The recent crisis at Green Hill School highlights the detrimental consequences of severe overcrowding in Washington State’s Juvenile Rehabilitation system—a problem exacerbated by the implementation of the JR to 25 legislation. This Note argues that the juvenile rehabilitation system, which is currently struggling to manage a wide age range of offenders, necessitates a fundamental rethinking of juvenile justice practices. By examining neurological research indicating continued brain development into the mid-twenties, along with the high prevalence of trauma among justice-involved youth, this Note proposes the creation of a dedicated third system of care within the Department of Children, Youth, and Families …

Bad To The Bone: A Holistic Approach To Unravel Risk Factors Related To Tibial Bone Stress Injury In Young Distance Runners, Samuel Miller Lyons Oct 2025

Bad To The Bone: A Holistic Approach To Unravel Risk Factors Related To Tibial Bone Stress Injury In Young Distance Runners, Samuel Miller Lyons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are a prevalent overuse injury in endurance runners, particularly at the distal tibia. These injuries develop when repetitive mechanical loading exceeds the bone’s ability to adapt and recover, leading to microdamage accumulation and, in severe cases, fracture. While both mechanical loading and physiological factors such as bone mineral density (BMD) and energy availability are thought to contribute to BSI risk, they are rarely assessed together, and most mechanical assessments remain confined to laboratory settings. The objective of this dissertation was to develop practical methods to measure tibial compressive force (TCF) outside of the lab, examine how …

Structure And Legitimation In Capitalism: Law, Power, And Justice In Market Society, Yochai Benkler Oct 2025

Structure And Legitimation In Capitalism: Law, Power, And Justice In Market Society, Yochai Benkler

Law and Contemporary Problems

This article introduces a new institutional political economy of capitalism that explains the distinctive dynamics that drive sustained productivity growth, recurring social dislocation, and persistent patterns of exploitation in modern market societies. It then analyzes the role of law in structuring social relations of production in capitalism and legitimating those structures so as to stabilize the asymmetric social relations they create. Law structures social relations of production by allocating control over labor, knowledge, natural resources, and technology, as used for purposes of both subsistence and market-oriented production, as well coordination and cooperation in labor and investment processes, access to means …

Establishing A Framework Of Best Management Practices For Sustainable Water Quality: Integration Of Technology And Remote Sensing, Mason L. Marcantel

LSU Master's Theses

Water quality security is a complex management issue that is constantly challenged by factors of seasonal variability in climate change, urban population growth, and agricultural intensification. These factors warrant the need for innovative technological adaptations to management practices that integrate remote monitoring, predictive modeling, and sustainable resource utilization. This study establishes a framework for sustainable water quality practices through the integration of remote sensing technology for urban wastewater treatment and agricultural irrigation systems. This dual-site research study explores seasonal water quality dynamics and technological interventions to create a more proactive approach to water quality security.

In the first study, water …

Addressing The Root Of Housing Insecurity: Washington Should Divest From “Crime-Free” Housing Programs, Sarah Cerdena Oct 2025

Addressing The Root Of Housing Insecurity: Washington Should Divest From “Crime-Free” Housing Programs, Sarah Cerdena

Seattle University Law Review

Crime-Free Rental Housing Properties (CFRHPs) have proven to be an ineffective and inequitable approach to public safety. Often, tenants in these properties are evicted—at times, extrajudicially—as a result of conduct that does not rise to violations of their lease provisions, much less criminal behavior. By placing extraordinary power in the hands of local law enforcement to carry out these ordinances, CFRHPs predictably pose significant harm to Black and Latinx communities, survivors of domestic violence, disabled tenants, and low-income tenants generally. Recently, the Washington State Supreme Court grappled with the tensions arising between CFRHPs and the enforcement of Washington landlord-tenant law. …

Supporting Clinical Identification Of Children With Sensory Integration Challenges: A Decision Guide For Primary Care Providers, Shelly J. Lane, Sarah A. Schoen, Roseann Schaaf, Anita Bundy, Zoe Mailloux, Susanne Smith Roley, Teresa A. May-Benson, L. Diane Parham

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

Background: Children and youth often have challenges processing and integrating sensory information. These increasingly common challenges and can significantly impact development, learning, behavior, well-being, and participation in everyday activities. Since children with sensory integration challenges, with or without other concerns, are likely to present first to their primary care provider (PCP), it is important that they have resources about sensory integration challenges and their impact on the child or the need to refer these children for further assessment and intervention. Our aim is to assist PCPs in their clinical decision-making.

Methods: We conducted a narrative review of CINAHL, PsychInfo, and …

Sleep And Sleep Disorders: Much More Than How Long You Sleep, What Truly Matters Is How You Sleep, Teresa Arora, Claudia R.C. Moreno

All Works

Since the discovery of electroencephalography to measure brain activity in 1924, sleep research has rapidly advanced. Contemporary sleep research no longer focuses on the length of sleep and the consequences of sleep loss. Instead, a multitude of sleep parameters, such as sleep duration, quality, irregularity, health, and disordered sleep, now inform the sleep science community about the importance of sleep in relation to health, performance, cognitive, cultural, and clinical outcomes through diverse study designs, equipment, and across a range of populations. This special issue on sleep and its disorders has shown us how diverse and widespread the study of sleep …

Narratives Of Vietnamese Teachers: Exploring Existential Givens Of Freedom, Meaning, And Isolation, Huy D. Nguyen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Drawing on Yalom’s framework of existential givens, this study explores how Vietnamese teachers experience existential freedom, existential isolation, and life meaningfulness. The notion of experience serves as the conceptual and interpretive foundation through which participants articulate these existential dimensions. Three participants were selected, and data were collected from online journal entries, vignette responses, and semi-structured interviews. Methodologically, it adopts intuitive inquiry as both conceptual lens and analytic process, integrating multiple modes of knowing and embodied understanding to explore how teachers imagine, experience, and interpret their work. To deepen interpretation, narrative structuring was incorporated to reveal the emotional and relational textures …

Detection Of Sweet Potato Feathery Mottle Virus Infection Via Remote Hyperspectral Imaging, Clayton Blake Oct 2025

Detection Of Sweet Potato Feathery Mottle Virus Infection Via Remote Hyperspectral Imaging, Clayton Blake

LSU Master's Theses

In sweetpotato, global production exceeds 90 million tons annually, yet yields are threatened by numerous pathogens, including the potyvirus sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV). Virus infections can reduce yields by 25–40%, but surveillance is hampered by asymptomatic infections and the labor-intensive nature of detection. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), combined with machine learning (ML), offers a promising pathway to scalable, non-destructive detection; however, studies focused on virus infection in sweetpotato remain limited.

This study demonstrates the feasibility of ML-enabled HSI for SPFMV detection under greenhouse conditions via a curated spectral library of two commercial cultivars, 'Beauregard' and 'Orleans', and the biological …

Women With Persistent Atrial Fibrillation Need More Than Pulmonary Vein Isolation: Personalised Extra-Pulmonary Vein Ablation Strategy Vs. Pulmonary Vein Isolation Alone In The Tailored-Af Trial, Isabel Deisenhofer, Daniel H Cooper, Et Al. Oct 2025

Women With Persistent Atrial Fibrillation Need More Than Pulmonary Vein Isolation: Personalised Extra-Pulmonary Vein Ablation Strategy Vs. Pulmonary Vein Isolation Alone In The Tailored-Af Trial, Isabel Deisenhofer, Daniel H Cooper, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

AIMS: There is still conflicting evidence if women with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) profit from a pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) plus strategy. We evaluated the efficacy of a spatio-temporal dispersion-targeted ablation strategy in women from the TAILORED-AF trial.

METHODS AND RESULTS: In TAILORED-AF, 370 patients were randomised to either a personalised, artificial intelligence (AI)-guided tailored ablation or to PVI-only. AF substrate mapping data and 12-month ablation outcomes were compared between women and men. Overall, 21% patients were female (70.4 ± 6.9 vs. 64.5 ± 8.5 years for men, P < 0.001). While spatio-temporal dispersion extent was similar between groups, left atrial low-voltage surface area (< 0.2 mV) was significantly larger in women (P < 0.01). In women, the single-procedure freedom from AF (76% vs. 50%, log-rank P < 0.001) and any atrial arrhythmia (56% vs. 38%, log-rank P < 0.05) were significantly superior to PVI alone with a tailored procedure. In the PVI-only group, the single-procedure freedom from AF (50% vs. 70%, log-rank P < 0.001) and any atrial arrhythmia (38% vs. 61%, log-rank P < 0.001) were significantly lower in women. After a tailored ablation, no significant differences were observed between women and men regarding freedom from AF (76% vs. 91%, log-rank P = 0.07) or any atrial arrhythmia (56% vs. 62%, log-rank P = 0.69) free survival.

CONCLUSION: Compared to men, PVI-only in women with persistent AF leads …

How Augmin Establishes The Angle Of The Microtubule Branch Site, Sophie M Travis, Jodi Kraus, Collin T Mcmanus, Kiana Golden, Rui Zhang, Sabine Petry Oct 2025

How Augmin Establishes The Angle Of The Microtubule Branch Site, Sophie M Travis, Jodi Kraus, Collin T Mcmanus, Kiana Golden, Rui Zhang, Sabine Petry

2020-Current year OA Pubs

How microtubules (MTs) are generated in the proper orientation is essential to understanding how the cytoskeleton organizes a cell and MT-dependent events such as cell division. In the spindle, most MTs are generated through the branching MT nucleation pathway. In this pathway, new MTs are nucleated from the side of existing MTs and oriented at a shallow angle by the branching factor augmin, ensuring that both MTs have the same polarity. Yet, how augmin binds MTs and sets the branch angle has remained unclear. Here, we report the cryo-electron microscopy structure of an augmin subcomplex on the MT. This structure …
