Who Gets To Sue? Legal Standing After Fda V. Alliance For Hippocratic Medicine, Rachael Houston, Robert Stephen Earnest

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

This article examines how courts are invoking FDA v. Alliance to define the limits of legal standing in litigation—specifically, in a reproductive health context. Reproductive health, as used here, encompasses a broad range of medical, legal, and policy issues related to abortion access, gender-affirming care, pregnancy, and professional regulation of services connected to reproductive decision-making. It includes the provision of and restrictions on reproductive healthcare services, the regulation of speech related to those services (e.g., advertising and advocacy), and the institutional responses to contested laws and agency rules affecting bodily autonomy, medical practice, and expressive conduct. Drawing on an original …

This collaborative project connects partners within UM Wellness, PEAS Farm, the Missoula Food Bank and Community Center, and the Big Sky Culinary Institute. Our research includes applied learning with these organizations by hosting a variety of speaker series presentations and coordinating a cooking workshop. We collected quantitative and qualitative …

Non-Pharmacological Interventions For The Management And Prevention Of Hypertensive Disorders In Pregnancy: A Review Of The Literature, Shenelle K. Smith, Laurena E. Lepp Jan 2026

Non-Pharmacological Interventions For The Management And Prevention Of Hypertensive Disorders In Pregnancy: A Review Of The Literature, Shenelle K. Smith, Laurena E. Lepp

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), including preeclampsia (PE), are a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the United States, rates of HDP continue to rise and are associated with preterm birth, fetal growth restriction, and long-term cardiovascular disease. Current management focuses only on low-dose aspirin for prevention. Surveillance and timely delivery remain the only definitive treatment for preeclampsia. This highlights a critical gap in prevention. Emerging evidence suggests that non-pharmacological interventions–particularly nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle modification–may reduce the risk and severity of HDP. These approaches align with midwifery models of care emphasizing prevention, education, …

Fear Of Childbirth As A Perinatal Comorbidity: An Integrative Review, Michelle T. Mcmanus, Ashely N. Payne

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fear of childbirth (FOC) and tokophobia have a significant impact on one in every five pregnant women and is associated with enhanced levels of anxiety, depression, pre-traumatic stress, and has led to increased requests for elective cesarean sections. Given the influence that it has on birth mode and perceived birth experience as well as postpartum wellbeing, it stands to reason that FOC represents an often-overlooked aspect of perinatal mental health.
This capstone reviews cohort, cross-sectional, randomized, and quasi-experimental studies examining prevalence, correlations, and consequences of FOC. It evaluates antenatal education, midwife-led support, and cognitive behavioral therapy as potential interventions. Outcomes …

Integrative Approaches And Data Analysis For Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Data, Teng Long Jan 2026

Integrative Approaches And Data Analysis For Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Data, Teng Long

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

The rapid growth of single-cell RNA sequencing and transcriptomic datasets has created major computational challenges in causal discovery, representation learning, and biologically faithful data generation. To address these challenges, this dissertation presents three complementary deep learning frameworks for the analysis and modeling of transcriptomic data. Together, these methods form an integrative computational toolkit for understanding complex biological systems from high-dimensional and heterogeneous gene expression data.

First, this dissertation introduces DAG-VAERL, a causal discovery framework that integrates variational autoencoders, graph neural networks, reinforcement learning, and attention mechanisms to infer directed acyclic graphs for gene regulatory network analysis. DAG-VAERL improves causal structure …

Data-Driven Climate Damage Functions For Capital Formation: Estimating The Climate Penalty Using Maching Learning, Pramudya Wicaksono Jan 2026

Data-Driven Climate Damage Functions For Capital Formation: Estimating The Climate Penalty Using Maching Learning, Pramudya Wicaksono

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Traditional integrated assessment models assume parametric climate damage functions that may miss nonlinearities, heterogeneity, and dynamic effects on investment. This thesis develops a data-driven climate damage function for capital formation by estimating the predictive relationship between climate conditions and future gross fixed capital formation (% GDP) across 125 countries over 1982–2019. We construct a panel dataset by combining daily ERA5 climate reanalysis data (accessed via the Copernicus Climate Data Store API and aggregated to yearly country-level variables including temperature anomalies, extreme heat days, frost days, precipitation, and solar radiation) with economic indicators from the World Bank World Development Indicators and …

Independent Animal Chiropractic Practice: An Evidence-Based Argument For Autonomy Beyond Veterinary Supervision, Montana Adams Jan 2026

Independent Animal Chiropractic Practice: An Evidence-Based Argument For Autonomy Beyond Veterinary Supervision, Montana Adams

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Animal chiropractic is a growing form of conservative care used to improve mobility, reduce pain, and support neuromusculoskeletal function in animals. Despite evidence suggesting it is both effective and low risk, access remains limited due to inconsistent state regulations. Many jurisdictions require chiropractors to obtain veterinary supervision, referral, or licensure, even when they have completed specialized training and certification in animal chiropractic. This paper evaluates the effectiveness and safety of animal chiropractic while analyzing the impact of current regulatory policies. Research indicates that chiropractic care can improve mobility and reduce spinal conditions in animals when performed by trained professionals. However, …

Mitochondria As Primary Cause Of Neurodegeneration: Evaluating Causality Across Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Als), Alzheimer's, And Parkinson’S Diseases, Makenzie G. Johnson Jan 2026

Mitochondria As Primary Cause Of Neurodegeneration: Evaluating Causality Across Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Als), Alzheimer's, And Parkinson’S Diseases, Makenzie G. Johnson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) have historically been explained through alternate hypotheses despite shared clinical hallmarks that lead to neuron loss. However, these varying explanations could not account for how disease onset begins among other individual issues. This thesis aims to show that mitochondrial dysfunction is a primary driver of neurodegeneration as well as a unifying mechanism shared between the three diseases. Evidence presented in this thesis will show that many issues can arise in mitochondria including issues with energy production, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), apoptosis activation, and calcium regulation. These issues …

Dental Implantology: A Literature Review, Kylie Taylor Jan 2026

Dental Implantology: A Literature Review, Kylie Taylor

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Dental implant therapy is the process of replacing teeth as a form of treatment to improve quality of life, function, and esthetics. The success of the implant depends on the surgical technique, type of prosthetic, and factors related to individual patients. The most important factor for implant success is osseointegration. Osseointegration is a process in which success is determined by the bone quality, the surface characteristics of the implant and the surgical approach. Some approaches to improve the osseointegration of the implant are low-speed drilling, guided surgery, and reduced surgical trauma at the site. The impact of systemic conditions, health …

Kinesiology

Introduction: This study examined muscular and cardiovascular responses to light-intensity aerobic exercise with different blood flow restriction (BFR) protocols. Methods: Ten males performed four protocols on the cycle ergometer: low-intensity exercise with no BFR (LIE), LIE with continuous BFR (CONT-BFR), LIE with intermittent BFR (INT-BFR), and high-intensity exercise (HIE). Each protocol consisted of five 2-min work intervals (INT) at 35% of peak work rate for LIE, CONT-BFR, and INT-BFR and 70% of peak work rate for HIE. During CONT-BFR, cuffs were inflated to 60% of arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) at the start of INT 1 and remained inflated until the …

Music Therapy For Sensory Goals In Autism: Existing Evidence And Next Steps, Faith Cordle, Dorothy Briggs, Nicole Richard Williams, Brooke Irvin Jan 2026

Music Therapy For Sensory Goals In Autism: Existing Evidence And Next Steps, Faith Cordle, Dorothy Briggs, Nicole Richard Williams, Brooke Irvin

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Background: As music therapists, we often assert that our field is evidence-based. Yet as in any health-care field, there is much opportunity to investigate the efficacy of certain techniques. Improving sensory integration and addressing hyper- and hypo-sensitivities are common music therapy goals when working with autistic individuals. Though music-based interventions for sensory goals are often theoretically coherent and anecdotally efficacious, concrete evidence for their efficacy is lacking. The aim of the current study was to a) identify existing research on music-based interventions for sensory outcomes in autistic individuals and b) identify concrete next steps and questions for researchers to investigate, …

Dose-Dependent Developmental Toxicity Of Cisplatin In Zebrafish Embryos, Reagan D. Sellers, Katherine T. Doucet, Jinhee Park, Andrea Florian Jan 2026

Dose-Dependent Developmental Toxicity Of Cisplatin In Zebrafish Embryos, Reagan D. Sellers, Katherine T. Doucet, Jinhee Park, Andrea Florian

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapy drug for treating various types of cancer. Although cisplatin is effective in killing cancer, it can also cause toxic side effects in normal tissues. Because cisplatin can cross the placental barrier, its use during pregnancy is generally avoided, particularly during early embryonic stages of fetal development. Exposure to cytotoxic drugs during embryogenesis may lead to developmental abnormalities, birth defects, or pregnancy complications. Understanding how cisplatin affects early development is therefore important.
Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are an established model for studying developmental toxicity due to their rapid external development, transparent embryos, and genetic similarity to …

Partisipasi Pendidikan Menengah Atas Dan Perkawinan Remaja Perempuan 16–18 Tahun Di Indonesia, Herjuno Bagus Wicaksono, Diahhadi Setyonaluri

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This study examines the relationship between upper secondary education participation and early marriage among women aged 16–18 in Indonesia. Using district-level panel data for 2014–2023, the analysis applies a fixed effects regression to estimate the association between the female net enrollment rate and marriage prevalence among adolescent women. The results indicate that higher participation in upper secondary education is associated with lower early marriage rates. Socioeconomic factors and the implementation of the Marriage Law Reform are also relevant contributors. These findings suggest the importance of expanding access to upper secondary education as part of broader efforts to reduce early marriage.

Altered Natural Killer Cell Function In Children With Severe Malaria, Grace Turyasingura, Kagan A. Mellencamp, Ruth Namazzi, Robert Opoka, Chandy C. John, Geoffrey T. Hart Jan 2026

Altered Natural Killer Cell Function In Children With Severe Malaria, Grace Turyasingura, Kagan A. Mellencamp, Ruth Namazzi, Robert Opoka, Chandy C. John, Geoffrey T. Hart

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Memory-like natural killer (NK) cells with enhanced antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) have correlated with protection from uncomplicated malaria in prior studies. However, the role of NK cells in severe malaria (SM) has not been characterized. In Ugandan sites with moderate and low malaria transmission, we evaluated NK cell (CD56bright, CD56dim, CD56neg) phenotype and ADCC function by flow cytometry in children < 5 years of age with SM (n = 21) and control community children (CC, n = 19). Children with SM had similar total NK cell counts to CC. Children with SM had a higher proportion of LILRB1+ NK cells than CC. The level of malaria transmission …

Ethical And Legal Aspects Of Ai Use For Self-Care For Counselor Educators And Counselors, Jessica Ellen Kuehne, Jody Vernam Jan 2026

Ethical And Legal Aspects Of Ai Use For Self-Care For Counselor Educators And Counselors, Jessica Ellen Kuehne, Jody Vernam

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This presentation explores the ethical and legal implications of using AI to support the self-care of counselors and counselor educators. While counselor self-care has been studied, the use of AI as a tool to promote this professional obligation remains largely unexamined. Counselor educators must consider how to navigate AI-generated self-care recommendations they may disagree with and how to maintain professional autonomy when AI offers guidance or predictions based on current behaviors. Identifying these challenges is essential for developing tools and innovations that reduce emerging ethical and legal risks in counseling and higher education. The session will examine these issues through …

Criminal Data Function Creep, Sarah E. Lageson Jan 2026

Criminal Data Function Creep, Sarah E. Lageson

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Automated, data-driven decision-making can create unfair outcomes and lead to discrimination. This Article considers a relatively ubiquitous part of modern life that is increasingly automated: the criminal background check. This Article, with contributions at the intersection of law and technology, antidiscrimination and consumer protection law, and sociological theory, makes the central claim that criminal record data is characterized by function creep—the unintended use of data for another purpose—which leads to a specific set of harms. This Article makes three central contributions. First, it offers an empirical assessment of contemporary, data-driven background screening using data based on in-depth interviews and systematic …

Coercion, Trauma, And Grief In The Interrogation Room: Documenting And Analyzing Cases Of False Confessions To Murder Of A Family Member, Steven A. Drizin, Richard A. Leo, Hayley M. D. Cleary, Samara Hoose Jan 2026

Coercion, Trauma, And Grief In The Interrogation Room: Documenting And Analyzing Cases Of False Confessions To Murder Of A Family Member, Steven A. Drizin, Richard A. Leo, Hayley M. D. Cleary, Samara Hoose

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

This article examines the phenomenon of false confessions in cases in which individuals were falsely accused of murdering close family members. Drawing on a dataset of twenty-two proven false confession cases, we document how grief, trauma, and coercive interrogation practices intersect to produce highly counterintuitive admissions and narratives of guilt. The study situates these cases within the broader literature on police interrogation and false confessions, highlighting situational risk factors such as lengthy custodial interrogation, sleep deprivation, false evidence ploys, and threats and promises, alongside dispositional vulnerabilities such as youth, mental illness, and trauma exposure. Unlike prior aggregated studies of proven …

Eagle Eyes: How The Chicago Police Department’S Video Surveillance Network Is Used To Fight Crime And Its Fourth Amendment Implications, Joseph Mcinerney

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Chicago, Illinois, is home to over 2.7 million individuals living under the supervision of a vast network of over forty thousand cameras integrated into a network of advanced technology run by the Chicago Office of Emergency Management. With little transparency, the City of Chicago has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the past two decades rapidly expanding the network throughout the city while incorporating new technologies each year, posing substantial privacy risks for the millions of residents unaware of the ever-present eyes on them. To determine whether the network violates the Fourth Amendment, particularly in the wake of Carpenter …

Police Reform As System Justification, Shawn E. Fields Jan 2026

Police Reform As System Justification, Shawn E. Fields

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

System Justification Theory (SJT) provides a useful lens through which to critique recent police reform efforts. SJT posits that members of society tend to justify and maintain existing social and political systems even when those systems disadvantage them, because the predictability of the status quo provides palliative, epistemic, and existential comfort in what otherwise appears to be an unjust and inequitable societal structure. Contrary to “false consciousness” theories, SJT claims that disadvantaged groups may intentionally rationalize what they know to be an unfair status quo, because doing so reduces social anxiety and threat while providing much desired order and meaning …
