Ai And A Possible Renaissance For Christian Higher Education, Derek Schuurman

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The early Greeks saw the essence of education as Paideia: the process of forming a whole person into an ideal citizen. They emphasized the formation of virtues like prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance in preparation for active citizenship. In Plato’s Republic, we read that “The object of education is to teach us to love what is beautiful,” which involves the shaping of desire.1 For the Greeks, the purpose of education was training in virtue.

Increasing Colon Cancer Screening Completion Rates Utilizing Patient Navigation In Primary Care: A Quality Improvement Project, Anya C. Pennycooke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. It is highly preventable through routine screening and early detection, yet national data indicate that one in three eligible adults remains unscreened. The purpose of this Quality Improvement (QI) project was to increase colon cancer screening completion rates by implementing a patient navigation program. Kristen Swanson’s Theory of Caring guided the intervention by promoting patient-centered communication. W. Edwards Deming’s Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model provided the framework for this approach. Patients aged 45-75 years due for colon cancer screening were identified using the electronic health record (EHR) in …

Deep Learning For Underwater Manatee Counting And Tracking, Theodor Owchariw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris), a threatened marine mammal often found in coastal waters, require accurate monitoring to inform conservation strategies. However, traditional counting methods are hindered by observer bias and surface distortions. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) address these challenges using captured aerial footage of manatees, demonstrating the potential of artificial intelligence for automating manatee counting. Still, various challenges arise hindering accurate counts.

Building on these studies, this work advances artificial intelligence with underwater footage, instance segmentation, data augmentation, and pseudo-labeling to automate manatee counting in data-scarce environments. Three experiments were conducted using 10%, 60%, and 90% …

Social Development Dynamics Of Students In Inclusive Education In Indonesia, Nur Hidayat Nh

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan

This narrative review analyses the social development of students with special needs in Indonesian inclusive schools by synthesising five high-quality empirical studies (indexed SINTA 1–3) published between 2018 and 2023. Addressing three research questions, the synthesis reveals heterogeneous and generally limited social development trajectories shaped primarily by ecological interactions rather than inherent disability characteristics. Key barriers include symbolic inclusion, inadequate teacher training in multimodal strategies, low peer acceptance, and systemic resource deficits, whereas facilitators encompass contextualised multimodal communication, active family involvement, and supportive institutional leadership. Effective interventions depend on coordinated teacher–parent–peer triangulation, leveraging local sign language, structured peer-mediated activities, and …

Northern Illinois University’S Child Development And Family Center “Diversity Bookshelf” Audit, Marinelle Ortega Dec 2025

Northern Illinois University’S Child Development And Family Center “Diversity Bookshelf” Audit, Marinelle Ortega

Honors Capstones

A classroom bookshelf diversity audit allows students to find “mirrors, windows, and glass sliding doors” in the books they choose to read. This metaphor means students will find their identities reflected in books (mirrors), learn about other’s identities (windows), and finally, be put into other perspectives (glass sliding doors). In this diversity audit, a selection of 100 books at the Child Development and Family Center at Northern Illinois University were read and analyzed. Findings showed diverse representation for race, ethnicity, and family type. However, showed a need for books containing content with religion, disability, and linguistic diversity, as most books …

Explaining Pension Trends And Recent Pension Performance, Nathan Jeppson, John A. Ruddy, David F. Salerno

Pennsylvania Economic Review

Due to significant unfunded liabilities, many employer-sponsored retirement plans both domestically and internationally are shifting away from defined benefit (DB) pension plans to defined contribution (DC) plans. This is especially the case in private industry. Many expected that the COVID-19 pandemic would cause the funding status of DB plans to worsen. However, the opposite occurred. This is primarily due to decreased life expectancies and improved financial market performance. We utilize a 2004-2021 dataset that contains state level GDP, revenue, pension, and life expectancy data to study U.S. state DB pension plans. We are able to explain over 80% of the …

Housing Burden And Insurance Expenditures, Melanie M. Lytell Dec 2025

Housing Burden And Insurance Expenditures, Melanie M. Lytell

Honors Capstones

Housing costs shape the way families spend on protection and security. This study looks at how the share of income devoted to housing, the housing burden, influences household spending on four types of insurance: vehicle, life, personal, and health. Using data from nearly 92,000 households and regression models that account for state differences, I find that even small increases in housing burden shift insurance choices in meaningful ways. A one‑percentage‑point rise in housing burden is linked to a 2.1% increase in vehicle insurance spending and a 0.5% increase in life insurance, but a 0.7% decrease in personal insurance and a …

Epidemiology, Presentation, And Diagnosis Of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Children And Adolescents, Bisher Alsabbagh, Whard Alsabbagh

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in children and adolescents has increased substantially over recent decades, paralleling rising rates of pediatric obesity and metabolic risk. Youth-onset T2DM is characterized by significant insulin resistance accompanied by an inadequate compensatory insulin response, resulting in progressive hyperglycemia and early beta-cell dysfunction. Incidence varies widely among racial and ethnic groups, with the highest rates observed in non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian American, and Pacific Islander youth. Risk factors include obesity, family history, high-risk ethnicity, pubertal insulin resistance, prenatal metabolic exposures, and comorbid conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Clinical presentation ranges …
