Purpose: Mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe late complication affecting patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) treated with radiation therapy (RT) that significantly impacts patients' quality of life and can require costly interventions. Although radiation dose is a key factor, other clinical and demographic risk factors also influence ORN development. Previous predictive models have primarily been single-institutional, limiting their generalizability. In this first analysis from the PREDMORN Consortium, we have aimed to reproduce existing statistical association and modeling analyses on the largest and most diverse mandibular ORN cohort worldwide to allow comparison with previous studies.

Introduction: Each year, millions of people experience recurrent diverticulitis episodes. Elective sigmoid colon resection reduces the risk of recurrence, but The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons recommends individualising surgical decisions based on the impact of the condition on a patient's quality of life (QoL). However, no threshold for QoL impairment has been established to guide decision-making, and evidence comparing elective colectomy with medical management in terms of QoL limitation is limited. To address these gaps and to guide treatment decision-making, we designed the Comparison of Surgery and Medicine on the Impact of Diverticulitis (COSMID) trial. The COSMID trial is …

Combinatorial methods for preparing polymeric biomaterials enable the rapid identification of materials useful for many applications in science, medicine, and engineering. In the work described here, we demonstrate that side-chain reactive polymers can be used as templates for the rapid preparation of a small library of diversely functionalized protein–polymer conjugates. The activated ester polymer poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate) (PPFPA) was modified postpolymerization with substoichiometric equivalents of three hydrophilic primary amines to yield a library of amphiphilic, side-chain reactive copolymers. These copolymers were then conjugated to two receptor-targeting proteins, holotransferrin (hTF) and an engineered fibronectin-based protein (Fn3), through amine-activated ester coupling. We investigated …

Automated Database Selection Via Empirical Validation And Cost-Adjusted Scoring, Nazar Ahamed, Navakanth Talluri Jan 2026

Automated Database Selection Via Empirical Validation And Cost-Adjusted Scoring, Nazar Ahamed, Navakanth Talluri

Defensive Publications Series

Selecting a database service can be challenging when decisions rely on static information or generalized benchmarks, which may not align with an application's specific runtime performance needs, potentially leading to implementation risks. A system can provide automated, performance-validated database recommendations. The system can translate a user's non-functional requirements into a profile used to programmatically provision temporary test environments for candidate databases. A workload generator can then simulate a user's specific application load within these environments, which may allow the system to harvest real-time performance and cost metrics. The collected empirical data can be processed by a scoring algorithm to calculate …

Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)

The effectiveness of economic and social rights in rural areas remains a major challenge in Morocco. This study assesses everyday inequalities by examining the actual enjoyment of fundamental rights in two regions—Marrakech–Tensift–Al Haouz and Taza–Al Hoceima–Taounate—using a mixed‑methods design that combines quantitative and qualitative data. The findings indicate insufficient effectiveness across key indicators, including access to education, healthcare, and basic infrastructure, with particularly adverse outcomes for women and the poorest populations.

The Enduring Courage And Vision Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Emilio F. Iodice Jan 2026

The Enduring Courage And Vision Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Emilio F. Iodice

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) led during the most turbulent period in modern American history, facing not one but two existential crises: the Great Depression and World War II. His thirteen-year presidency was a lesson in courage, vision, and leadership, showing that true liberty relies as much on economic security and social justice at home as it does on military victory abroad. Today, as freedom faces both subtle and overt threats worldwide, Roosevelt’s example continues to serve as a vital blueprint for strong democratic governance.

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This paper introduces Integral Global Attunement (IGA) as a transformative paradigm in global leadership, emerging in response to the unprecedented shifts catalyzed by theCOVID-19 pandemic. Rooted in the fusion of psychological insight, intercultural consciousness, and ethical stewardship, IGA proposes a fifth wave of leadership—one that transcends transactional strategies to embrace identity, ethics, and relational interconnectedness as central pillars of influence. The writing argues that the current global crises reflect not merely external disruption but an inner dissonance within humanity, calling for a deeper, multi-aware model of leadership. Through the triadic lens of identity (e.g., multicultural integration, visionary consciousness), ethics (e.g., …

The Effect Of Servant Leadership And Psychological Safety On Employee Commitment And Workplace Engagement, Pierce J. Ippolito, Joshua S. Kay, Kevin J. Hurt Jan 2026

The Effect Of Servant Leadership And Psychological Safety On Employee Commitment And Workplace Engagement, Pierce J. Ippolito, Joshua S. Kay, Kevin J. Hurt

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This paper presents a conceptual model of servant leadership, psychological safety, work engagement, and individual commitment. Psychological safety is positioned as a causal factor that provides answers addressing why servant leaders have positive effects on individual commitment and work engagement. The depicted model operates under the consideration that commitment and engagement serve two distinct roles based on the study conducted by Hirschfeld and Feild (2000). Theory-based propositions are developed linking servant leadership and psychological safety to individual commitment and work engagement. Finally, the authors provide a framework that may be utilized for future research.

Pure Leadership Model: A Framework For Leaders Desiring To Lead With An Upright Heart, Matome Liphy Ramalepe

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Contemporary organisations face intensifying demands for value-driven decision-making, ethical consistency, and service-oriented leadership. These demands underscore the need for frameworks that integrate character formation with organisational performance. In response to these challenges, the Pure Leadership Model conceptualises leadership as a virtue-centred system in which specific virtues function as the mediating link between leadership styles and core organisational values. The model positions the virtues of meekness, compassion, courage, faithfulness, sincerity, and prudence as central mechanisms through which servant, ethical, and authentic leadership translate into the organisational values of service, accountability, and integrity. Through this virtuous mediation, the model ultimately promotes organisational …

The Core Triplet Theory On Leadership, Sajid Hameed Jan 2026

The Core Triplet Theory On Leadership, Sajid Hameed

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

There are many theories about what makes a leader effective, but no area of research has been studied more than leadership. Traditional models are comprehensive lists of traits; hence, we seldom find a person who possesses them all. One such model is the Core Triplet Theory on Leadership, which simplifies leadership into three core values: Integrity, Empathy, and Vision. These qualities express themselves at three levels: personal, human, and organizational. This theory is a simple, holistic, and pragmatic model to apply, and its adaptability to modern leadership challenges instills confidence. Integrity nurtures trust and ethical consistency at the individual level; …

Queens, Pearls And Spirochaetes, Radu Suciu

Artl@s Bulletin

Abstract: In December 2019, the New Zealand AIDS Foundation (now the Burnett Foundation) released a public health campaign raising awareness about the increasing rates of syphilis infections in New Zealand. The campaign consisted of photographs that contrasted contemporary backgrounds of bars and nightclubs with actors wearing theatrical costumes akin to the Elizabethan period. This reinforced the perceived idea that syphilis was a disease resurging from the distant past. This paper discusses one of the campaign’s most iconic portraits by analysing its shared cultural, artistic, and medical references (explicit or implicit) and their shifting meanings through time.

Beyond Broadcasting: Irish Radio And The Convergent Mediascape Of The 21st Century, Daithí Mcmahon

Irish Communication Review

As we reflect on one hundred years of broadcast radio in Ireland, we are reminded of the resilience required to remain a prominent fixture in what has become a highly congested digital mediascape. The Irish radio industry’s survival and continued success has been made possible, paradoxically, by remaining true to its origins as a linear, aural medium - while at the same time adapting to become a modern, digitally convergent one. Over the last twenty-five years, Irish radio has continued to serve as a live, spontaneous and trustworthy medium, providing an ever-present voice in Irish people’s lives at home and …

Who You Gonna Call? Talk Radio As Therapy And As A Marker Of Social Change In Ireland, Finola Doyle O'Neill Jan 2026

Who You Gonna Call? Talk Radio As Therapy And As A Marker Of Social Change In Ireland, Finola Doyle O'Neill

Irish Communication Review

In the Irish context, the radio talk show has long constituted a distinctive cultural institution, evolving from early programmes such as Dear Frankie, The Gay Byrne Show, The Ryan Line, and Liveline into a significant public forum for the expression of personal narratives, collective opinion, and emotional resonance (O’Sullivan, 2005). Over time, this genre has undergone a notable transformation—from functioning as a secular analogue to the Catholic confessional to becoming an increasingly therapeutic outlet for listeners. This evolution is emblematic of wider sociocultural shifts in Ireland, particularly the waning influence of institutional religion (Inglis, 2000) and the disintegration of traditional …

The Unscripting Of Broadcasting In Postwar Ireland, Eileen Morgan-Zayachek

Irish Communication Review

This article builds on existing histories of Irish broadcasting by examining the contexts and implementation of postwar reforms initiated by Fianna Fáil politician, Erskine Hamilton Childers. The lifting of script submission requirements and promotion of open debate extended Childers’ efforts to modernize Ireland’s infrastructure and promote civic engagement. Childers viewed Irish radio as a platform for cultivating critical thinking, public debate, and understanding of state institutions—assets he believed Irish citizens needed to compete in the global economy. The article reviews the repressive practices of the early broadcasting service that sought to avoid all controversial content. It also traces a throughline …

Optimized Resnet-18 Architecture For Multi-Class Oral Diseases Classification, Ahmed Ahmed

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

In recent years, the classification of oral diseases has gained significant attention due to its influence on public health and the necessity for early and accurate diagnosis. Traditional diagnosis depends on manual clinical assessment, which can be slow and subjective. An optimized and subsequently quantized model is required to provide a faster and more consistent diagnostic support tool. This paper proposes an optimized ResNet-18 architecture for the classification of six oral diseases. The optimization process is based on removing the Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU), Batch Normalization (BN), and convolutional layers from the base ResNet-18 blocks that contain 128 filters. This …
