Does Having A Pet Really Benefit Your Mental Health?, Harold Herzog
Herzog - Companion Animals and Health
A study in the United Kingdom of the effect of pet's on owner's mental health during the COVID pandemic produced surprising results. The owners of pets did not have improved mental health and those owners who were more attached to their pets were more depressed and lonelier than less attached owners.

Successfully achieving a low-carbon transition in the transport sector requires an understanding of the lending logics of the financial institutions in order to identify the financing directionality and gaps. However, in the transportation literature, there is a lack of attention on the relationship between financing sources and the direction of innovation. The present study seeks to address this by mapping the flow of finance from financial institutions to transport projects. Our dataset consists of 9 transport projects included in the Philippines’ Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). We consider different types of projects (rail development, bus rapid transit implementation, jeepney modernization) and …

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
In the twenty-first century, Western cultures are highly materialistic and defined by consumeristic goals to garner as much “stuff” as possible (Berger, 2015). This constant pursuit has demonstrable adverse effects on personal and social well being (Bahl et al., 2016; Wang, et al., 2017), while overconsumption also has devastating impacts on the global environment. Previous studies found a negative relationship between levels of mindfulness and levels of materialism (Nagpaul & Pang, 2015; Watson, 2019), indicating the potential for mindfulness to combat otherwise materialistic behaviors. Furthermore, previous research demonstrated gratitude interventions led to lower scores on materialism (Chaplin, et al., 2018), …

Host-associated microbiomes play an essential role in the health of organisms, including immune system activation, metabolism, and energy uptake. It is well established that microbial communities differ depending on the life stage and natural history of the organism. However, the effects of life stage and natural history on microbial communities may also be influenced by human activities. We investigated the effects of amphibian life stage (terrestrial eft vs. aquatic adult) and proximity to roadways on newt skin bacterial communities. We found that the eft and adult life stages differed in bacterial community composition; however, the effects of roads on community …

BACKGROUND: Measuring quality of care indicators is important for clinicians and decision making in health care to improve patient outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to identify quality of care indicators for patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) and to validate these in an international cohort treated with radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). The secondary objective was to assess the factors associated with failure to validate the pentafecta.
DESIGN: We performed a retrospective multicenter study of patients treated with RNU for EAU high-risk (HR) UTUC.
OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Five quality indicators were consensually approved, including a negative surgical margin, …

The Internet of Things (IoT) sustainable solutions are the next generation of methods for managing and monitoring valuable natural resources such as water. Research has focused on smart IoT-based water management and monitoring system designs for various types of applications, including agricultural, industrial, residential, and crude oil exploration sectors. To this end, unlike other surveys available in the literature, this work presents an all-encompassing analysis of 43 papers published between 2014 and 2022 for systems proposed to manage and monitor water in four different sectors: agricultural, industrial, residential, and oilfield sectors. In this work, we also propose a new optical …

Introduction. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major complication in critically ill patients that affects mortality. Sepsis is a major predisposing factor for AKI and provides a poor prognosis and high mortality rate. Thisstudy aimed toidentifythe difference of hospital mortality, length of stay, renal recovery, and needs for hemodialysis between AKI patients due to sepsis and non-sepsis, as well as to determine the factors that influence the mortality of patients with AKI.Methods. An analytical observational study was conducted among patients with AKI according to the KDIGO criteria and aged ≥40 years old. Data were obtained from patients’ medical records in …

Pleural effusion is still the main cause of respiratory distress and can also be caused by many diseases either from pleural, lungs, or even extrapulmonary problems. The morbidity and mortality of this condition are directly associated with the underlying causes. The aim of this study is to investigate the profile of the patients, etiology, location, fluid characteristics, comorbidities, and also the bacteria pattern of non-malignant pleural effusion. Methods. This is a retrospective descriptive study thatused patient’s medical records from January to December …

Despite of the high prevalence of liver enzyme elevation in COVID-19 patients, its effect on predicting COVID-19 patients’ prognosis was still debatable. This evidence-based case report aims to evaluate the effect of abnormal liver function in the prognosis of COVID-19 patients. Literature searching was performed on August 16-17 2021 using 3 databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Proquest. The articles selected by title/abstract screening, duplication elimination, and applying eligibility criteria were then appraised using Centre of Evidence Based Medicine (CEBM), University of Oxford. Some of the studies reported there were no significant difference in the prognosis of COVID-19 patient with and without …

Since March 2020, the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has engulfed the world, including Indonesia, for nearly two years. SARS-CoV-2 has undergone several mutations during its evolution as a pathogen, resulting in various variants of global concern. Variants of this virus are suspected to impede the outbreak resolution and possibly causing the outbreak to spiral out of control. There is still considerable debate and research underway regarding the new SARS-CoV-2 variants. Rapid transmission mechanisms and widespread vaccination coverage have accelerated the virus’s mutation rate and resulted in numerous new variants. To date, this has resulted in the discovery of a …

Introduction. Physiologic changes in respiratory tract in elderly increase incidence of post-operative pneumonia. Post-operative pneumonia in non-thoracic surgery was found higher in abdominal surgery. This study aimed to develop a prediction model of 30-day post-operative pneumonia in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
Methods. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using elderly patient’s medical records who underwent abdominal surgery in Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital. Multivariate analysis using logistic regression was used to determine Odds Ratio (OR). Model’s calibration performance was determined by Hosmer-Lameshow test and its discrimination performance was determined by calculating area under the curve (AUC).

This Note argues that the United States courts have jurisdiction to consider corporate liability for international law violations of human rights under the reasoning of the Supreme Court of Canada, in Nevsun Resources Ltd. v. Araya. The United States Supreme Court has escaped holding such liability exists, but Canada has outlined how countries, such as the United States, no longer can avoid holding corporations liable under customary international law. Corporate liability for human rights violations committed abroad is a cutting-edge issue. The United States Supreme Court has considered the issue before, but the Court used different analyses and was …
