Relationship Between Swimming Velocity And Foot Kinematic Characteristics In Novice Breaststroke Swimmers, Hiroshi Suito, Keisuke Teramoto, Kazumasa Ozeki
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The study aimed to examine the relationship between the swimming velocity (SV) and the kinematic characteristics of the foot in novice breaststroke swimmers. Six novice male swimmers participated in the study. Participants performed two prone 10 m breaststroke kick trials on a kickboard. The kicking movements were recorded with two synchronized underwater cameras, and a three-dimensional analysis of the right-side kicking motion was conducted. The results revealed that significant negative correlations were found between the SV during a single breaststroke kick cycle and both the longitudinal and lateral kick widths (r = -.943, P < 0.01; r = -.886, P < 0.05). Moreover, a significant correlation was observed between the internal rotation angle of ankle joint in the insweep phase and SV (r = .886, P < 0.05), These findings suggest …

Running-Induced Fatigue Increases Coordination Variability, Regardless Of Running Ability, Zak J.M Sheehy, Adrian R Rivadulla, Ezio Preatoni
ISBS Proceedings Archive
We examined the effect of fatigue on lower limb coordination variability (CV) and its relationship with running ability. Fifty recreational runners (♀= 25; 18-50 years) ran on a treadmill, at a speed 5% faster than their lactate threshold, until volitional exhaustion. Three-dimensional kinematic data were collected, and CV for sagittal hip-knee and knee-ankle couplings was calculated. One-dimensional repeated measures analysis via Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) revealed that CV increased in mid-stance and throughout swing in the final part of the run. Changes in CV were not predicted by VO2peak or 10 km performance, suggesting that the findings are …

Expertise And Coordination In Show Jumping: Investigating Lumbar Motion, Nolwenn Régnault, Agnès Olivier, Nicolas Bideau
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of expertise on the coordination between the rider and their horse during the approach and reception phases in show jumping. Sixteen riders, divided into two groups (professionals, n=8; amateurs, n=8), performed a show jumping task while their movements were recorded using IMUs (XSens MVN) placed on them and on their horse’s sternum. The rider’s lumbar orientation (L3) and the horse’s sternum orientation were analysed to quantify coordination using continuous relative phase (CRP). Statistical analysis using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) highlighted significant expertise-related differences at specific moments within the stride cycle. …

Immediate Effect Of Handle Use On A New Swimming Starting Block, Kazumasa Ozeki, Shummei Ichikawa, Hiroshi Suito, Shinji Sakurai
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to compare kinematic variables between the handle start (using a starting block equipped with handles) and the kick start (without a handle) in male competitive swimmers and assess the immediate effects of adopting the handle start. Eight high school swimmers participated. Each participant performed two trials for each start type after two practice trials. Hand-release time, block time, 15-m time, attitude angles, and horizontal velocity were measured using two video cameras. Paired two-sample t-tests and effect size analyses were conducted to compare these variables. The 15-m time was significantly longer in the handle-start …

The Effect Of (Acceleration-Deceleration) Exercise Whith Moderate Intensity In Small Spaces On The Strength Of Hamstrings In Football Players, Kamel Nettah, Abdelkader Belkheir, Rabah Seghiri, Derradji Aroussi
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of acceleration-deceleration exercise in small spaces on the strength of the hamstring muscle and ideally prevent it from a possible injury. A significant number of previous studies have shown that the negative effect of exercises using acceleration and deceleration on hamstring injury is due to the maximum use of intensity. Instead, in this study we have used moderate intensity in small spaces. on The idea was that acceleration-deceleration exercises have the same mechanism of contraction(contracting and extending) with strength training despite the different way they function, and through that development …

Biomechanical Analysis Of Elite Javelin Thrower Of Pakistan, Muhammad Tahir Nazeer Dr, Muhammad Ahmad Tahir, Rabia Walee
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated the biomechanical factors influencing javelin throwing performance among elite Pakistani athletes. Eight national-level male throwers were analyzed using 3D motion capture during the 2024 National Athletics Championships. Key variables included release velocity components, approach run velocity, pull distance, and phase durations. Results showed that vertical release velocity and approach run velocity at right foot touchdown (R-on) were significantly correlated with throwing distance (r = 0.672, p < .05 and r = 0.596, p < .05, respectively). No significant correlations were observed for pull distance, step length, or phase durations. Findings suggest that elite performance relies on maximizing vertical release while maintaining sufficient horizontal speed, emphasizing the importance of individualized technical training in Pakistan’s javelin development programs.

The Effect Of Baseball Bat Diameter On Batted Ball, Hirotaka Nakashima
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of bat diameter on the batted ball characteristics in baseball. A custom-made bat swing machine swung bat horizontally and hit a ball floating in the air using wind pressure. Three bats of different diameter (6.30 cm, 5.73 cm, and 5.32 cm) were used with 30 trials per bat. Three high-speed video cameras were used to record the movements of the bat and ball near the impact and compared the batted ball characteristics. As a result, bat diameter did not appear to have a significant effect on batted balls.

Estimation Of The Ground Reaction Forces During Golf Swing Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Kanji Mori
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Accurate ground reaction force (GRF) measurement is essential for in-depth golf swing analysis, but force plates are costly and require complex installation. This study develops an AI-based GRF estimation method using a Bi-LSTM model. Motion capture and force plate data from 1,032 swings by 344 golfers were used to train the model, while data from 29 unseen golfers were reserved for validation to prevent overfitting. A total of 864 models were trained using cross-validation and grid search, with the best-performing model selected based on ICC. The model achieved high accuracy (ICC up to 0.983), particularly for lead foot vertical GRF. …

Wearable IMUs offer a promising alternative to lab-based motion capture for sports biomechanics. Accurate foot contact detection (FCD) is crucial, yet most algorithms are validated for daily activities, leaving a gap in high-dynamic movements, such as sprints and changes of direction, which are linked to injury risk. This study (I) reviews FCD algorithms for such tasks and (II) develops a new IMU-based algorithm for detecting initial contact (IC) and toe-off (TO). The review highlighted limitations in sport-specific FCD solutions. Two algorithms using Pelvis Vertical Velocity (PVV) and Resultant Foot Acceleration (RFA) were tested on 302 trials. A hybrid approach combining …
Formation Of Coordination Among Release Parameters For The Shape Of Variability In Arrival Positions Over Practice, Ryota Matsuda, Jun Umakoshi, Arata Kimura
Formation Of Coordination Among Release Parameters For The Shape Of Variability In Arrival Positions Over Practice, Ryota Matsuda, Jun Umakoshi, Arata Kimura
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study aims to propose a framework for analyzing coordination among release parameters in relation to the shape of variability in performance outcomes and to investigate how such coordination is formed through practice. Participants threw 60 darts toward the center of the dartboard, twice a week for 10 weeks. Intersection over Union (IoU) was used to quantify coordination for the shape of variability, and a threshold was established to define the presence of coordination. The results showed that coordination among release parameters was not necessarily developed through practice, and that such coordination may already be structured before reducing the magnitude …

Shoulder Kinematics Of Overhead Throwing In Male Professional And Semi-Professional Cricketers, Jordan Leondiris Mr., Janine Gray Dr., Megan Dutton Dr., Yumna Albertus Associate Prof.
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Throwing in sports is one of the most aggressive and vigorous actions performed by the upper extremity. The purpose of this study was to investigate overhead throwing shoulder kinematics between two different throwing approaches in cricket, throwing from a static versus dynamic position following a run-up. The study sample included twenty (N=20) male professional/semi-professional cricketers. Shoulder kinematic variables were investigated during two different throwing approaches. Dynamic throwing produced significantly greater ball velocity than static throwing. However, shoulder internal rotation velocities at ball release showed no significant differences across static versus dynamic conditions and shoulder kinematics remained largely consistent, except for …

ISBS Proceedings Archive
Although judo carries a high risk of head injuries, primarily due to throws, empirical data on head impact characteristics during sparring practice remains limited. This study examined differences between males and females in head impact frequency and magnitude among collegiate judo practitioners. Nine athletes were monitored using mouthguard-type inertial sensors to measure head linear and rotational accelerations during practice. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) estimated that head impact frequency was higher in female practitioners (10.9 impacts/hour; 95% CI: 4.8–25.0) compared to males (3.7 impacts/hour; 95% CI: 1.4–9.5; rate ratio: 2.96, p = 0.09). In contrast, model-estimated peak linear acceleration (PLA) …
Biomechanical Analysis Of Standing Long Jump For Different Focus Of Attention, Arata Kimura
Biomechanical Analysis Of Standing Long Jump For Different Focus Of Attention, Arata Kimura
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine the kinematics of the center of mass (COM) under varying attentional focus conditions during the standing long jump. Participants performed jumps under three focus conditions: control, internal focus, and external focus. The findings showed no statistically significant differences in jump distances across conditions. However, for most participants, the shortest jump distance was not observed under the external focus condition. The number of participants who showed the shortest jump distance in the external focus condition was 1 out of 14. These results suggest that external focus of attention can prevent poor jump performance …

Characterizing Cardiac-Locomotion Synchronization And Heart Rate/Gait Cycle Fluctuations: A Pilot Study, Minato Kawaguchi, Kousuke Meguro, Kentaro Takahashi
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated cardiac-locomotion synchronization (CLS) during indoor treadmill and outdoor free walking, examining its environmental differences and relationships with heart rate/gait rhythm variability. Twelve participants used wearable ECG and accelerometer sensors for data collection during self-paced brisk walking. We analysed the last 10 minutes of stable walking, calculating mean period, coefficient of variation, and detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) slope α. CLS was quantified by the 'Sync rate', the temporal proportion of consistent gait cycle to R-R interval ratios. Results showed significantly higher Sync rates in outdoor walking. Outdoor gait rhythm fluctuation α tended to decrease with increased Sync rate. …

The Stability Of Variability – Multiday Reliability Of Sample Entropy In Submaximal Hop And Strength Tasks In Elite Athletes, Daniel Kadlec, Jake Cowin, Kat Daniels, Matthew J Jordan, Matt Miller-Dicks, Shayne Vial, Sophia Nimphius
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to determine the multiday reliability in submaximal continuous hops and submaximal isometric squats from the ground reaction force signals. Twelve elite team-sport athletes completed submaximal isometric squats at 40% and 60% of their maximal voluntary isometric contraction and submaximal continuous hopping at 2 Hz, 2.5 Hz, and a self-selected frequency for 30 s, respectively, over four sessions. Sample entropy was calculated from the force-time data. Good-to-excellent reliability (ICC2,k > 0.75) was observed for submaximal hopping frequencies (Hop2.0, Hop2.5) following one session and for isometric squats at 60% MVIC from the initial session. These data …

Simulating The Effect Of Measurement Error On Stride Time Detrended Fluctuation Analysis, Ben D. M. Jones, David L. Carey, Jon Wheat, Kane Middleton, Ben Heller
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to investigate the sensitivity of running stride time detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) to simulated noise and the impact of noise on reliability measures. Varying magnitudes of Gaussian and uniform noise were added to series of touchdown event timings from 11 runners. DFA-α were calculated for ground truth and simulated stride time series. Simulated series were paired and test-retest ICC estimates computed. The error in DFA-α increased with noise magnitude, with stride time series transitioning from persistent to anti-persistent behaviour for greater magnitudes of noise. However, median ICC estimates stayed above 0.95 for all standard …

This pilot study examined the validity of a wearable VBT device for measuring peak velocity, force, and power during vertical medicine ball throws. Two participants each performed nine throws while wearing the device, and a single high-speed camera tracked only the medicine ball. Velocity and power were computed from ball position using video-based analysis. The VBT device showed strong correlations for velocity (r = 0.945, bias = –2.01 ± 1.17 m/s) and force (r = 0.969, bias = –64.16 ± 28.31 N), but power showed a weak correlation (r = 0.150, bias = 277.8 ± 337.1 W) and high variability. …
Comparison Of Segmental Dynamics Between Soccer Side Volley Kick And Instep Kick, Tsuyoshi Iitake, Hiroyuki Nunome Prof.
Comparison Of Segmental Dynamics Between Soccer Side Volley Kick And Instep Kick, Tsuyoshi Iitake, Hiroyuki Nunome Prof.
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The present study aimed to clarify differences in segmental dynamics between the side-volley kick and the instep kick in soccer. Three-dimensional lower body motion (500 Hz) was captured during both types of kicks of twenty male soccer players. Joint angular velocities, resultant joint torque and interaction torque due to joint reaction forces of the kicking leg were computed using inverse dynamics. Statistical Parametric Mapping was used to compare these time-series changes. Despite the side-volley kick generating significantly smaller hip flexion torque than the instep kick, the hip joint angular velocity of the side-volley kick was comparable to that of the …
Plantar Fascia Stiffness Accounts For Individual Variance In Its Strain During Hopping At Different Frequencies In Females, Ayaka Hobo, Hiroto Shiotani, Kosuke Hirata, Hiyo Inaba, Natsuki Sado
Plantar Fascia Stiffness Accounts For Individual Variance In Its Strain During Hopping At Different Frequencies In Females, Ayaka Hobo, Hiroto Shiotani, Kosuke Hirata, Hiyo Inaba, Natsuki Sado
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The plantar fascia (PF) behaves like a spring during bouncing gait, whereas its strain is a potential risk factor for plantar fasciitis. PF strain in bouncing gait is determined theoretically by complex foot dynamics, involving numerous active and passive foot structures, but the determinants of its individual variability remain unclear. Here we show the high relevance of PF stiffness to its strain in hopping by 11 females. PF stiffness, assessed as shear wave velocity, correlates with peak PF strain in hopping at different frequencies (1.8, 2.6, 3.4 Hz). The variance accounted for increases with increasing hopping frequency (from 49 to …

Assessing The Impact Reduction Capabilities Of Gamebreaker Softshell Headgear In Drop Tests, Annette G. Heward-Swale, George Stilwell, Nick Draper, Natalia Kabaliuk
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Softshell headgear is marketed to reduce head impact intensity in contact sports like rugby; however, evidence supporting this remains limited. This study investigated whether selected headgear models, GameBreaker-Pro, a novel GameBreaker-Prototype and a World Rugby (WR) Law 4 approved headgear, attenuate impact intensity under controlled drop test conditions. Peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak rotational acceleration (PRA), and peak rotational velocity (PRV) were measured on a Hybrid III headform fitted with this headgear. Drop tests were conducted from 15-60 cm at five head impact orientations. All headgear reduced impact kinematics relative to the bare headform. GameBreaker headgear achieved 14-22% greater reductions …

Interaction Between The Midsole And Plate In Running Shoes Modifies The Energy Strategy Of The Mtp Joint During Running, Soo-Ji Han, Jusung Lee, Sanghyuk Han, Seongjun Kim, Jongchul Park
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This study investigated biomechanical differences of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint according to midsole materials (EVA, PEBA) and carbon plate insertion. Ten male runners performed overground running at 3.89 m/s (±5%) under four footwear conditions. Discrete outcome variables included active and critical stiffness (Kactive, Kcr), push-off time, peak propulsion force, and MTP power transition timing, while statistical nonparametric mapping (SnPM) was applied to joint power. PEBA without a plate did not provide a propulsion advantage but reduced energy loss and enabled more effective joint control than EVA. In contrast, the addition of a plate to EVA facilitated a faster roll-off with …

Males and females exhibit comparable explosive relative to maximal strength. Given the greater proportion of type I fibres area in female muscles, motor units discharge rate (MUDR) in explosive efforts may be higher to compensate for slower contractile properties. To verify this, 22 females and 12 males (20-34 y), performed 10 rapid isometric ankle dorsiflexors, while recording high-density electromyography from tibialis anterior. Relative rate of torque development (RTD) measures (normalised to maximal torque) in the first 150 ms from contraction onset were not different (P > 0.07) between sexes, nor MUDR at the beginning of the explosive efforts (61 ± …

The purpose of the present pilot study was to validate the timing and position accuracy of the centre of mass (COM) during a replicative snowboarding training session using a previously validated motion capture system (Simi Motion®) and a mobile markerless monocular motion capture application (SPLYZA Motion). The positional timing of the two-dimensional (2D) COM motion between the two systems were validated in an indoor laboratory condition as two elite snowboarders performed three individual movements, namely a static (isometric) pose as a proxy method for ground truth validation followed by a vertical jump and a single rotation. The position of the …

Changes In Walking Performance Under Dual Task Conditions Across Pregnancy – A Case Study, Nikola Chmura, Wanda Forczek-Karkosz
ISBS Proceedings Archive
In recent years there is a growing literature on the walking pattern during pregnancy in the context of preventing falls as pregnancy progresses (Błaszczyk et al. 2016). The study examines the impact of pregnancy on walking under dual-task conditions. A 27-year-old participant was assessed in her first and third trimester for gait parameters and cognitive function changes. Results showed slower walking speed, prolonged double support phase, and a wider base of support, especially when performing an additional task. The DIVA test revealed impaired attention and increased errors.Findings highlight the effect of cognitive load on stability in pregnant women, potentially increasing …
