Outage As Opportunity: Local Backups For Long-Term Access, Sarah Weirich, Tara Wink, Amy Lubinski

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL) Symposium

In 2024, the Internet Archive (IA) experienced a DDoS attack and subsequent outage that disrupted access to its materials. The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) was directly affected, as our institutional repository/digital collections platform, the UMB Digital Archive, relies on Internet Archive URLs for many of its digitized historical collections. Due to storage constraints, these collections were linked through IA URIs rather than hosted directly in the repository. Past digitization contracts with the Internet Archive provided only URIs to the scans, and HSHSL never received local copies, leaving us without any access to …

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Background

Early enrollment in Part C Early Intervention (EI) by age 6 months is linked to improved language and kindergarten readiness in deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children, but its effect on later academic outcomes is unclear. This study examines whether earlier (<6 months) or later (>6 months) enrollment influences third-grade reading proficiency.

Method

This study used data linked from three Ohio state agencies for infants identified with permanent hearing loss born 2008-2014 who received EI; 412 had third grade standardized reading tests. Reading levels were categorized from limited to advanced. Logistic regression assessed the association between enrollment timing and reading proficiency, …

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

The purpose of this study was to explore the communication choices of caregivers of deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children. Specifically, we explored what communication options caregivers were presented with, identify what factors impacted a caregiver’s decision to pursue spoken language, and identify what barriers exist to learning sign language. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 caregivers of DHH children who had decision making power at the time of their child’s diagnosis. Transcripts were coded using an inductive approach with triangulation between authors. Many families reported that minimal to no information was provided about communication options at the time …

Lessons From Tiktok: Using Popular Social Media Platforms To Engage Gen Z, Debra Bernstein

Urban Library Journal

This study looks at how academic libraries in the New York City metropolitan area are using TikTok to engage with their communities, particularly students. It analyzes the most popular videos from five active library accounts, categorizing content types and measuring engagement through TikTok’s built-in metrics. Results indicate that humorous and lighthearted content consistently receives the highest engagement, while instructional or “how-to” videos tend to underperform. These findings suggest that while TikTok may not be the most effective platform for instructional outreach, it holds potential as a tool for visibility, community engagement, and humanizing the library’s presence. As students increasingly turn …

Enhancing Recommendation Performance Via Stacking Ensemble And Synthetic Data Augmentation, Zahraa Yaareb Hani, Mohsin Hasan Hussein

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Recommendation systems are essential tools that primarily aim to help users navigate through a large volume of information. They simplify the decision-making process by suggesting relevant items based on users’ historical behaviour. However, their performance is often affected by common problems such as data sparsity. This work proposes a stacking-based ensemble recommendation system that integrates multiple machine learning models to enhance the model’s predictive performance. A new synthetic data augmentation technique is introduced to address the sparsity issue in the user–item rating matrix. This method uses the Naïve Bayes algorithm to predict additional ratings for each user. These are then …

To the Editor and Readership of the Journal of Librarianship and Information Science:

We are writing to express concerns regarding the article, Redefining searching in non-medical sciences systematic reviews: The ascendance of Google Scholar as the primary database (https://doi.org/10.1177/09610006241256393). Our concerns are numerous, and include issues involving the research questions, data availability and validity, representations of evidence synthesis methods, and the disregard for established scholarship which refutes the reliability, transparency and reproducibility of Google Scholar searches for evidence synthesis reviews.

Enhancing Patient And Team Member Safety: Classroom To Clinical Integration For Nursing Students, Yvonne Joseph, Asha Roy

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Patient safety is a prevalent term used in healthcare. This commitment is made each time we care for a patient. We must look at bridging the gap between academia and the clinical setting to keep this promise. Academia focuses on theoretical foundations, ethical aspects, and critical thinking. The clinical aspect focuses on patient care, inclusive of hands-on skills, communication, and critical thinking. All are crucial to the overall development of our students and patient safety. What else is essential to patient safety? A student's self-care, we need to respect our bodies. The phrase, “If you don’t care for yourself, you …

The Psychology Of Telework, Emily K. Lane Nov 2025

The Psychology Of Telework, Emily K. Lane

Dissertations

The growth of telework has reshaped the modern workplace, changing how employees experience connection, fairness, and satisfaction. This dissertation examined the psychological dynamics of teleworking by exploring how the extent of remote work influences job satisfaction through feelings of professional isolation. It also investigated how perceptions of procedural, informational, and interpersonal justice, as well as employee choice and telework normativeness, shape these relationships. Grounded in organizational justice theory (Colquitt, 2001), the study used a two-wave, pseudo-cross-sectional survey of 506 teleworkers. Results indicated that professional isolation did not mediate the relationship between telework extent and job satisfaction when fairness perceptions were …
