Oxygen levels in vivo are autonomously regulated by a supply–demand balance, which can be altered in disease states. However, the oxygen levels of in vitro cell culture systems, particularly microscale cell culture, are typically dominated by either supply or demand. Further, the oxygen microenvironment in these systems is rarely monitored or reported. Here, a method to establish and dynamically monitor autonomously regulated oxygen microenvironments (AROM) using an oil overlay in an open microscale cell culture system is presented. Using this method, the oxygen microenvironment is dynamically regulated via the supply–demand balance of the system. Numerical simulation and experimental validation of …

The use of pulse wave analysis may assist cardiologists in diagnosing patients with vascular diseases. However, it is not common in clinical practice to interpret and analyze pulse wave data and utilize them to detect the abnormalities of the signal. This paper presents a novel approach to the clinical application of pulse waveform analysis using the wavelet technique by decomposing the normal and pathology signal into many levels. The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) decomposes the carotid arterial pulse wave (CAPW) signal, and the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) creates images of the decomposed signal. The wavelet analysis technique in this work …

Setting The Oppressed Free: Ministry Among The Chin In Myanmar, Abby Wilson
People Group & Region Research (Capstone Papers)
Significant challenges for the Chin of Myanmar in a ministry context include the continued hostility of the Burmese government and military towards ethnic and religious minorities. They have many ministry needs that are currently being met by several nonprofit organizations. This includes both organizations that have sent workers from abroad and indigenous organizations comprised of Chin people themselves. By reviewing the strategies of these organizations as well as the religious history of the Chin, appropriate strategies for holistic outreach can be determined.

Comparing And Contrasting Therapeutic Drugs Vs. Lifestyle Changes That Combattype-Ii Diabetes, Alexander Cline Helmuth
Chemistry & Biochemistry Student Projects
In this thesis, I will be presenting various preventive approaches to combat type-II diabetes. The focus of this paper will be comparing and contrasting therapeutic drug targets such as Metformin and Sulfonylureas that are prescribed for type-II diabetic patients versus taking preventative steps such as making lifestyle changes including weight management, physical activity, and having a balanced diet that prevents onset of type-II diabetes or helps patients manage type-II diabetes. From this paper, one will gain insight on how there are multiple approaches to combat type-II diabetes that are not in the form of the pill.

The Application Of Biological Processes To Increase Energy Potential In Landfills, Ashlyn Eisenhart
Chemistry & Biochemistry Student Projects
There has been a dramatic increase in the amount of waste that we humans have created. This has been due to population growth, an increase in industrial manufacturing, along with urbanization and modernization.8 The number of tons of municipal solid waste entering landfills has increased from 82.5 million tons in 1960 to 146.1 million tons in 2018.17 However, thanks to recycling, composting, and energy recovery from combustion, the percentage of solid waste going to landfills has dramatically decreased, from around 93.6 to about 65.4 percent.17

The Increase Of Fentanyl Use In Young Adults And Its Relationship To Mental Illness, Madison Lilleberg, Madison Regel, Bashaer Abdushakour, Rosalee Allan
2022 Symposium
The abuse of prescription pain medication has risen to exponential levels in the United States within the past few years, leading to overdose deaths. The opioid epidemic sparked the popularity of the use of Fentanyl due to its highly potent pain-fighting properties. What was once approved to manage pain symptoms for cancer patients is now being used by thousands of young individuals irresponsibly and poses a threat to the health of our population. It is also becoming increasingly common worldwide to find this synthetic opioid mixed with other illicit drugs.
The scope of the research focuses on studies on self-medication …

Purpose: Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) allows re-evaluation of extended criteria/marginal donor lungs. This can increase the number of lung transplants. However, the long-term outcomes of transplanting EVLP-screened lungs in a multicenter setting are unknown. We proposed to evaluate the short- and long-term outcomes of EVLP performed at multiple centers.
Methods: This is a prospective, nonrandomized clinical trial. Seventeen lung transplant centers in the United States. Adult patients with end-stage pulmonary disease requiring lung transplant from May 2011 to December 2017 were eligible. Lung allografts initially deemed extended criteria/marginal (n=216) were placed on EVLP and re-evaluated prior to transplant. Patients …

A Literature Review On Red Meat Consumption Contribution As A Risk Factor For Type 2 Diabetes, Wendy Ireland, Rebekah Davis
The Graduate School Posters
Diabetes continues to be a major health concern for public health officials. The incidence of diabetes has grown in the past two decades producing more than 37 million Americans who live with diabetes (about 1 in 10), and approximately 90-95% of Americans have type 2 diabetes 1. It is estimated that in 2030 cases of diabetes will rise to 439 million 2. Risk factors contribute to the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes and other health concerns 3. Reducing risk factors like a sedentary lifestyle and a high red meat consumption diet has shown to improve the …

Using A Data-Driven Approach To Examine Facility Use Definitions In Campus Recreation, Sera Janson Zegre, Rodney P. Hughes, Andrew M. Darling, Craig R. Decker
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Existing research in campus recreation establishes a relationship between facility use and academic outcomes, but published studies define users differently. In response to inconsistent definitions of participants in campus recreation, this study uses a data-driven approach to compare facility use definitions. Authors illustrate the implications of choosing different participant definitions for relationships between campus recreation and two undergraduate academic outcomes, first-year retention and first-year cumulative grade point average (GPA). This study uses data from a three-year timeframe, linking sources of data on students’ recreation facility use, academic outcomes, and student records. Authors provide a summary of previous definitions, results from …

How might I integrate mindful awareness, benevolent social action, and environmental stewardship into the routine of an outdoor education program? The Flourish Foundation, a social-profit organization, based in Hailey, Idaho, helps facilitate a youth service-learning program maintaining wilderness trails for the Sawtooth National Recreation Area called the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP). This program aims to provide emerging adults with service-learning opportunities in wilderness conservation and outdoor living skills by spending several days living in the backcountry and maintaining wilderness trails. A growing body of evidence supports the age-old understanding that spending time in natural environments is beneficial to our cognitive …
A Descriptive Analysis Of The Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Intervention For Public Educators During Covid-19, Amy Joynt
Doctor of Education (EdD)
Educators face high levels of stress, occupational burnout, and anxiety (Kurtz, 2021). The COVID-19 pandemic further exasperated occupational stress to higher levels and the long-lasting impact of the pandemic are still unknown. The consequences of burnout are enormous and previous research suggests mindfulness is a promising intervention that has the potential to remediate this issue (Ott et al., 2020). This exploratory analysis examines the results of preexisting data gathered from over 400 Oregon educators who participated in a mindfulness-based intervention aimed to combat the exasperated stress experienced during the 2020-21 school year. Little research has analyzed the effects of an …

Dark Faces In White Spaces: The Effects Of Skin Tone, Race, Ethnicity, And Intergroup Preferences On Interpersonal Judgments And Voting Behavior, Patrizia Chirco, Tonya M. Buchanan
Student Published Works
Across three experimental studies, we explored how a political candidate's intersections of skin tone, race, and ethnicity affect voting preferences and interpersonal judgments (e.g., warmth, trustworthiness, expertise). Study 1 assessed whether White participants would favor a light-skinned (vs. dark-skinned) African American candidate. Study 2 investigated participant (White vs. non-White) voting preferences based on the interaction between candidate race/ethnicity and relative skin tone (lighter vs. darker). In Study 3, we examined the influence of candidate race/ethnicity on voters’ preferences as well as the accuracy and impact of memory for candidate skin tone. Supporting our hypotheses, White participants generally held more negative …

QIC-Takes
When it comes to efforts to improve workforce outcomes, how would you describe the relationship between human resources (HR) and child welfare leadership in your agency? Is the working relationship collaborative or are the divisions siloed? Do child welfare and HR departments routinely share information, needs, data, and expertise? Is HR involved in child welfare workforce planning and decision making? These are just a few of the questions we have explored with child welfare agencies as part of our work at the QIC-WD. Overall, agency representatives have indicated that opportunities for increased collaboration exist between these departments and that closer …

Mental Health Stigma, Myna H. Krueck
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Mental health stigma refers to societal disapproval, or when society places shame on people who live with a mental illness or seek help for emotional distress, such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or PTSD. I made a poll with students attending Boise State about stigma and mental illness and posted it on Instagram for those people to take it. I took the results that were found from that poll and created an awareness newsletter. I posted this newsletter to the same Instagram account where I made the poll for. The newsletter was able to spread awareness through social media, and …

A Solution For The Third-Party Doctrine In A Time Of Data Sharing, Contact Tracing, And Mass Surveillance, Tonja Jacobi, Dustin Stonecipher
Notre Dame Law Review
Today, information is shared almost constantly. People share their DNA to track their ancestry or for individualized health information; they instruct Alexa to purchase products or provide directions; and, now more than ever, they use videoconferencing technology in their homes. According to the third-party doctrine, the government can access all such information without a warrant or without infringing on Fourth Amendment privacy protections. This exposure of vast amounts of highly personal data to government intrusion is permissible because the Supreme Court has interpreted the third-party doctrine as a per se rule. However, that interpretation rests on an improper understanding of …

Old Faith New: Risking It All For The Kingdom Of God, Bridget Thornton
Doctor of Ministry
The opportunity existed to develop a curriculum on a theology of risk for Key West United Methodist Church. This will enable us to begin to risk substantially for the Kingdom of God. This NPO was developed over the three years of the DMIN program; each milestone provided clarity to get to this final NPO. I began searching for tools used by United Methodists in previous times of liminality and discovered the need for a theology of risk. A hero who risked for God’s kingdom emerged in this search, Robert Strawbridge. Strawbridge was a layperson who exceeded his authority to reach …

Wanderer Above The Sea Of Desolation: The Romantic Ruin In Contemporary Dark Fantasy, Steffi Santos
Library Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research
Any work involving a made-up universe is reliant on the mastery of its author in the conventions of its universe. In most works of high fantasy, authors proudly (often superfluously) showcase their worldbuilding: Languid, heavy-handed exposition and colorful, winding descriptions are the norm. However, the fictional worlds of the dark fantasy subgenre strive for the opposite, utilizing understatement as a mode of storytelling. Exposition through imagery, ambiance, and little pieces of lore picked up organically throughout a story is how the worldbuilding of dark fantasy settings is expressed. Such is the case for the fictional universe of the 2016 video …
