Compassion Fatigue: The Effects Of Secondary Traumatic Stress And Vicarious Traumatization Among Baltimore Police Department Community Chaplains, Angela Teresa Jones-Ramirez
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Baltimore is plagued with a history of high crime, violence, and murder resulting in trauma. The purpose of the Doctor of Ministry action research project was to educate Baltimore Police Department (BPD) Community Chaplains concerning compassion fatigue while maintaining effective quality care. A two-day workshop was developed as an intervention to address the problem. Pretest and posttest surveys were administered using the Professional Quality of Life Scale, Version 5, and the Skovholt Professional Practitioner Resiliency and Self-Care Inventory. Data in the form of surveys, group notes, field notes, recorded testimonials, and stories were collected and analyzed. Results of the data …

Sabbath-Keeping And Mental Health: The Influence Of Weekly Sabbath-Keeping On Stress, Anxiety And Well-Being, Kathryn Mcnichol
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of the current study is to explore the effectiveness of a psychoeducational Sabbath intervention. Using a multiple baseline design, subsets of participants were assigned the psychoeducational intervention at varying times and completed a series of mental health questionnaires before, during, and after the intervention to assess its benefits. After receiving the psychoeducational intervention, participants began a weekly Sabbath-keeping practice. This study added to the limited existing literature on Sabbath-keeping and health, specifically mental health, by assessing the impact on anxiety, stress, and well-being. Results of this study indicated a potential connection between the practice of Sabbath-keeping and positive …

Reflections On Lessons Learned During Covid-19: Re-Envisioning Middle School Band Programs After Covid-19, Mckinley Stinson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite increased accessibility regarding instructional technology for music education classrooms, an achievement disparity continued to broaden amid COVID-19. When school districts began to close their buildings, curriculum and instruction transitioned to online platforms. Varied student and teacher participation indicated multiple challenges. Experimental virtual learning concluded the 2019–2020 school year and continued in variations through summer 2021. This qualitative historical study examined perspectives concerning teaching during COVID-19 as held by music teachers, secondary band directors, school administrators, and university music educators. Individuals reflected on four periods between 2019–2021. The initial phase detailed instructional and experiential goals for the 2019–2020 school year. …
Evangelical Mental Health During A Pandemic: A Three-Way Interaction Analysis, Michael Sean Williams
Evangelical Mental Health During A Pandemic: A Three-Way Interaction Analysis, Michael Sean Williams
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
COVID-19 quickly became a global pandemic and a biological disaster. Mental health deteriorated due to fear, stress, isolation, and loneliness. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and disturbed sleep have been associated with COVID-19. There is limited research on mental health and well-being among evangelical Christians. A primary concern is that church congregants and leaders are tired and struggle with mental health issues. Thus, care for the congregation and community is limited. The rate of distress and depression among the religious is on the rise. The purpose of this quantitative research is to evaluate the interaction of perceived stress and emotional …
Pastoral Leadership: The Importance Of Succession Planning Development And Transition In Our Local Churches, Michelle Renee Jenkins
Pastoral Leadership: The Importance Of Succession Planning Development And Transition In Our Local Churches, Michelle Renee Jenkins
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A pastoral succession plan will address the issues of who will be responsible for leading the respective congregation if something happens to the current Pastor. Without clear direction, leaders leave their flocks in precarious positions. The problem is that churches may not have a concise succession plan to identify a qualified leader to take up the leadership mantle. The study will lay the foundation from a biblical perspective on the importance of identifying a leader’s successor and the advantages of providing a smooth transition for the assembly. The research will stress the importance of pastors not only identifying their successors …

Alaskan Rural Pastors' Lived Experiences With Mental Health Stigma, Josephine Kay Barry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of rural Alaskan pastors with mental health and mental health stigma both personally and professionally. While there were few studies available to assist with the framework of this research there were some that focused on pastors, depression, burnout and collaboration with counselors in rural areas. A Conceptual Mapping Task (CMT) was used to conduct the interview of five pastors within an isolated Alaskan community. Pastors were asked to describe in detail their lived encounters with mental health stigma and how it impacted them and their congregation. Interviews were …

Church Revitalization: Strategies For Revitalization And The Importance Of Emotional Intelligence For Pastors And Church Revitalizers In The Frontier Baptist Association, Timothy F. Ireland
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The majority of Southern Baptist Churches in North America are plateaued or in decline. Without a new effective strategy for church revitalization, the largest evangelical denomination will close thousands of local churches. Knowing what to do and how to do it is critical for revitalization. The study presents a synthesis of research that reveals common factors present in plateaued and dying churches, strategies advanced for successful church revitalization, and church revitalizers’ qualifications. This project thesis included research concerning the utilization of emotional intelligence (EQ), EQ testing, and training. Pastors with high EQ are well suited for leading a church through …
Digital Privacy: A Quantitative Study Exploring The Influence Of Privacy Fatigue On Privacy Management Behavior In Generation Z College Students, Sara Allison Brake
Digital Privacy: A Quantitative Study Exploring The Influence Of Privacy Fatigue On Privacy Management Behavior In Generation Z College Students, Sara Allison Brake
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Generation Z has grown up in a digital environment where their physical world is often merged with their digital world. Research has found that students often blindly accept social media terms and agreements because they feel they have no choice. Therefore, many students are often lacking in knowledge regarding privacy protection behavior on social media platforms. Some scholars argue that this creates a privacy paradox, while others argue it elicits privacy fatigue. In addition, there is little centralized regulation for online privacy, and privacy agreements vary by social media platform. The purpose of this study was to explore the variables …

Deepen Electronic Health Record Diffusion Beyond Breadth: Game Changers And Decision Drivers, Xuan Wang, Jun Sun, Ying Wang, Yi Liu
Information Systems Faculty Publications
Cloud computing, financial incentive and patient-centered care are the game changers that deepen EHR diffusion beyond breadth. Based on the innovation diffusion theory (IDT), technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework and alignment literature, this study examines how these changes shape business requirement, service value and society need that drive different phases of EHR diffusion in terms of planning, adoption, usage and upgrade. A longitudinal analysis with the USA National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) reveals the impacts of different drivers on EHR diffusion. In addition to quantitative results, interview observations corroborate the relationships among game changers, decision drivers and EHR diffusion. The findings …

While the COVID-19 crisis has forced societies and governments to confront new challenges and answer new questions, it has also renewed and reignited longstanding debates about the extent of individuals’ obligations to each other. In particular, the American body politic is once again embroiled in conflict over the reach of an individual’s personal choices and the extent to which consideration of the potentially harmful effects of our choices on others should shape individual behaviors. Today, this fight centers on public health measures intended to reduce the spread and severity of COVID-19, such as masking, distancing, and vaccination. Debates rage over …
The Generational Squeeze: A Commentary On Multi- Generational Special Needs And Benefit Planning In Georgia, Christopher Wages
The Generational Squeeze: A Commentary On Multi- Generational Special Needs And Benefit Planning In Georgia, Christopher Wages
Mercer Law Review
As the generation of baby boomers—individuals born between 1946 and 1964—grow older, their children are being progressively squeezed between caring for aging parents and the demands of a family of their own, giving rise to the term “sandwich generation.” The current population of fifty-three million baby boomers over the age of sixty-five accounts for 16% of the populace. As such, younger generations are finding themselves sandwiched between the financial, emotional, and physical needs of their aging parents and young children. This challenging situation is further exacerbated for families dealing with disabilities, and this scenario is only becoming more ubiquitous. In …

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Facemask use is associated with reduced transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Most surveys assessing perceptions and practices of mask use miss the most vulnerable racial, ethnic, and socio-economic populations. These same populations have suffered disproportionate impacts from the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to assess beliefs, access, and practices of mask wearing across 15 urban emergency department (ED) populations.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study of ED patients from December 2020 to March 2021 at 15 geographically diverse, safety net EDs across the US. The primary outcome was frequency of mask use outside the …

Comparative Kinematic Gait Analysis In Adults With Multiple Disabilities, Lauren Rumbalski
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
The purpose of this research is to identify abnormal gait parameters or patterns amongst young adults with multiple disabilities enrolled in a work transition program sponsored by a public-school system. Gait disorders are commonly seen in individuals with neurologic disorders, with significant research in children with autism. Gait disorders have been linked with fall and injury risk, with significant research in elderly populations. Gait analysis technology can be used to identify gait characteristics in populations that are abnormal or contribute to gait disorders. In an observational design, students from the transitional program promoted by Westerville City Schools, housed on Otterbein …

In this report, we are aiming to find the best construction alternative to provide housing to the homeless community of Multnomah County in Oregon. The goal is to identify the most beneficial construction process through an economic analysis. In conjunction with existing projects such as “Safe Rest Villages” that are working on offering services and solutions, the plan is to reduce the county’s houseless population by 50% over a time period of 10 years. The analysis includes gathering data about the community, but also calculating the costs and benefits of three alternatives - 3D Printed houses, tiny homes, and prefabricated …

Independent Investigations Of The Relationships Between Altruistic Behavior And Empathy With Depression, Colton Watson
Independent Investigations Of The Relationships Between Altruistic Behavior And Empathy With Depression, Colton Watson
Honors Theses
Depressive symptoms can influence a variety of individual factors, including altruism and empathy. The nature of that relationship, however, is poorly understood. Cross-sectional studies examining the empathetic and altruistic abilities of people with varying levels of depressive symptoms have produced mixed results, as both the magnitude and direction of any correlations between empathy or altruism and depression are varied. Thus, we aimed to examine the impact of depressive symptoms on self-report measures of altruistic behavior and empathy. Using the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptoms-Self Report (QIDS-SR) to measure depressive symptoms, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) to measure empathy, and the …
Effect Of Declaw Bans On Shelter Cat Populations, Lauren Bowles
Effect Of Declaw Bans On Shelter Cat Populations, Lauren Bowles
Honors Theses
Growing concern over animal welfare has led to new policies that ban declaw procedures on cats. In the United States, several cities have instituted bans, including Denver, Colorado. This study examines whether the ban has resulted in changed euthanasia rates and adoption rates in an animal shelter system. Data on euthanasia rates and adoption rates were gathered for thirteen years prior to the ban and for five years following implementation. The euthanasia rate was found to have decreased while the adoption rate increased. Several possible explanations are explored and a recommendation for public policy is given.
