Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL) Symposium
In July 2024, a new accessibility law in Colorado took effect, which requires state and government agencies—including libraries—to make their digital content accessible to users with disabilities. Recognizing that digital accessibility is both a legal obligation and a fundamental part of equitable access to information, the Strauss Library at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus developed a step-by-step remediation plan to bring its institutional repository into compliance. The project began by rewriting outdated accessibility policies, then transitioned towards assessing collections, setting priorities, and developing workflows to remediate inaccessible files. This presentation will outline the strategic approach the library adopted …

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL) Symposium
After one year of going live with our repository, researchers are capitalizing on the repository's benefits to enhance the impact of their work. One key set of data that has driven more inspiration and inquiry from our internal stakeholders is the repository statistics. We know that data dashboards are a common leverage point in our organization, so we decided to bring the repository statistics into the internal environment in which our stakeholders are already investing their time and resources. Our challenge was to create a dashboard of repository usage statistics to inform, inspire, and motivate uploads to our digital repository. …

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL) Symposium
Since the 1970s, the University of Virginia School of Medicine’s Medical Center Hour has hosted speakers who explore the relationship between medicine and society. When patrons request access to recordings that have not been digitized, staff must carefully review the footage to identify sensitive material such as PHI and apply redactions before making the video accessible. While this process ensures compliance with privacy and confidentiality requirements, it can surface deeper emotional and ethical concerns. Staff may be exposed to distressing content during review, and patrons may be confronted with emotionally challenging material with little preparation. This presentation discusses how trauma-informed …

In 2024, the Internet Archive (IA) experienced a DDoS attack and subsequent outage that disrupted access to its materials. The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) was directly affected, as our institutional repository/digital collections platform, the UMB Digital Archive, relies on Internet Archive URLs for many of its digitized historical collections. Due to storage constraints, these collections were linked through IA URIs rather than hosted directly in the repository. Past digitization contracts with the Internet Archive provided only URIs to the scans, and HSHSL never received local copies, leaving us without any access to …

The purpose of this study was to explore the communication choices of caregivers of deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children. Specifically, we explored what communication options caregivers were presented with, identify what factors impacted a caregiver’s decision to pursue spoken language, and identify what barriers exist to learning sign language. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 caregivers of DHH children who had decision making power at the time of their child’s diagnosis. Transcripts were coded using an inductive approach with triangulation between authors. Many families reported that minimal to no information was provided about communication options at the time …

Lessons From Tiktok: Using Popular Social Media Platforms To Engage Gen Z, Debra Bernstein
Urban Library Journal
This study looks at how academic libraries in the New York City metropolitan area are using TikTok to engage with their communities, particularly students. It analyzes the most popular videos from five active library accounts, categorizing content types and measuring engagement through TikTok’s built-in metrics. Results indicate that humorous and lighthearted content consistently receives the highest engagement, while instructional or “how-to” videos tend to underperform. These findings suggest that while TikTok may not be the most effective platform for instructional outreach, it holds potential as a tool for visibility, community engagement, and humanizing the library’s presence. As students increasingly turn …
