Wills Eye Hospital Papers

PURPOSE: Our study is motivated by evaluating the role of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) after chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy for ALL, a debated topic. Because patients may receive HCT at different times after CAR-T infusion or never, HCT post-CAR-T should be considered as a time-varying covariate (TVC).

METHODS: Standard Cox models and Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves (naïve method) assume that TVC status is known and fixed at baseline, which can yield biased estimates. Landmark analysis is a popular alternative but depends on a chosen landmark time. Time-dependent (TD) Cox model is better suited for TVC although visualizing survival curves …

The Bankruptcy Judge And The Generalist Tradition, Alexander Gouzoules Jan 2026

The Bankruptcy Judge And The Generalist Tradition, Alexander Gouzoules

BYU Law Review

The prevailing academic consensus is that bankruptcy judges are specialists presiding over specialized courts. This Article contends that this description is incomplete and, in some respects, inaccurate. Drawing on scholarly models of judicial specialization and historical surveys of the field, this Article contends that bankruptcy judges reflect a hybrid design choice: procedural specialization combined with substantive generalism. This model delivers many of the observed benefits of judicial specialization (including efficiency and technical competence) while preserving the cross-pollination of ideas and other benefits associated with the generalist tradition of American judging.

This Article also reflects on contemporary developments—most notably the rise …

Supercharging-Enhanced Ndia-Ms Enables Global Profiling Of Drug-Induced Proteome Solubility Shifts, Yun Xiong, Huimin Zhang, Lin Tan, Bo Wei, John N Weinstein, Philip L Lorenzi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Mass spectrometry (MS) is indispensable for high-throughput quantitation of protein expression. But protein function is regulated by factors beyond abundance alone. Here, we evaluate two supercharging reagents, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and m-nitrobenzyl alcohol (mNBA), in narrow-window data-independent acquisition (nDIA)-MS. DMSO markedly enhances MS signal and protein identification, whereas mNBA primarily increases peptide identifications. Optimizating nDIA-MS with 3% DMSO boosts signal intensity by up to 56%, enabling identification of ~9,600 proteins from 1 µg HeLa digest in 15 min. Using this methodology, we quantify solubility and abundance changes in 8,694 proteins across three cell lines following short-term treatment with the proteasome …

Background

Intracranial arteriosclerosis (large‐ and small‐vessel disease) is considered a risk factor for major neurological disorders, such as stroke, cognitive impairment, and dementia. While most studies investigating intracranial arteriosclerosis include individuals from industrialized populations, the prevalence and clinical meaning of intracranial vascular calcifications in populations with a subsistence lifestyle is unknown.

Methods

In this population‐based study evaluating data collected between 2017 and 2019 from Tsimane and Moseten people, 2 indigenous populations of forager‐horticulturalists living in the Bolivian Amazon, we used computed tomography to determine the prevalence of vascular calcifications in the intracranial internal carotid arteries, vertebral arteries, and lenticulostriate arteries …

Comparison Of Three Temperate Rainforest Climate Envelopes For Britain And Ireland: Where Could Our Rainforest Be?, Katerina Chernyuk, Thomas R. Murphy, James Buckley, Mary O'Shaughnessy, Markus P. Eichhorn

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Restoration of natural habitats is now recognised as a priority in both political and scientific circles. Temperate rainforests are internationally rare and endangered habitats, which are delineated from other woody biomes by high year-round rainfall and moderate temperatures, and are restricted to mid-latitude zones of the globe. With Britain and Ireland harbouring up to 40% of the potential range of European rainforest, this is a crucial region for their protection and restoration. Recent investment in tree planting and restoration initiatives in Ireland and Britain highlight the need for informed planning of native habitat and woodland creation to ensure long-term stability …

Quantitative Comparison Of The Performance Of Injection-Molded Polymeric Microneedle Dry Electrodes And Traditional Gel Electrodes For Ecg Signal Acquisition, Om Prakash Singh, Andrea Bocchino, Dennis Cherian, Yuan Hu, Michael J. Haslinger, Daniel Fechtig, Iris Prinz, Stefan Brandstatter, Paul Galvin, Conor O' Mahony

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Wearable dry electrodes facilitate continuous long-term electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, which is beneficial for the early diagnosis and management of heart disease. However, existing dry electrode technologies face limitations in maintaining clinically acceptable signal quality during movement, restricting their usability when patients are active. This is particularly critical for cardiac patients—such as those with arrhythmias or heart failure—who benefit from continuous monitoring during daily activities, exercise, or rehabilitation, where motion artefacts often obscure clinically relevant ECG features. To address this gap, we present microneedle (MN) dry electrodes, manufactured using a cost-effective industrial injection moulding process that is scalable for mass. We …

Functional Genomic Analysis Of Non-Canonical Dna Regulatory Elements Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor, Shayan Shahriar, Tajhal D Patel, Manjula Nakka, Sandra L Grimm, Cristian Coarfa, Daniel A Gorelick

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-dependent transcription factor activated by environmental toxicants like halogenated and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which then binds to DNA and regulates gene expression. AHR is implicated in numerous physiological processes, including liver and immune function, cell cycle control, oncogenesis, and metabolism. Traditionally, AHR binds a consensus DNA sequence (GCGTG), the xenobiotic response element (XRE), recruits coregulators, and modulates gene expression. Yet, recent evidence suggests AHR can also regulate gene expression via a non-consensus sequence (GGGA), termed the non-consensus XRE (NC-XRE). The prevalence and functional significance of NC-XRE motifs in the genome have remained unclear. …

Beyond Bile Acids Synthesis: Metabolomics Profiling Highlights Extensive Metabolic Dysregulation And Treatment Response In Ctx, Monte A Del Monte, Jennifer Hanson, Penelope E Bonnen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is an inherited metabolic disorder caused by variants in CYP27A1 leading to loss of sterol-27-hydroxylase activity. Sterol-27-hydroxylase generates two classes of bioactive signaling molecules: bile acids and oxysterols. The broader metabolic consequences resulting from perturbations in bile acid and oxysterol signaling and their reversibility with FDA-approved treatment chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), are not fully described.

Methods: To establish a comprehensive map of metabolic consequences of CTX, we performed large-scale, untargeted plasma metabolomics in a single subject with CTX, both before and after 6 months of CDCA therapy, and compared results with a reference cohort of over 1100 …
