Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship

Blood-accessible biomarkers offer promising insights into the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and other muscle diseases. Here, we quantified the relative abundance of 7,289 serum proteins using SomaScan proteomics in pre-treatment samples from 51 boys with DMD (aged 4 to < 7) and 13 healthy controls from the VISION DMD (VBP15-004) trial. An independent validation cohort of untreated DMD boys (aged 4 to < 8) from the FOR-DMD trial was also analyzed. Of the proteins screened, 26% and 15% were significantly elevated and decreased, respectively, in the serum of young DMD boys compared to controls (adjusted p-value < 0.05). A high correlation (Spearman r = 0.85) in fold changes was observed between the two datasets. Many proteins with altered levels overlapped with known markers of muscle injury, inflammation, regeneration, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Selected biomarkers were queried in two published muscle mRNA and a muscle snRNAseq dataset in DMD biopsies. Novel factors involved in muscle regeneration and ECM remodeling were identified. This larger-scale, multi-clinical trial-based cohort study in untreated DMD boys substantially expands the catalog of circulating biomarkers, highlighting early-stage pathological processes. These findings can help identify new therapeutic targets and develop clinically actionable biomarkers to assess disease progression and response to therapies.

Evaluating And Supporting Transformative Agreements: Five Institutional Perspectives In Discussion, Anna R. Craft, Peggy Kain, Danica Lewis, Camille Mccutcheon, William Joseph Thomas

Libraries Professional Work

Transformative—or Read and Publish—deals are impacting the open access (OA) publishing landscape, allowing libraries to test new models for funding and incentivizing OA publishing, while also providing direct benefits for authors, including discounts and waivers on article processing charges (APCs). But how sustainable are transformative deals in light of library materials budgets and workloads for personnel who negotiate these deals, manage the implementations, and support campus authors? And how can libraries evaluate the perceived value of these deals in relation to the specific needs of their institutional users?

Implementing Evidence-Based Strategies For Falls Prevention, Gregory Njong Nov 2025

Implementing Evidence-Based Strategies For Falls Prevention, Gregory Njong

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Older adults are particularly susceptible to post-fall injuries and loss of independence. This project was implemented to decrease the number of resident falls within a long-term care setting by enhancing the knowledge and daily routine of direct-care personnel. Falls remain one of the most frequent and severe safety concerns. Although policies on fall prevention are in place, workers often inconsistently incorporate risk evaluation and fail to identify all the causes of a fall. The purpose of this project was to determine whether a structured educational program could raise the level of knowledge about fall-prevention and provide safer care practices. The …

Staff Education To Acute Care Nursing Staff On Physical Medicine And Rehabilitation, Melissa Marie Emeott Nov 2025

Staff Education To Acute Care Nursing Staff On Physical Medicine And Rehabilitation, Melissa Marie Emeott

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

For this Doctor of Nursing Practice project in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), the focus was on enhancing education for acute care nurses about the benefits of inpatient rehabilitation for appropriate patients. The practice problem was the underutilization of inpatient rehabilitation despite its proven benefits in improving patient outcomes and reducing readmissions. With this project, I aimed to educate nurses on identifying suitable candidates for inpatient rehabilitation, thereby improving patient care transitions and outcomes. The practice-focused question revolved around assessing the effectiveness of educational interventions in increasing nurse knowledge and referral rates to inpatient rehab. Analytical strategies included pre- and …

Beyond Words: Analyzing The Effectiveness Of Land Acknowledgements, Kendall A. Trevino

2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive

Land Acknowledgements (LAs) have become common in recent years across cities, sports organizations, universities, and other institutions. However, many were created to avoid criticism rather than to pay genuine respect. Tribal members and both Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars emphasize that LAs have specific criteria they must meet to be considered meaningful. These criteria include recognition of the past, promoting tribal sovereignty, emphasizing that Natives are still here, and a relationship is established with the tribes being acknowledged. LAs should promote tribal sovereignty and establish strong relationships with the communities they acknowledge. The research in this paper draws on academic articles, …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Background: Primary care nursing faces an escalating burnout crisis threatening patient safety and organizational sustainability. Internal data reveals 68% of primary care nurses report high emotional exhaustion scores on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), significantly exceeding the national average of 45%. Annual voluntary turnover of 28% results in direct replacement costs exceeding $750,000, with associated increases in absenteeism (15% higher) and overtime costs (22% higher) compared to regional benchmarks. Purpose: This quality improvement project implemented a comprehensive multi-departmental resilience and stress reduction program to reduce nurse burnout, improve retention, and enhance patient safety outcomes in a primary care setting serving …

Hospital-Acquired Infections Evidence-Based Standards Of Hand Hygiene, Terry Hosch Nov 2025

Hospital-Acquired Infections Evidence-Based Standards Of Hand Hygiene, Terry Hosch

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) remain a challenge for healthcare organizations despite being preventable. Implementing and monitoring evidence-based hand-washing standards can help reduce the spread of germs and HAIs. The cost of HAIs continues to rise, affecting finances, patient length of stay, and outcomes. HAIs add $28 billion to $45 billion annually to U.S. healthcare costs. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine and evaluate HAIs (dependent variable) and hand hygiene compliance (independent variable), as well as the impact on healthcare organizations' financial performance, patient length of stay, and outcomes. The study employed Donabedian's theoretical framework, which comprises …

Development Of A Clinical Practice Guideline For Diabetic Ketoacidosis (Dka) Management In The Intensive Care Unit, Kushom Gurung Leftwich

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addressed a critical gap in care at a 24-bed, combined, intensive care unit (ICU): The absence of a standardized, evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) for managing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is a life-threatening emergency requiring timely, coordinated, and evidence-driven management. Despite its prevalence, the project site ICU lacked formal guidelines, resulting in fragmented care delivery and inconsistent treatment practices. Project site leadership expressed concerns that the absence of a unified protocol contributed to increased workload for nurses and physicians with frequent interruptions for order verification and delays that compromised patient safety and care …

Trump V. Slaughter: Brief Of Independent Agency Board Members And Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of Respondent, Samuel Bagenstos Nov 2025

Trump V. Slaughter: Brief Of Independent Agency Board Members And Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of Respondent, Samuel Bagenstos

Appellate Briefs

Amici are removed board members from independent federal agencies and scholars whose work includes the study of independent agencies and the separation of powers between the President and Congress. Amici advance the view that there are federal agencies whose responsibility for protecting the safety and stability of the national infrastructure or ensuring the structural integrity of government necessitates their independence. Significant negative consequences would likely follow if these agencies were to lose their independence and their work were to become politicized.

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This study examines the impact of health information exchange (HIE) participation on hospital performance in the United States, focusing on profitability, efficiency, and quality. Analyzing data from 3,294 hospitals over 3 years (2014–2016) and using multiple regression models, the results showed a positive association between HIE participation and improved performance. HIE membership is linked to increased profitability, enhanced efficiency, and certain quality enhancements, particularly in larger, metropolitan, for-profit hospitals. However, the relationship with quality outcomes is less conclusive. The comprehensive analysis considers various control variables, and the findings of this study offer valuable insights for hospital managers and policymakers and …

Shrek: The Musical, David Lindsay-Abaire, Jeanine Tesori Nov 2025

Shrek: The Musical, David Lindsay-Abaire, Jeanine Tesori

Taylor Theatre Playbills

The playbill for Taylor University's performance of Shrek: The Musical with book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori.

Performed November 20-22, 2025 in the Mitchell Theatre at Taylor University.

Shrek is, on the surface, a whimsical fairy tale full of comedy, color, and charm. But beneath the humor lies a story about seeing and being seen—about belonging, forgiveness, and the quiet courage it takes to live authentically in a world that too easily labels and excludes. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am …

Younger African American Men’S Beliefs And Attitudes Toward Prostate Cancer Screening, Linda Teemer-Baker Nov 2025

Younger African American Men’S Beliefs And Attitudes Toward Prostate Cancer Screening, Linda Teemer-Baker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Prostate cancer screening has been a focus of scholars since the late 20th century, as researchers have sought to address persistent disparities in early detection and mortality rates among African American men. Researchers have demonstrated that cultural beliefs, mistrust of the medical system, and limited access to healthcare significantly influence prostate cancer screening behaviors within this population. However, researchers have yet to establish how younger African American men specifically interpret prostate cancer risk and how their beliefs and attitudes shape decisions regarding screening participation. The purpose of this study was to explore the beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes of younger African …

Vibrato In The Singing Voice: A Survey Of Vibrato Practices In The Studio For Teachers And Coaches, Anna Alyce Tarver Nov 2025

Vibrato In The Singing Voice: A Survey Of Vibrato Practices In The Studio For Teachers And Coaches, Anna Alyce Tarver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Historically variable in its terminology, “vibrato” was not used until the nineteenth century. Coaches and teachers recognize it as a signature of healthy, expressive singing, except in some stylistically appropriate contexts. However, it continues to raise questions. Little data has been reported on vibrato outside of general characteristics. Only a few sources exist examining the knowledge and skillset of teachers of singing. This survey aimed to gain information on what instructors and coaches are told about vibrato in comparison to what they experience in the voice studio. An anonymous mixed-method survey was distributed to 201 professional voice teachers and coaches; …
