Knockout Of Perilipin-2 In Microglia Alters Lipid Droplet Accumulation And Response To Alzheimer’S Disease Stimuli, Isaiah O. Stephens, Lance A. Johnson
Knockout Of Perilipin-2 In Microglia Alters Lipid Droplet Accumulation And Response To Alzheimer’S Disease Stimuli, Isaiah O. Stephens, Lance A. Johnson
Physiology Faculty Publications
Highlights: What are the main findings? Knockout of Plin2 in microglia reduces lipid droplet burden, while enhancing phagocytic clearance capacity. Transcriptomic, bioenergetic, and lipidomic analyses reveal that loss of Plin2 reprograms microglial metabolism toward reduced TAG storage and improved mitochondrial resilience. What are the implications of the main findings? Plin2 serves as a key regulator of microglial lipid droplet stability, metabolic flexibility, and immune function under Alzheimer’s-relevant stressors. Targeting Plin2 may represent a therapeutic strategy to alleviate lipid droplet-driven dysfunction and restore microglial performance in aging and neurodegeneration. Lipid droplets (LDs) are emerging as key regulators of metabolism and inflammation, …

Cop30: A Climate Overview, Padraig O'Malley
New England Journal of Public Policy
This overview situates the accelerating climate crisis at a pivotal historical moment, as global emissions and political inaction converge ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil. Increasing heat is driving planetary instability, with cascading impacts such as sea level rise, droughts, wildfires, disease emergence, and permafrost thaw.
Despite pledges under the Paris Agreement and subsequent Glasgow Pact, most nations are far off track: 2024 marked the hottest year in recorded history, CO₂ reached 429 ppm by mid-2025, and fossil fuel combustion continues to rise. Under the Trump administration, the United States withdrew again from the Paris Agreement, dismantled environmental agencies, and …

From Margins To Mandates: The Ocean’S Emerging Role In Climate Law And Policy, Kilaparti Ramakrishna
New England Journal of Public Policy
For much of modern history, the ocean was treated as a boundless resource rather than as a living system central to planetary climate stability. Scientific advances over the past two decades have revealed the ocean’s indispensable role in regulating climate by absorbing more than 90 percent of excess heat and nearly a third of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. Yet this buffering capacity is eroding as unchecked greenhouse gas emissions drive warming, acidification, and sea level rise. Protecting ocean health has therefore become inseparable from stabilizing the climate, making ocean stewardship and climate action an indivisible imperative.
This article traces the evolution …

New England Journal of Public Policy
The 2030s will be decisive for adapting agriculture to hotter, drier, and more volatile climates, especially across arid and semi-arid regions from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to parts of the United States. We advance a pragmatic blueprint: pair water-smart infrastructure and nature-based systems with digital, genetic, and robotic innovations, and align them through policy that de-risks investment while protecting people and ecosystems. We position Australia as a global test bed, where enforceable basin rules, digital agronomy, targeted inputs/robotics, safe wastewater reuse, managed aquifer recharge (MAR), and emerging agrivoltaics (AV) have been validated as bundles rather than isolated …

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are widely used in electric vehicles (EVs) for their high energy density. However, their fire safety causes concerns because of the toxic gases emission and the challenge to extinguish. The type and quantity of toxic gases released during battery fires remain among the least studied hazards, with limited data available despite their serious health risks. This study examines the thermal and gaseous emission behavior of LIB cells after thermal runaway (TR). Five cell types, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP), Lithium Titanate (LTO), and three Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide (NMC). The three NMC variants share the same base …

Ai Empowerment Of Medical Libraries For Promoting Accessible Reading Of Evidence-Based Health Guidelines, Wenjing Ding
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In an age marked by overwhelming information and a rapidly aging global population, the need for accessible, comprehensible health information has never been more urgent. Although evidence-based health guidelines play a crucial role in supporting informed medical decision-making, their dense medical language and structural complexity often render them inaccessible to lay audiences. This study investigates the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enabling medical libraries to serve as dynamic platforms for promoting the accessible reading of such guidelines, thereby advancing public health literacy and equity.
A dual challenge emerges: on one hand, the expanding volume and sophistication of clinical …

Engineering education is at a critical juncture where supporting student mental health is essential for fostering persistence, equity, and the development of a resilient and innovative workforce. Yet, undergraduate engineering students experiencing mental health concerns are often unlikely to seek professional help. To identify factors that account for this gap in treatment, this project administered the Undergraduate Engineering Mental Health Help Seeking Instrument to 1903 engineering undergraduates across five institutions. Correlations and regression were used to examine the links between help-seeking intention and (a) help-seeking mechanisms (e.g., attitude, perceived norm, self-efficacy) and (b) beliefs about seeking help. Students’ personal evaluation …

Delayed echolalia, or the repetition of previously heard speech, is often observed in the expressive language of autistic children. Relatively little is known about how the production of delayed echolalia fits within the overall picture of autistic children’s language ability, including receptive language. To date, no empirical studies have tested autistic children’s comprehension of individual words within their delayed echoes. The present study aimed to establish proof-of-concept for a novel method of examining children’s comprehension of individual words that they produce in their own delayed echoes. Using natural language sampling combined with parent report, we identified instances of delayed echolalia …

Since issuing its 1968 landmark decision in Pickering, which first recognized that the First Amendment protects government employees' speech about matters of public concern, the US. Supreme Court has proceeded to whittle away First Amendment protections for government employees.
