Judicial Climate Governance: Corporate Purpose And The Courts, Hassan M. Ahmad, Ahmed R. Chowdhury Nov 2025

Judicial Climate Governance: Corporate Purpose And The Courts, Hassan M. Ahmad, Ahmed R. Chowdhury

All Papers

With the existential threat of climate change, there is increased attention about the corporation's duty to maintain a healthy environment, particularly in light of the conventional shareholder primacy model of corporate purpose. This article proposes the idea of judicial climate governance. In the absence of robust legislative reforms that would obligate corporations to mitigate and even eliminate their inordinate climate impacts, in climate change litigation courts can and should render liability and compensation decisions that direct corporations towards a more stakeholder-friendly model of corporate purpose. To substantiate the need for judicial climate governance, this article canvasses and contextualizes the historical …

Relink: Edge Activation For Closed Network Influence Maximization Via Deep Reinforcement Learning, Shivvrat Arya, Smita Ghosh, Bryan Maruyama, Venkatesh Srinivasan Nov 2025

Relink: Edge Activation For Closed Network Influence Maximization Via Deep Reinforcement Learning, Shivvrat Arya, Smita Ghosh, Bryan Maruyama, Venkatesh Srinivasan

Mathematics and Computer Science

Influence Maximization aims to select a subset of elements in a social network to maximize information spread under a diffusion model. While existing work primarily focuses on selecting influential nodes, these approaches assume unrestricted message propagation-an assumption that fails in closed social networks, where content visibility is constrained and node-level activations may be infeasible. Motivated by the growing adoption of privacy-focused platforms such as Signal, Discord, Instagram, and Slack, our work addresses the following fundamental question: How can we learn effective edge activation strategies for influence maximization in closed networks? To answer this question we introduce Reinforcement Learning for Link …

Correcting Class Imbalance Through Synthetic Training Data And 3d Modeling For Carabid Pitfall Trap Sampling, Blair Mirka Nov 2025

Correcting Class Imbalance Through Synthetic Training Data And 3d Modeling For Carabid Pitfall Trap Sampling, Blair Mirka

Geography ETDs

Crowdsourced biodiversity data provide an accessible foundation for large-scale ecological monitoring, but class imbalance limits automated species identification, particularly for rare taxa. This research explores the use of synthetic training data generated from 3D models of carabid beetle museum specimens to improve detection and classification performance for underrepresented species in crowdsourced datasets. High-resolution 3D models were created to simulate variation in lighting, orientation, and background. These synthetic images were incorporated into convolutional neural network training datasets at varying synthetic-to-real ratios to assess their impact on classification accuracy. Models were evaluated using controlled pitfall-trap imagery to examine the influence of scene …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Excessive postoperative antibiotic use in pediatric surgical patients contributes to antibiotic resistance and increases the risk of Clostridioides difficile infection. Despite established guidelines recommending limited postoperative antibiotic duration, many hospitals struggle with de-implementation. This study aims to disseminate and evaluate the impact of a combined strategy to reduce unnecessary postoperative antibiotic use which combines enhanced antimicrobial stewardship program facilitation, defined as a set of actions to enable implementation, combined with order set review and modification. This multi-center study builds on an initial stepped wedge cluster randomized trial involving nine children's hospitals, where facilitation training improved implementation of surgical prophylaxis …

Pakistan’S Growth Experience, 1947–2007, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2025

Pakistan’S Growth Experience, 1947–2007, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Pakistan’s growth experience over the past sixty years is both impressive and disappointing. It is impressive because rapid growth rate has resulted in a quadrupling of per capita incomes and reduction in poverty levels by one half despite fairly high population growth. Structural changes have transformed a predominantly agrarian economy to a more diversified production structure. Manufactures account for 80 percent of the country’s exports. But there is a sense of disappointment too. Social indicators are among the worst in developing countries. Pakistan ranks 134th among 177 countries in Human Development Index. Income Inequalities, Rural Urban disparities and Gender differentials …

All Bets Are On: Addiction, Prediction, Regulation, And The Future Of Financial Gambling, Sharon Rabinovitz, Nizan G. Packin Nov 2025

All Bets Are On: Addiction, Prediction, Regulation, And The Future Of Financial Gambling, Sharon Rabinovitz, Nizan G. Packin

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

This Article challenges traditional financial regulation by exploring how prediction markets—initially developed as sophisticated tools for collective forecasting—increasingly resemble gambling venues. These platforms, once designed to harness crowd wisdom, have transformed into high-stakes ecosystems where engage- ment-driven features blur the boundary between forecasting and betting. This evolution presents a dual challenge: on one hand, certain platforms, including regulated ones, offer innovative avenues for price discovery and risk hedging; on the other, their gamblified design exposes users to significant behavioral and financial risks.

Through comprehensive empirical analysis of gamblification and self-determination manipulation across five prediction market interfaces, this Article demonstrates how …

Employee Perception Of Administrator Leadership Behaviors In Southeastern U.S. Hospitals That May Contribute To Employee Turnover, Kim Steele

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Given the increasing significance of employee turnover, administrative leadership in U.S. Southeastern hospitals stands at a critical turning point. The specific research problem is that leadership behaviors may create an intolerable environment for employees, leading to an intent to leave and turnover. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to explore administrative leadership behaviors that contribute to employee turnover, with a specific focus on leadership behaviors in U.S. Southeastern hospitals. The conceptual framework included grounded theory, which examines underlying social processes, and behavioral theory, focusing on leadership practices and behavior change. Fifteen administrative employees, four men and 11 women, …

Intimate Partner Violence: Serving Heterosexual Male And Same-Sex Victims, David Welch Nov 2025

Intimate Partner Violence: Serving Heterosexual Male And Same-Sex Victims, David Welch

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an ongoing social problem across nationalities, cultures, socioeconomic statuses, sexual orientations, and genders. Historically, research into IPV has focused on the heterosexual female victim and male perpetrator paradigm, including identifying the root causes of this phenomenon and appropriate treatment models. There is a distinct gap in the current literature addressing how therapists in the psychological community approach working with heterosexual male and same-sex victims of IPV, beginning with case conceptualization. To explore the unique case conceptualization considerations of therapists as they encounter heterosexual male and same-sex IPV victims in their practice, a general phenomenological research …

Is The Game Rigged? Why Sports Betting Is Becoming A Legal Time Bomb, Lawrence Kirzhner Nov 2025

Is The Game Rigged? Why Sports Betting Is Becoming A Legal Time Bomb, Lawrence Kirzhner

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

The International Olympic Committee defines “competition manipulation” as “when the result of a tournament or competition is partially or completely decided in advance and the match is played to ensure the pre-determined outcome.” Considering the Olympics hosts 43 sports, this definition can probably be applied to many, if not all, sports around the globe. While it is against the rules of sportsmanship as well as against the law, athletes “who bet on their sport might be tempted to fully or partially manipulate their competition in order to receive financial gain.” The sports world has experienced many scandals of manipulated competition …

An Integrated Ca–Markov Modeling Framework For Forecasting Land Use And Land Cover Dynamics In Arkansas, Usa, Rasool Vahid, Mohamed H. Aly

Environmental Dynamics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Land use and land cover (LULC) changes significantly shape urban environments and directly impact ecological and socioeconomic systems. This study aims to explore these interconnections by employing the Cellular Automata–Markov (CA–Markov) model to assess and predict LULC dynamics in Arkansas. Historical LULC datasets from 2001 to 2021, obtained from the National Land Cover Database, were simplified from 11 into 5 classes to facilitate analysis and effectively map transitions. The model was validated by predicting LULC for 2016 and 2021 and comparing the predictions with the real maps, achieving an overall accuracy of approximately 91.9%, using model validation metrics, including precision, …

On Influence Tail Bounds In Online Social Networks, Michael Simpson, Laks V. S. Lakshmanan, Venkatesh Srinivasan Nov 2025

On Influence Tail Bounds In Online Social Networks, Michael Simpson, Laks V. S. Lakshmanan, Venkatesh Srinivasan

Mathematics and Computer Science

The influence estimation and maximization problems study the expected reach of a seed set in social networks under a stochastic propagation model. Motivated by the practical utility of characterizing the distribution of reach values, we systematically analyze the tail behaviour of the reach of a seed set. We study tail bound query problems that, for a given seed set, compute either the maximum reach for a given probability threshold or the highest probability of achieving a target reach. We prove #P-hardness and propose algorithms that balance efficiency and accuracy. We also examine tail bound optimization problems that find a seed …
