Senior Theses

Wastewater surveillance has been used for a variety of purposes but, in recent years, has most notably been utilized during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many universities in the United States used it as a means of monitoring levels of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on their campuses. The University of South Carolina, University of Arizona, and University of North Carolina- Charlotte were three such schools. An analysis of data published by these three schools has been used to synthesize a proposed list of best methods to be used by other universities during the reemergence of SARS-CoV-2 or during the outbreak of a new …

The Role Of Mediator Kinases Cdk8/19 In The Acquired Resistance To Cdk4/6 Targeting Drugs In Breast Cancer, Kaitlyn Digsby Apr 2022

The Role Of Mediator Kinases Cdk8/19 In The Acquired Resistance To Cdk4/6 Targeting Drugs In Breast Cancer, Kaitlyn Digsby

Senior Theses

Breast cancer remains the highest cause of worldwide cancer-related mortality. Unfortunately, acquired therapeutic resistance occurs in the majority of cases of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. An effort to discover drugs which act synergistically with Palbociclib and prevent the development of resistance and tumor growth is essential to improving patient outcomes. Cyclin dependent kinases (CDK) 8 and 19 are Mediator complex proteins. The Mediator complex is an enzymatic module regulating transcription. The goal of the research is to elucidate the mechanism by which CDK8/19 inhibitor, SNX631, prevents acquired resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitor, Palbociclib. The present study aims to elucidate the role …

Promoting Psychological Resilience In Healthcare Workers In Times Of Crisis: Lessons Learned From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Callie Shirley

Senior Theses

HIV-related services have been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in South Carolina (SC). However, many HIV care facilities demonstrated their organizational resilience in adapting to new challenges. One facilitator of organizational resilience, psychological resilience, has become increasingly studied in the health area during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the heightened burdens placed on healthcare workers. Psychological resilience in regard to healthcare facilities is defined as the ability of the health workforce to adapt to adversity and is beneficial to mental health outcomes of the employees. Current literature on psychological resilience has identified facilitators such as support from leadership, a positive …

The Impact Of Transfer Spending In Expediting Improvement Of On-Field Performance Of English Premier League Clubs, Brendan Merten

Senior Theses

This thesis analyzes transfer spending and performance data from English Premier League football clubs participating in the 1992-2021 seasons of the English Premier League using regression analysis and Granger causality analysis. The analysis attempts to extend existing research that indicates a significant causal relationship between transfer spending and performance. I then speak to the sustainability of transfer spending necessary to improve performance over a specified length of time. Further discussion considers implications of Financial Fair Play regulations and explores relevant case studies of Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Chelsea, Leicester City, and Newcastle United.

Green Growth Or Degrowth? The Economics Of Climate Change, Cadence Tomlinson Apr 2022

Green Growth Or Degrowth? The Economics Of Climate Change, Cadence Tomlinson

Senior Theses

The paradigm dominating how American policymakers currently approach the climate crisis issue is green growth, positing that the global economy can maintain desirable levels of persistent economic growth while also effectively reducing carbon emissions and slowing the process of global warming, all by means of market-spurred technological innovation and green production processes. Some environmental thinkers dispute the sustainability potential of green growth, urging green growth economists and policymakers to think beyond the ostensibly “limiting” economic growth paradigm. Among this dissent, a new paradigm has emerged, one de-centering goals of economic growth and instead advocating for a reduction in economic throughput, …

Monopolies, Monopsonies, And Everything In-Between: The Gradual Unwinding Of Nearly A Century Of Antitrust Activity, Chase Faulkner Apr 2022

Monopolies, Monopsonies, And Everything In-Between: The Gradual Unwinding Of Nearly A Century Of Antitrust Activity, Chase Faulkner

Senior Theses

Changes in the interpretation of antitrust law since the Reagan administration have created a simultaneous increase in mergers/acquisitions and a decrease in antitrust action. This trend started with Ronald Reagan in an effort to bolster a stagnant United States economy, yet in spite of the revolution the global economy has undergone in the last few decades, this trend is still perpetuated today. While this has helped the United States economy abroad, it has come at a cost domestically. A number of industries have become dominated by a single firm (or a group) through a variety of anticompetitive practices, and their …

The Aftereffects Of Corporal Punishment On Adults: Association Of Childhood Spanking With Adult Stress Levels, Marie Sanyang Apr 2022

The Aftereffects Of Corporal Punishment On Adults: Association Of Childhood Spanking With Adult Stress Levels, Marie Sanyang

Senior Theses

Spanking has been an acceptable form of punishment for centuries. Previously thought as effective, studies have now shown the detriments of spanking, including increased aggression, drug abuse, and stress levels. This exploratory study sought to observe the stress levels of adults who experienced childhood spankings. It was hypothesized that those who experienced frequent spankings would report increased anxiety, reduced socialization, and decreased emotional regulation in times of stress. It was also hypothesized that those who reported being spanked would report lower emotional and physical health regulation and higher mental health diagnosis. Fifty-four participants were composed of undergraduate and graduate students …

The Impact Of Cultural Perceptions Of Well-Being And Resulting Sustainable Local Development Initiatives, Atifah Jatoi

Senior Theses

Views on and approaches to sustainable economic development can differ vastly depending on country and location. Historically, in the United States, sustainable development is primarily based on the four pillars of sustainability: social, human, environmental, and economic. On the other hand, in communities in relatively collectivist societies, sustainable development policies and organizations are influenced by collective interest, cooperation, and the well-being of the community. Local development initiatives centered around promoting the well-being of the community are a way to have a more equitable approach to sustainable development and are necessary to address ecological, economic, and social challenges. I will discuss …

The Collegiate Dancer As An Athlete: An Argument For Athletic Strength & Conditioning In Collegiate Dance Programs, Samantha Phillips Apr 2022

The Collegiate Dancer As An Athlete: An Argument For Athletic Strength & Conditioning In Collegiate Dance Programs, Samantha Phillips

Senior Theses

Most collegiate sports athletes participate in compulsory athletic strength and conditioning; however, such requirements are not prevalent in university dance programs. Designed as arts degree programs, most requirements revolve around technique, history, pedagogy, theoretical understandings of composition, rehearsals, dance anatomy, and in certain cognates, education. The growing incorporation and paradigm shift of dance as a sport, as well as an art, supports the inclusion of collegiate dance programs into similar considerations, regulations, and requirements as competitive collegiate sports teams. As such, this is an argument and recommendation for the inclusion of athletic strength and conditioning in collegiate dance programs.

Acute Kynurenine Challenge Upregulates Activation Of Orexinergic Neurons In The Lateral Hypothalamus, Hayley Nicholson Apr 2022

Acute Kynurenine Challenge Upregulates Activation Of Orexinergic Neurons In The Lateral Hypothalamus, Hayley Nicholson

Senior Theses

Abnormalities in the kynurenic pathway (KP) of tryptophan catabolism are implicated in various neurocognitive disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Alzheimer’s disease. Elevated levels of the astrocyte-derived metabolite kynurenic acid (KYNA) are found in the postmortem brain of individuals with these illnesses. KYNA is a neuroactive metabolite and acts as an antagonist at glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and cholinergic α7 nicotinic acetylcholine (α7nACh) receptors. As glutamatergic and cholinergic transmission are critically involved in sleep-dependent plasticity and cognition, KYNA is hypothesized to play a key role in cognitive and sleep disruptions present in these brain disorders. Sleep and cognitive disturbances are pathophysiologically …

German And Mexican Music In Central Texas: Historical Connections And Present Possibilities, Amy Aline Beckman Apr 2022

German And Mexican Music In Central Texas: Historical Connections And Present Possibilities, Amy Aline Beckman

Masters Theses

German and Mexican music have a shared musical ancestry due to immigrants interacting since the late 1800s in central Texas. Comparing these genres reveals both commonalities and distinctions regarding style, orchestration, and thematic material. The differences between the genres create cultural boundaries reflecting nationalism that sometimes reinforces racial tension, while the commonalities are opportunities for empathy and open-mindedness through the globalization that occurs from shared musical experiences. While the historical connections between Germans and Mexicans in Central Texas are well-documented, the present-day status and effects of these connections have not been researched thoroughly. This project builds cultural profiles of both …

Mislabeled: A Study Of Generational Labels And Gen Z Stereotypes, Levi Victor Smith Apr 2022

Mislabeled: A Study Of Generational Labels And Gen Z Stereotypes, Levi Victor Smith

Masters Theses

Generation Z is the newest cohort to be introduced in the generational cycle and has earned the attention of marketers, researchers, and the general public alike. While individuals and members of other generations have been quick to stereotype and assign labels to members of Generation Z, little research has been done to see if such labels are accurate. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to discover whether generational labels can accurately communicate the characteristics of individuals within Generation Z. This study used Henri Tajfel's and John Turner’s Social Identity Theory to examine how group membership defines self-identity in terms …

A Course To Prepare Undergraduate Music Education Students For Teaching Autism Spectrum Disorder, Amanda Lynn Whitmer

Masters Theses

In the field of music education, Autism Spectrum Disorder has become an area of importance requiring more thought and intentionality from teachers than normal lesson planning expectations. Because music educator programs only offer courses that cover the whole spectrum of special needs and do not focus on autism specifically, music educators are finding themselves unprepared to create music lessons that can accommodate learners with such a unique spectrum of learning abilities. Many college curriculums offer special needs courses that focus on all aspects of special education that can be found in music education but very rarely for autism as a …

Racial Allies, Atinuke O. Adediran Apr 2022

Racial Allies, Atinuke O. Adediran

Fordham Law Review

Racial allies are white individuals and institutions that actively work to dismantle systems of racial inequality and the consequences of poverty that disproportionately impact communities of color and that are willing to both confer and share power with members of subjugated groups. There is no other sector of the legal profession that professes to be racial allies more than individuals and institutions within the public interest law sector. Yet, these institutions that address structural racism and disproportionately serve communities of color appear not to share power with racial and ethnic minorities. The public interest law sector has been at the …

The Political And Social Change Driven By Protest: The Need To Reform The Anti-Riot Act And Examine Anti-Riot Provisions, Ronald E. Britt Ii Apr 2022

The Political And Social Change Driven By Protest: The Need To Reform The Anti-Riot Act And Examine Anti-Riot Provisions, Ronald E. Britt Ii

Fordham Law Review

The right to join in peaceful assembly and petition is critical to an effective democracy and is at the core of the First Amendment. The assault of peaceful protestors in the pursuit of racial justice is not a new phenomenon, and legislators at the federal and state levels have drafted anti-riot provisions as a measure to target protestors they deem an existential threat to American society. As these provisions have become increasingly prevalent in light of the protests following the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, they have the likelihood of severely chilling the effect on protestors’ right to …

Serine-Threonine Kinase Inhibition As Antifibrotic Therapy: Transforming Growth Factor-Β And Rho Kinase Inhibitors, Fabian A. Mendoza, Sergio A. Jimenez

Scleroderma Center Faculty Papers

Serine/threonine kinases mediate the phosphorylation of intracellular protein targets, transferring a phosphorus group from an adenosine triphosphate molecule to the specific amino acid residues within the target proteins. Serine/threonine kinases regulate multiple key cellular functions. From this large group of kinases, TGF-β through serine/threonine activity of its receptors and Rho kinase (ROCK) play an important role in the development and maintenance of fibrosis in various human diseases, including SSc. In recent years, multiple drugs targeting and inhibiting these kinases have been developed, opening the possibility of becoming potential antifibrotic agents of clinical value for treating fibrotic diseases. This review analyses …

Rights To Nowhere: The Idea's Inadequacy In High-Poverty Schools, Claire Raj Apr 2022

Rights To Nowhere: The Idea's Inadequacy In High-Poverty Schools, Claire Raj

Faculty Publications

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”) successfully opened the schoolhouse doors to millions of students with disabilities. But more than forty years after its enactment, the law has proven largely inept at confronting the educational inequities faced by the many students with disabilities attending underfunded, high-poverty public schools. This shortcoming is inconsistent with common conceptions of the IDEA: Advocates and policymakers alike treat the IDEA’s rights and privately enforceable remedies as strong, meaningful tools. This Article theorizes that the IDEA’s under-appreciated failures are overlooked because they are the products of the law’s internal structure, undue judicial deference to schools, …

A Geospatial And Binomial Logistic Regression Model To Prioritize Sampling For Per- And Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances In Public Water Systems, Sweta Ojha, Ying Li, Nader Rezaei, Ariel Robinson, Anna G. Hoover, Kelly G. Pennell

UK CARES Faculty Publications

As health‐based drinking water standards for per‐ and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) continue to evolve, public health and environmental protection decision‐makers must assess exposure risks associated with all public drinking water systems in the United States (US). Unfortunately, current knowledge regarding the presence of PFAS in environmental systems is limited. In this study, a screening approach was established to: (1) identify and direct attention toward potential PFAS hot spots in drinking water sources, (2) prioritize sampling locations, and (3) provide insights regarding the potential PFAS sources that contaminate groundwater and surface water. Our approach incorporates geospatial data from public sources, …
