Urinary Incontinence: Understanding The Silent Plight Of Women, Yasmin Nadeem Parpio, Anmol Minaz, Sonia Ijaz Haider

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Urinary incontinence (UI) is defined as the complaint of involuntary loss of urine. UI affects both men and women but is more common in women. It has been identified as a World Health Organization priority. The burden related to UI at local, national, and global levels is huge and its impact in terms of physical, social, mental, and financial aspects makes it a concerning issue. However, there exist several barriers in terms of knowledge and attitude in seeking healthcare among women experiencing UI. This calls upon a multi-disciplinary approach involving professionals from different disciplines and tackling it with collaborative and …

Prediction Performance Of Linear Models And Gradient Boosting Machine On Complex Phenotypes In Outbred Mice., Bruno C Perez, Marco C A M Bink, Karen L. Svenson, Gary Churchill, Mario P L Calus

Faculty Research 2022

We compared the performance of linear (GBLUP, BayesB, and elastic net) methods to a nonparametric tree-based ensemble (gradient boosting machine) method for genomic prediction of complex traits in mice. The dataset used contained genotypes for 50,112 SNP markers and phenotypes for 835 animals from 6 generations. Traits analyzed were bone mineral density, body weight at 10, 15, and 20 weeks, fat percentage, circulating cholesterol, glucose, insulin, triglycerides, and urine creatinine. The youngest generation was used as a validation subset, and predictions were based on all older generations. Model performance was evaluated by comparing predictions for animals in the validation subset …

Reproduction And Gender Self-Determination: Fertile Grounds For Trans Legal Advocacy, Samira Seraji Apr 2022

Reproduction And Gender Self-Determination: Fertile Grounds For Trans Legal Advocacy, Samira Seraji

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Current medical constructions of trans identities reflect heterosexist understandings of gender expression—understandings that deny access to gender-affirming healthcare to those who fail to perform normative binary genders. As medical providers establish norms for how to “properly” be trans, the state codifies these norms, basing trans existence on rigidly defined and harshly enforced understandings of binary gender. When this construction of transness is codified on an institutional level, such as with gender reclassification rules for government identification, it forces trans people to conform their bodies to cisgender norms, and dangerously disrupts trans people’s bodily autonomy and diminishes their control over their …

A Quality Improvement Initiative To Redefine Nurse-Led Discharge Interventions In A Skilled Nursing Facility (Snf) On All-Cause 30-Day Re-Admission Rates Using The Re-Engineered Discharge (Red) Program, Ruby Panju-Merali Msn, Fnp-C

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: The growing population of people over the age of 65 years with surmounting medical complexities resulting in hospital re-admissions poses significant challenges for the healthcare system. Re-Engineered Discharge (RED) has demonstrated interventions inclusive of nursing driven discharge planning to successfully decrease hospital readmissions in Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF).

Purpose: This aim of this quality improvement initiative was to improve discharge efficiency by implementing a modified version of RED to evaluate the effect of centralizing nursing in education and discharge processes and influence on all-cause 30-day readmission rates.

Methods: A pre and post intervention design was utilized for patient chart …

Implementation Of A Zone Of Silence During Administration Of Breastmilk To Decrease Nurses’ Distractions In A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Quality Improvement Project, Lauren Crociata Apr 2022

Implementation Of A Zone Of Silence During Administration Of Breastmilk To Decrease Nurses’ Distractions In A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Quality Improvement Project, Lauren Crociata

DNP Projects

Introduction: In the NICU, breastmilk is handled and administered as safely and carefully as a medication. Administration errors occur when incorrect breastmilk is administered to the wrong patient. This can lead to the transmission of infectious disease and create the loss of trust between families and the healthcare team during a neonate’s NICU stay. Nurses are often faced with interruptions and distractions during administration, and evidence shows that interventions to reduce nurses’ distractions lead to reduction of administration errors in inpatient settings. This quality improvement project took place in a level III NICU. It implemented an evidence-based zone of silence …

Informational Regulation, The Environment, And The Public, Katrina Fischer Kuh Apr 2022

Informational Regulation, The Environment, And The Public, Katrina Fischer Kuh

Marquette Law Review

Informational Regulation, the Environment, and the Public generates a typology to analyze how public disclosure functions in informational regulation. In the environmental context, informational regulation compels the public disclosure of environmental information without mandating substantive environmental outcomes in the expectation that disclosure itself will prompt beneficial change in the environmental context. Application of the Article’s typology reveals that the emperor has no clothes: Communication of environmental information to the public is considered central to policies employing informational regulation, but the information produced pursuant to these measures largely fails to reach or be understood by lay individuals. For example, empirical data …

Nowhere To Run. Impact Of Family Violence Incidents During Covid-19 Lockdown In Texas, Edidiong Mendie, Abiodun Raufu, Emmanuel Ben Edet, Oludayo Famakin-Johnson

Journal of Family Strengths

The prevalence of family violence incidents experienced an exponential rise during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The pandemic ushered in a new threat to life which was complicated by the restriction on mobility. Given the stay-at-home order enacted by different States, victims of family violence were compelled to face their abusers with no escape route, particularly intimate partners. This work is an exploratory study that analyzed the trends of family violence cases in selected Texas counties pre covid-19 and during covid-19. The data revealed an increase in family violence incidents from 12 out of the 15 counties studied. This work offers …

Self-Reported Sexual Behavior In A Pediatric Gender Clinic Sample, Mirae J. Fornander, Anna Egan, Christine Moser

Posters

Introduction Previous studies of transgender/gender diverse (TGD) youth indicate differences in rates of sexual behaviors between TGD youth and their cisgender peers. However, few studies have reported the sexual behavior and preferences of TGD youth in a large clinic sample, and no studies, to our knowledge, have utilized questionnaires that do not assume the sex or gender of one’s sexual partner. The current study aims to explore the self-reported sexual behavior of TGD youth presenting for gender-affirming medical care. Methods Retrospective chart review of 589 patients (ages 12-22, M= 15.92, SD= 1.54; 72.9% assigned female sex at birth (SAB)) presenting …

A Formative Memory, Ashlynd Norvask

The Diana McDonald Writer's Challenge

This personal essay offers a vivid recounting of childhood classroom humiliation, not only by snickering classmates, but by a teacher who lacks patience, understanding of learning disabilities, and a sense of heart for a struggling student. The author, Ashlynd Norvask, also expresses her appreciation for her grandfather, the person who patiently worked with her to set her on a path toward developing -- as evidenced by this clearly written piece -- strong literacy skills.

Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/‘proxy’ AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly …

Outpatient Emergency Preparedness, Mary Haywood Apr 2022

Outpatient Emergency Preparedness, Mary Haywood

Presentations

It is commonly believed that medical emergencies do not present to general pediatric offices. However, it has been estimated that 0.9-42 emergencies per office site/year occur. The most common presentations are respiratory in nature. However, children can also present with dehydration, seizure, psychiatric or behavioral complaints. Despite this, most offices are not prepared to handle these presentations for various reasons. Multiple studies have showed that preparedness in inpatient settings is improved with education, implementation, or protocols and deliberate practice with mock codes. However, there have been few studies in the outpatient setting. One study utilized simulation as a tool to …

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 2022) – “When students decide they want to go into health care, they typically think of two things – a physician or a nurse. However, if you look at what comprises the health care team, it’s allied health professionals making up two-thirds of the team, and that’s a wide description of everybody else besides nurses or physicians,” says Dr. Don Samples, dean of the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences at East Tennessee State University.

“It’s the physical therapists, the occupational therapists, the speech-language pathologists, the respiratory therapists, the radiographers, the nutritionists and social workers,” …
