Coal Geology & Exploration
Background The engineering-oriented, full flowsheet coal-based carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology is the key to efficient, clean coal utilization and carbon emission reduction. It represents a major technology that is urgently needed to ensure the energy security of China and achieve the strategic goals of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality of the country. Based on previous research efforts of the authors’ team, this study reviews the current status of this technology, reveals its integration mechanisms, and attempts to establish a pattern and scheme for CCUS cluster deployment in coal energy bases. Furthermore, it discusses the future …
The Federalism Canons As Ordinary Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark
The Federalism Canons As Ordinary Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark
Northwestern University Law Review
Scholars remain generally skeptical of substantive canons of statutory interpretation even as courts continue to employ such canons in important cases. Unlike semantic canons, which help judges discern the best meaning of statutory text in context, substantive canons provide tiebreakers when the text is unclear or require special clarity in order for the text to perform certain functions. Among the substantive canons, the so-called “federalism canons” have been singled out for special scrutiny. The federalism canons are a family of canons that require courts to avoid interpreting an act of Congress to divest states of certain sovereign rights or powers—including …

Policing Agency Data Trusts, Barry Friedman
Policing Agency Data Trusts, Barry Friedman
Northwestern University Law Review
Policing agencies are indiscriminately collecting, retaining, and using vast quantities of personal data from people who are suspected of no unlawful conduct whatsoever. This has caused expressions of concern or caution from many quarters, including—notably—the Director of National Intelligence (DNI). In a declassified report, the Office of the DNI stated that massive amounts of data are being collected “on nearly everyone that is of a type and level of sensitivity . . . that could be used to cause harm to an individual’s reputation, emotional well-being, or physical safety.”
This practice of universal data collection presents a conundrum. As many …
Electoral Due Process, Michael S. Kang
Electoral Due Process, Michael S. Kang
Northwestern University Law Review
Hyperpartisanship has hit century-long highs in American politics and is emboldening state government attempts to undermine election outcomes by using control over state lawmaking structure to strip away authority, and sometimes outright unseat, partisan opponents after they win elected office. Even as traditional norms against such moves have eroded, the Supreme Court has taken a pro-partisanship turn in removing judicial checks against such moves under equal protection and constitutional structure. This Article proposes shifting from challenges under those doctrines to a new approach under electoral due process for confronting this new generation of antidemocracy. Federal due process law restricts the …

Nutrition Assistance Programs And Pediatric Weight Outcomes: A Systematic Review, Dan Ferris, Genevieve Davison, Tyler Frank, Amanda Gilbert, Fanice Thomas, Sydney Rothman, Kim Lipsey, Sarah Moreland-Russell
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity and pediatric obesity have increased concurrently in the U.S., raising questions about the role of Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs (FNAPs) in shaping weight outcomes. This systematic review examined evidence on relationships between FNAP participation and pediatric weight outcomes.
METHODS: Six databases were searched for U.S.-based, peer-reviewed studies published through July 2024 that assessed FNAP participation and pediatric weight outcomes.
RESULTS: Seventy-five studies met the inclusion criteria, and no consistent pattern indicated that any single FNAP or program type (educational setting-based or direct financial support) reliably reduced or increased childhood overweight or obesity risk. Twenty studies found statistically …

- The rise in plastic consumption and production has also created a rise in plastic pollution. This plastic waste breaks down into smaller particles over time called microplastics (MPs).
- These plastics move through the environment (and through the food chain), often ending up in our bodies(see Fig. 1) (Cindrella& Rinjith, 2025).
- In 2013, Zettler et al. found that microbes often colonize MPs and form biofilms on the surface. This ecosystem is referred to as the plastisphere.
- The effects of MPs on the environment and human health is not well understood, and studying these effects is challenging.
- One of these challenges is …
Insomnia, The Witch, And The Dark Passenger As Shadow Projections In Joharah Al-Remal's Al-Awsaj, Dr. Afaf Al-Enezi
Insomnia, The Witch, And The Dark Passenger As Shadow Projections In Joharah Al-Remal's Al-Awsaj, Dr. Afaf Al-Enezi
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This study investigates how psychic repression and identity fragmentation are represented in Joharah Alremal’s Al-Awsaj (2023), asking how inherited trauma and the symbolic Dark Passenger shape the protagonist’s fractured selfhood. It aims to clarify the mechanisms through which insomnia, shadow projection, and the witch’s prophecies externalize unresolved familial wounds. Methodologically, the paper employs a psychoanalytic close reading informed by Jungian theory, situating the novel in comparative dialogue with Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004). The comparison examines both the universality of repressed destructive impulses and cultural trauma specific forms through which trauma manifests. The study finds that negotiations with the …

Human activities, either intentional or unintentional, have significantly influenced the global distribution and genetic composition of many species. The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens; BSF) is a species native to North America that has rapidly gained commercial importance due to its bioconversion efficiency, upcycling organic waste into higher-value products. Through human-mediated dispersal associated with trade and insect farming, BSF has been introduced widely across the Old World, including Africa, where both wild and captive populations are now established. Despite its expanding global distribution, the demographic history and genomic consequences of these introductions remain poorly understood, particularly in Africa. This work …

Belonging Through Research: How Engaging Undergraduate Efl Students In Authentic Research Experiences Affects Their Sense Of Belonging, Dr. Nawal Ibrahim Alhodithi
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
When undergraduate EFL students engage in authentic research, they begin to see themselves not merely as language learners but as legitimate researchers, a transformation that reshapes their academic belonging. This study investigates how authentic undergraduate research experiences influence English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ sense of belonging in a Saudi higher-education context. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected from 122 female undergraduate EFL students enrolled in a Research Methods course. Quantitative data were gathered using an adapted multidimensional belonging survey measuring membership, acceptance, affective comfort, trust, and participation/withdrawal, while qualitative reflections captured students’ identity development and research perceptions. …

Differences In Student Evaluations From Hybrid And Traditional Courses
Differences In Student Evaluations From Hybrid And Traditional Courses
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
Hybrid courses contain online elements in combination with reduced in-class seat time. This study examines differences in student evaluations from hybrid and traditional sections of an introductory course in economic and business statistics. In our hybrid course, face-to-face lectures are replaced with online lectures and class periods are conducted as question-answer and practice sessions. We find strong evidence that students mark down evaluation scores in the hybrid versus traditional format. Markdowns occur across all dimensions of the evaluation instrument.
The Implementation Of A Terminal Master’S Program In Applied Economics
The Implementation Of A Terminal Master’S Program In Applied Economics
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
This paper examines the impacts of transforming a traditional master’s program into a professionally-oriented, terminal degree program in applied economics. Alumni surveys were conducted before and after the curricular innovation and the results indicate that the change in program provided high quality training that alumni judged to be more relevant to the post-graduate work environment. This case study illustrates that master’s programs in economics can benefit by implementing curricular structures that explicitly serve terminal degree-seeking students while, at the same time, provide elements of training that students destined for the Ph.D. are unlikely to receive in a doctoral program.
