Henry Norman Bethune: Controversial Canadian Vs. Bia Qui En: Chinese Model Cadre, Ashley Schepis Nov 2025

Henry Norman Bethune: Controversial Canadian Vs. Bia Qui En: Chinese Model Cadre, Ashley Schepis

The Graduate Review

Canadian thoracic surgeon Dr. Norman Bethune is known for his dichotomous legacy in Canada and China. In China, Bethune is remembered as a model cadre, a foreigner who died for the Chinese Communist cause. In 1938 Bethune travelled to China to prove his loyalty to the communist cause and be a part of something bigger. Bethune’s medical inventions and ideas, such as mobile blood transfusions left a lasting impression on the Chinese medical system, yet he did not become a household name until the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. Mao Zedong used Bethune as a martyr in propaganda which resulted …

Engaged Employees Deliver Returns: Evidence On Financial Performance From Spain, Carlos Gomez-Mugica Nov 2025

Engaged Employees Deliver Returns: Evidence On Financial Performance From Spain, Carlos Gomez-Mugica

Engaged Management ReView

Does investing in your employees create long-term value? Although many firms pursue employee-focused policies, studies show little agreement on which specific dimensions of employee satisfaction yield sustainable financial performance. Building on Edmans (2011), who linked employee satisfaction to superior stock performance in the United States, this study turns to the Spanish market. Using 15 years of data from Actualidad Económica—Spain’s most recognized benchmark for employee satisfaction—we apply Herzberg’s (1968) two-factor theory to distinguish between motivators, such as sense of belonging, talent management, and training, and hygiene factors, like compensation and work environment. Applying a Carhart (1997) four-factor model, we find …

Focal Constrictive Pericarditis, An Unusual Cause For Biventricular Failure, Farhan Parachikkottil, Harikishore U, Shijoy P, Sajeer Kalathingathodika, Krishnakumar Prabhakaran, Kader Muneer

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

A 34 year old male who had undergone surgical closure of a ventricular septal defect at the age of 4 years, after a long asymptomatic period, presented with heart failure and was diagnosed with atrial flutter and biventricular dysfunction. Chest X-ray showed a band-like calcification in the atrioventricular groove. Echocardiography revealed dilated atria, focal calcification with constriction at the atrioventricular groove, and biventricular systolic dysfunction. Focal constrictive pericarditis occurring in post-cardiac surgery patients is very rare. Here we report a case of focal variant of constrictive pericarditis manifesting in a young male after 3 decades of ventricular septal defect repair.

Pearl Buck’S Humanitarian Vision In War And Peace, David M. Crowe

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

"Eurasia, that vast continental region that encompasses Europe and Asia, was a tablet for many of Pearl S. Buck’s works and campaigns for human rights and international efforts to improve the human condition globally. Though she is principally known for her works on China, some scholars, while acknowledging that her novels were principally for an American female audience, gave little attention to her significant body of non-fictional works on a variety of subjects on America and East Asia. I made my first trip to China in the summer of 1985 via the Trans-Siberian Railroad and Mongolia to Beijing."

The Head-Direction Signal Is Generated From Two Types Of Head Direction Cells In Brainstem Nuclei, Ryan M. Yoder Nov 2025

The Head-Direction Signal Is Generated From Two Types Of Head Direction Cells In Brainstem Nuclei, Ryan M. Yoder

Psychology

Head direction (HD) cells discharge based on an animal's directional heading. Computational models propose that a ring-attractor network across the connections between the lateral mammillary (LMN) and dorsal tegmental nuclei (DTN) underlies the signal's generation. These models contain neurons that encode either HD or angular head velocity (AHV), but also require cells that are sensitive to both parameters conjunctively (HD + AHV). Here we identify both types of HD cells in the LMN and DTN of female rats, with one population sensitive to AHV (both symmetric and asymmetric), and the other population insensitive to AHV. Notably, many HD + AHV …

The Perceptions Of Foster Care Alumni Who Are Recipients Of Pandemic Aid, Ashley Robinson Nov 2025

The Perceptions Of Foster Care Alumni Who Are Recipients Of Pandemic Aid, Ashley Robinson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic heightened challenges for young adults transitioning from foster care to independence. Research shows that foster care alumni faced barriers in education, employment, housing, and health due to limited support networks. Yet, little is known about how emergency policies, such as the Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA) of 2021, affected them. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of foster care alumni who received financial aid through the Act. The research question: What were the experiences and perceptions of foster care alumni (aged 18-26) who received funds via the CAA of 2021 during …

A Data-Efficient Approach For Monitoring And Modeling Stream Nutrients, Wasif Bin Mamoon Nov 2025

A Data-Efficient Approach For Monitoring And Modeling Stream Nutrients, Wasif Bin Mamoon

Dissertations (1934 -)

Streams and rivers with excessive nutrients can compromise aquatic ecosystems, human health, and overall water resources. Precise, high-resolution measurements of nutrient concentrations are essential for pollution management programs; however, conventional monitoring methods frequently face limitations due to cost and sample restrictions. This dissertation aimed to advance the existing state-of-the-science nutrient monitoring and modeling approaches to reduce sampling requirements and model complexity. First, this study estimated the dimensionality and predictability of nutrient signals (NOx and TP signals), that describe the nutrient dynamics. The findings showed that nutrient data can be forecasted accurately for 1 to 5.5 months. Most of the signals …

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project Staff Education To Close A Knowledge Gap Regarding Restraints, Aaron Ross Ledbetter Nov 2025

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project Staff Education To Close A Knowledge Gap Regarding Restraints, Aaron Ross Ledbetter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this Executive Summary is to address a gap in knowledge that I attempted to close regarding restraint utilization. Restraints, both physical and chemical, have been prevalent over the past ten years and with their increased utilization during the pandemic which has continued post-pandemic. Nursing as a culture has become more reliant on restraints as it allows more time for nurses to provide care elsewhere. Both physical and psychological complications have been recognized during the utilization of physical restraints. Their prominence, although helpful with time constraints for nurses, have shown to negatively impact the patients who they are …

Staff Education To Improve Medicare Lung Cancer Screening And Processes, Ashley Mccammon Nov 2025

Staff Education To Improve Medicare Lung Cancer Screening And Processes, Ashley Mccammon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The doctoral project was a staff education initiative to address underutilization of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening among Medicare-eligible patients at the project site. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, and LDCT screening reduces mortality by up to 20%. Internal data from the project site revealed that only 20.13% of eligible patients completed screening, underscoring the need for structured staff education to improve knowledge and support early detection. The practice focused question asked: Will a staff education on Medicare LDCT screening and processes increase staff knowledge towards the ultimate goal of increasing LDCT screening rates? …

Feasibility And Utility Of Ai-Triggered Prompts For Efficiently Capturing When And Why People Experience Stress In Natural Environments, Sameer Neupane Nov 2025

Feasibility And Utility Of Ai-Triggered Prompts For Efficiently Capturing When And Why People Experience Stress In Natural Environments, Sameer Neupane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Advances in wearables and AI enable real-time stress detection for JITAI, yet long-term stress reduction remains difficult because interventions must align with the underlying stressors. Traditional methods like annual or end-of-day surveys miss many stressors due to recall bias or participant burden. AI-triggered prompts offer a timely and low-burden alternative for capturing real-world stressors as they occur. To demonstrate the feasibility of using AI-triggered prompts for real-time stressor capture, we conducted the MOODS Study, a 100-day field study with 122 participants wearing smartwatches equipped with a pre-trained stress model. When physiological stress events ended, participants were prompted to log their …

Queens, Care, And Creativity: Exploring The Expressions Of Othermothering By African American Girls, Lischa Tshoiya Brooks Nov 2025

Queens, Care, And Creativity: Exploring The Expressions Of Othermothering By African American Girls, Lischa Tshoiya Brooks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study explores othermothering as a cultural and political practice among African American girls in Memphis, Tennessee. While most scholarship on othermothering centers the voices of adult women, this research foregrounds the perspectives of African American girls, illuminating how they interpret and experience the influence of othermothers on their identity formation. Guided by Black Feminist Thought, Africana Womanism, and arts-based inquiry, the study situates othermothering as a theoretical framework that is both intimate and political by nurturing personal growth while resisting deficit narratives that marginalize Black girlhood. Data were collected through a creative workshop, Walk Like a Queen Crown Workshop, …

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The aim of this research is to contribute to the documentation of Lomongo, a Bantu language spoken in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In this study, we focused on two morphological aspects of medicinal plant names in Lomongo: nominal morphology and morpho-syntax. To collect data, we engaged with two categories of informants: primary informants (traditional healers) and secondary informants (native Lomongo speakers). Ethnobotanical and ethnolinguistic surveys were conducted in the “Elandisha” Mavaolo area through participant observation, semi-structured interview guides, audio recordings, and photographs. The plants identified were documented in situ with the assistance of botanists from "Matiti-Lisanga," an interdisciplinary …

Beyond Money: Early Asset-Building Policy Supports Mothers, Strengthens Families, And Builds Children’S Futures, Jin Huang, Michael Sherraden, Margaret Clancy, Lissa Johnson

Center for Social Development Research

To foster stronger futures for children and families in the United States, policymakers and researchers are increasingly turning their attention to early-life asset-building policies, recognizing that such policies are vital components of family well-being and support. In this brief, CSD researchers discuss evidence from the SEED for Oklahoma Kids experiment (SEED OK), which shows that Child Development Account policy shapes mothers, families, and children in profound ways. Child Development Accounts, they conclude, represent a scalable and bipartisan family-support policy, offering early and automatic foundation that reinforces parental hopes and planning while promoting both equity, through progressively structured design, and responsibility, …
