Female Politicians And Corruption In Rural India, Somdeep Chatterjee, Shiv Hastawala, Elisa Taveras Dec 2025

Female Politicians And Corruption In Rural India, Somdeep Chatterjee, Shiv Hastawala, Elisa Taveras

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

This paper leverages random assignment of female quotas for leadership positions on Indian village councils to assess its causal effect on corruption. Since the mid-1990s, India has mandated that at least one third of village council chief positions be randomly reserved for women. Using data from the Rural Economic and Demographic Survey (REDS) 2006, we find that an additional term reserved for a female head as opposed to just a single one reduces both the occurrence and bribe amounts paid to the local government by households. This reduction is also observed in bribes paid to other local officials suggesting downstream …

Does Digital Finance Foster Corporate Innovation? Evidence From China, Ning Gu, Ye Wang, Yu Liu, Chengbo Fu

Finance Faculty Publications

This study examines how digital finance foster corporate innovation. Unlike prior research focused on statistical associations, we investigate the underlying economic mechanisms driving that relationship. Using panel data of Chinese listed firms from 2013–2023, we show that digital finance stimulates corporate innovation through two primary channels. On the supply side, digital finance supports innovation by optimizing resource allocation, improving risk management, and providing high-quality information. On the demand side, digital finance stimulates the innovation needs of enterprises by improving their dynamic capabilities. Moreover, a favorable governance environment further amplifies these effects. Heterogeneity analysis reveals stronger impacts for large firms, firms …

Caring For Others And Self Care: Examining “Good” Care Among The Older Vietnamese Community In San José, California, Chloe Nguyen

Master's Theses

In this thesis, I present a study of the older Vietnamese community in San José, California. I explore the concept of "good" care through the anthropology of care, a conceptual framework that examines how care is understood and practiced across different cultural and social contexts. Using ethnographic methods, such as interviews and participant observation, I examine caregiving practices and experiences, as well as community members' perceptions of what constitutes "good" care. I draw on concepts of "good" care, reciprocal caregiving, and self-care to analyze themes that emerge from their caregiving practices and experiences. I also discuss caregiving at a distance …

From Medical Exceptions To Reproductive Freedom, David S. Cohen, Greer Donley Dec 2025

From Medical Exceptions To Reproductive Freedom, David S. Cohen, Greer Donley

Michigan Law Review

Since the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade in 2022, there has been a significant focus on pregnancy complications. This focus has created some risks. Highlighting medically indicated abortion stories could stigmatize the vast majority of abortion seekers who lack medical reasons for abortion and result in narrow remedies that do nothing to undermine abortion bans. This Article presents a way to convert these risks into an opportunity: to use pregnancy complications as a wedge to challenge abortion bans more generally and make abortion more accessible for everyone. We present a long-term strategy to dismantle abortion bans, using several legal …

Design And Analysis Of Low-Cost Lora Mesh Network For Reliable And Secured Precision Agriculture, Yamini Swetha Nadella Dec 2025

Design And Analysis Of Low-Cost Lora Mesh Network For Reliable And Secured Precision Agriculture, Yamini Swetha Nadella

All Theses

Rural precision agriculture requires reliable, low-cost, and energy-efficient communication systems that can cover large farmland areas. Traditional wireless technologies, such as Wi-Fi, cellular, and satellite communication, are either expensive, consume too much power or are even unreliable in maintaining connectivity in large farmlands, which is a common case in rural precision agriculture. LoRa-based networks support long-range communication with extremely low power consumption, making them an appropriate solution for precision agriculture applications in rural farmland areas. Current LoRaWAN systems employ star topology, which also limits their ability to offer efficient, multi-hop connectivity in rural environments.

This thesis presents the design, implementation, …

Utilization Of Mushroom Stems As A Feed Resource For Sustainable Poultry Production, Kayla Stamps Dec 2025

Utilization Of Mushroom Stems As A Feed Resource For Sustainable Poultry Production, Kayla Stamps

All Theses

Soybean meal (SBM) is the primary protein source in poultry diets; however, its escalating cost and the environmental impact of soybean cultivation underscore the need for sustainable alternatives. Mushroom stems are generated at large volumes as agricultural waste, yet contain bioactive compounds and essential nutrients that may benefit poultry health and productivity. Despite these attributes, limited research has evaluated their potential as feed ingredients across different poultry species. This study addressed this gap by investigating whether mushroom stem powder can partially replace SBM in poultry diets while improving performance, health, and environmental outcomes.

Specifically, four experiments were conducted to evaluate …

Royal Canin V. Wullschleger: A Sea Change In Supplemental Jurisdiction?, William G. Beatty Dec 2025

Royal Canin V. Wullschleger: A Sea Change In Supplemental Jurisdiction?, William G. Beatty

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

On January 15, 2025, a unanimous Supreme Court announced a decision about the nature and scope of supplemental jurisdiction that some commentators claim ran contrary to decades of precent from the Supreme Court itself, as well as from every federal appellate circuit to have considered the issue presented in the case, declaring how a federal district court can be forfeited of subject matter jurisdiction by a voluntary amendment to a plaintiff’s pleadings in a properlyremoved complaint.

Royal Canin U.S.A., Inc. v. Wullschleger had been through the district court twice, though the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals on the same number …

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The indie game market is flooded with genre experiments, yet few successfully combine fast-paced action with meaningful strategic decision-making. Our project aims to fill this gap by creating a game that fuses top-down action combat with resource-management tycoon mechanics. We found that in many games, the management phases lack mechanical stakes. Our goal was to intertwine these systems so that choices made in one phase meaningfully impact the other.

Psychological Effects Of Health Disparities: A Multi-Identity Understanding, Shayda Shokooh, Kiana Hosseinzadeh, Olivia Copeland, Katie Wong

Psychology and Child Development

The United States has a long history of public health inequities which continue to impact individuals based on their varying intersectional identities. These systemic obstacles often impede access to healthcare, comprehensive treatment by physicians, and preventative care, among other factors. Disparities within healthcare consequently result in decreased overall well-being and negative psychological impacts, based on identity. We reviewed a variety of academic peer-reviewed studies, both empirical and systematic, investigating three identity factors: racial and ethnic minorities, socioeconomic status, and cognitive disabilities, and examining how these facets influence a person’s mental state and experience of healthcare. We analyzed each of these …

Auer Deference: He Who Writes The Law Must Not Adjudge Its Violation, William G. Kennedy Dec 2025

Auer Deference: He Who Writes The Law Must Not Adjudge Its Violation, William G. Kennedy

MC Law Review

This Comment explores Auer deference and its application to the Sentencing Guidelines, the Sentencing Commission, and its commentary. Auer deference, in its simplest form, requires courts to give controlling weight to an agency’s interpretation of its own regulations unless it is plainly erroneous or inconsistent with the regulation. Following the Court’s decision in Kisor—expressly limiting Auer’s application, the circuit courts have disagreed on the applicability of Auer to the Sentencing Commission’s commentary regarding career offender designation. This disagreement begs for an appearance before the Court of Last Resort, but until that day, the courts must rigidly apply Kisor to …

Contracted Out Of Justice: The Role Of Arbitration Clauses In Undermining Consumer Rights, Brooke Shifflett Dec 2025

Contracted Out Of Justice: The Role Of Arbitration Clauses In Undermining Consumer Rights, Brooke Shifflett

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

This thesis examines the growing use of mandatory arbitration clauses in adhesion contracts and argues that their widespread enforcement has undermined consumer and employee access to justice. Through an analysis of contract law, the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA), Supreme Court jurisprudence, empirical research, and ethical theory, the study explores how arbitration clauses have evolved from a voluntary dispute resolution mechanism into a tool frequently used by corporations to limit liability, suppress collective legal action, and avoid public accountability. The thesis evaluates the doctrine of unconscionability as a critical safeguard against unfair contractual provisions, highlighting how procedural and substantive inequalities often …

Optimizing Virtual Reality User Experience With Balanced Integration Of Quality Attributes, Ananth Ramaseri

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a real-time adaptive framework for mitigating cybersickness and enhancing user experience in virtual reality (VR) environments by dynamically adjusting key visual rendering parameters in response to users’ head movements. Conventional VR systems typically rely on fixed or manually configured settings that do not account for individual motion patterns or varying susceptibility to discomfort, leading to suboptimal usability and degraded immersion. In response, this work integrates software architecture tactics with data-driven machine learning models to proactively manage cybersickness while preserving rendering performance.

The proposed system employs a client–server architecture based on the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern. We conducted a …

Characterization Of Mitochondrial Dna Repair Components And Repair Choices At Targeted Double-Strand Breaks In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Moira Rodriguez

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Plant mitochondrial genomes are complex when compared to most other eukaryotic mitochondrial genomes. They are large and variable in size, expand and rearrange frequently, abundant in non-tandem repeats, but maintain a very low synonymous substitution rate in the remaining coding regions. Many of these complexities can be explained by the increased use of double-strand break repair for DNA damage. To advance the understanding of mitochondrial genome dynamics as it relates to double-strand break repair, we performed a forward genetics screen to identify proteins involved in DNA repair in plant mitochondrial genomes. Through this screen, we identified an RNA/DNA helicase, Suv3, …
