Early life stress (ELS) profoundly impacts the brain and correlates with negative affective behaviors in adulthood. The locus coeruleus (LC), a stress-responsive brainstem nucleus that supplies most of the brain with norepinephrine (NE), is known to modulate negative affect. Using repeated maternal separation stress (MSS), we investigated the impact of ELS on the LC and stress-related behaviors in adulthood. We performed ex vivo cell-attached electrophysiology across the lifespan to reveal that MSS significantly increased LC firing during early development and adulthood but not in pre-adolescence and adolescence. We next examined potential changes in the expression of genes linked to LC …

Holistic Criminal Justice, Hadar Dancig-Rosenberg Nov 2025

Holistic Criminal Justice, Hadar Dancig-Rosenberg

Vanderbilt Law Review

What does it mean to adopt a holistic approach to criminal justice? This symposium treats that question as a foundational inquiry into the theory, practice, and institutional architecture of criminal law. At a time of eroding public trust, a broad recognition that mass incarceration both reflects and entrenches structural inequality, growing pressure on legal actors to account for the human costs of their decisions, and anxiety about the rule of law, revisiting the normative commitments of criminal law feels like an urgent task. Holistic criminal justice is not a single method or intervention. It is a reorientation—a conceptual framework and …

A Fear About Holistic Justice, Farhang Heydari Nov 2025

A Fear About Holistic Justice, Farhang Heydari

Vanderbilt Law Review

It is a great irony of our criminal system that the enforcement of our criminal laws has long had aspects of lawlessness. Although criminal statutes define impermissible conduct by members of the public, they generally offer little guidance for state actors enforcing them.' Officers can choose which offenders to cite or arrest and which to let go. Prosecutors can choose which charges to pursue and what pleas to offer. Executives select whom to pardon and how to allocate enforcement resources. Some see the discretion vested in government actors as a virtue-- a safety valve in a system that punishes too …

Anti-Holistic Algorithms, Itay Ravid Nov 2025

Anti-Holistic Algorithms, Itay Ravid

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article presents a critical tension in modern criminal justice between holistic criminal justice aspirations and algorithmic governance: whether the holistic rehabilitation and reintegration project can survive technological determinism. As criminal legal systems embrace algorithmic risk assessment tools as solutions to address recidivism, this Article reveals a profound epistemological concern: the fundamental incompatibility between viewing offenders as whole persons capable of transformation and reducing them to statistical probabilities within computational matrices. By doing so, it demonstrates how algorithmic mediation fundamentally alters and potentially destroys the holistic message itself.

In establishing this argument, the Article advances in two stages. It first …

Plan-B Activist Defense: Defending Animal-Rights Activists In Courtrooms Hostile To Political Argumentation, Hadar Aviram Nov 2025

Plan-B Activist Defense: Defending Animal-Rights Activists In Courtrooms Hostile To Political Argumentation, Hadar Aviram

Vanderbilt Law Review

In recent years, several animal rights activists faced criminal charges for rescuing animals from factory farms. The standard legal approach in these cases has been relying on the necessity defense, which has a long history in cases of civil disobedience and ideologically driven crime. Animal law scholarship on this topic tends to focus on explaining why the defense applies to open rescue. However, as recent trials have demonstrated, actual courtrooms in rural counties tend to be hostile to the necessity defense, and judges can and do rely on Supreme Court precedent to keep it out of the courtroom.

Autophagy is an essential cellular process which functions to maintain homeostasis in response to stressors such as starvation or infection. Here, we report that a subset of autophagy factors including ATG-3 play an antiviral role in Orsay virus infection of Caenorhabditis elegans. Orsay virus infection does not modulate autophagic flux, and re-feeding after starvation limits Orsay virus infection and blocks autophagic flux, suggesting that the role of ATG-3 in Orsay virus susceptibility is independent of its role in maintaining autophagic flux. atg-3 mutants phenocopy rde-1 mutants, which have a defect in RNA interference (RNAi), in susceptibility to Orsay virus infection …

Episodic Memory Involves Transient And Sparse Connectivity Aligned To Both Internal And External Events, Adam J. O. Dede, Peter Brunner, Jarod L. Roland, Et Al. Nov 2025

Episodic Memory Involves Transient And Sparse Connectivity Aligned To Both Internal And External Events, Adam J. O. Dede, Peter Brunner, Jarod L. Roland, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Episodic memory depends on the coordination of local processing, indexed by high-frequency broadband (HFB) activity, with global organization, indexed by theta oscillations. However, theta and HFB exhibit asynchronous timing, raising the question of how results of local processing are communicated. Using intracranial EEG in patients performing a recognition memory task, we examined this coordination across medial temporal (MTL) and prefrontal (PFC) regions. HFB peaks occurred earlier in the MTL than in the PFC. Contrasting analyses were anchored either to these internally driven HFB peaks or to the external event of stimulus presentation. We discovered three key results. First, the role …

Enhancing The Acceptability Of Decision-Making System Using Xai Case: Crime Profiling System, Mohamed Saeed Al Shamsi

Theses

In the current world, we need to place more emphasis on how easily interpretable, accurate, and acceptable data analysis results are, given that essential operations in law enforcement, among other sectors, are backed up by the use of complex computing systems. Crime profiling systems that use crime data for profiling encounter major problems because they depend on algorithm-based methods. These methods can be ambiguous and inaccurate, leading to low public acceptability. The study investigates major problems with Complex Crime profiling systems (CPS) because their unexplained algorithms result in system performance issues and public scepticism. XAI provides a solution to handle …

The research utilizes a qualitative case study design through analyzing federal laws and national strategies, as well as institutional frameworks to understand how authority, coordination and meaning are organized in the UAE’s governance of extremism.

The results show that the UAE’s governance of extremism is characterized as a hybrid governance model with hierarchical …

Understanding Behavioral Patterns: A Case Study Of Emirati Ex-Offenders In United Arab Emirates, Salim Ali Al Naqbi Nov 2025

Understanding Behavioral Patterns: A Case Study Of Emirati Ex-Offenders In United Arab Emirates, Salim Ali Al Naqbi

Theses

Research on desistance has helped criminologists to better understand how people change their criminal identity and exercise personal choice. Yet in the UAE, these ideas has not often been applied to prisoners serving one or multiple offenses, even though incarceration and reoffending remain important social concerns. Because of this, desistance theory has not been fully used to study how rehabilitation is managed in UAE prisons, which means that some useful lessons may be missed. This study begins to close that gap by looking at the personal stories of 15 Emirati participants that were formerly incarcerated by adapting a qualitative and …

The Hcpo Way: Resolving Claims Through Cooperation, Anna Rubin Nov 2025

The Hcpo Way: Resolving Claims Through Cooperation, Anna Rubin

Fordham Law Review

The Nazi regime systematically stripped Jews and other persecuted groups of property through a framework of laws that gave their spoliation a veneer of legality. Postwar restitution programs, though groundbreaking in their efforts to provide individual victims with either compensation or the return of their property, were hampered by strict legal limitations, inconsistent procedures, and the slow pace of resolution. Contemporary restitution efforts increasingly recognize that legal avenues alone cannot fully redress these injustices. This Essay examines the work of the Holocaust Claims Processing Office (HCPO) of the New York State Department of Financial Services, which has developed a model …

Recalibrating Risk Under Dobbs, Yvonne Lindgren, Michelle Oberman Nov 2025

Recalibrating Risk Under Dobbs, Yvonne Lindgren, Michelle Oberman

Fordham Law Review

In response to mounting evidence of the devastating harms patients have experienced under abortion bans, abortion opponents and the Supreme Court of Texas have argued that the bans are clear but that doctors are willfully refusing to provide care. Instead of reforming the bans, they argue that doctors should be sued in medical malpractice for their failure to meet the standard of care. This Article interrogates that claim, investigating whether the crisis in reproductive healthcare that has resulted from delayed and denied care can be remedied by suing doctors. Specifically, can medical malpractice litigation provide guardrails against the erosion in …

When The Taxpayers Are Not Innocent: The Need For Punitive Damages Against Municipalities Under The Fair Housing Act, Charlotte Saltzman Nov 2025

When The Taxpayers Are Not Innocent: The Need For Punitive Damages Against Municipalities Under The Fair Housing Act, Charlotte Saltzman

Fordham Law Review

Combatting housing discrimination by municipalities is a core function of the Fair Housing Act (FHA). Courts disagree, however, as to whether punitive damages can be awarded against municipal defendants. The purpose of this Note is twofold. First, it compares the Second Circuit’s recent decision in Gilead Community Services, Inc. v. Town of Cromwell, which held that punitive damages were appropriate against the Town of Cromwell, with the reasoning of district courts that came to the opposite conclusion in reliance on § 1983 precedent. Second, notwithstanding the sufficiency of the statutory analysis, it evaluates the public policy concerns of awarding …

Domestic Inter-Sectorial Network Topological Evolution And Industrial Policy: A Comprehensive Network Analysis, Mahanad Ali Al Sabahi Nov 2025

Domestic Inter-Sectorial Network Topological Evolution And Industrial Policy: A Comprehensive Network Analysis, Mahanad Ali Al Sabahi

Dissertations

While controversial, industrial policy propose a compelling argument for the government role in stimulating economic growth. The “new industrial policy” approach proposes a shift from a “Why” to “How” should industrial policy be implemented. Building upon this, in line with the increased utilization of network theory in economic research, this research examines network analysis as an econometric diagnostic tool asking, “How network analysis could be utilized in understanding the domestic economy and designing industrial policy?”. The study utilizes country input-output tables to calculate centrality measures corresponding to different connectivity concepts, and explore the dependency between domestic industries. The research demonstrated …

Isolation And Characterization Of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria From Soils In The Uae And Their Effect On Plant Salt Tolerance, Layla Zayed Almazrouei

Theses

Plants are constantly challenged by environmental stresses that restrict their growth and productivity. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), soil salinity is a critical barrier to agriculture, particularly for tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), which is highly sensitive to moderate salinity levels (>2.5 dS m⁻¹). This study explored the potential of plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), especially actinobacteria, to enhance salt tolerance in tomato. The objective was to evaluate the effects of rhizosphere-competent (RC) and non-rhizosphere-competent (NRC) PGPR on plant physiology and yield in saline sandy soils. Actinobacterial strains were isolated from the tomato rhizosphere and screened to produce 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic …
