Cultivating Connections: Empowering Agricultural Community Members Through Collaborative Care, Kearyn E. Nelsen
Cultivating Connections: Empowering Agricultural Community Members Through Collaborative Care, Kearyn E. Nelsen
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: Agriculture and mental health – two words not typically used in the same sentence; however, considering the rate of suicide among those working in the agriculture profession is significantly higher than the general population, the need for both awareness and action is critically important. Despite a lack of research specific to occupational therapy and the agricultural population, occupational therapists on an interprofessional healthcare team are uniquely positioned to serve this population. Interprofessional collaboration is essential when serving agricultural community members, whose needs involve a complexity of physical, mental, social, and environmental factors, each impacting the overall health and well-being …
Occupation-Based Transition Planning Guide For High School Students With Disabilites., Kelsey Milleson
Occupation-Based Transition Planning Guide For High School Students With Disabilites., Kelsey Milleson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: The transition from high school to adulthood is a critical period influencing independence, employment, and community participation for students with disabilities (Carroll et al., 2025; Rosner et al., 2020). Despite mandates under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), many students experience poor postsecondary outcomes, including limited employment and increased reliance on caregivers (Benson et al., 2021; U.S. Department of Education, 2020). Effective transition planning should begin early, be individualized, and emphasize real-world skill development such as daily living, vocational skills, and self-advocacy (Cleary & Persch, 2020). However, school-based programs often lack consistency, structure, and performance-based outcome measures, reducing …
Increasing Leisure Exploration In Older Adults As They Age, Jackie Middendorf
Increasing Leisure Exploration In Older Adults As They Age, Jackie Middendorf
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: As individuals age, it is common for them to experience deficits that impact how and where they age (Dieuleveult et al., 2017; Nakahara & Yokoi, 2024; Park et al., 2021; Rimland et al., 2016; Szanton et al., 2016). These deficits commonly impact functional mobility and their ability to complete self-cares, leading to them having to leave their homes or receive services (Dieuleveult et al., 2017; Feller & Baker, 2022; Lindquist et al., 2021; Mayo et al., 2021; Spang et al., 2024). Along with deficits with functional mobility and self-cares, older adults experience decreases in their social engagement and leisure …
The Role Of Occupational Therapy In The Prevention Of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (Suid), Natalie Ryan Mcfarren
The Role Of Occupational Therapy In The Prevention Of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (Suid), Natalie Ryan Mcfarren
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: Each year, 3,700 infants die from SUID; this equates to about ten infants per day. SUID is an umbrella term that covers three separate subcategories: suffocation and strangulation in bed, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and unknown (Cribs for Kids, 2026). Suffocation and strangulation in bed is the only subcategory that is 100% preventable with safe sleep practices, while the risk of SIDS can be decreased by adhering to safe sleep guidelines. While the prevalence of SUID has decreased since the 1992 Back to Sleep campaign, current data indicate a plateau, if not a slight increase, in SUID cases …

Digging Into Prevention: An Occupational Therapy Based Work-Related Upper Extremity Injury Prevention Program For Extraction And Mining Industries, Karli Teresa March
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: Extraction and mining industries, which play a significant role in the economic structure of Sweetwater County, Wyoming, consistently report some of the highest rates of work-related injury. Upper extremity based musculoskeletal injuries are particularly common and often lead to significant impairment and/or surgical intervention, impacting productivity, increasing lost-workdays, and contributing to long-term health outcomes. These injuries are often due to a dynamic interaction of personal, contextual, and task-based factors including fatigue, level of experience, organizational procedures and policies, repetitive motions, sustained forceful exertions, awkward positioning, and vibration exposure. Current prevention efforts are often reactive rather than proactive, with interventions …
Introduction Of Occupational Therapy Into A Suburban Supportive Housing Organization, Madeline Kuntz
Introduction Of Occupational Therapy Into A Suburban Supportive Housing Organization, Madeline Kuntz
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Abstract: Unhoused individuals experience compounded barriers beyond housing access and are often underserved within occupational therapy practice. This doctoral capstone project partnered with a nonprofit residential program to develop a research-informed onboarding manual grounded in the holistic occupational therapy framework, Model of Human Occupation (MOHO, O’Brien, 2017). The manual was designed to clarify expectations of the supportive housing program, address diverse resident needs, and promote independence as the organization expands. Development was informed by a comprehensive literature review and informal needs assessment of the organization, identifying anticipatory barriers and supports commonly experienced prior to program entry. Key areas of need …

Pathways To Participation: Enhancing Inclusion For Individuals With Idd, Katie Koxlien
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: Youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) continue to experience barriers to meaningful community participation despite policies promoting inclusive community-based services (Friedman, 2017). Sensory sensitivities, difficulty with transitions, and overstimulating environments frequently limit engagement and increase anxiety or behavioral responses when appropriate supports are not present (Bagatell et al., 2022; Dean et al., 2018; Tint et al., 2017). Research indicates that inclusion requires intentional programming that incorporates structured supports, consistent routines, and opportunities for meaningful engagement (Edwards et al., 2021; Hall, 2016).
Methods: The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a week long sensory exploration camp for …

Empowering Caregivers: An Occupational Therapy-Informed Educational Program For Dementia Care In Rural Communities, Maria Lynn Johnson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Purpose: Hospitalization presents significant risks for individuals with dementia, including increased behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD), delirium, functional decline, and reduced occupational engagement (Boltz et al., 2023; Teichmann et al., 2019; Zwingmann et al., 2020). Acute care environments are often overstimulating, unfamiliar, and task-oriented, which can exacerbate cognitive impairment and contribute to caregiver distress. Despite strong evidence supporting nonpharmacological, occupation-based interventions, structured engagement opportunities are rarely integrated into acute care workflows (Burgdorf et al., 2023; Faeder et al., 2023). This doctoral capstone project aimed to develop occupation-based dementia activities for use during hospitalization while equipping formal and informal caregivers with …

Intermittent Phrenic Afferent Activation Induces Phrenic Motor Plasticity, Nicole M. Popp, Taylor C. Holmes, Elizabeth A. Rozycki, Kristi A. Streeter
Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications
Approaches such as electrical stimulation of the phrenic neuromuscular system are currently used in humans to manage breathing impairments. We recently showed that electrical stimulation of the diaphragm muscle induces phrenic afferent-dependent plasticity. These findings highlight the need to better understand the mechanisms of afferent-mediated plasticity to guide and improve the development of novel therapies using electrical stimulation. Here, we tested the hypothesis that intermittent activation of large-diameter phrenic afferents induces phrenic motor plasticity, which, like other forms of plasticity, is pattern sensitive. We delivered inspiratory-triggered electrical stimulation using a narrow pulse width (0.1 ms) to preferentially activate large-diameter afferents, …

Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) alters hemodynamics and drives regional remodeling, yet the influence of severity and duration on constitutive properties is undefined. We quantified mechanical responses from CoA to identify constitutive parameters capturing stiffening across clinical severities and durations. Mild (≤ 12 mmHg), intermediate (13–20 mmHg), and severe (> 20 mmHg) CoA was created in rabbits for short, long, and prolonged durations (~ 1, 3, or 22 weeks, respectively). Stress–stretch curves from proximal and distal regions were fit with multiple constitutive models (Linear Elastic, Neo-Hookean, Yeoh, Ogden, Mooney–Rivlin, Holzapfel). Model performance was evaluated by normalized RMSE and R², with …

Social safety and social security are concepts that help explain a community's well-being by assessing how it manages and mitigate existing, or perceived, risks. However, these terms are often conflated, which can limit understanding, particularly in areas with unstable living conditions. This study explores both concepts in the context of residents living in slums. As the number of displaced people grows, slums and informal settlements are becoming increasingly common worldwide, making it essential to clarify these concepts. Residents of slums face numerous hazards, including crime, violence, inadequate housing, overcrowding, and limited access to essential services. To measure social safety and …

Socio-Spatial Patterns Of Suicide Mortality In The United States, Kushagra Tiwari, M. Amin Rahimian, Marie-Laure Charpignon, Philippe J. Giabbanelli, Praveen Kumar
VMASC Publications
Suicides cause more than 49,000 deaths per year in the United States, including 55% associated with the use of a firearm. Across states and counties in the US, suicide mortality exhibits substantial geographical and sociodemographic heterogeneity. However, the role of large-scale social networks in shaping this variation remains underexplored. To assess how both the risk of suicide mortality and the effect of firearm restriction policies propagate through inter-county social ties, we integrate data on county-level suicide mortality (2010–2022) and the Facebook Social Connectedness Index (SCI), a continuous measure of the strength of social ties between counties used to derive weighted …

Synergistic Sensitization Of Pancreatic Cancer Cells By Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields And Cold Atmospheric Plasma Via Amplifying Ros And Apoptotic Signaling, Zobia Minhas, Edwin A. Oshin, Lifang Yang, Chunqi Jiang, Siqi Guo
Bioelectrics Publications
Pancreatic cancer remains a highly lethal malignancy, with standard therapies offering limited benefits in advanced stages; thus, novel strategies that exploit specific cancer cell vulnerabilities are urgently needed. Building on our previous findings that nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEF) combined with cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) produce enhanced cytotoxicity, this study investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying this synergy. Pan02 pancreatic cancer cells were subjected to nsPEF, CAP, or a combination of both. We assessed cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and mitochondrial integrity using metabolic assays, flow cytometry, and fluorescence microscopy. Apoptotic markers were evaluated via Western blotting and caspase …

Targeting Ptp4a3 And Kvx-053 Mitigates Alcohol-Amplified Sars-Cov-2 Spike Protein-Induced Acute Lung Injury, Pavel A. Solopov, Ruben Manuel Luciano Colunga Biancatelli, Elizabeth R. Sharlow, John S. Lazo, John D. Catavas
Bioelectrics Publications
Introduction: Chronic alcohol exposure is associated with increased vulnerability to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and emerging evidence suggests that this susceptibility extends to the severe respiratory manifestations of COVID- 19. The SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein S1 subunit (S1SP) can independently trigger robust inflammatory and vascular injury responses in the lung, and our prior work demonstrated that chronic alcohol consumption markedly intensifies these effects in mice. PTP4A3 phosphatase is a key regulator of inflammation and endothelial barrier function. In this study, we investigated whether the PTP4A3 inhibitor KVX-053 can counteract alcohol-enhanced S1SP-induced lung injury in K18-hACE2 mice.
Methods: Animals were maintained …
Nanosecond Electric Pulses As A Novel In Situ Vaccination Strategy For Cancer Treatment: Mechanisms, Challenges And Prospects, Siqi Guo
Bioelectrics Publications
Nanosecond electric pulses (nsEPs) are an emerging pulsed-power technology with unique bioelectric characteristics distinct from conventional long-pulse electroporation. As a tunable physical modality, nsEPs can modulate intracellular structures, membrane dynamics, and signaling pathways. Increasing evidence supports nsEPs as a promising non-thermal tumor ablation approach due to their high spatial precision, preservation of critical tissue structures, and minimal adverse effects. One of the most significant discoveries associated with nsEP tumor ablation is the induction of potent systemic antitumor immunity, particularly in situ vaccination (ISV) effects and, in some cases, abscopal effects against distant untreated tumors. Substantial evidence demonstrates that nsEPs can …

Exposure to hydrochloric acid (HCl) can provoke severe chronic pulmonary injury. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their smaller airways, higher respiratory rate, and stronger inflammatory response; yet no countermeasures exist for HCl-induced chronic lung injury in the pediatric population. We have previously demonstrated the involvement of HSP90 during HCl-induced lung injury in pre-pubertal (p24) mice, who develop stronger persistent inflammation with higher NLRP3 inflammasome activation, but less pulmonary fibrosis compared to adults. Here, we tested the hypothesis that post-treatment with the second-generation HSP90 inhibitor AT13387 (Onalespib), administered subcutaneously beginning 24 h after HCl instillation, would prevent HCl-induced chronic lung …
The Sec And Climate Litigation, Lisa Benjamin
The Sec And Climate Litigation, Lisa Benjamin
Lewis & Clark Law Review
The controversy surrounding the SEC’s climate-related financial disclosure rule continues. This Essay updates my previous work on this issue, where I identified two opportunities and two obstacles to the SEC promulgating final rules on climate-related financial risk disclosures. The two opportunities were a shifting political landscape under the then-Biden Administration (which took a whole-of-government approach to addressing the climate crisis) and rising investor concern over the risks that climate change posed to their investments. The two obstacles I identified were business resistance to disclosure rules, and rising judicial hostility to the SEC. Today, the political landscape has shifted dramatically and …

A Strategic Approach To “E”Sg Reporting, Taylor Nchako
Lewis & Clark Law Review
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors have emerged as an important investment tool for the financial sector to address climate change. While the federal government has abandoned ESG disclosure, U.S. firms still face reporting obligations domestically and abroad. States across the country have proposed or passed two types of disclosure laws: greenhouse gas emissions disclosure and climate risk disclosure. These state-level efforts mirror actions in the European Union, Canada, and other jurisdictions in which U.S. firms operate.
As ESG disclosure standards are adopted in jurisdictions around the world, these standards are undergoing various advancements, reductions, and contestations. These shifts in …
Taking Off The “Blindfold”: Exploring Montana’S Public Trust Doctrine And The Right To A Clean And Healthful Environment After Held V. Montana, Lizzy Gazeley
Lewis & Clark Law Review
As global average temperatures continue to rise, the threat of climate change looms closer. To evade climate catastrophe, greenhouse gas emissions will need to be substantially reduced. Despite climate change’s imminent risks, in the United States, both the federal government and states remain resistant to transitioning away from fossil fuel energy sources. To combat this government inaction, some litigants have turned to an ancient doctrine.
