Male Veteran Sexual Trauma Survivors' Experiences Of Military Culture And Institutional Betrayal, Karen James Lewis
Male Veteran Sexual Trauma Survivors' Experiences Of Military Culture And Institutional Betrayal, Karen James Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The phenomenon of Military sexual trauma (MST) among male survivors is significantly underreported and lacking in scholarly research. The purpose of this qualitative generic study was to explore male veteran MST survivors’ perspectives on military culture and institutional betrayal. Cultural spillover theory provided the framework, emphasizing that a culture that legitimizes violence to achieve its goals has the potential to foster illegitimate violence within that culture. The primary research question in this study was: What are the perceptions and experiences of male veteran MST survivors on military institutional culture and MST? Six semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom with male …

BACKGROUND: Perceived health competence is a construct encompassing individuals’ confidence in managing their health and health-related behaviors. The 8-item Perceived Health Competence Scale (PHCS-8), developed to measure this construct, has established psychometric properties including test-retest reliability and predictive validity for health behaviors and clinical outcomes. We aimed to validate the 2-item Perceived Health Competence Scale (PHCS-2), an abbreviated version of the PHCS-8, for use in clinical and research settings where respondent burden is a primary concern. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a psychometric validation study using pooled data from 482 participants across two cohort studies conducted in an integrative medicine clinic. Participants …

PURPOSE: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are highly aggressive sarcomas with poor prognosis. The enzyme methylthioadenosine phosphorylase (MTAP) is lost in ∼25% to 50% of MPNSTs, which is associated with loss of the tumor suppressor gene CDKN2A. Inhibition of PRMT5 was found to be synthetically lethal in cells with MTAP loss due to accumulation of the substrate methylthioadenosine (MTA), an endogenous PRMT5 inhibitor. TNG908 and TNG462 are clinical-stage MTA-cooperative PRMT5 inhibitors that demonstrate selectivity for MTAP-deleted (null) cells over MTAP-proficient [wild-type (WT)] cells. Both compounds drive durable tumor regressions in various cancer xenograft models with MTAP loss.

In-Silico Assessment Of Aortic Valve Function And Mechanics Under Hypertension, Jason A. Shar, Philippe Sucosky
In-Silico Assessment Of Aortic Valve Function And Mechanics Under Hypertension, Jason A. Shar, Philippe Sucosky
Faculty Articles
Introduction: Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the most common heart valve disorder. While hypertension is a major risk factor, the mechanisms by which elevated blood pressure contributes to calcification are largely unknown. Given the established sensitivity of aortic valve (AV) tissue to mechanical cues, hypertension may subject AV leaflets to a stress state conducive to CAVD. To address this hypothesis, the objective of this study was to compare AV function and mechanics under normotensive (NTN, 120/ 80 mmHg), pre-hypertensive (preHTN, 125/80 mmHg) and hypertensive (HTN, 130/90 mmHg) conditions using fluid-structure interaction modeling.
Methods: AV flow and leaflet dynamics were …

Culture Clash: New Majority Students At Psu, David Peterson Del Mar, Alejandra Vazquez
PDXOpen: Open Educational Resources
At the heart of this open access book are nearly 100 interviews that the authors conducted with New Majority Portland State University undergraduates, especially first-generation students from immigrant families. These young adults have a lot to say about the practical and emotional challenges of balancing their warm cultures and extensive family obligations with college and classroom experiences that are often intimidating and impersonal. The book includes suggestions from the students and some of the faculty and staff they praised for how Portland State might become a place where many more feel at home and fulfill their dreams.

Management Of Stenotrophomonas Mediastinitis After Heart Transplantation For Persistent Driveline Infection: A Case Report, James Lee West, Charles W. Hoopes, Jeremey Walker, Anoma Nellore, Erik J. Orozco-Hernandez
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
We report a 62-year-old male who had a Heartware left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation and subsequently developed a persistent driveline infection, culminating in an abscess along the driveline site despite 18 months of antibiotic treatment. His situation was further complicated post-transplant by the onset of mediastinitis, linked to a previously undervalued Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infection. This report highlights the potential risks of heart transplantation in patients with unresolved LVAD driveline infections, particularly mediastinitis. The presence of existing driveline infections, combined with the immunosuppressed status of patients, necessitates aggressive surgical measures. Our treatment approach, involving multiple mediastinal washouts, omental flap use, …

The Efficacy Of Topical Paromomycin-Gentamicin Versus Topical Paromomycin Alone In The Treatment Of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: A Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Trials, Tareq Alshaikh, Mohammed Jihad, Awwad Jomaa
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most common protozoal skin infection worldwide. Multiple treatments for CL have been developed to address issues related to resistance, availability, and safety. Topical treatments have shown promise by reducing unnecessary systemic exposure and providing a viable local therapeutic option. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted of all literature published before 28 February 2025 through PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, and EBSCO, comparing topical paromomycin–gentamicin (PG) with topical paromomycin alone (PR). Two studies involving a total of 774 patients were included. Relative risks (RRs) from both studies were pooled using a fixed-effect meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed …

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers
Bifidobacterium has captured major attention recently because of its health benefits and extensive research highlighting its potential in cancer treatment and prevention. Evidence suggests that bifidobacterium can actively fight against various types of cancer, including those of the colon, lungs, breast, and stomach. Research indicates that several species of bifidobacterium can potentiate the action of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation therapy in battling tumors, and reducing their adverse effects. Bifidobacteria shows its multipronged effect by modulating various immunomodulatory and inflammatory signaling pathways, potentially leading to the suppression of tumor growth. Moreover, different species of bifidobacteria are known to regulate signaling molecules …
Childhood Events And Counseling Experiences Of Chinese And Korean American Transracial Adoptees, Mele Kramer, Lee Stadtlander
Childhood Events And Counseling Experiences Of Chinese And Korean American Transracial Adoptees, Mele Kramer, Lee Stadtlander
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
From the 1950s through 2024, transracial adoptions—particularly of Korean and Chinese children—have been increasingly prevalent in Western societies. While these adoptions provided children with opportunities to grow up in loving and supportive families, they also introduced unique challenges related to identity, cultural integration, and self-esteem. This basic qualitative study aimed to explore the lived experiences of Chinese and Korean transracial adoptees (TRAs) within their adoptive families, in their interactions with counseling, and their perceptions of the effectiveness of counseling interventions. The study was grounded in Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) and the Openness to Communication framework to examine the experiences of 19 …
Strategies To Improve Employee Retention And Organizational Performance In Healthcare, Paula Faye Guillory
Strategies To Improve Employee Retention And Organizational Performance In Healthcare, Paula Faye Guillory
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A lack of effective strategies to improve employee retention and organizational performance is a concern for healthcare leaders. Without such strategies, organizations may incur costs through recruitment and training, reduce productivity due to workflow disruption and knowledge gaps, damage employee morale by increasing workloads for remaining employees, and harm the organization’s reputation, potentially affecting patient relationships, hindering growth, and eroding any competitive advantage. Grounded in Penrose’s resource-based view theory, this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to identify and explore the effective strategies healthcare leaders use to improve employee retain and organizational performance. Participants were six leaders of healthcare organizations located in …

Staff Education Program To Improve Nurses' Knowledge Of Diabetes Self-Management Education (Dsme) Toward Reducing Readmissions, Vivian Adaora Okechukwu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This project was a staff education program to enhance nurses' knowledge and skills in Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) in reducing hospital readmission. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that occurs as a direct result of the body's inability to produce enough insulin or the inability to utilize insulin in the bloodstream effectively, consequently accounting for life-threatening health complications. At the local organization, where diabetes is the third leading cause of hospitalization, evidence shows that it critically affects about 25% of the patient population. Also, some care providers at the organization do not have the distinctive competencies to give DSME …
Staff Education Project To Improve Management Of Depression, Maryjane Henshaw
Staff Education Project To Improve Management Of Depression, Maryjane Henshaw
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
I designed this Doctor of Nursing Practice staff education project to enhance the ability of primary care nurses at a mental health outpatient clinic to manage depression in patients who are non-compliant with treatment. Currently, nurses lack structured training in recognizing and addressing depression, which contributes to inconsistent care, increased relapse and readmission rates, lower patient satisfaction, and greater healthcare utilization. This project aimed to provide evidence-based education to close a critical gap in practice that affects care quality, continuity, nurse confidence, and patient outcomes. The guiding practice-focused question was: In primary care nurses at a mental health outpatient clinic, …

Effects Of Experiences Of Widowhood Practice On Young Widows’ Well-Being In Southeastern Nigeria, Ijeoma Josephine Edinoh
Effects Of Experiences Of Widowhood Practice On Young Widows’ Well-Being In Southeastern Nigeria, Ijeoma Josephine Edinoh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In Nigeria long-standing sociocultural norms dictate widowhood practice, which widows are expected to undergo when they lose their husbands. The impact of this ancient culture, which has continuously been encouraged from generation to generation to date, has been devastating for widows. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to investigate the effects of widowhood practices on the well-being of young widows in southeastern Nigeria. Feminist theory was the conceptual framework. Through semistructured, audio-recorded interviews conducted via Zoom, data were collected from 10 young widows between age 18 to 45 in the southeastern Nigeria. After the data were collected, Braun …
Staff Education To Increase Nurses’ Knowledge And Comprehension Of Psychiatric Advance Directives, Lenora Johnson
Staff Education To Increase Nurses’ Knowledge And Comprehension Of Psychiatric Advance Directives, Lenora Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Psychiatric advance directives (PADs) are binding documents through which a patient who has severe mental illness can specify their treatment preferences before becoming mentally ill in a crisis. PADs support patient autonomy, shared decision-making, and reduce the reliance on coercive or involuntary treatments. However, patient record reviews in this practice setting revealed that PAD documentation was not frequently practiced, and nurses were not even aware of or confident enough to assist patients in preparing these directives. This DNP project was designed to bridge this gap by implementing a formal staff education program that would improve the knowledge and awareness of …

Philosophy
Communication technologies change the way we relate to each other and ourselves. In this essay we analyze the effects that extended reality (XR) technologies are likely to have on conceptions of the self, romantic relationships, and other associated concepts like sexual orientation. While these technologies are in their infancy, key psychological and philosophical concepts are already being explored. We begin by defining extended reality and the family of technologies that make it possible. We pay special attention to the way these immersive technologies ground the experiences of presence which can become virtually real. These experiences provide a useful framework for …
