School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Introduction:  Wilms tumor (WT) is a highly treatable form of childhood cancer, with five-year survival rates greater than 90% in high-income countries. In low- and middle-income countries, survival is still low. Delayed surgery is one of the leading factors for poor survival, as it leads to tumor complications, making subsequent treatment more complex. However, there is a paucity of information in Uganda on the prevalence and factors associated with delayed surgery. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with delayed surgery, and to explore the barriers and facilitators of timely surgery among children with WT at …

Keeping It Zen: In-Hospital Decompression Space For Employee Resiliency, Karen Richendollar, Caren E. Herring

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Research has shown that 33% (Ibrahim, 2022) of nurse's experience depression and posttraumatic stress within their job and that rate continues to grow each year. A member of the team survey sent out to all staff at an acute care hospital in Virginia Beach, Virginia, showed that staff members could not decompress emotionally and physically after their shifts. Staff members expressly indicated they could not leave work at work and continued thinking about work when they were at home. Literature has shown that implementing a decompression space to allow staff members to decompress away from clinical areas promotes staff resiliency, …

Applying The Lean Process To Achieve The Quadruple Aim In Community Care Imaging Consults, Cynthia L. Austin Feb 2026

Applying The Lean Process To Achieve The Quadruple Aim In Community Care Imaging Consults, Cynthia L. Austin

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Introduction: Care coordination has been challenging in scheduling high-risk patients needing diagnostic imaging procedures. Missing crucial patient information can lower the value of patient-reported outcomes because it influences decision-making in care plans, results in duplication of services, and delays the delivery of care or treatments (Ayilara et al., 2019). Incomplete data delays diagnostic procedures, diagnosis, and medical treatments (Fernholm et al., 2019). Numerous studies have revealed that prolonged waiting times are frequently the leading cause of patients' discontent with outpatient scheduling, and equitable waiting periods are necessary based on clinical competency (Ala & Chen,2022). Medical imaging methods frequently cause increased …

The Impact Of A Coaching Program On Student Retention In An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Angela J. Dryden Feb 2026

The Impact Of A Coaching Program On Student Retention In An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Angela J. Dryden

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Student success in college is judged by retention and graduation rates (Millea et al., 2018). Nursing student retention and attrition are identified as ongoing areas of international concern. Academic failure is known to impact students, their families, the institutions, and the greater communities in relation to the overall nursing shortage (Brown et al., 2020). Nursing students that do not progress affect the present nursing shortage since the failure leaves an opening that is then not filled (Cross & Rogers, 2022). For those institutions that may have a direct relationship with a health system, students who do not progress have an …

RNA modifications represent a dynamic layer of gene expression regulation, RNA stability, and translation with profound implications for cellular function and disease. However, the critical regulation and functions of RNA-modifying proteins (RMPs) remain poorly understood. Here, we present a large-scale characterization of RMPs through 378 multiomics datasets encompassing genomics, bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, epitranscriptomics, proteomics, and posttranslational modifications (PTMs) across 63 human tissues. Our analysis of experimental perturbations of RMPs revealed dynamic differential modification peaks and expressed genes. We applied nonnegative matrix factorization to annotate RMP-mediated cell types in single-cell transcriptomes. Functional annotations in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) revealed RMPs …

Primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1) is a rare genetic disorder caused by hepatic oxalate overproduction due to alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase (AGXT) deficiency. Therapeutic strategies targeting glycolate oxidase (GO) and lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA), key enzymes in glyoxylate metabolism, have shown promise in reducing oxalate burden. However, recently approved siRNA therapies remain limited by high cost, unfavorable pharmacokinetics, and limited global accessibility. We report the development of compound 2, a dual GO/LDHA inhibitor (K i = 390 and 40 nM, respectively) that also promotes hydrophobic tag-mediated autophagic degradation of LDHA. Its efficacy was evaluated in Agxt –/– mice, both in primary …

Serial False Lumen Patency Evaluation Of A Type B Dissection Represented With Malperfusion Following Medical Management, S Taha Zaidi, Quang Le, Firas Mussa, Akiko Tanaka, S Keisin Wang, Arash Keyhani, Kourosh Keyhani

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

False lumen evolution in type B aortic dissection, particularly with medical management and anticoagulation, remains incompletely understood. We report a 55-year-old man on apixaban for pulmonary embolism with a subacute zone 3-10L TBAD without malperfusion. He was managed medically initially and represented twice over 2 months with back pain and acute right lower extremity ischemia. Serial imaging demonstrated dynamic remodeling with progression from partial to near-complete thrombosis to full reperfusion with true lumen compression. Urgent endovascular repair was performed successfully. This case illustrates the unpredictable course of medically managed TBAD and need for judicious use of anticoagulation.

Cancer-induced cachexia and anorexia are debilitating complications across many cancers, yet effective treatments remain limited due to a poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Here, we identify an uncharacterized tumor-immune-neural circuit driving these syndromes, centered on growth and differentiation factor 15 (GDF15). Using genetically engineered mouse models, we find that loss of GDF15 protects against appetite loss, muscle wasting, and fat loss in pancreatic, lung, and skin cancers. Single-cell RNA sequencing reveals macrophages as a major source of GDF15, induced by tumor-derived colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF1). GDF15 acts via the central nervous system to enhance β-adrenergic signaling in the tumor …

Use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RA) for weight loss is increasing; implications in breast cancer (BC) survivors remain unclear. This retrospective cohort study evaluated treatment patterns, weight loss, and outcomes in BC survivors at an academic institution receiving GLP1-RA. We evaluated patients with non-metastatic (ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), stage 1-3) BC who received GLP1-RA (2005 - 2024). Linear regression models estimated associations between weight change and clinical factors. After excluding DCIS, propensity score matching (1:2) was used to match patients who received GLP1-RA with patients who did not, based on confounding covariates. Kaplan-Meier estimates and log-rank tests compared disease-free …

Mandibular Extension As A Trigger Of The Proprioceptive Trigeminocardiac Reflex, Massimo Conti, Giovanna Traina, Daniele Tonlorenzi

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a physiological response characterized by a reduction in heart rate and arterial blood pressure following stimulation of any branch of the fifth cranial nerve. This review presents a novel mechanism of TCR induction through proprioceptive activation of the trigeminal nerve via mandibular extension (ME). Accordingly, it is referred to as the “proprioceptive trigeminocardiac reflex” (pTCR). An overview of the existing literature on ME-evoked TCR in humans and animals is presented, with particular emphasis on evidence of cerebral microcirculatory alterations. The magnitude of cardiovascular responses appears to depend on the duration of ME, with repeated applications …
