Early-stage breast cancers resistant to neoadjuvant therapy (NAT), characterized by high residual cancer burden (RCB) after treatment, have an increased risk of metastatic recurrence. Here, we show that circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) detected using a tumor-informed test (1) can improve risk stratification of patients with NAT-resistant tumors (RCB-II/RCB-III) and (2) predict response to NAT. Stratification using ctDNA status at pretreatment or post-NAT and ctDNA dynamics identified NAT-resistant tumors with a significantly decreased risk of metastatic recurrence. ctDNA clearance as early as week 3 across receptor subtypes predicted favorable responses to NAT, including immunotherapies. Interestingly, less than a fifth of patients …

The human brain contains a milieu of extracellular matrix (ECM) components that promote normal development and physiology. ECM signaling pathways are often dysregulated in brain pathologies including the malignant cancer glioblastoma (GBM). Here, we used single-cell spatial transcriptomic platforms to map the expression of nearly 400 ECM genes in matching non-cancerous brain and GBM samples. At least four different GBM cell populations have been identified that show unique ECM expression profiles and spatial enrichment in distinct intratumor regions. Spatial mapping demonstrates largely non-overlapping expression signatures of ECM components in GBM stromal cell types, particularly in vascular endothelial cells and microglia/macrophages. …

Evidence is emerging that perturbed postnatal gut microbiota development is causally related to childhood undernutrition. Clinical trials in undernourished Bangladeshi children found that a polysaccharide-rich, microbiota-directed complementary food (MDCF-2) designed to repair this perturbation produced superior ponderal and linear growth compared to a standard ready-to-use supplementary food. Subsequent analyses disclosed several candidate bioactive polysaccharides in the MDCF and their bacterial targets, notably strains of

A landlord initiated a licensee holdover proceeding. The tenant, son of the former rent-controlled tenant, moved for summary judgment on his succession defense, claiming he primarily resided with his deceased father. The court granted the tenant's motion, finding sufficient evidence of co-residency for the statutory period, even considering the father's time in a nursing home before death. The landlord failed to raise material issues of fact, and the petition was dismissed, establishing the tenant's right to succeed to the rent-controlled tenancy.

College students often report high levels of stress and anxiety, which can negatively impact academic performance and overall well-being. Physical activity (PA) is widely recognized for its mental health benefits; however, PA encompasses various domains. Subtypes such as Leisure-Time Physical Activity (LTPA), Occupational Physical Activity (OPA), Transportation Physical Activity (TPA), and Domestic Physical Activity (DPA) may not yield the same psychological outcomes. Understanding how specific PA domains relate to mental health may offer insight into how daily routines influence psychological well-being in urban college students. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether distinct types of PA are differentially associated with …

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and affects men and women differently, highlighting the importance of understanding vascular regulation across both sexes. Regular consumption of dietary capsaicin (found in spicy peppers) has been associated with reduced CVD risk, potentially through improvements in vascular function. However, the mechanisms by which dietary capsaicin influences vascular health are not well understood. Passive limb movement-induced hyperemia (PLM) is a non-invasive technique used to assess vascular health. During PLM, a limb (typically the leg) is moved passively—without muscle contraction—by an external force, such as a researcher or mechanical …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Excess body fat may place unnecessary physiological stress on the body and negatively impact the wellbeing of law enforcement officers (LEOs). It is crucial to have an accurate predictor of body fat status to guide programming that promotes healthy body fat levels. This is especially important for LEOs who may be sitting for extended periods (e.g., researching, writing reports) or must respond suddenly to address a physically demanding task (e.g., pursuing a suspect). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the specificity and sensitivity of BMI compared to skinfold measures of body composition in active LEOs. METHODS: Twenty-three …

Shoulder Strength In Division I Baseball Pitchers Over The Course Of The Season, Zachary T. Sylvester, Richard J. Boergers
Shoulder Strength In Division I Baseball Pitchers Over The Course Of The Season, Zachary T. Sylvester, Richard J. Boergers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The high rate of injuries in baseball pitchers has been linked to increased pitch velocity. Monitoring arm health through shoulder strength testing may link weakness with dysfunction or fatigue. PURPOSE: To measure shoulder strength at three points during the season (pre, mid, post) and identify shoulder muscle weakness. METHODS: Participants (N=14) were Division I baseball pitchers (age=20.36±2.13; weight=92.36±3.96 kg; height=188.32±4.66 cm). Participants were asked not to stretch or warm up prior to testing. Shoulder strength (flexion [FLX], internal rotation [IR], external rotation [ER], and scapular retraction [SR]) was assessed using an Activforce2 handheld dynamometer. For FLX, participants lay supine with …

Indian clubs (ICs) have re-emerged as a popular training tool for exercise in the fitness industry today but there is limited scientific evidence about the benefits. More research is needed on the various claims made about potential benefits of training with ICs. PURPOSE: To examine the acute effects of a standardized upper-extremity warm-up with and without ICs on shoulder internal rotation (IR) range of motion (ROM), shoulder girdle stability, and perceptual and affective responses. METHODS: Eighteen healthy, resistance-trained adults [Age: 23.5 ± 2.3 yrs; Height: 1.68 ± 0.72 m; Weight: 78.7 ± 13.8 kg; 10 male, 8 female] completed two …

Acute Responses To Indian Clubs As An External Load During A Standardized Warm-Up, Tamar Sabo, Alex Rothstein, Carol Ewing Garber, Paul M. Gallo
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Indian club swinging (ICS) provides a low-intensity, dynamic, and repetitive option to increase intensity while performing a warm-up for the upper extremity. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare shoulder mobility and isokinetic (ISK) measures after performing a warm-up (WU) with ICS compared with two other WU conditions. METHODS: 18 participants [Age: 23 (3) yrs, Height: 167 (12) cm, Weight: 80.3 (19.4) kg] performed three WU routines: 2lb ICS, 2lb dumbbell [DB], and no external load [CON]). The WU consisted of 15 regressed movements to mimic the components of traditional ICS. After each WU condition average and maximum active …

Investigating Flexibility Improvements With Blood Flow Restriction In A Senior Yoga Program, Emma Sarrazin-Boespflug, Andreas Bergdahl
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
While blood flow restriction (BFR) in combination with low intensity exercise is known to stimulate muscle hypertrophy, its influence on flexibility is yet to be determined.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine if adding BFR to a Yoga intervention results in greater flexibility improvements in older adults (OA).
METHODS: 25 OA (20 F, 5 M; mean age of 69.3 ± 5.7), participated in a 4-week, bi-weekly, 1hour Yoga session on Zoom. Participants were randomized to a BFR group (n=13) or a control group (CON) (n=12). The BFR group received 4 bands to place on their proximal arms and …

The Effects Of Kanpu Masatsu On Sleep Quality And Fatigue Among Older Adults, Aidan Miranda, Yessica Luna Beltran
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sleep quality is crucial for overall health, particularly among older adults. Kanpu Masatsu (KM), a traditional Japanese self-massage technique using dry towels, has been associated with health benefits for this population. PURPOSE: This study explores the effects of performing Kanpu Masatsu before bedtime on sleep quality and fatigue levels. METHODS: Twelve healthy older adults (3 men and 9 women; age 60.67 ± 1.69 years) were recruited to monitor their sleep over 14 days using a Fitbit Sense 2. During the second week, participants performed a whole-body Kanpu Masatsu within 10 minutes before sleep. Sleep quality was assessed via Fitbit’s sleep …

Lateral Hip And Anterior Groin Pain—Division I Women’S Lacrosse, Ronit V. Patel, Justin Chu, Andreas Stamatis Dr.
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
CASE HISTORY: A 22-year-old Division I female lacrosse athlete with prior left ACL reconstruction presented with progressive right lateral hip and anterior groin pain, intermittently radiating to the lateral thigh. She denied neurological symptoms, mechanical catching/locking, or instability, but reported occasional popping. Symptoms were minimally relieved by physical therapy, cupping, and dry needling. PHYSICAL EXAM: Initial: focal tenderness over the right lateral hip (TFL) and mild anterior hip-flexor tenderness; FABER/FADIR reproduced pain. Subsequent exams: full ROM, 5/5 strength, normal gait; FABER/FADIR negative; Trendelenburg, Ober, log roll, and heel strike negative. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSES: Labral tear; FAI; gluteal tendinopathy (minimus/medius); greater trochanteric …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Balancing performance demands with self-care is essential for maintaining psychological health. Mental toughness (MT) and self-compassion (SC) are often framed as opposing constructs; however, athlete data suggest mindfulness (MF) may integrate them. Whether this extends to non-athlete adults is unclear. PURPOSE: To test whether MF mediates the MT–SC relationship in a non-athlete population. METHODS: Eighty-four adults (M_age = 44.4, SD = 14.9; 57.1% male) were recruited from a community outreach program. Missing data were addressed with 20 item-level imputations. Measures included the Mental Toughness Index (α = .89, ω = .90) and the Self-Compassion Scale excluding MF …
