Xunzi's Humanistic Naturalism: Utilizing Rituals To Address Our Psychological Challenges, Kaleb Mccalden
Xunzi's Humanistic Naturalism: Utilizing Rituals To Address Our Psychological Challenges, Kaleb Mccalden
2022 Symposium
Xunzi [298-238 BCE] is one of the major Confucian philosophers from the Warring States period of ancient Chinese history and is widely recognized as the poster child for the “naturalistic” branch of Confucian philosophy. Xunzi is often contrasted with another Confucian thinker, Mencius. Whereas Mencius is characterized by his belief that human nature is inherently good, Xunzi is primarily identified with his belief that human nature is bad. Xunzi is also known for his theory of ritual, one of his greatest contributions to Chinese thought. In his discussion of ritual, Xunzi adopts the lens of an intriguingly psychological perspective to …

Striving Towards Efficient Curriculum Implementation, Melissa J. Hernandez
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
As an Early Learning Mentor Coach for a non-profit organization, my job is to ensure proper implementation of our curriculum within the classroom in order to be in compliance with our grant agreements. Through this process, I had to think of a way to support teaching staff and help them be successful without adding extra stress or hours to their workdays. Whether this was to be done through a binder, a reflection checklist, or a website, I needed to come up with something that was efficient, effective, and convenient for the teachers.
The "Essential" Witness Of The Church In Times Of Crisis, John Mclarty
The "Essential" Witness Of The Church In Times Of Crisis, John Mclarty
Doctor of Leadership
Faith leaders in Wichita Falls can help their congregations better serve the community when they are connected to each other and aware of needs and resources available to them. That is the Need, Problem, Opportunity (NPO) at the center of this research.
The Project began with a desire to help the church be a better community partner, especially in the way it served families on the financial margins. Some initial learnings were that many families did not know how to access services provided in the community and many resource providers were reluctant to collaborate with other organizations. As the focus …

An Approach To Pilgrimage As Crucible For Leadership Formation, Jer Swigart
Doctor of Leadership
The Global Immersion Project targets faith leaders who are disoriented by a Christianity that justifies actions, nonactions, and political positions informed by greed, racism, and violence. Endorsements of injustice and demands for partisan allegiance by prominent Christian leaders cause many to become suspicious of their inherited religion. This often ignites a search for a faith that generates a restorative ethic. Within our immersive trainings, they encounter the values that have shaped their inherited religion and are awakened to their contrast to the values of Jesus. By training’s conclusion, many stand, on the precipice of a perilous pilgrimage, asking, “Where do …

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), also known as endotoxin, can trigger septic shock, a severe form of inflammation-mediated sepsis with a very high mortality rate. However, the precise mechanisms underlying this endotoxin remain to be defined and detoxification of LPS is yet to be established. Macrophages, a type of immune cells, initiate a key response responsible for the cascade of events leading to the surge in inflammatory cytokines and immunopathology of septic shock. This study was undertaken to determine whether the LPS-induced inflammation in macrophage cells could be ameliorated via CDDO-IM (2-cyano-3,12 dioxooleana-1,9 dien-28-oyl imidazoline), a novel triterpenoid compound. Data from this study …

Previvors, Valerie Gutmann Koch
Previvors, Valerie Gutmann Koch
Florida State University Law Review
Individuals who are not yet sick, but who have a genetic predisposition to disease, often identify as "previvors'" a combination of the terms "predisposition" and "survivor." The previvor experience challenges many of the traditional expectations related to the provision of medical care and individual decision making. This article is the first to define the term '`previvor" for the legal literature and the first to examine the role of law in previvor decision making. In essence, this project uses previvorship as a case study to demonstrate how the practice of medicine and medical decision making is evolving to render current law …

Reexamining The Application Of Duress And Necessity Defenses To Prison Escape In The Context Of Covid19, Bill Clawges
Reexamining The Application Of Duress And Necessity Defenses To Prison Escape In The Context Of Covid19, Bill Clawges
JCLC Online
The classic example of the necessity defense involves a prisoner escaping from a burning prison. Surely, the law would not require them to stay in the prison when doing so would put their life at an immediate and grave risk. This example epitomizes the purpose of the necessity defense; society would rather the prisoner survive and leave prison than die ablaze while obeying the letter of the law. In recent years, the difference between the two justification defenses of necessity and duress has become blurred, especially in cases involving prison escape. Both are equally applicable, and both are relevant in …

What are human rights? What do they promise and how often is that promise achieved? This class will examine the law, politics, policy, and advocacy practices of human rights, focusing on the dilemmas that ensue. In addition to examining human rights as law, we will also analyze the political, policy, and philosophical implications of human rights. We will explore the role of international and domestic law in enacting and enforcing human rights claims, the institutions of international human rights law, and the relationships between different types of rights. Throughout the course, we will pay special attention to three sets of …
The Power Of A Good Story: How Narrative Techniques Can Make Transactional Documents More Persuasive, Karen J. Sneddon
The Power Of A Good Story: How Narrative Techniques Can Make Transactional Documents More Persuasive, Karen J. Sneddon
Articles
Transactional documents are complex, multi-faceted documents reviewed by various audiences at multiple points in time. They are more than descriptive legal devices that dictate the exchange of widgets for cash. While the core of many transactional documents will be the acquisition, creation, or exchange of property or services, transactional documents do more than memorialize that understanding. At first glance, transactional documents may seem simply like expository texts that aim to create the private law between the transacting parties and educate the audience by delivering a sequence of instructions, but transactional documents do much more. They tell the stories of the …

Mindfulness As An Effective Conceptual Tool For The Pastoral Care Of Western Christians, Beth Virostek
Mindfulness As An Effective Conceptual Tool For The Pastoral Care Of Western Christians, Beth Virostek
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
The rapprochement of mindfulness within Christian ministries of the West is integrally important as mindfulness continues to grow as a field and be utilized in the secular world as a tool for growth and the promotion of subjective well-being. If this rapprochement is not attempted, the conflicts surrounding Christians approaching and utilizing mindfulness will continue. In recent decades, the application of mindfulness in a variety of areas has exploded. The neuroscience research has followed, citing great benefits to the practice of and the trait of mindfulness. However, Christians remain hesitant in approaching mindfulness for fear of it being heretical in …

The present research project centers on the issue of concussions. Concussions largely go unreported in football, across all levels of play. Concussions can vary in their impact, but generally they can cause a myriad of cognitive, physical and emotional problems. The risk of concussions and the impacts on the health of the individual, is largely affected by self reporting of concussions, which is extremely low. The culture of sports is a large part of this issue, a culture of hypermasculinity which supports self sacrifice is dominant in sports. Addressing this problem, the present project surveys individuals on their knowledge of …

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
According to McArdle et al. (2015), Excessive Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) computes the total oxygen consumed in recovery minus the total oxygen consumed at rest during the recovery period. According to McArdle et al. (2015), VO2 mL/kg/min is defined as maximal oxygen consumption. According to McArdle et al. (2015), respiratory exchange ratio (RER) is the ratio of carbon dioxide produced to oxygen consumed under rest and steady-state conditions with little reliance on anaerobic metabolism. According to Dr. et al. (2004), EPOC is also known as O2 deficit and was used as a measure of anaerobic metabolism during exercise. According to …

Acute Impact Of Barefoot Running On Running Economy In Recreational Runners: A Conceptual Framework., Allyson Butts
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
Barefoot (BF) running is associated with biomechanical alterations that improve performance by increasing running economy (RE). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of acute BF running on RE in recreational runners. Participants (n = 20) completed treadmill trials in conventional running shoes (CRS) and BF at 60% and 80% of VO2max. A two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (p < 0.05) measured the effects of shoe condition on RE. Results were expected to reflect the speeddependent nature of RE, reduced shoe weight in the BF condition, individualized biomechanical and stride adjustments, and the physiological cost of task novelty. Future directions include expanding population, duration, and variable analysis.

Exercise Prescription For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Audrey Gun, Haley Church
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is characterized as a chronic metabolic disorder resulting in hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and relative insulin deficiency (Olokoba, et al. 2012). The process of developing Type 2 diabetes mellitus is caused by a series of complications known as defective insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity (Galicia-Garcia, et al. 2020). Defective insulin secretion is the process in which adequate insulin secretion is not met after food consumption. This alone can lead to other issues such as increases levels of glucose. As insulin resistance progresses, pancreatic insulin-producing cells produce less insulin and eventually resulting in Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The …
