Gliomas represent a heterogenous group of primary brain tumors with overlapping imaging phenotypes. Treatment typically includes surgery and/or chemoradiation, however this varies based on the overall lesion and clinical presentation. This heterogeneity in both lesion characteristics and management strategies contributes to a lack of reliable findings when evaluating treatment outcomes with conventional MRI. The overlapping imaging features of radiation necrosis and tumor progression post-treatment can be particularly challenging for radiologists. We present a dataset of 203 glioma patients with 594 post-treatment timepoints of relevant clinical history and routine T1, T1 postcontrast, T2, and FLAIR weighted MR sequences. Preprocessing of the …

BACKGROUND: Key information pages for informed consent require a concise summary of information to improve participant understanding but have not widely incorporated health literacy best practices.

OBJECTIVE: We previously developed a visual key information template to improve informed consent. In this study, we conducted usability testing of this customizable one-page key information template.

METHODS: We used the Designing for Accelerated Translation framework to plan for actionable, efficient usability testing. Participants (N=15) were asked to spend about 20 minutes using the visual key information template and engaging in a think-aloud protocol. They then responded to qualitative debrief questions about the template …

Persistent maladaptive drug-context associations are a key component of relapse vulnerability and pose a major obstacle in treating opioid use disorder. Although the dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) is critical for contextual memory formation, the synaptic mechanisms by which opioids alter hippocampal circuits to sustain these associations remain unclear. We previously found that repeated context-paired morphine exposure impairs dHPC long-term potentiation (LTP) through enhanced activity of small-conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK2) channels. Here, we investigated the role of SK2 channels in morphine-context associative learning and memory by combining in vivo electrophysiology, molecular analyses, and behavioral pharmacology with the morphine-conditioned place preference (MorCPP) paradigm …

Mortality And Immortality: Reconsidering Anglo-American Perspectives In Light Of Kierkegaard, Heidegger, And Jonas, Mehrzad Ali Moin Nov 2025

Mortality And Immortality: Reconsidering Anglo-American Perspectives In Light Of Kierkegaard, Heidegger, And Jonas, Mehrzad Ali Moin

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation addresses fundamental questions surrounding mortality and does so existentially. Of central concern is what it means to be mortal, the value of mortality, how we ought to relate to it, whether immortality is preferable to mortality, and what moral obligations can be derived from our mortality. By engaging thinkers such as Heidegger, Kierkegaard, Jonas, Epicurus, and contemporary anglophone philosophers, this project seeks to challenge prevailing attitudes towards death. Through a meta-philosophical lens, I argue for the value of mortality as a shaper of the meaningfulness of existence, and for the cultivation of what I call ‘genuine mortality consciousness’ …

Exploring The Acceptability Of The Kimberley Mum’S Mood Scale For Perinatal Mental Health Screening In Gove District Hospital, North-East Arnhem Land, Tom P. Atkinson, Erica P. Spry, David Atkinson, Julia V. Marley, Emma Carlin

Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet

Objective: Across Australia perinatal mental health challenges disproportionately impact Aboriginal women. Identifying Aboriginal women at risk of adverse mental health outcomes in the perinatal period is an important step in supporting their overall health and wellness. Current screening tools have significant limitations when used with Aboriginal women.

The Kimberley Mums Mood Scale (KMMS) is a culturally secure approach to screening for perinatal mental health disorders in Aboriginal women. It has been validated in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and may be able to improve mental health screening in other regions. In this study the KMMS was trialled at a …

Humor As A Predictor Of Life Satisfaction And Burnout Among Firefighters, Kayla Marie Kovach Nov 2025

Humor As A Predictor Of Life Satisfaction And Burnout Among Firefighters, Kayla Marie Kovach

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Notwithstanding knowledge of the high stress levels experienced by firefighters, little is known about their coping strategies as compared with the general population. To address this gap, the differences in humor styles between firefighters and nonfirefighters in the prediction of life satisfaction and burnout were assessed. The study was grounded in the PERMA theory of well-being and the job demands-resources theory. A cross-sectional, correlational survey research design was used to assess if there are differences between firefighters and nonfirefighters in the types of humor (i.e., self-enhancing, affiliative, aggressive, and self-defeating) used and in the prediction of burnout and life satisfaction …

Parents’ Sustained Recovery From Substance Use During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Amanda Antis Nov 2025

Parents’ Sustained Recovery From Substance Use During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Amanda Antis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Parents in recovery from substance abuse rely on social support and programs to maintain their sobriety consistently. However, specific programs crucial for their social and mental well-being, such as most 12-step groups and recovery centers, were shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite some research on the impact of substance abuse during the pandemic, little attention has been given to sustained recovery. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore how parents maintained recovery from substance use amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Schlossberg’s transition process model served as the theoretical framework for this study. Semistructured interviews with nine …

The Initial User Experience Of A Gamified Mental Health App, Angill Lynae Oliva

Master's Theses

Despite the availability of mobile mental health apps, high dropout rates due to low user engagement and attitudes about their effectiveness remain significant challenges. The present study examined the relationship between digital therapeutic alliance (i.e., the efficacy of therapeutic quality for digitalized mental health interventions) and college students’ engagement and perceptions of use with a gamified mental health app, SuperBetter. Digital therapeutic alliance was measured using the Working Alliance Inventory-Short Revised (WAI-SR), while engagement was assessed by the total number of completed activities in the SuperBetter app. Students’ intrinsic motivation was measured using the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI); and perceptions …

Call Ball – Benefits And Feasibility Of A Practical Staff Alert System In Ed, Sarah Sturges-Perry, David L. Smith, Kristiina Hyrkas Nov 2025

Call Ball – Benefits And Feasibility Of A Practical Staff Alert System In Ed, Sarah Sturges-Perry, David L. Smith, Kristiina Hyrkas

Biennial Convention (CONV)

The call light system is one of the major communication technologies that link staff to patients. In regular hospital rooms patients have a calling alert system that provides this important link. In crowded Emergency Departments (ED), for patients located in hallways, this important connection is often lost. Wireless call system technology is available, and its use has been described e.g., in nursing homes. However, the cost of this technology is still moderately high, it requires a central monitoring system and an attendant, and the small transmitters can easily be lost or discarded in a hectic ED environment. Therefore, there has …

Unit Interest Survey (Uis): Validating New Graduate Nurse (Ngn) Work-Life Assessment, Tiffany Montgomery, Danielle Walker Nov 2025

Unit Interest Survey (Uis): Validating New Graduate Nurse (Ngn) Work-Life Assessment, Tiffany Montgomery, Danielle Walker

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Background: NGN retention is a concern in the US, with 23.8% turnover rate costing hospitals an average of $56,277 per nurse. Healthcare organizations must adopt strategies to retain and engage NGNs. Currently, applicants choose work units based on staffing needs or preferences, not personal assessment (strengths, communication style, personality). Self-reflection when choosing a practice setting could enhance job satisfaction and reduce burnout. Person-job fit moderates n job performance and compassion fatigue, while lifestyle factors influence retention. No reliable tool exists for guiding NGNs in assessing work and lifestyle preferences

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate …

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Providencia rettgeri is a Gram-negative bacterium, rarely reported as a cause of diabetic wound infections. Its frequent resistance to β-lactams and carbapenems limits treatment options, especially in immunocompromised patients. We present the case of a 59-year-old unhoused male living with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and prior bilateral transmetatarsal amputations who presented with a University of Texas 3B diabetic foot ulcer. Magnetic resonance imaging showed osteomyelitis of metatarsals 2–4, and bone biopsy grew Providencia rettgeri and Proteus mirabilis. The patient declined further surgery and was treated with 6 weeks of cefepime and metronidazole, with outpatient wound care, achieving wound closure …
