Understanding Lyme Iaci: Implications For Camp Nurses, Mary Tobin
Understanding Lyme Iaci: Implications For Camp Nurses, Mary Tobin
CompassPoint
Lyme Infection-Associated Chronic Illness (Lyme IACI) is a term adopted by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to describe persistent, often debilitating symptoms that follow Lyme disease infection. Affecting an estimated 10–20% of individuals treated for Lyme disease, Lyme IACI includes fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, cognitive dysfunction, and sleep disturbances that can last months or even years despite standard antibiotic therapy (NASEM, 2025). Unlike acute Lyme disease, Lyme IACI is not well understood and lacks validated diagnostic tools or biomarkers, making it a challenge to diagnose or treat for clinicians and caregivers—especially those working with children in …

Having appropriate and qualified healthcare staff aligns with safe, well-coordinated services. When a camp identifies what health services they wish to provide (e.g., screening, medication management, delegation, documentation, communicable disease planning), they are better able to determine who has the appropriate education and credentials to provide those services. Additional variables to consider when making decisions about camp healthcare staff include the camp’s distance from higher-level care, risks associated with camp activities, and populations being served.

Nursing At Summer Camp: Piloting A Novel Clinical Rotation Experience For Undergraduates In Pediatrics, Vanessa Lugo

Nursing schools have traditionally relied on inpatient settings as the primary venue for clinical placement for undergraduate courses. However, the availability of clinical placement sites has diminished in recent years for reasons that include faculty retirements, problems with administrative support and coordination in large hospital systems, and intensified competition among health-profession schools for a limited pool of rotation sites (Chesney et al., 2021; American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2022). Clinical placement sites became especially sparse during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many facilities prohibited on-site student instruction (Kaveh et al., 2022; Ridgway et al., 2022). Nursing schools in rural areas …

Camp healthcare providers must rely on current, rapidly changing, and discipline-specific scientific evidence to care for individuals, families, and communities. Healthcare providers for camps face challenges in finding and using research evidence to inform their practice in the moment of need, in part because of the unique characteristics of their care settings. In fall of 2023, the Alliance for Camp Health (ACH) Research Committee conducted a study to determine the most frequent barriers to research utilization reported by camp healthcare providers and administrators. The study identified barriers that the researchers then classified into four categories: personal characteristics of the providers, …

Every summer, millions of children, youth, and young adult staff members gather in camp communities seeking adventures, community, and growth. They arrive carrying stories of who they are and who they might become. While some camp professionals have explored the existing research on motivation, many still struggle with this question: how do we move beyond temporary, programmatic reward-driven compliance or temporary entertainment-centered enthusiasm to spark genuine, sustained engagement that transforms both individuals and the community?

Talkin' 'Bout My Genderation: The Effect Of Gender Bias On Arbitral Representation, Amy E. Allen
Talkin' 'Bout My Genderation: The Effect Of Gender Bias On Arbitral Representation, Amy E. Allen
Washington Journal of Social & Environmental Justice
Gender bias is rampant in all industries, and the world of arbitration is no exception. For decades, members of the field of arbitration have debated the suitability of women as arbitrators. This led to a broader discussion regarding different styles of arbitration, how or if these styles are related to the gender of the arbitrator, and whether one arbitration style is more effective than others. This paper begins with a brief assessment of the history of arbitration, as well as a more focused overview of the history of women in arbitration. Next, the paper questions the reasons for gender disparity …
Rights Of Nature, Wrongs For The Commons: Risks Of Assigning Legal Personhood To The Rivers Of Washington State, Srinandan Ramachandran
Rights Of Nature, Wrongs For The Commons: Risks Of Assigning Legal Personhood To The Rivers Of Washington State, Srinandan Ramachandran
Washington Journal of Social & Environmental Justice
The Rights of Nature (“RoN”) movement, which seeks to grant legal personhood to natural entities, has recently gained traction in Washington State and globally. While intended to enhance environmental protection and Indigenous sovereignty, RoN burdens commons governance by expanding the right to exclude. This paper advances a critique of proposals to grant legal personhood to rivers in Washington State, highlighting conflicts with standing, liability, and the jurisprudential tenets of legal personhood. RoN undermines equitable usufructuary access to the commons, or lands and waters without exclusionary rights, thereby impeding marginalized peoples’ ability to utilize shared resources. Instead of assigning legal personhood …
De Facto Death Sentences For Misdemeanor Offenses: A Right To Medication For Opioid Use Disorder Induction Under The Washington Law Against Discrimination, Alena R. Sharp
Washington Journal of Social & Environmental Justice
The opioid crisis remains one of the deadliest public health emergencies in the United States, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities, including people in the criminal legal system. Medication for opioid use disorder is the recognized standard of care for treating opioid use disorder. Despite the fact that medications have also been shown to reduce overdose deaths and relapse rates, many prisons and jails continue to impose blanket prohibitions on medications for opioid use disorder for nonpregnant individuals, placing them at an elevated risk for acute withdrawal, suicide, and fatal overdose.
This comment examines the systemic barriers to access medication for opioid …

How Sports Culture Affects Mental Health: United States And Latin America, Isabelle Westling
Saint John’s Preparatory School Student Work
This paper examines how sports culture in the United States of America and in Latin America shapes the mental health and emotional well-being of student-athletes. To answer this question, I read and examined papers and articles originating from both regions. These articles helped me understand cultural implications and shortcomings from both sides. A number of these articles are in Spanish and translated by me throughout my research. My results show that in United States there are a variety of sources of stress. Pressures from school and academics are prevalent as scholarships and future careers are dependent on it. With that, …

Ink And Ignorance: How Limitations In Research, Captivity And Recognition Obscure Cephalopod Science, Jacob Weniger
Saint John’s Preparatory School Student Work
This paper analyzes what the limitations are in modern ocean research and how they relate to the study of cephalopods. To understand this, the paper reviews many known cephalopod species to understand what is unknown about their biology. Research was then conducted to assess why certain aspects of species are unknown. Then each gap the specifications of the limitation and the solutions or strategies to overcome them was examined. This led to examinations of research tools, analysis bias, and public views. Understanding these issues is of great importance because it gives a comprehensive lay out of what needs to be …
How Did Creative Expression Impact Advocacy And Accessibility For Female Reproductive Freedom During Second Wave Feminism In America?, Vivian Fitch
Saint John’s Preparatory School Student Work
This paper analyzes how poetry, visual art, and rhetoric have impacted accessibility for female reproductive freedom. The time period is 1960s through the 1990s; referred to as second wave feminism. The feminist art pieces examined are mediums such as poetry, visual art, and rhetoric. To find the implication of these art forms, I inspected each form of art and focused on literary devices, artistic technique, and Aristotle’s method for persuasive language. I conclude that art has a deep emotional, social, and legal effect on society. This art is accessible, conveys a clear point, and is rhetorically complex, which inspired change …

Have you ever looked in your closet and wondered where your clothing came from? Or stared into the black mirror of your phone and questioned how it was made? Certainly, you know where you bought it, but are you sure of where it was before then? Unless you sew your own clothes or communicate by carrier pigeon, these questions may not have crossed your mind. However, I urge everyone to look around their home—you will find objects with questionable origins. This shift has brought increased focus to supply chains, elevating transparency as a critical element of corporate environmental, social, and …

Improving Nursing Staff Knowledge To Provide High-Value Dementia Care, Kimone L. Johns
Improving Nursing Staff Knowledge To Provide High-Value Dementia Care, Kimone L. Johns
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This staff education project aimed to increase nurses' knowledge to provide high-value dementia care. At the project site, nurses indicated low self-confidence and knowledge in providing quality dementia care. Providing low-value care to persons with dementia (PwD) contributes to suboptimal clinical outcomes and poor quality of life and adversely influences nurses' satisfaction. Therefore, the project question addressed whether a staff education program would increase nurses' self-perceived ability and confidence to provide high-value dementia care. The staff education objective was to enhance patient-centered dementia care, provision of quality care that can improve quality of life (QoL) of PwD. Twenty peer-reviewed journal …

Expanding Epilepsy Representation: On Education And Awareness, Aliyah Wise
Honors Projects
The present-day American public education system has evolved to try to teach young students about more cultures and people of different lifestyles. However, despite these reforms to push for an inclusive education system, there is still minimal effort to teach students about disabilities and the people who live with them. As a student living with epilepsy, I have observed a lack of education or conversation about this disability. The purpose of this research project is to ask: How does miseducation on epilepsy contribute to harmful stereotypes and lead to real issues for people living with this disability? How should neurotypical …

Mobility-Restricting Covenants In Business Contracts: The Case Of Franchising, Francine Lafontaine, Lorenzo G. Luisetto, J. J. Prescott
Law & Economics Working Papers
Several studies show that restrictive covenants in employment contracts, such as noncompete agreements, may affect employees in detrimental ways, including by reducing mobility and suppressing wages. While such concerns are real, these clauses also have the potential to serve legitimate business purposes by helping companies protect valuable information, which can encourage investment and training and enhance social welfare. This paper explores the use of several types of covenants, including noncompetes but also confidentiality and post-relationship non-recruitment clauses, in franchise contracts, an important and accessible category of business contracts. Many of these contracts impose restrictive covenants on franchisees but also on …
