Trunk Kinematics In The Sliding Forehand On Clay Courts: A Comparison Of Elite And Sub-Elite Tennis Players, Kai-Lung Chang, Wen-Tzu Tang, Tsung-Yu Huang, Zi-Jun Lin, Cheng-Yi Hsiao

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study compares the trunk kinematics of elite and sub-elite male tennis players during the sliding forehand stroke on clay courts. A total of 24 highly skilled players participated in this study. Their stroke execution was recorded using a 3D high-speed infrared motion capture system. Independent sample t-tests (p < 0.05) were used to compare trunk kinematics between groups. Elite players outperformed their sub-elite counterparts across all measured points, including greater right lateral bending at the Ground Contact and End Backswing points, enhanced anterior tilt at the Impact and Racket Extension points, and superior left lateral bending at the Completion of Swing point. Additionally, their greater maximum trunk displacement reflects superior trunk control and movement efficiency throughout the stroke sequence. This study underscores the importance of trunk rotational control and sliding techniques in optimizing forehand performance on clay courts.

Within-Session Variability In Treadmill Running Mechanics In Team Sport Athletes, Claire Chaisson, Brian Hanley, Dan Weaving, Stacey Emmonds

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study investigated within-session variability in treadmill running mechanics during repeated same-day runs across multiple speeds, with a secondary aim to assess how these mechanics changed with speed. Eleven team sport athletes (9 M, 2 F; 25.0 ± 3.2 years) completed three trials of 30-s treadmill runs at 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 km/h. The coefficient of variation (CV%) for step length (2.7 to 1.7%, β = -0.10, p = 0.004) and flight time (7.9 to 4.3%, β = -0.41, p < 0.001) decreased with speed, indicating greater consistency. Step length (β = 0.068), step rate (β = 0.054), flight time (β = 3.69) and horizontal work (β = 0.026) increased with speed, and contact time (β = –9.86), duty factor (β = –0.008) and vertical work (β = –0.041) decreased. These findings suggest movement patterns become more consistent at higher speeds.

Acl Injury-Related Kinematic Assessment: A Preliminary Study To Compare Marker-Based, Wearable, And Markerless Systems, Claudia Brunetti, Filippo Bertozzi, Pietro Maver, Marco Palombi, Matilde Santini, Manuela Galli, Marco Tarabini

ISBS Proceedings Archive

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries often occur in non-contact situations, highlighting the need for effective risk assessment tools. This study compared kinematic outcomes of IMUs (Xsens), markerless (OpenCap) and an optoelectronic system (OMS) – considered the gold standard - in drop jumps with change of direction. Knee and hip sagittal and frontal plane kinematics were recorded concurrently with all three systems in a total of 260 trials. Xsens showed high validity for knee flexion (R2=0.81, RMSE2=0.00), limiting its use in ACL injury prevention research. OpenCap had weaker agreement with OMS (i.e., for knee flexion R2=0.76, RMSE=7.6°) …

Bridging The Gap Between Research And Practice: Integrating Biomechanical Analysis In The Development Of Landing Mats In Gymnastics., Pavel Brtva, Bethany Canty, Rebecca Straker, Gareth Irwin, Roman Farana

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study examined variations in vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) and lower limb kinematics during landings on three different mat structures (TYPE1, TYPE2, TYPE3) compared to FIG mat in young unskilled (pupils) and gymnast’s female. Significant effects of mat type were observed for VGRFmax, time to VGRFmax, peak ankle and knee angles, and peak knee angular velocity. TYPE1 mats exhibited the highest VGRF and shortest time to peak, indicating inadequate force attenuation and potential injury risk. Gymnasts demonstrated lower VGRFmax and lower ankle flexion, likely due to landing technique. No significant differences between TYPE2, TYPE3, …

A Novel Pathway To Characterise Footballs For Finite Element Analysis, Megan J. Barnes-Wood, Henrique Ramos, Rafael Santiago, Peter Theobald

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study developed a method to characterise materials used in football manufacture for finite element analysis. Quasi-static (0.1/s) and dynamic (10/s and 100/s) uniaxial testing on a FIFA Quality Programme approved football generated hyperelastic material coefficients. Dynamic mechanical analysis was utilised to create Prony series coefficients to inform the viscoelastic behaviour. The model was validated by comparing finite element simulations with experimental data, focusing on dynamic properties including coefficient of restitution, maximum deformation, and contact time. Results indicated a strong correlation, with RMSE between 0.0051 and 10.4310, particularly at 0.8 bar pressure, demonstrating the model’s efficacy for high-strain impacts. This …

The Effect Of The Eyes-Closed Condition On Muscle Activation, Ground Reaction Force, And 3d Kinematics In Countermovement Jumps, Nada Juma Aldous, Paul Grimshaw Nov 2025

The Effect Of The Eyes-Closed Condition On Muscle Activation, Ground Reaction Force, And 3d Kinematics In Countermovement Jumps, Nada Juma Aldous, Paul Grimshaw

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study investigates the effects of the eyes-closed condition on lower limb muscle activation, ground reaction force, and three-dimensional kinematics during repeated countermovement jumps in healthy young male adults. Data were collected in a controlled laboratory setting using a force platform, 3D motion capture, and wireless electromyography. The results offer insight into the interplay between sensory re-weighting and motor control under altered visual conditions. While key performance parameters remain largely consistent between eyes-open and eyes-closed trials, subtle differences in joint kinematics suggest compensatory adaptations may occur. These findings contribute to a better understanding of sensory integration in dynamic motor tasks …

Resonant Breathwork As Multimodal Vagal–Interoceptive Modulation: An Empirical Synthesis Of Non-Invasive Vns, Breathing-Driven Interoception And Respiratory Tools, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

Resonant Breathwork is proposed as a layered, measurable intervention that modulates vagal activity and interoceptive processing through acoustic vocalization, respiratory mechanics, and biofeedback. This review synthesizes human empirical studies from 2022–2025 across five domains: (1) noninvasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation and acoustic or vocal vagal engagement; (2) interoception targets modulated by breathing; (3) respiratory rehabilitation tools, including oscillatory positive expiratory pressure and inspiratory muscle training; (4) virtual or augmented reality breath biofeedback; and (5) neuroimaging of high ventilation breathwork with music. Evidence shows taVNS can acutely increase vagal indices, with effects contingent on frequency and pulse width, while paced …

The Relationship Between Sex Guilt And Sex Anxiety On Sexual Function In Sexually Active Adult Women, Mia Audina Olivia, Ahmad Naufalul Umam

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Sexuality is a deeply ingrained aspect of human identity and experience, and its importance can vary greatly from person to person and across different cultures and contexts. There is a widely accepted perspective in sexual behavior research that western women have more flexible sexual norms and thus function better than women from eastern cultural background. Meanwhile, research in eastern countries often only focused on health matters and bounded to abstinence-centred moral value. This study addresses this gap by investigating the intricate relationship between sex guilt, sex anxiety, and sexual function among sexually active adult women in Indonesia. A sample of …

Factors Influencing Flourishing In Autoimmune Patients: A Systematic Review, Amherstia Pasca Rina, Endang R. Surjaningrum

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This scoping literature review aimed to identify factors that influence flourishing and to synthesize gaps in previous studies that flourishing is not only influenced by the internal factor but how the social conditions individuals live in can also affect flourishing. Autoimmune diseases are incurable and associated with mental health conditions that can exacerbate the intensity of recurrence, so it is necessary to take protective measures, namely flourishing as a form of behavioral management of chronic diseases. The prevalence of autoimmune patients who are declared flourishing is relatively small, but flourishing is actually a psychological concept that is needed by everyone …

Insecticide Resistance Profile In Nashville Culex Spp. Mosquito Populations, Ellie Sebaugh, Zachary Bement, Abelardo Moncayo, Darlene Panvini Nov 2025

Insecticide Resistance Profile In Nashville Culex Spp. Mosquito Populations, Ellie Sebaugh, Zachary Bement, Abelardo Moncayo, Darlene Panvini

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Mosquitoes may develop resistance to insecticides used by control programs, potentially increasing population density and the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Culex spp. mosquitos are the primary vector of West Nile Virus (WNV), the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States and a reportable disease in Tennessee. Resistance profiles were constructed for two insecticides, permethrin and malathion, in a Culex spp. population from Nashville, Tennessee. Adult female mosquitoes were live-captured using gravid traps and tested using the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) bioassay protocol to assess resistance or susceptibility. Three inhibitors were also included to identify metabolic …
